Screen darkness DIRECTLY above DVD drive

Hello- I was wondering what I should do about some screen darkness I've noticed DIRECTLY above where the DVD/CD Drive is located. Its there all the time, but I work a lot in graphics and is incredibly noticeable when a solid color falls in the area where the drive is. It looks almost like an outline of the drive. The iMac is 2 years old - but this problem has really got me upset. I DO have Apple Care, and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if anyone has tried to have this problem taken care of. Im not sure if Apple would replace the drive, the display, both, or replace my iMac, but this problem is unacceptable.
Thanks for your help.

That's a shame.

  • Screen Recordings from the DVD Drive No Longer Permitted

I am a literature professor who teaches books that are often adapted into film. When I give lectures on those books, I like to include short snippets of clips of those films from DVDs to help my students visualize the material, and I do that by doing a screen recording (via screenflow) of the DVD clip I want to teach, so I can drop the film clip into the keynote without breaking stride. Also, I teach from a room without a DVD player and via a macbook air (no dvd player), so carrying around the DVD, stopping the lecture, switching the A/V, priming the DVD, hunting for the 30 second clip, and returning to the Keynote lecture is just not something I want -- or am able -- to do.  But the new update of the mac software -- I have OSX 10.9 -- greys out the media box when I hit "play" on the DVD player and "record" on screenflow, making it impossible to make a screen recording of the film.  I researched screenflow and it said the problem is not with their program but with the newest Apple Update. They have no control over the greyed out box.  The only problem is that I own the screen recording software (which I paid for just for this purpose), the DVD I'm recording, AND I'm only using it in an educational setting AND I'm only using clips no longer than a couple of minutes, which I also cite from the original source so students can find the whole thing if they want. Apple should not be greying out this option for me. I'm completely in my rights. Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know a way around it?

    I'm completely in my rights
    Not exactly.

  • Disable dvd-drive

My dvd drive has been making noises whenever I tap the laptop directly above the drive. It has been doing this for a long time now, but lately it has gotten HIGHLY sensitive and buzzes about once a minute if im at the keyboard. It sounds like maybe its trying to recalibrate something, but I never use it anyways so i'd just like to turn it off. Is there a way to do this?

vendt: It would be possible to disconnect the optical drive's flex cable from the logic board, thus rendering the drive completely inert. But I'm not sure whether, with the connector loosed from the LB, it would stick up too high for the keyboard to fit properly back into place. In that case you would have to remove the drive altogether, or remove it temporarily in order to disconnect and remove the flex cable altogether, then put the disconnected drive back in place. Operating the machine with the drive removed might change the feel of it unpleasantly, but if it doesn't, that may be the thing to do.

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

    OK. If you believe that.
When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Satellite L300D-11A - DVD-drive issue and Blue Screen

    Hi
I'm going out of my mind :o//
My Satellite L300D-11A was delivered with a Windows Vista Home Premium, but I recently made a clean installation of the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits.
Since then I have had problems with "Blue screen error's" comming randomly. Have purchased and installed a Registry clean up program, but that did not fix the problem. Any one else with that problem - and a possible solution.
And now for my big problem. My CD and DVD drive is driving me crazy ;o) It's a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA and from my search on the internet I have found that a lot of other Mat****a owners have had the same or similar problem(s). My drive will not regonize or play/read from CD's. DVD with movies or programs I can play. Burning CD's is not possible and burning DVD's is sometimes working, and other times not.
I have read about the different fixes that is posted - also here on the Toshiba forum - Non of the suggested solutions is working for me - any new solutions that I could try.
Seriously thinking about buying a external USB DVD drive/burner - but can someone please tell me why Toshiba does not get the fingers out off their B** and find a solution like it seams Sony has done.
Look forward to any reply ;o))
Someone once told me about this quote - "Don't wish it was easier - work on getting clever !" I need your help to get clever ;o))

    > But I do not now how/where to get the registration keys! I have tried looking for them.
Are you talking about *Upper/Lower Filters* ?
Follow these instructions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters:
Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
    Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
    Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
    Expand the "Control" Key
    Expand the "Class" Key
    Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
High light this key by left clicking once on it
On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen
    Reboot your computer

  • Boot Camp 2 issues: repartioning; DVD-drive; screen; sound; usb-power

I found various problems in version 2 of Boot Camp (included in Leopard).
    1.
After removing the Boot Camp 2 Windows partition, it is impossible to recreate a new Windows partition. Somehow the windows partition is not completely removed (?) and the Boot Camp Assistent goes on forever restoring the Macintosh HD to its original (one partition) state. Strangely, you can just quit the assistant during this process without consequences. Only repartitioning the complete HD using Disk Utility resolves this (this of course requires a complete reinstallation of OS X).
    2.
After installation of Windows XP Pro, Windows treats the DVD-drive (OPTIARC DVD RW AD5630-A) as a removable media, just like a USB-memory. This means that you can remove the DVD hardware from the system(using the tray icon "Safe Removal hardware") by just one click. The DVD drive then completely disappears from 'My Computer' even with a CD in! The only way to get the DVD-drive back is by restarting Windows (inserting a disk can be done but it is impossible to access the disk; ejecting the disc is also impossible (the eject key on the mac keyboard doesn't work).
    3.
I suspect that there is something wrong with the video driver in windows. This can be noted for instance with the black "moon crater" as the desktop image (lower left corner) or in the windows login-screen (lower blue part of the screen). The issue may be described as pixels varying in brightness and colour in a fast way. Pixels are not "constant" and it seems like a wave is moving over these parts of the screen. It seems more or less comparable to the problems reported with Boot Camp beta 1.4 on MPB's.
    4.
I also suspect the windows sound driver (RealTek) not to be ok. Every Windows sound (startup Chime, warning, etc.) is followed by a strange electronic sound, as if the sound is echoing while fading away. I did not try to play an audio CD, but I think this may result in a not so pleasant experience.
    5.
When I connect my 2 GB Kingston USB-memory to the internal hub of the new apple keyboard, Windows starts complaining that there is not sufficient power. The same configuration works without problems under Mac OS X.
Has anyone similar experiences? To me it seems like Boot Camp is still in beta stage....

    I also encountered problems 4 and 5:
*To no. 4: Distorted sound and background noise:*
It's exactly the same as described by HLO-HL. As soon as the soundcard gets turned on in Vista (by any program i.e. iTunes, Mediaplayer) there is this background noise. Watching a DVD is almost impossible. Listening to music in iTunes is somewhat ok, but only at high volume (so the background noise cannot be heard) and it is still distorted sometimes.
I tried about everything from installing the latetest Realtek driver, updating the Intel chipset drivers, to changing the bitrates and so on. Still no resolution found. It seems the many others experience the same problem (search for 'distorted sound Vista').
*To no. 5: Low USB power reported*
I got this message with every device I connected (no matter if it was a 2.5''-harddrive, a cardreader, a camera or just a simple memory stick ...

  • How do I record a quicktime screen recording directly to an external hard drive?

I want to record a screen recording directly to an external hard drive (or flash drive/SD card) and I've heard that doing so will improve system performance by reducing the workload somehow. I'm not entirely sure.
Is that true, will it work, and how do I do it?
    Help would be much appreciated!

I think USB is much slower than your internal HDD connection and you might start losing frames. The system itself will do the same job... the only where performance may increase are the actions where you need to read/write from/to the disk i.e. open an app or save file.

  • DVD drive does not appear on the "Computer" drive screen

I have lost access to the DVD drive. It does not appear on the "Computer" drive screen.
It will start up with a disk inserted but shuts down after a approx 20 seconds without having opened any files.
The DVD light comes on when it first starts up and then goes off within a few seconds.
I have re-installed the Toshiba driver and still no access.
I believe it started when I installed a new WD 1Tb external drive which setup its virtual CD drive on the E: drive which was used by the DVD drive. I have moved the external drive to G: and left the E: drive letter vacant but still not working.
Any ideas how I can solve this? It would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will help you but check it anyway

I have a PowerMac G5 running headless and I control it from a Mac Pro via Screen Sharing. How do I open the DVD drive? In Screen Sharing, pressing the media eject key opens the tray on the Mac Pro, not on the PowerMac.

  • Install new hard drive Macbook 2.1, No DVD Drive, Grey screen of death!

I have never backed up my Macbook 2.1 duo before yesterday. While in the process of backing up I was using photoshop, and my computer froze. I waited 30 min and then decided to shut it down. When I tried to turn it on it will not boot-up, I only get the grey screen of death. I had just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard this week. I used an external DVD drive which seemed to cause issues. So I thought I might be able to use that to install a clean version on this busted drive, well nothing worked, tried holding option key, holding down the C key. So this is my new idea I ordered another drive that says its compatible with my drive. Since the my mac doesnt seem to acknowledge my drive, I bought an external housing for my new internal. Confused yet, I am... I want to format and load Snow leopard onto the new hard drive using my girl friends mac. then put in my macbook. I would like to know if this will work? how I need to format my drive in disk utility ( do I partition it out?). Is it possible that it is not my Hard Drive? Any type of advise would be great. If you have done this I would love to hear from you...
Another side note, I just upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB on my Macbook 2.1, I did try and putting my old ram back in just incase that was the issue, but that did not help

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

I have apple TV, and apple aux dvd drive, 2 new flat screens, $5,000 worth of hardware and facy technology that apparently will not play a freaking movie... please tell me this isnt true..

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iDVD are you using?
what system version are you running?
how did you create the DVD disk you're trying to play?
    what fixes have you tried?
how much free space on your boot drive?
Did you follow this recommended workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
