Screen dim while watching movie

I haven't found a definitive reason for this really irritating behaviour.
When watching a movie on my G4 Powerbook the Apple keeps dimming the screen. Incredibly annoying to have to tap the trackpad every couple of minutes.
From what I have read - and it's not much - I finally figured out that to stop this I need to go to the Energy Saver settings and uncheck "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep."
Wow. That was obvious....
My question though is much simpler.
Who on earth would design a system that dims the screen while a movie is playing? I can't conceive of any situation during which I would launch a movie and prefer to have it dim.
Shouldn't the screen default to not dimming when a movie is being played?

Of course, and this is a case of sending Feedback...
My workaround: Active Screen Corners (in System Preferences > Exposé). I have one assigned to Disable Screen Saver, and I leave the mouse pointer on it when watching a movie.

I've just purchased a new macbook air 11.6 in and when watching movies (not in ful screen) the screen dims, Im assuming because of inactivity with keyboard, etc. I dont like to watch all movies in full screen, so how do I change the settings to allow for longer 'inactive' times? Actually, Plex does the best job by placing a black background to the internal iMac screen it's called Blanking.
However that does not turn off the backlit which is very bright on the iMac 24" also the internal screen will draw more power that way. As you probably know running bootcamp you can turn off the internal screen while watching a movie on the external. This isn't a hardware limitation, I hope Lion has this feature.

You can set a passcode to be requied to unlock the iPad via Settings > General > Passcode Lock. In terms of locking the actual screen whilst using an app, then that isn't currently possible, but with iOS 6 in the Autumn there will be a new 'accessibility' feature (from here) which will allow you :

How to make the screen dim while music is playing

I can't get the screen to dim while playing music on my iPod Nano. It used to be that the screen dimmed while music was playing until it lit up when I hit a button to change volume, track, etc. This preserved the battery life. It seems that I inadvertantly changed some setting just a few days ago because I saw the apple logo appear on the screen and since then have not been able to figure out how to make the screen dim while playing music. I think the fact that the screen is staying on while I'm listening now is making the battery out very quickly. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Thank you!

You need to reset the backlight timer.
Go to settings, general, and backlight. You should be able to set if from there. I am assuming you have a 6th gen nano. If you have a different model the user manuals have the steps. Found here:

Anybody know how to fix the audio while watching movies on first generation apple tv? On my apple tv, I can hear audio for music, music videos, youtube, internet radio and even movie previews! But..... when I pay for the rental download of a movie there is no audio - just visuals. I am connecting with hdmi. When I connect an apple tv 2nd generation to the same amp and tv, using same hdmi and even same power lead and same settings then there is no problem! Anybody know how I can get audio to work for movies for this?

that makes sense and good point but no don't think so. Where would I check that setting? I had same problem on my next gerneration apple tv (black model) but when I switched off the dolby then I could hear movie. In this case that does not work for the first generation (white) apple TV I have whether dolby is on or off. I have never been able to watch a movie using it.

Screen dims when watching internet movies

My PBg4 screen becomes dim when watching internet videos or slide shows in iphoto or imovie.
I have to keep moving the mouse to keep the screen well lit.
Is there a way to fix this problem and still have the dim screen dim in all other situations where needed?

I did not want to set the CP to never sleep, because in normal circumstances I want the screen to dim.
This way I can activate the non-sleep feature only when I need to.

Dvd player screen dims while playing a DVD

It is happening on both my iMacs (a G4 and the new dual Intel. while watching a movie the screen dims a bit every so often and then brighten up again. Any suggestions?

thanks for checking in. I have had the other screen dim issue where the mouse needs to be moved to power the screen up full. It is not this issue. The screen dims for one second and then brightens up again on its own, too quick to know if moving the mouse would also restore the brightness. The issue happens on all movie dvds, home made or professional.
I have not tried another dvd player as this iMac is in the living room and it is front row, with it's sweet little remote, that makes the iMac our replacement for a TV. (It happens in both front row and dvd player.)
I am hoping to solve this problem rather than switch players, but fdor laughs, when I get home Monday I will download another player and see what happens, it will be an interesting experiment.

White screen appears while watching videos on full screen

I was wondering if you could help me. Last few days, while I'm watching videos on Safari (youtube for example) every couple of minutes a white screen pops up instead of the video.
This happens on full screen only. when I minimize the window, everything seems to be normal.
are you familiar with this phenomenon?

I usually watch movies/shows on full screen on my mac book pro 13" buuut in the past few days when I set it to full screen it'll get most of the screen but it won't cover the toolbar.. it really is bugging me and I dont know how I can fix it?

Screen dims while making adjustments

When using LR 2.3, I've recently started to notice a problem that starts to occur at some point after LR has been active for an extended period (few days?). All of a sudden --the monitor screen momentarily dims while I'm moving a slider or keying in a new setting (in the Develop module); and once this starts, it happens for any type of slider change and with any image. Then, as soon as the mouse button is released, the screen instantly returns to normal brightness. The degree of dimming is quite considerable and naturally makes it nearly impossible to assess the effect of a setting change in "real time".
The only way I've found to eliminate this problem is to quit and restart LR. The problem has never happened (to me) with previous LR versions, although I've been using LR steadily since the pre-1.0 beta days. I've been using version 2.3 ever since it became available, but I've only noticed this behavior during the past few weeks. Yes, I know it's best not to run LR (or any app) for very extensive intervals, but is there some other likely cause for this problem that I should try eliminate? Is this perhaps a known 2.3 issue?
I use a Mac Intel Mini (2.0 Ghz), 4 Gb RAM, OS X 10.5.6, NEC LCD 2690 UXi.

One reason to quit and restart LR at least daily is to back up the catalog.
I agree, however I just checked on the problem and find it has returned–but with far less than 24 hours of time elapsed since the last quit/restart of LR.
I then quit all the other programs that were running, but that didn't help. I have no special reason not to do the 2.4 update, but I, too, am skeptical that the update is likely to solve an issue that appears to be (more-or-less) limited to my own system.

I have a problem with my PowerBook. I hate the energy saver function. When I use normal programs everything is o.k. and when their is no input it sleeps after a couple of minuten.
The problem is that while I watching an DVD or an Interstream my energy Saving Options put my screen to black because their is no input or mouse moving.
Is their a way to prevent the screen to go to black without switching off the engergy saving options while watching a DVD or Stream??

Disable all sleep functions. IMHO, they're overrated.

ATV2 resets while watching movies streaming from itunes

I have movies that are located on my Mac Mini and I am streaming them via itunes to my ATV2. While watching them on the ATV2 about 30-40 minutes in the movie, the movie will stop and the ATV2 will reset. I will initially act as if in cannot connect to the network or the mac mini. Then it will find them and connect. At which point you can navigate back to the movie and watch it, until it happens again in 20-30 minutes.

I found exactly the same problem and discovered the issued disappeared when I "quit" all "downloading" programs whilst watching TV via ATV2. The issue was particularly frequent when i was watching while downloading using my torrent client (utorrent). Quitting this resulted in a immediate an permanent improvement provided the torrent client remained closed. Interestingly it did not seem to affect, to the same degree listening to music through iTunes while downloading!
After experimenting I also noted that the problem existed, albeit less frequently, when i was downloading movies from the iTunes store. I experimented with a variety of Apple and non-Apple routers and ethernet cables. As long as i was downloading there was an issue using the ATV. For what its worth I also noted that when the ATV2 went awry it also occasionally coincided with a temporary outage on my ADSL connection. After all the experimenting i have concluded its the ATV2 that is the route cause and not the router/network arrangement etc.
Anyone want to try fixing the problem this way? i cant believe that its a coincidence.
