Screen dimming/flickering & power source alternating on 1GHz model

I have a 12" 1GHz Powerbook running 10.5.6 that has developed 2 problems, (possibly simultaneously? I can't say for certain). The first problem being that the screen has started dimming and then coming back to "normal," at rate of about every second, so that it is almost flickering.
The second problem is that when I have it plugged in, (with a McNally power adapter, that I have used for a few years with no problems), it sometimes alternates between showing the icon for using the battery and then back to saying it's running of the cord, and this will go on for a long time, and sometimes it will go from saying that the battery is practically fully charged to saying that it is at only 6%, (always 6%), (it is a relatively new battery also). I recently tried a brand new power cord, and had the same problems. And sometimes when it says there is only 6% battery left, and is not recognizing that it is in fact plugged in, it does prompt me to plug it in before it goes to sleep, but often it does not and just continues to say there is only 6% battery power left and never puts itself to sleep.
Someone suggested it could be a bad logic board, (this was mainly in reference to the screen flicker). Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello,
Powerbook Pro - 10.4.11
I have exactly the same issues, with no solution yet. It does seem like some kind of spontaneous sleep issue, as the sleeping light by the latch goes on.
To save you some trouble, here is what I have done, with NO solution yet.
- Reformat and reload of Tiger
- reset PMU
- reset PRAM
- reset Open Firmware
- test with power adapter only, no battery
- test with battery, no power adapter
Interestingly, when resetting the Open Firmware, I let it sit for half an hour, with no blinking. Note that this mode is not the normal Mac OS X, but a black and white screen. This test seems to indicate that it is a software issue, not a hardware issue? Despite having reformatted and loaded everything from scratch.
Any suggestions for me?

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Screen dimming when using battery power

I have made sure that "automatically reduce the brightness..." option is UNchecked and yet my screen still dims after ~2 minutes. (and yes, I have made sure that I am making this setting for "Battery").
Anything else that might be causing this?
    Thanks!
    BT

this is a known, common problem of which there is no official solution.
You can try disconnecting and reconnecting your power source
    Resetting your PMU
    Locking the "preferences" under power
Otherwise no fix... It seems to be related to both power settings and the screen saver

  • HT1414 My iphone 4s is stuck in the CONNECT TO ITUNES screen (appears everytime i turn it on or connect it to a power source)

It all started when i tried to update to iOs 6 but then, my battery drained. I charged it (va power source) and waited for the red battery bar icon to appear. However, it did not appear. Instead a CONNECT TO THE ITUNES screen appeared even when i'm not connected to a  laptop. It was stuck there. When i turned it off and on again, the same screen appears even my iphone is not connected to any kind of power source.
    What should i do?
i tried turning it off and on again
tried restarting it by pressing the wake button and the home button (a lot of times already), still the same
i tried restoring it (noe effect)

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...

  • HT1119 BATTERY IS DISPLAYING (NOT CHARGING) -What to do if your Mac Book Pro 13" even if it is on the power source adapter. I have dim all the lights and other energy saver as instructed. Any advice please .

Hi- My Macbook pro 13" is not charging and displaying the ( not charging ) sign evenif it is in the power source & adapter. Have tried all the dim all display lights and close unsed applications ( except not too sure about the close running applications)
    Please help ?

Does the light come on in the power connector that connects to the Mac? If not then it is not getting any power. That light is either Green or Amber. Green for fully (and or Almost Fully) charged and Amber when the system is charging the battery. No light means the AC adapter is either not getting any power from the Wall Outlet or the AC adapter or the Mac is broken. In either of the last 2, broken AC adapter or broken Mac, you can replace the AC adapter yourself but if it's the Mac then only Apple can fix that.
Not much troubleshooting to do. You either don't have power to the AC adapter or the AC adapter is broken or the Mac is broken. It is one of those 3 things.

  • Request quick answer! Will it hurt my Macbook Air to be plugged into a "Uni Pak II" which is a dimming power source?

I'm at a conference and the only plug is a "Uni Pak II" which is a dimming power source (here's the manual).
At first my charging indicator on the end of the MBA plug didn't light, but I slid up the analog slider and it lit up (I knew it had worked yesterday!).
Is there any chance of it harming my MBA or power supply to use this?
    Thank you!

Is it difficult to configure Time Capsule in bridge mode
No, it is part of the original setup and configuration, which is guided by AirPort Utility, the application that is used to configure the Time Capsule.
and does it work well with the aforementioned Netgear wireless router?
Works fine since the Netgear will continue to provide the wireless network and serve as the main router on the network
In addition, do Windows PC's backup flawlessly to Time Capsule too?
I cannot speak to that question, since I do not use a PC. I would not expect a PC to work seamlessly with a Time Capsule since the TC was designed to backup Mac computers.
You would have to use a backup application that is designed for use on a Windows computer. Whether or not a given Windows application will work with the Time Capsule and Mac operating system is open to question. You should ask a lot of questions about any Windows application that you might be considering to make sure that it will do what you want.
In that regard, I would suggest that you should probably plan to use a separate hard drive specifically to backup the PC.

  • HT1766 My iPad has a frozen message on the screen which says "This iPad hasn't been backed up.  Backups happen when this iPad is plugged, etc."  I have connected the iPad to a power source and the iPad charged but the message is still frozen on my device.

My iPad is frozen with the message that the iPad is not backed up.  I thought that it automatically backed up when I plugged the device into a power source.  I have done that but the machine will not even open.

Try giving it a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds or so until it reboots and see if that helps.

  • No Battery; Power Source: Battery. SMC Reset didn't work.

    Hey guys,
Ok, so I spilled a small amount of water on my macbook on Halloween. I didn't know what to as usually I am very careful and this has never happened before. The MB continued to act normally, so I cleaned it up and turned it upside down and tried to get all the water out. I also sprayed ino the vent with compressed air (later found out that was a stupid idea). Anyways, I turned it off then closed it up and went back to it about 5 hours later. There was condensation on the screen and it wasn't turning on except with the battery cable removed from the logic board and the magsafe plugged in. Even then, the keys weren't working. So I took the MB completely apart and replaced the keyboard after finding no water evidence or corrosion. Once reassembled, I plugged in the magsafe (which had a dim light) and tried turning it on by pressing the power button, just like regular. The battery indicator lights on the side of the computer also were not working. The fan turned on on high speed and the startup noise sounded, and the screen started to light up, but then it would almost instantly stop. It did this twice. I then started it into disk utility, which said there were no disk issues, so naturally I didn't repair anything. I then shut it back off and started it in safe verbose mode. It started up (fan still running high speed) and went completely to the regular desktop screen after letting me log in and everything. Everything on the startup screen was normal and nothin was wrong with the display as far as flickering or anything, except that the battery icon had an X in it and when clicked on, said "no battery available", and then "power source: battery." Since the fan was still running full speed though, I shut it down again and did the SMC reset, which fixed the issue with the fan and the Magsafe indicator light, but not the battery indicator lights or the battery icon issue(battery not being recognized?) When I option click on the battery icon also, it says the condition is normal, however it still says the whole no battery available/power source: battery. I'm curious to know if I should try perhaps resetting the SMC again since it helped the first time, or if I need to buy a replacement battery. The Mac Chat person also said that it might be the battery sensor on the logic board, which I'm extremely worried about because I cannot afford to replace the logic board. Is there any kind of test that I can do/run (besides trying to see if a new battery works) to see if the logic board is working properly? I'm not very well versed in computers, so it seems to me since everything else was working fine, the logic board might be ok? I suppose that specific sensor might be messed up and nothing else, but I would just think that other things might not be working also if it was a logic board issue. Also, does anyone know where this sensor might be located on the LB? Perhaps I can check it out? Thanks in advance everyone.

I'm sorry, I think I left out that I took the computer apart after it wouldn't turn on the first time (about 5 hours post spill) and specifically when I put everything back together.
I took it apart about five hours post spill and cleaned it thoroughly and found no water except for a few small drops sitting on the optical drive. They were on the plastic housing of the optical drive (the side facing the bottom of the MB) and didn't not infiltrate the drive itself. There was absolutely no water elsewhere. There was evidence of liquid in the form of corrosion on the inside portion of the ir sensor near the hard drive, which was quickly cleaned with alcohol. There was no corrosion elsewhere. Again, each and every component (LB, OD, HD, battery, backlight & keyboard assembly, speakers, microphone, wireless card, etc) was dismantled about five hours post spill and cleaned/inspected for water damage and was left in the dismantled state in an aerated area until I received the replacement keyboard today and put it back together (which was today). So taken apart/cleaned on 10/31 and put back together on 11/15.
The closest Genius Bar to me is about four hours away and I cannot afford to send it in or drive there only to hear them give me an astronomical charge primarily just because they are the ones servicing it and I cannot afford a new LB if that is also the case, so I'm hoping that someone may know any answers based on the information provided that perhaps I didn't seat the battery correctly, or that I need to redo the SMC reset, or buy a new battery, or that there is some sort of test I can run through the computer that can show me how the LB is working. If there is such a test, then I can find out if I need to give up hope or not and stop trying all these other things or if it is reasonable to perhaps buy a battery or try the SMC reset again. I really don't want to go straight to it being the LB if hopefully that isn't the case.
If it makes any difference, I almost always kept the MB plugged in for the two years I have owned it and hardly ever let the battery die. I did not know about battery calibration prior to research for this matter and therefore never did it unless by accident (i.e., didn't have my charger with me and it died).
    TIA everyone.

  • Screen dims and multi-language "restart" message appears

Currently, every time Safari is used, the entire screen dims and a multi-language (German, Chinese, etc.) message comes on the screen saying that I must physically power down my machine and restart. No error message is given, nor are any other options allowed, as the keyboard and mouse are rendered useless.
I have rebooted the machine several times, including powering down the cable modem, but the problem persists.
This problem has occurred in the past, but seemed to clear itself, only to reoccur starting yesterday (23 Sep 05). I can't shake the feeling that this problem is more in the OS X arena than in Safari's, but testing does not seem to bear out my feelings - all other installed applications appear to run properly and this phenomenon of screen dimming with forced power down and restart does not occur with other applications.
    Any thoughts? Thanks! Bob Meyer.

    I suggest the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If you continue to have the problem, then reinstall the OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo) updater.

  • Screen dimming issue (?)

Hi, sometimes, (usually when web surfing) my screen dims on its own, at first I thought there was a problem with the screen, but then I realized that the brightness meter does go down, and raises again if I press the brightness button, BUT when its going down, the brightness does NOT display on screen, it just goes down... Also, it is like crazy drastic, it just dims enough to **** me off, like a few notches, very annoying, its been driving me crazzy since I bought it just never thought to ask anyone for help... Any ideas how to fix this?

Go to System Preferences Hardware Displays and uncheck the box for "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes".
Then go to the Energy Saver and uncheck "Slightly dim the display when using this power source" for the Power Adapter and the Battery selections.

  • Music won't play unless connected to power source/charging

Music will not play on my iPhone 4S unless connected to sync cord and the sync cord must be charging.  The battery is full.  I had an issue before with the music starting/stopping sporadically  and the iPhone not recognizing when headphones were plugged in.  That seemed to resolve itself once I updated the software.  Now this....  If I disconnect from sync cord/power supply, the play button on the screen gets glitchy and the music stops.

    This sequence works:
turn on the power source (e.g. Logitech portable speakers)
power on and connect iPhone to power source via 30-pin to Lightning adapter
    connect the earphones
    start Pandora

  • My iphone 5 won't turn on but when plugged into power source it keeps showing apple logo?

My iPhone 5 won't turn on at all and then when I plug it into a power source either into a plug socket or into my laptop with the USB cable it keeps showing start up screen with apple logo over and over again on a loop.
I have tried holding the top and front button together, this didn't work. I have also tried connecting to my laptop and following the reboot steps that I found on another discussion forum. Neither worked for me. The phone just won't reboot and it keeps continuing to loop the apple logo screen over and over without me touching anything.
The iPhone won't even connect to itunes and so itunes seems to not recognise my phone because its not even turning on (just continually apple logo screen appears for 5 seconds, goes to black screen and then repeats).
I don't know what is happening to it! Can anyone help? Is it a fault with the hardware or have I dont something to it? The next appointment at the genius bar for me is monday so I'm going to keep looking for any more recent ones until then but I really need to get it sorted before then so if anyone can help that would be great!
    Thanks

Try a reset when your iPhone is plugged into the charger as you say it does not respond when not plugged in...
Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
See if it will charge after this.
