Screen dimming vs. "lock"

Is there any way to get the iPod Touch to automatically dim the screen after a short period of non-use without going into "locked mode"? I would like to have it conserve battery power by fully dimming the screen but not have to press the home key, slide my finger and then wait for it to reconnect to my network.

i don't think that was the question
that much was obvious from your response. i think it was however, and the 'helpful' star would suggest it was.

Anna,
Thanks for your help. I did not realize that the sleep/power button allows you to shut off the screen without shutting off the device. I still believe that we should be able to set it to automatically shut-off only the screen backlight and then resume when the screen is touched.
you CAN set it to automatically shut off, (using the auto-lock under settings, general) but it will lock the screen as described. this makes sense to me, as it will lock and prevent you 'pressing buttons' accidentally, while it is in your pocket.
but if you want, suggest it to apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html

  • Pre time stops "working" when screen dims/locks

the time on my pre stops "working" when the screen dims/turns off - what i mean by this is that when I wake up the phone the "old" time (time that i last had the phone awake) displays and then quickly updates to the current time.
The worst part about this is that alarms will not work because it does not know the real time when the screen is off!!
If the phone is on the touchstone everything works fine
    can anyone help!!!?

  • Screen dimming delay . . .

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to 4.0.1 (quick and painless unlike the 4.0 release which was 9+ hours) last night and have noticed this morning that the time it takes for the screen to dim (before eventually turning off) after a period of inactivity has dramatically reduced. I can't remember the time that it took before as it was quite a lengthy delay, but now I reckon it's a period of approx 40 seconds before the screen dims. I think it used to be a couple of minutes. Has anyone else noticed this? Also is there any way to alter this timing (just like a MBP or iMac display in the Energy Saver System Pref Pane).
    As always, any advice appreciated.

Neil was correct - auto-lock controls how long before the screen dims, followed shortly after by the phone locking. Passcode lock is a separate function. If you set auto-lock to never your screen won't dim. I suspect it's set to 1 minute at present =0)

  • Dimming before locking

Was the software recently changed so that when the phone is inactive for a few moments the screen goes dim before locking? My auto brightness is set to off so I know it's not that.

I think it has always done that (or at least my previous phone did).

  • Google Maps screen dimming

Is there anyway to stop the screen from dimming in Google Maps other than to turn off Auto-Lock? Even when tracking my screen dims after a minute...

    Hello dirwuf,
The way how to make the screen not DIM AT ALL, is to go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock > Never
This makes the screen never dim, please tell me if it works!

A magazine's app on my iPad has stopped working.  When I open the Newsstand folder and click on the app, the screen dims briefly, then returns to the Newsstand folder. The other app in my Newsstand folder (Wall Street Journal) opens without any problem, and this magazine's app opens just fine on my wife's iPad.
I have deleted the app and reinstalled it from the Apple store and that makes no difference.  I have also done a hard reboot on my iPad with no result.
Any thoughts about what might be wrong?

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • I dropped my iphone (not from a great height) and now it won't turn on however when I plug it in the white apple shows on my screen. My lock button has been broken for awhile so I can't even try switch it on!

What can I do? I dropped my iphone (not from a great height) and now it won't turn on however when I plug it in the white apple shows on my screen. My lock button has been broken for awhile so I can't even try switch it on!

Once you have a proven, working Charger... Charge the Device for a couple of hours. Then try to turn it on.
    If no joy...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    If the issue persists...
Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

My colleague recently synched his phone and now has a full keyboard on the lock screen.  My lock screen keypad is set up like phone keys (alphanumeric).  He's wondering why his is different, and he also now cannot unlock it.  Anyone have this happen?  He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version.  He synched and now can't get back in.  He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine.  Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

  • Screen dimming

hey, i'm going to hook my macbook to my HDTV via the DVI adapter and then HDMI to the TV. My question is this: My Macbook has a screen dimming function, whether it's plugged into a wall socket or not after a short time of no operation the screen goes dim. Will the screen of my television go dim?
If so, how can I avoid this issue? I'm using Tiger and there seems no way to adjust this setting.

thanks for replying Simon. I have answered my question in a way. I don't know if the television set will dim but I've found out how to stop the dimming on the computer display in Tiger and on Leopard. You are right it's in Energy Saver settings. Uncheck the "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" this is in the options menu in Energy Saver. Then put the sliders on 'Never.'
    Thanks

  • Password prompt after screen saver or lock screen

I am running Yosemite on two Macs – an early-2008 MBP 15" and a mid-2010 MBP 13". Both are configured for password after screen saver or when waking up. I have hot corners configured to enable screen saver (lower left), lock screen (upper right), disable screen saver (lower right). On awakening from either screen saver or lock screen, the 15" requests the password in a screen similar to the login after boot or switch user screen – the fullscreen, blurry background, prompt in the center. The 13" prompts for a password in an ordinary modal dialogue window that includes a lock icon and displays on a black background. The 13" has an external monitor attached, but the behavior is the same if it's disconnected. Both systems have one user, and identical settings in Users and Groups. The behavior is the same whether the Guest user is enabled or disabled.
I can't find any settings to account for the difference, even obscure ones shown in Onyx. Any ideas as to why the password prompt is handled differently in these two cases? Thanks in advance...

  • How do you turn off larger dynamic type on the iphone4 when your screen orientation is locked (vertically)?

So I have the iphone 4 with the latests update ios7.
So I went on settings > general > accessibility > larger type.
And I clicked "on" for "larger dynamic type"
Now my font is so big I can't even see apps that I have and such
I want to turn it "off" but my screen orientation is locked! (I can't move my phone horizontally) I think if I can move my phone horizontally I'll be able to see the on/off button for larger dynamic type.
I tried sliding the bottom upwards to turn off screen lock orientation but it's not on my screen because my font is set to a really big size that the "screen orientation lock button" didn't make it to the screen

Turning on Dynamic type and increasing it shold not have that effect.
Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • Screen dims and multi-language "restart" message appears

Currently, every time Safari is used, the entire screen dims and a multi-language (German, Chinese, etc.) message comes on the screen saying that I must physically power down my machine and restart. No error message is given, nor are any other options allowed, as the keyboard and mouse are rendered useless.
I have rebooted the machine several times, including powering down the cable modem, but the problem persists.
This problem has occurred in the past, but seemed to clear itself, only to reoccur starting yesterday (23 Sep 05). I can't shake the feeling that this problem is more in the OS X arena than in Safari's, but testing does not seem to bear out my feelings - all other installed applications appear to run properly and this phenomenon of screen dimming with forced power down and restart does not occur with other applications.
    Any thoughts? Thanks! Bob Meyer.

    I suggest the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If you continue to have the problem, then reinstall the OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo) updater.

  • External screen dims when opening different apps?

    Hi All ----
Seems my external screen dims and rectifies when opening different apps - like some kind of brightness adjustment going on... it doesnt happen on the MBP, just on the external screen --- i've checked all possible settings on Ext. Displ. / re-booted / repaired perms... cant quite figure it out.
I dont think this is energy-saver related.
Many thnx for any help in adv. ---
    cheers,

The problem with that is, it's hard to put it back together without assuring that you're not pinching the cable again.
    Instructions can be found here.
As he says, the cable can be found at Small Dog Electronics:
    http://www.smalldog.com/product/43417
If you need replacement feet, they can be found at MicroDoc.
The specific link you need on PowerBook Tech's website can be found here.
If it looks like too much for you to handle, you may want to check out DT & T Computer Services. Perhaps in a metropolitan area like Austin you can check the Yellow Pages and find a technician willing to match the price.
At one point, DominionTech in Colchester, Vermont was offering the repair for $79.90, but I'm not sure if that price is still available.
    Good luck.

  • Screen dimming issue (?)

Hi, sometimes, (usually when web surfing) my screen dims on its own, at first I thought there was a problem with the screen, but then I realized that the brightness meter does go down, and raises again if I press the brightness button, BUT when its going down, the brightness does NOT display on screen, it just goes down... Also, it is like crazy drastic, it just dims enough to **** me off, like a few notches, very annoying, its been driving me crazzy since I bought it just never thought to ask anyone for help... Any ideas how to fix this?

Go to System Preferences Hardware Displays and uncheck the box for "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes".
Then go to the Energy Saver and uncheck "Slightly dim the display when using this power source" for the Power Adapter and the Battery selections.
