Screen dims after keyboard use

After several minutes of inaction on the keyboard, my screen will dim around 30%. A bit annoying when watching a video stream, for example. I'm assuming it's just a basic preference setting, but couldn't find it anywhere on my Mac or in the forum. Anyone know this one?

As an alternate, use the freeware utility Caffine @ http://lightheadsw.com/caffeine/ I use it on my laptop. Easier than changing the preference every time.

  • Screen Dims after a few minutes

My screen dims after a few minutes. It is annoying when trying to watch a news segment or DVD.I have went to the energy section and can't find anything to do with Dimming unless I am looking in the wrong section. The only thing I can find are settings adjustments for screen saver and such.
This is my fisrt Mac and I have had it for only 4 days.Yikes!!
I have only seen a couple people post on this subject.I take it that maybe there is no real solution except to take it to Apple.
    `

+~ Go into System Preferences open Energy Saver choose Options. Uncheck Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep. ~+
I don't mind the dimming (except in extended viewing situations), but is the apparent battery-saving effect of the dimming preferable to the presumable wear-&-tear on the screen of the frequent brightness changes that result from having 'automatic dimming' active?
Also, is there a way to put this under real-time control so that you can switch b&f between having/not having automatic dimming without having to keep opening System Prefs. each time?
    Thanks.

  • Screen dims after a minute or so

How do you set the time it takes the screen to dim after not touching the notebook for a minute or so?

I was wondering the same exact thing. In the Energy Saver area, I have "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:" set to Never, "Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:" set to 1.5 hours, and "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" unchecked. I also have "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" unchecked in the Display settings.
Even with all these settings, the screen goes dim after about 1 minute of inactivity. Can't seem to figure out what would cause it.

  • Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
    Can anyone help us?

  • New Mac Mini -- permanent screen dims after installing Mavericks

Hello -- hope you can help.  We just purchased a Mac Mini and installed Mavericks on it.  It's driving a Panasonic Viera Plasma TV via HDMI, which is its only monitor/display.
As soon as we finished the install and authorized it as a computer for my iTunes account (I did these nealy at the same time so can't be exact at what time the event occurred), the screen dimmed drastically -- from quite bright to very dull.  Has any one experienced this, and have you come up with a solution for it?  Or do you have any ideas?
I have ensured that the radio buttons in Mission Control are off for multiple display options.
Thanks so much.  Look forward to your response.

Some people have experienced problems with monitors attached via HDMI. Most of them are having issues of the windows resizing to an un-responsive window.
For some, the fix was to do a SMC reset. Since you have a Mac Mini, it's pretty easy. Power it down, unplug it for 15 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 5 seconds and turn it on and it should be reset.

  • Screen dimming after 20 seconds - not coming back to life

This morning, when I started my laptop, it was working fine. THen after about 20 seconds the screen went really dim - dimmer than you can make it go normally, and too dim to use, but you can still see somethign.
I put it too sleep, then brought it back again, and it came to life - but then did the same thing.
Can anybody tell me what is wrong?
    Thanks

You also may want to check TVT Power Manager; there are a few options in there that dim the display, some of which really dim the display quite a bit.

  • Macbook air 11.6' (late 2010 model) screen dims after few seconds and does not recover.

    Hi,
I am running win7 under bootcamp on a macbook air 11.6'' late 2010 model (1.4 dual core, 4Gb memory, 64Gb ssd). A few days ago the screen started to dim a few seconds after bootup. Even if I pres any of the keys it does not light up again. However, if I connect to an external display it works fine. I use it for work and often I am mobile so I really need the display to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

Found another forum with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1560774, including another youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaGOKuwqsaw. The severity of the problem in this link looks worse than my problem. Mine is less severe than what's in this video, but more severe that what's in the first youtube link I provided.
The posts in that forum claim: 1) the problem began after upgrading to a newer OS, 2) it occurs after waking from sleep, and 3) that closing the lid for 10 seconds is a work-around fix.
Would be great if Apple fixes this. I won't buy another Mac, desktop or laptop, if they don't. Macs are too expensive to only get 2 years from, and in my opinion thay are not that much better than other options. I'm going to post a bug report on Apple's web site.

  • Screen dimming after dropping computer

I have an HP Pavilion dm4-1253cl - Windows7 64-bit. I dropped the computer and the left, front corner of the keyboard broke. Now the screen is getting very dim, especially the fields where data is entered. Can you tell me if there is anything I can do to fix it?  I do not know much about taking apart a computer but can follow directions well.
I also have a Mini 110-3118CL that was also dropped and screen started getting a lot of vertical lines and then stopped working. Is this fixable?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for writing me back so promptly, and also for your input.
Which picture of the damage on the dm4 would help, the picture of the screen or of where the computer cracked?
I know this might sound dumb, but,  on the Mini, Do you mean the actual screen needs to be replaced? Can you tell me how I would go about replacing the screen on the Mini so I can order it?
    Your assistance  is much appreciated.

  • VZ Navigator Screen Dim after ICS update

Since the update to Android 4.0.4, the VZ Navigator application my Droid Razr Maxx is almost unusable during the day.  Entering the application immediately dims the display so low that it is almost unreadable.   Exiting the application immediately returns the screen back to normal.
I have disabled 'night' mode on VZ Navigator, uninstalled and reinstalled the VZ Navigator application (currently at 8.0).
Has anyone else seen this behavior?

I have the same problem after I accidentally installed ICS this afternoon. Also affected Navigator unless kept touching the screen at timeout.  Called tech support--no help.  Read threads then TRIED THIS TEMPORARY SOLUTION:1
    1. Go to Preferences->Display->NIGHT MODE->ON.
    2. Set Night Mode Brightness to 100 (slide right).
May have to take phone display off automatic and manually set brightness.
I also set screen timeout to 10 minutes for Navigator (Google) to prevent dimming until solve that one too
A few other points.  VZNavigator, which was working perfectly on my Droid Razr Maxx prior to ICS, provides your speed and posted speed limits on screen.  Has a better display in some ways (3D is pretty real) and has found better routes at times. My wife has a Droid Razr and now also agrees VZN has some advantages.  Neither is perfect, glad to have both so when one is not working or gives bad route can switch to the other.  And it's $5/ month and worth it.
When she upgraded to ICS, it caused battery drain almost visibly dropping.  Full charge gone in less than an hour.
I also found some apps are SLOWER in loading on my Maxx and ICS changed my settings on email and other apps.  I personally do not like the newer visuals/graphics--harder to see, some controls easier in previous version, widgets had to be reloaded after power down trying to solve dark screen problem.
Lots of things they could have fixed instead of an "a la Microsoft" let's give 'em lots of "new" features and looks (even if they don't like it).  After all, we're Microsoft (substitute Verizon)--we're big, we don't have to care.
I loved the tech response (translated) "we'll get to it".

  • Screen dim after battery failure

after my battery ran down and unit shut off, my screen is so dim upon startup that i can hardly read it. the brightness control is not helping. any suggestions? (the battery has been in need of replacement for a while) thanks

it could be that you have the auto brightness thing on? you may be near a bright light and have the auto brightness feature in the brightness settings turned on. that feature is ******** IMO

  • Video Screen dimming while filming using iPhone 6

As you can see in this video..
it seems as if a light was turned off while in fact nothing happened...
And this has occured in several videos which i have filmed using iPhone 6
    http://youtu.be/jLms0KahOt4

    UPDATE
So, after working with the guys at Apple, they were able to provide a solution.  Now I have no problems using Home Sharing with my iPhone 6 Plus!!!
(I should add that I have the Linksys Advanced Dual-Band N Router (E2500))
The issue was fixed by giving one of the wi-fi channels a different name, thus splitting the channels into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  Then, I connected my iPhone to one channel (2.4 GHz) and my MacBook Pro to the other channel (5GHz).  In this configuration, I have had no issues streaming my music and video.
It seems that the problem is some kind of interference between both devices when using the same channel (i.e., when both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel share the same name).

  • White Screen 20" iMac a1224, chimes, boots, screen dims after a while. When mirrored on external display seems fine. Any thoughts?

Title says it all. 20" iMac a1224 when I start it up it chimes and seems to boot wireless keyboard connected to it and makes noises, wired mouse. Connected display to it and randomly clicked and dragged until I pulled preferences over to external display and set to mirrored. everything "seems" to functioning fine besides built in screen. Not sure what other tests to do, any input would be great.

    OK here is an update.
    iMac 20" 2 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 2GB 667 MHz ddr2 sdram    serial number - W873688AX85
I replaced the harddrive - WD caviar blue 500gb SATA III 7200rpm 16mb cache WD5000AAKX
Installed Mountain Lion 10.8.5 with the iMac display disconnected, (the plug directly to the right of the wireless card), and connected to external display. One partition.
Did all of the current updates
Powered off, disconnected power cord, connected internal display, rebooted - still white screen with extended desktop on external display
Read something about the four green LEDs. With the internal display connected, the fourth LED from the left with the LEDs being on the left of the RAM slot, is on. This LED does not come on when the internal display is disconnected.
From here I just dont know if its the display or the loic board. Are there any tests I can do to narrow it down?
I saw that the G5 had problems with capacitors, can this be similar?
    Thanks

  • IPod music screen freezes after not using it for a while.

If I exit the music screen (while a song is still playing) and then return after a while, the screen will be stuck where I left it. It will show the same song even if another one has started and I will have to wait for a few seconds before it finally shows the new one. If anyone has any idea on how to fix it, i would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - If problem persists the try a restore from backup
    - If it still comes back try a restore to factory defaults/new iPod

  • Pavilion Touchsmart 23 screen dim after sleep since Windows 10

I have tried this, and it has not changed the problem. FYI, adaptive brightness was off by default on my computer after I upgraded to Window 10. Please escalate our issue, it is driving me crazy!

I also have a HP Touchsmart 23 with Radeon HD 8570D display adaptor exhibiting the same issue.  Microsoft and HP report no available updates and the adaptive brightness is OFF. There are no brightness controls on any control panel page including the power managment sections. The Windows 10 notifications pull-up for settings does not have a brightness slider.   Rebooting is the only method I have found to restore display brightness to a usable level.  Previously on  this thread it was stated ....According to the available list of supported drivers for your desktop computer, there is currently no Windows 10 graphics or chipset software published at the moment.  The orginal post is from August 4, so now more than one week later a solution has not been forthcoming.    Please escalate this issue as HP was reminding me to join in the Windows 10 upgrade and now that I did,  I have an ongoing problem with the hp pavilion 23.   Seems HP missed the boat and was recommending the upgrade knowing the chipset in the computer was incompatable.   Shame.
