Screen dims and window says to power off. Is this serious?

This is the second time this has happened in the past month. I had a detailed description of the the first event, but since Apple decided to completely rejigger the support forum, delete all of my previous questions and replace it all with this far more confusing format, that conversation is gone.
I copied the malfunction report, but it means nothing to me. I'm hoping someone might be able to tell me if I have an issue for which I need to be concerned.
I thank you in advance.
Peter

You've had a kernel panic.  You can visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics and to learn more about them.
Yours appears to have been triggered by the video system.  I would start by uninstalling your Symantec anti-virus software.  This type of software is known for being problematic.  If the problem persists and you see lines like this in the panic log:

This mini is operating OSX 10.6.8 and trying to update to Mountain Lion but upgrade stops and a black overscreen displays saying to power off and power on.  The upgrade fails.  What's the problem?

    Hi Fred,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Screen dims and multi-language "restart" message appears

Currently, every time Safari is used, the entire screen dims and a multi-language (German, Chinese, etc.) message comes on the screen saying that I must physically power down my machine and restart. No error message is given, nor are any other options allowed, as the keyboard and mouse are rendered useless.
I have rebooted the machine several times, including powering down the cable modem, but the problem persists.
This problem has occurred in the past, but seemed to clear itself, only to reoccur starting yesterday (23 Sep 05). I can't shake the feeling that this problem is more in the OS X arena than in Safari's, but testing does not seem to bear out my feelings - all other installed applications appear to run properly and this phenomenon of screen dimming with forced power down and restart does not occur with other applications.
    Any thoughts? Thanks! Bob Meyer.

    I suggest the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If you continue to have the problem, then reinstall the OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo) updater.

  • I have lost my iphone and it was in power off mode

i lost my iphone just this evening ,and it was in power off mode.i believe its still not found by anyone since its still not ringing when i dial that number. i have filed a police complaint and ii logged in icloud to activate the find my iphone feature.keeping my fingers croosed. does anybody else know how to track it with the IMEI no.?

You cannot track an iPhone by IMEI. If someone finds it and turns it on where it
has access to WiFi or cellular service, it should show up on iCloud. You may wish
to put it into Lost Mode and display your contact information on the screen.

  • Blue screen on start up.  The wheel spin and the blue screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

When I start up my imac, I get a blue screen.  The wheel spin and the screen gets brighter for a second, then the blue screen dims and it repeats with the wheel.

Are you referring to the startup screen which is normally gray with the dark gray Apple logo or are you referring the login screen which is typically blue? If it's the latter you might give this a try:
Clearing Caches to Fix Login Problem
You will need to type some Unix commands. If you are not comfortable with this, I don't know of anything other than a re-install. But if you are careful, you should be OK. I recommend you print this out in a largish mono-spaced font so you don't miss any spaces (or add extra ones). Note that case is important.
Be careful. Some of these commands are dangerous, since you are going to be root.
Start up in Single-user Mode. When this has finished you will see a prompt ending in '#', although there may be other messages. Enter the following commands after the prompt:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. Wait a few seconds for 8-10 lines of output. If the last line says repairs were carried out, repeat this command until you get a message 'The volume <yourdiskname> appears to be OK'. Then continue with:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /Library/Preferences
    rm com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    rm com.apple.windowserver.plist
    cd /Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    cd /System/Library
    cd /System/Library/Caches
    rm -r *
    reboot
    Press RETURN after each command.
This should now take you to a proper login screen after the normal boot sequence. You should then Repair Permissions by using Disk Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities folder).
If it's the former then reinstall OS X. For Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

My iPad is low on memory and it says to turn off apps running in background . How do I do that

    Hello Skittles1202
It sounds like more of the storage of your iPad is full. Plug it into your computer and check in iTunes or on your iPad go to Settings > General > Usage and it will sort out in order of what is taking up the most space. Once you figure that out you can either delete what is not needed or import any photos that you may have to your computer. If you want to close out any application that you may have open previously, then double tap the home button and then swipe up on any app that you want to close

  • HT1430 I have been getting emails but recently I switch on and just find blank screen but the app says I am getting mail this is now happened to me twice any ideas?

I have been getting emails but recently I switch on and just find blank screen but the app says I am getting mail this is now happened to me twice any ideas?

    Quit mail like this.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.

Always remember to 'de-authorize' you computer when selling or sending for service. If sending for repairs you might not get the same mother board or HD back and some how this counts as an authorized computer against your count.

  • I pod  touch makes a shutter sound and goes to the power off slider screen for no reason tried restoring several times and wonder if it is an internal error this ipod has no camera

my ipod touch makes a shutter sound ( no camera on this ipod ) and then goes to the power off slider screen. It will do this several times and then screen goes blank have restored several times with no change is it terminal or can it be repaired this was purchased as a refurb

If you press and hold the home button and click on the sleep button once, the iPod will make a screenshot of your home screen and add it to the photos on your device.
If you don't press the home button or the sleep button during to do this, one of your buttons might be stuck.
Try to reset the iPod by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again, ignore the "slide to turn off" message when you press and hold the buttons.
