Screen dims to lowest setting randomly

F1-F2 brightness adjustment keys or any other key or even trackpad don't work to bring the brigthness back, it seems they are unresponsive for a while. After about 30 secs or so, the screen comes back to original brightness.
Now I unchecked "automacially adjust as ambient light changes"  but it didn't solve my problem. When I unchecked"automacially reduce brightness before display goes to sleep" option, it seemed to work but now I have to adjust the brightness myself to save energy.

why does my keyboard lighting stay on its lowest setting?

Negative, that was the first thing I tried. I've also reset the SMC, nothing.
I can see a little bit of light ubder the keys (white light, not blue) when I dim my screen to the lowest setting, but when I press F6 to strenghten the light, it does not get any brighter.

  • Screen dims randomly with Mac Pro - NOT a Macbook

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my screen will dim randomly when watching movies or YouTube.  This is on my early 2008 Mac Pro - not a Macbook Pro which seems to have this problem commonly.  I've searched and searched and lots of people have this problem with a Macbook Pro (battery saving feature or something) but there are no options to defeat screen dimming that I can find for a Mac Pro!! Mountain Lion just keeps getting worse and worse!
    HelP!

Hello, thanks for taking the time to help me out!
This is a 2008 MacPro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.4.
I am running two monitors: a HannsG HH281 and a Hewlett PAckard HP w2408h.
When this first was happening back in March 2013, I thought it had something to do with the ambient light sensor on the HP (the HannG doesnt have a light sensor), but it also might have has something to do with the dynamic contrast on the HannsG.  I had shut those features off, and I actually hadn't had this problem in a while and there has been a few Mountain Lion updates since then.
I just tried to reproduce this by turning on/off the dynamic contrast on the Hanns G - did not get the problem
again.  I also just turned the ambient light sensor on for the HP, and again, the problem did not occur.
So it is hard to say if the problem is gone away or not or if it just is not showing itself at the time being?

  • Is there a setting for iphone 4 to have the screen dim to black while on a call?

is there a setting for iphone 4 to have the screen dim to black while on a call?

If you put the phone to your ear, the proximity sensor darkens the display automatically. If you are just holding the phone in your hand or something similar, the proximity sensor is not activated.

  • Screen Dimming Setting Problems. . .

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this: In system preferences energy saver/options I have checked "automatically reduce brightness of display before sleep." The problem is that if I don't check that - -which I would prefer not - - my screen goes dark after about 60-90 seconds of inactivity. My ideal is to not have the screen dim and then go to screensaver but apparently there is no way to do this.
My question:Do others have this problem? If you solved it, how? All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks!

I talked to a product specialist from Apple (through Applecare after waiting for an hour!) and he acknowledged it is not supposed to behave the way you and I are describing. He sent m a little program that does a "data dump" which I then emailed back to him which he sent on to the engineers, and they are supposed to get back to me the next couple of days. We'll see.
Obviously, you're in the same boat. I find it totally obnoxious to have to touch the trackpad every minute or so to keep the screen bright. Major glitch.
I'll post again if Apple solves this one. . .

  • IPhone 5 screen dimming

My iPhone 5 screen keeps going completely dark and I have to struggle to see the icons and navigate to brightness and fix it , but when I get to the brightness seething it is where I left it ( not on lowest setting ) also have have a issue with my sound not working ? Same type of thing sound dims down and won't get loud unless I got play a song or so syncing similar then it like kicks on

    Hello Uthomas,
The way how to make the screen not DIM AT ALL, is to go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock > Never
This makes the screen never dim, please tell me if it works!

  • Screen dims

I have a 20" duo-core imac (white) at work and a 20" duo-core (aluminum) at home and have the same issue on both machines where the screen will dim if the computer is inactive for a brief period. Its not that the computer is going to sleep with the screen going black but more that the brightness level changes suddenly from normal to the lowest setting. If I move the mouse or use the keyboard the brightness level pops back up. The screen dimming almost seems like an energy saving feature but I cannot find any reference to it in the help section and there is no setting or control that I can find in system preferences. A friend of mine with a new MacBook reports the same problem.
    Thanks

    Hi Reid
DML is correct "System Preferences / Energy Saver / Options" and uncheck : Automatically reduce the brightness...... But you also need the have a look at the following Apple article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304092
Note: The issue will return each time the computer is restarted.

  • IBook G4 - suddenly shuts off and sometimes screen dims

I have a new iBook G4, less than a year old. I've been very happy with it except for this week. A few days ago the screen unexpectedly dimmed to its lowest setting, even though when I tried to change the screen brightness it showed it at its highest setting. I was able to fix this by closing the computer and reopening it.
Now I was working on the internet (not many applications open even) and it just shut off. No notice, lots of battery power. The left part of the computer made a noise (like the fake laser noise from powerpoint) when it shut off. I was able to immediately turn my computer back on, but when it loaded OS X it informed me that my data and time had been set back to 2001. The clock adjusted this on its own and the computer appears to be working fine, but i did nothing to warrant it shutting itself off and now I am worried I will lose my data in the midst of my final exams. Any advice? The computer is still under warrenty and I have apple care, but I am hesistant to just get the computer fixed or even get it replaced given the problems I've been having. I owned a iBook G3 before this and never had any problems with it.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
You may want to try resetting the PMU.
I take it you were working under battery power when this happened?
Is it possible that your battery status indicator is incorrect? Calibrating the battery periodically can help keep the battery status indicator display accurate.

  • Screen Dim

My screen suddenly dimmed, and I am unable to revert it to its original state. I have attempted to boot from the DVD, however the screen remains dimmed. I also ran the hardware test, and no probems were found. The "dimming" keys are also non-responsive in the way that they do not affect the dimming of the screen at all (however the dimming bar shows and changes accordingly).
    Thanks in advance,
    Hans Olav Gorset.

I've suffered the same situation- my first "dim" happened 3 days after I got my MBP from Apple for a fan assembly and logic board replacement. I thougt the screen was black, and it was only by tilting in the light could I faintly see the desktop. Nothing helped, resetting PMU, PRAM, numerous reboots.
I took it to the Apple re-seller where it was last serviced (waiting in line for a 'Genius' at the Apple Store, behind all the folks who cannot get email to work, is not very enticing). Everyone at the store saw the problem, tried the same procedures... byt the time it got to their tech, he did a PMU reset and got the screen up.
So it works okay for a week or so. Yesterday, I am talking on the phone, and I see the screen flash once, then the lit area shrinks to about 67% of the top left, it flashes one or two more times, and goes completely dimmed again. I did a PMU reset; the screen just flashed bright once on start=up and went dim. I did a PRAM reset. Nothing.
I call my friends at the store again, and they say it would need to go to Apple and need to be re-produced, uhless I want to go to the Apple Store and make a case for an in-store replacement.
I decided just to shut it down and let it rest a few hours. About 5 hours later, I did again a PMU reset, this time actually holding the button about 10 seconds, and letting it sit a giid minute before rebooting.
Lo and behold, the **** thing works. So here's the rub, I can use it for a while but have no idea when it will leave my dark and dry again. If I send it back to Apple, I have anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks not being able to work, and risk the fac they cannot reproduce the situation.
    I feel rather stuck.
BTW, the dimness is equivalent to taking the screen brightness controls to their lowest setting.

  • T410s blacklight flicker on lowest setting.

Often, but not all the time,  on my 410s, when the backlight is at the lowest setting, 0, I will notice a slight flicker in the screen. Increasing the setting to 1 makes it go away immediately. I have never noticed it before, but of course I usually don't use the backlight on 0.  My system is integrated Intel graphics only, and I'm running the latest drivers as of April, 2011.This occurs at both 50Hz and 60Hz.
I'm wondering if this is something I should be concerned about. Should I look into sending it in? My 1-year warranty has a little over 2 months left, and I'm not sure if I should upgrade to a longer one if this is the beginning of screen problems.
My problem is pretty much the exact same one as posted here. Except I'm running the 410s.
    Any thoughts?

  • Screen dims to dark on its own during use. Software/hardware problem?

Since I upgraded to 10.4.10 and had a new hard drive (WDC WD1200BEVE-11UYT0) and a new memory chip installed I have been having a problem with the screen suddenly dimming, most times dimming to the lowest setting. When this happens the 'sun' screen brightness icon appears and you can see the level brightness indicator bars drop. This happens w/o any regular time interval, sometimes it seems vibration related and sometimes not. After it occurs, I can sometimes bring the brightness level back up and it will hold, other times it falls back down again and repeated attempts to bring it up will not work; if you give it some time to rest, 30 sec. to 2 mins, then it will work. I have no idea what is going on. Is there a setting I need to adjust, is it a glitch and it needs a software patch, is something/a connection loose in the computer? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks

  • Screen dimming

hey, i'm going to hook my macbook to my HDTV via the DVI adapter and then HDMI to the TV. My question is this: My Macbook has a screen dimming function, whether it's plugged into a wall socket or not after a short time of no operation the screen goes dim. Will the screen of my television go dim?
If so, how can I avoid this issue? I'm using Tiger and there seems no way to adjust this setting.

thanks for replying Simon. I have answered my question in a way. I don't know if the television set will dim but I've found out how to stop the dimming on the computer display in Tiger and on Leopard. You are right it's in Energy Saver settings. Uncheck the "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" this is in the options menu in Energy Saver. Then put the sliders on 'Never.'
    Thanks

  • Screen dimming without selecting it to do so!!

Hi, I am a Macbook newbie and am sorting through some teething issues. The latest is that I have selected in my power setting 'custom' this selection has delays of 35 mins for screensaver and 40 mins for screen off. Now my question is this,I have NOT checked the 'dim screen before screen off' selection, but after 5-8 mins the screen dims down. moving the mouse puts it on full again..
I know it should do that on battery but this is on AC and on my own custom setting...
    Any insight?
Also one more question, why does firefox display selection boxes in a crappy square manner whereas Safari (which I cant use as it is incompatible with a lot of websites) has nice little rounded glowing blue boxes?
    weird
    Steve

Well that just makes my macbook crazy then!! I really do not understand the dimming when NOTHING is selected for it to do so.. anyone else have dimming?
Oh and regards to safari, it does not work with yahoo mail, my university peoplesoft network thing, and nearly all of the major companies I have been applying to in the last few weeks (final year at uni!) one even required WINDOWS XP I had to go and use the cluster down the road to do their online test...
Firefox covers most of the problems apart from the last one.
Although it seems to load images quite slowly on our 10mbps lan...

  • Screen dimming delay . . .

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to 4.0.1 (quick and painless unlike the 4.0 release which was 9+ hours) last night and have noticed this morning that the time it takes for the screen to dim (before eventually turning off) after a period of inactivity has dramatically reduced. I can't remember the time that it took before as it was quite a lengthy delay, but now I reckon it's a period of approx 40 seconds before the screen dims. I think it used to be a couple of minutes. Has anyone else noticed this? Also is there any way to alter this timing (just like a MBP or iMac display in the Energy Saver System Pref Pane).
    As always, any advice appreciated.

Neil was correct - auto-lock controls how long before the screen dims, followed shortly after by the phone locking. Passcode lock is a separate function. If you set auto-lock to never your screen won't dim. I suspect it's set to 1 minute at present =0)

  • Screen Dimming still - after unchecking 'ambient brigthness settings

I've turned off the ambient light settings under display, but still the screen dims then turns off, while on AC power.
How do I turn this off so that the brightness stays as is! (And just let the screen saver kick in as set)
    Please help.
    Thanks!
