Screen Dims when moved/left Corner Squeeze

Hi-
Recently, my iBook G3 (600 mHz) screen began to dim and flicker occasionally and sometimes the screen would eventually go totally black.
The iBook works well if it is on a solid table but I can replicate the dimming/flicker issue if I move the iBook around or if I open and shut the screen a few times in a row. However, I can always make the screen dim/flicker when I squeeze the left corner of the computer (left side of keypad).
Is this a logic board problem? Is there a real fix for this issue aside from the shim fix that has been suggested in other posts? Will it be expensive to fix?
Thanks in advance

I had the exact same problem as the poster of this topic with a 500MHz iBook G3, and I can confirm, THE SHIM FIX WORKS. I was experiencing the problem with the flashing backlight, but there would still be a image on the screen, so I knew the display was not gone. I went to my local Walmart and bought a pack of 4mm. Scotch Mounting Squares, and attached one to the raised square on the bottom shield as directed and it worked like a charm. I haven't had a problem since. I highly recommend this method. Here are the iFixit instructions for removing the bottom case:http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/iBook-G3-12-Inch/Lower-Case/50/5/Page-1/Battery
You can read about how to install the shim in one of the replies in this thread:

  • Screen dimming when moving hand over left speaker??

    Hi all
Curious one, I got up early, dragged out the laptop to have a look on web, I turned the brightness down to one notch (F1) I found that if I put my left hand 1 inch above the left speaker (yea that's right not touching anything) and move my hand left and right, then screen goes dimmer then brighter then dimmer and so on?
    Any thoughts... got me stumped?
    MBP 2GB, 1.83 version 10.4.10
    Cheers ears
    Az

Well... I do understand why they did it.
Granted, the sensors should not be in the top case; bad design. I've never triggered the dim while typing, but I do get fluctuations depending on what's on the screen itself whenever I work in a dark room. I'll open a browser, for example, and my whole screen will go from my dark background picture to an empty white browser window. The flood of backlighting is enough to trigger the sensors.
If the sensors were better-placed, this would be a great feature as overly bright screens in a dim room cause eye strain and are an unnecessary battery drain. Too bad the sensors don't give the OS reliable info.
    Ciao for now, Joel

  • Screen dims when watching internet movies

My PBg4 screen becomes dim when watching internet videos or slide shows in iphoto or imovie.
I have to keep moving the mouse to keep the screen well lit.
Is there a way to fix this problem and still have the dim screen dim in all other situations where needed?

    Thank you so much.
I did not want to set the CP to never sleep, because in normal circumstances I want the screen to dim.
This way I can activate the non-sleep feature only when I need to.

  • Screen showing a whitening of the screen on the upper left corner

I have a screen problem with my 1G iPhone (non-3G). I bought it within a week of introduction and in about a year, there was noticeable whitening of the upper left corner. I took it to a Apple store, they replaced it with another phone which has a speaker issue and so they replaced that second with another phone (right about when 3G was released). Now, the new phone is showing similar whitening on the upper left corner. Plus I see two bubbles in the display (about the size of a degree symbol) right in the upper left corner. I don't have Apple care coverage anymore. My wife's iPhone does not show this problem (though hers was also replaced for another reason within a year). We have had good luck with Apple products (7 laptops, 2 iMacs over 6 years or so) but we are leery of upgrading to 3G if there is so much trouble. Is it the first generation issue or folks also see this in the 3G model? Any help is appreciated. (The phone was never dropped and I take good care of it)

I haven't read anything about a recall, so if you have a first generation iPhone that is no longer under warranty and you didn't purchase the AppleCare extended warranty, Apple probably won't do anything for you - at least not for free. Apple doesn't offer a menu of repair services for the iPhone. Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty repair price, which pays for an exchange. You can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.
Or do a Google search with iPhone repair, or iPhone out of warranty repair. Depending on what needs to be repaired or replaced, the cost for 3rd party repair services may not be a whole lot less than Apple's repair price, which pays for an exchange and will include a warranty.

  • External screen dims when opening different apps?

    Hi All ----
Seems my external screen dims and rectifies when opening different apps - like some kind of brightness adjustment going on... it doesnt happen on the MBP, just on the external screen --- i've checked all possible settings on Ext. Displ. / re-booted / repaired perms... cant quite figure it out.
I dont think this is energy-saver related.
Many thnx for any help in adv. ---
    cheers,
    J.

The problem with that is, it's hard to put it back together without assuring that you're not pinching the cable again.
    Instructions can be found here.
As he says, the cable can be found at Small Dog Electronics:
    http://www.smalldog.com/product/43417
If you need replacement feet, they can be found at MicroDoc.
The specific link you need on PowerBook Tech's website can be found here.
If it looks like too much for you to handle, you may want to check out DT & T Computer Services. Perhaps in a metropolitan area like Austin you can check the Yellow Pages and find a technician willing to match the price.
At one point, DominionTech in Colchester, Vermont was offering the repair for $79.90, but I'm not sure if that price is still available.
    Good luck.

  • Why does my iPhone screen dim when I send text messages?

Whenever I'm texting someone and I tap the voice button to use talk to text, the screen dims to black on my 5s, if my face gets close to the phone.
Also, if I put the phone up to my ear or near my face whenever I have text message convo window open, the phone beeps and dims. It starts trying to record a memo or something?
I'm jailbroken and I have never seen this happen before. Any ideas on what is going on?
Would appreciate any help! - bud

We really do not support jail broken devices as it violates the terms of this site. That said the dimming when the phone gets close to your face is a normal function via a proximity sensor to stop inadvertent button triggers

  • Air Screen Dims when watching movies

Hi all! This is a stupid question. I've just purchased a new macbook air 11.6 in and when watching movies (not in ful screen) the screen dims, Im assuming because of inactivity with keyboard, etc. I dont like to watch all movies in full screen, so how do I change the settings to allow for longer 'inactive' times? Meaning, I don't want the screen to dim after only 5 minutes. Thanks!

In System Preferences > Energy Saver > uncheck "Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep"
Also adjust the sleep timer to suit.

  • Screen Creaking when moved..

A few days after getting my macbook, when the computer is jiggled, or the screen is moved, the hinge makes a really annoying creaking sound,, it didnt bother me until today when it was getting extra loud and annoying!
Can i get it fixed, and smooth again?
    xxx

I can't see no reason why they would not fix it for you. Bringing attention to your Macbook in this way is prob. not what you or even Apple wants!

  • Screen dimming when using battery power

I have made sure that "automatically reduce the brightness..." option is UNchecked and yet my screen still dims after ~2 minutes. (and yes, I have made sure that I am making this setting for "Battery").
Anything else that might be causing this?
    Thanks!
    BT

this is a known, common problem of which there is no official solution.
You can try disconnecting and reconnecting your power source
    Resetting your PMU
    Locking the "preferences" under power
Otherwise no fix... It seems to be related to both power settings and the screen saver

  • Please fix choppy screen updates when moving things

In Adobe Illustrator, when I move an object, even a super simple object like a square with 1 fill, the movement struggles to keep up with my mouse. The movement is choppy; it stutters and lags behind my mouse. I just realized how much this behavior really irks me.
I remember Corel DRAW being much smoother. To test I fired up my old PC and launched a five-year-old copy of Corel DRAW.
I drew a box and then I moved it. Woah! Smooth as silk. Why is it the industry standard vector program can even match a forgotten 5-year-old program?
I would really love it if Illustrator can catch up.

Also I used Corel Draw, also FreeHands and each of the 7 years of work in Illustartor this recall.
Illustartora I use because it is in the package CS, but I'm running out of nerves.
    And I remembered this commercial
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3TDmvZma84&feature=relmfu
Somehow I do not feel special that we have the year 2012 computer with 12 cores at 3GHz and graphics card, and 5 million times faster than that of the advertisement.
I sincerely hope that Adobe Version CS6 after the mind has gone to his head and wrote Illustartora finally over and does not add more or less nicer interfaces to the same old facade.
Already starting to seriously look for a new tool. So the expensive adobe sentiments and habits is one thing, the freedom to choose the latter.

  • T400 screen dims when AC attached

I have a T400 ThinkPad  that is 2 months old.  Today the screen went dim.  I was running with the AC Adaptor plugged in.  I removed the AC adaptor and the screen returned to normal brightness.   Any ideas?

I would check your power profile and make sure that the brightness while running on AC is an acceptable level.  Can you turn the brightness up with the brightness hotkeys?

  • Apple logo (reboot screen) appears when iPad left charging

    Hi there,
Recently when I leave my iPad connected to my Mac Mini via the USB sync/charge cable, after a number of hours the "reboot screen" (Apple logo on black background) appears overlaid with the spinning progress wheel icon (see photo below) until I disconnect the iPad from the cable, at which time the regular unlock screen appears and everything behaves normally. I'm using a 3rd-party USB docking stand - could this be the problem?
You can see some photos of this strange behaviour at:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/310720/IMG_0497.jpg
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/310720/IMG_0495.jpg
    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

It seems possible that the docking stand could be the culprit. If you try charging by plugging the supplied power adapter that came with your iPad into a wall socket and your iPad doesn't display that screen, I think that will answer your question.
If you reach a certain lower battery level on the iPad, it is not uncommon for the iPad to reboot - if it has been powered off - when you plug the supplied USB cable into a wall socket in order to recharge. However it will fully reboot and the spinning wheel will not be there.

  • Nano screen displays only bottom left corner

from research on the net it appears this is something that has been happening quite a bit. I found a news release saying the incidence of occurrence of this is .01%! Apple has NOTHING on the support section about it. its still under warranty so I'm sending it to Apple, but I'm being charged 31$ for shipping and handling. I'm glad it will be fixed, I'm a little disappointed in the shipping charge. I guess I should play the lottery today.

  • Screen dimming without selecting it to do so!!

Hi, I am a Macbook newbie and am sorting through some teething issues. The latest is that I have selected in my power setting 'custom' this selection has delays of 35 mins for screensaver and 40 mins for screen off. Now my question is this,I have NOT checked the 'dim screen before screen off' selection, but after 5-8 mins the screen dims down. moving the mouse puts it on full again..
I know it should do that on battery but this is on AC and on my own custom setting...
    Any insight?
Also one more question, why does firefox display selection boxes in a crappy square manner whereas Safari (which I cant use as it is incompatible with a lot of websites) has nice little rounded glowing blue boxes?
    weird
    Steve

Well that just makes my macbook crazy then!! I really do not understand the dimming when NOTHING is selected for it to do so.. anyone else have dimming?
Oh and regards to safari, it does not work with yahoo mail, my university peoplesoft network thing, and nearly all of the major companies I have been applying to in the last few weeks (final year at uni!) one even required WINDOWS XP I had to go and use the cluster down the road to do their online test...
Firefox covers most of the problems apart from the last one.
Although it seems to load images quite slowly on our 10mbps lan...
