Screen flashes black when launching video apps
Hi everyone,
I need some help getting a diagnostic of a problem I have.
I am using: xorg+catalyst+openbox
When I launch a video (with mplayer or vlc for example) or when a guest OS is booted in virtualbox, the screen flashes and becomes black for half a second before coming back again.
So far, this has led to no crashes or anything really unpleasant, but it would be nice to fix it if possible.
Here is my xorg.conf in case it could be useful. http://pastebin.com/m2137bab7
It was generated via hwd and aticonfig
I would appreciate any help you could give me.
Thanks a lot for your time
Vincent
I am not keying out green, but I have the same exact problem. I am also using ProPresenter for most of the service elements (lyrics, video, etc) but I switch to Keynote so I have more creative control of sermon notes. I have the same graphic up in both programs and would like to seamlessly switch between the two. However, the "black flash" is a huge problem and distraction. I've noticed the same thing does not occur in Windows programs I have used in the past (say going from PowerPoint to SongShow Plus).
Is there a fix??!

From time to time screen flashes black when scrolling
Hi all!
My system: Fennec 32.0, Teclast x98 3g, Intel z3735D, Android 4.2.2
From time to time I observe screen flashing black when scrolling any page. I could not find consistent pattern, but maybe it happens when I have 3 or more opened tabs.
Could you help me to solve this issue?
Thanks in advance.Hi IGOR,
There are alot of default features for scrolling in Firefox for android, but they are under the hood of the application in the about:config page.
Does this happen on pages with Flash player embedded in them?
The more current reasons why Flash may not work is if the phone/tablet has a Intel cpu and not a ARMv7 or v6 type of cpu that old Flash 11.1 for Android supports.. And if you have Android 4.1 or newer you need Firefox 27.0 and newer.
However if it is not, please open a bug with the device model and about:buildconfig page information as well as an example website where this happens all the time. Further investigation can be done with that information. :-)

Satellite L405D-11V - Freezes and screen goes black when watching video
Ok, so I have the Toshiba Satellite L405D-11V, I have had a fault, basically, the computer would freeze at any time and the screen would go black, with the fan and lights still going, this could be on start-up, or a few hours into using the laptop, so I decided to ring up Toshiba's tech support and they arranged for my laptop to be collected and sent off for repairs.
I was able to track the repairs online through the tracking service, and was able to see what they were doing to my laptop, it said that they ordered a part, it was in progress and the repairs were finished.
However, I got the laptop back today, I turn it on, everything is fine, I start using the laptop everything is fine, then I decide to watch a video on youtube, and it freezes again, so, I power off holding down the power button, hoping it was just a one off, I turn it back on, and load up the video again, it freezes and the screen goes black again, after working out that when ever I watch a video or play a game, it causes the computer to crash and freeze like before the repairs. So there is still a fault, but im not sure what to do
Its still under warranty, I purchased the laptop from Comet, but I dont really want to send the laptop off for repairs again and to find it will come back with the same fault, is it worth sending it off again, perhaps seeing if comet will replace the laptop as its still under a year of buying the laptop, or is it just gonna be worth saving all the hassle and buying a new laptop? If this fault has happened to anyone else, I could sure use some help, and if someone could shed a little light as to what might be wrong?
ThanksHi buddy,
Did you change something on configuration after you got your notebook back from repair? Did you update a driver or something else?
What operating system you are using on your Satellite L405D?
To be honest its really hard to say why it happens because the technicians test everything to check if your notebook runs properly.
In my opinion you should try updating the display driver. Maybe its causing the issue
If not I would recommend installing Windows from Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings. These settings are pretested by Toshiba and should work.
If you still have the problem you must contact the technicians again. I mean you could track the repair online and according your posting everything worked well during repair so in my opinion it shouldnt be a problem to contact the guys exactly.
Explain your problem very detailed. I think everything can be clarified then. :) -
When texting my screen randomly flashes black and won't respond. Has anyone else experienced this or knows what to do?
Try Reset PRAM.
Some of the display settings are stored in PRAM.

Screen flashes black when quitting and starting up applications
Hi there;
I've done a quick look around the internet and these forums to see if I could find any more on this problem, but no such luck. I've bought a new 15" MacBook Pro in June, it's the 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB of ram. I'm very happy with it, but ever since I got it, the screen has been giving really short black flashes whenever I quit an application or start one. It doesn't happen all the time; maybe once every 10 times I quit or start something, and seems to happen mostly for quitting applications. They seem to be random as well; so it's not always the same applications that give me a black flash when quitting them.
Although obviously a minor problem (it's really a quick flash, so just a few milliseconds probably) I would love to have this fixed. It happens both when it is connected to a power source and when it is not. The only thing I can think of is that when I got this MacBook Pro, I've transferred all my files and settings from my old 13" black MacBook (2008) using Time Machine, so it might have to do with weirdly transferred preferences or something?
I hope someone else knows some more about this. Thanks in advance!I realise I'm replying to myself here, but I thought I'd let anyone watching know that there is a cure for this, although it's not perfect if you run on battery a lot..
If you disable the GPU switching (System Preferences->Energy Saver->Uncheck "Automatic Graphics Switching") then the flickering no longer happens.
It must have been happening whenever an application requested a switch from the Intel GPU to the NVidia GPU (which explains why it seemed to happen more often when starting, quitting or switching applications). Not ideal if you're on battery, like I say, but .. it bugs me that much that I'll live with less battery life! -
My ipod nano 5th gen. won't play movies or tv shows but it plays them on itunes. When I click on it the screen flashes black. I have tried taking the videos off my ipod and then putting them back on but it still won't work. what should i do?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Why does my screen go black when I try to open my videos?
When I try to open my videos, my screen goes black. All other apps work fine.
Quit the Videos app completely, restart the iPad and then try again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button
If that doesn't work, try this.
Swipe to the right from your first home screen to get to the iPad Spotlight search. Type in the name of any of your movies in the field at the top. when the movie appears in the search - tap on it and it should hopefully start to play. Let it play for a minute or so - hit done - go back to videos app and see if all is OK.
And if that doesn't work, You can try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. -
IMac screen flashes black and white when returning to top sites or screen saver
iMac screen flash black and white when returning to top sites or before sleep...any ideas why?
Howdy OatsaMae,
It sounds like your screen is flashing unexpectedly on you for some reason. I would recommend this section from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

My ipad with retina display has been acting up. The screen flashes black in all applications. Then the screen will turn off and I have to hit the power button several times before the screen will turn back on. What is wrong? What should I do?
Hello there, AlysonLB.
The following Knowledge Base article offers some practical troubleshooting steps that are applicable to your iPad:
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
Particularly:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

Screen flashes black while playing games
When I play games. The screen flashes black for a few seconds and then comes back and does it again?
After reading this one sentence problem description it is not easy to say much about your problem.
Maybe you should tell us something about your machine, preinstalled OS, display driver that you use and of course be a bit more detailed about this issue. -
Lost of Sounds when launching an App
Yesterday I noticed that when launching an App such as Crazy Birds or Fragger, or etc. that the sound is now missing. From the desktop I can adjust the sound to the max rating but when an App is launched, the sound is no longer adjustable and the play is on mute. This is happening on two IPads. Anyone else experiencing this? Ipod and Video play work ok.
If you're talking about the "alert" sounds (rather than regular volume such as for music), flip the switch next to the volume controls.

Why does my screen turn black when I play iTunes while working on iPhoto?
Why does my screen turn black when I play ITunes while working on iPhoto? I can't click off of the screen but get a message that reads Shut down computer by pressing button in back then turn computer back on by pushing button in back. That's followed by Chinese letters (which I cannot read). I have had other problems when playing iTunes (actually, a radio station on the Internet) while working on iPhoto. Before, I got a window that would pop up and tell me I had no disk space available, that I would have to quit applications that were open. Not many were open.
It would be nice if I could solve this problem once and for all.
Thanks in advance for all the suggestions. I truly appreciate your help.
JanThat was easy. Thanks. Jan

N95 screen goes black when in between open and clo...
Just noticed today that the screen goes black when sliding open or closed. Screen comes back on when slider reaches open or closed. Is this like the blank screen fault that affected so many N80s ? I'm very disgusted that I have to pay to fix my 16month old (expensive) N95 for an ongoing issue with Nokia sliders that they HAVE NOT fixed in their design. Very poor support Nokia.
