Screen flicker and crashes.

My iMac had never crashed in the year that I have had it up till about a week ago. Now three times, my computer has become unresponsive, with the screen flickering. I have had to hold my power button to use it again.
I have reset the SMC, PRAM and run RAM, Graphics tests and SMART test. All passed brilliantly, the only concerned being a slightly slower spin up time, but nothing serious.
I am running 10.6.6, on Late 2009 21.5inch iMac, 3.06Ghz Dual-Core, 4GB RAM.
Thanks.

One good generic troubleshooting step for this is to run Applejack.

It runs in single user mode. After installing (you won't see it in the Applications Folder) hold CMD-S at startup. You will get a black screen with MS-DOS like text. Just follow the prompts: type in "applejack AUTO" and it will run through the following:
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
You can also run tasks selectively and for specific users by typing in "applejack."
The first reboot will take much longer than usual, as it rebuilds caches. It may take several restarts to see the benefits. Because of the deep cache cleaning in AUTO mode some applications may tell you they are being opened for the first time.
I would also run the Hardware Test in extended. Disconnect all peripherals except the Keyboard and Mouse

On your Mac, you can get to the Hardware Test simply by restarting holding down the D key.

  • How do I get rid of random screen flicker and black screen when using a late 2013 Mac Pro with a 4k Samsung 55" Display?

I have a new Mac Pro late 2013 and a 55" 4k Samsung display connected using an HDMI cable. For the most part the display is amazing, however, I get occasional screen flicker and black outs. Can anyone help? Could I possibly have a bad video card?

4K displays take more than half the bandwidth of a ThunderBolt Bus. So you may get better results if you are careful to place them on their own Bus. This article has the explanation of which port is using which Bus:

  • Screen Flicker + Youtube crash post ICS

    Hi Sony,
Since the ICS update I have been experiencing extreme flickering on almost all screens. It is especially severe when opening the recent apps menu and on you tube app top-nav.
Also, the youtube app crashes as soon as I try to skip a video forward or backward. It just jarrs and then it will not allow you to un-pause, but the video will start playing even when it's paused and then it crashes in a couple of seconds. This happens with almost 100% probability.
In addition to that, I have also experienced crashing in other apps, such as Skype, Netflix, Chrome etc.
These issues (specially the flickering and crashing) make the tablet feel so useless that I have started using my laptop again at home (after enjoying months of laptop free evenings with the tablet!!)
Please do something about these issues. I know people are reporting these as google code bugs on some sites, but this is a Sony tablet. I believe it is Sony's responsibility to make it work. Not all other manufacturers are reporting these issues on their ICS devices.
I look forward to a fix for these issues soon.

  • Screen distortion and crashes

I get a lot of screen distortion, and my iMac completely freezes or crashes.  I get a video ram failure message when I run Techtool.
I've tried reinstalling the system, but it's still happening.
I had the logic board replaced while it was under warrantee, but I'm afraid it may need replacing again (pretty expensive even to do it myself).
    Any thoughts???

  • Gateway DX4840 is Experiencing Screen Freezing and Crashing

I am running Windows 7. This problem started about three weeks ago. Occasionally the screen freezes and nothing will unfreeze it except a cold boot. Control-Alt-Delete does nothing.   Sometimes the screen goes black. At other times the screen shows
an odd multicolour pattern.  Occasionally the computer crashes altogether.
I can not seem to find any hardware problem. Sometimes the computer will run for several days with no difficulty. There is no sign of a virus. I have checked my C drive for problems and found nothing.
I normally run Chrome and sometimes Chrome and Explorer at the same time.  Has anybody experienced this problem.
    Thanks very much.

  • Screen Flicker and Glitch on 24" iMac, Early 2009

For a while now, my iMac has been having somewhat random display glitches, flickers, freezes, and kernel panics that can only be fixed by shutting down the computer.
Most of these screen glitches go like this: The display flickers black quickly, letting me know that an issue is going to arise. The issues that could happen are as follows:
A blue line glitch (very common)
a random artifact glitch (somewhat uncommon)
    a freeze-up (very common)
    a kernel panic
    Let me describe these:
There are several types of "display glitches" I've been experiencing. Some of them involve random artifacts that are randomly displayed and seem to be hovering over whatever is going on on the screen–for example, once I was browsing Facebook and the glitch occurred, so a square of my browser screen was sort of cut out and stuck on the screen above everything else going on. The issue wasn't fixed until I restarted the computer. This glitch, however, wouldn't show up in screenshots. These are somewhat less common because it seems if this one happens then it either gets worse very fast and there are random pieces of my active windows all over the screen or it freezes the computer up entirely, or even results in a kernel panic.
Another "display glitch" that is far more common is a sort of line glitch. It's very strange: blue lines will outline random shapes and things all over the screen. Pictures on my browser appear distorted and videos look VERY weird. The dock has the lines and random blue pixels as well. The desktop background appears distorted. This glitch often starts with the screen flickering black and the various blue lines appearing. The lines change shape as the objects on the screen move around. The issue doesn't appear in screenshots but I documented it by taking crude videos and pictures on my phone that give examples.
Here's a link to my video of a video about a nonrelated screen glitch. I was actually searching Google for a solution but it turned out to be unhelpful, but since the screen glitch happened to be going on I decided to record it as an example. Notice how the blue lines move with the video...
    Here are some pictures:
This next screenshot looks a little creepy with the armored polar bear–it's a LoL build on Mobafire. CLICK HERE TO SEE WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE:
---NOTE: My computer actually JUST screen glitched and froze up completely, at which point I had to shut it down and reboot. Luckily the post was saved! Just in case you were wondering how often these things occur.
This issue is getting worse and worse. I'm not sure what triggers it, but it seems like graphics-intensive programs like 3D games can trigger it–especially, it seems, when I toggle on and off fullscreen. It looks like it could be a graphics card issue, because if it was a software problem it would seem like it should show up in the screenshots. It's sort of an underwhelming graphics card, but meh. My mom is having a panic attack and backing up everything on the computer and we're thinking about just reinstalling OS X altogether.

  • When I move my mac the screen flicker and must be rebooted

when I move my mac the screen flickers and goes blank then must be rebooted. Crap

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
And sorry to report that OSX is more Widows like than ever, but….
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Screen flicker and delay in texmaker (possible problem w\ qt5-webkit)

Long time reader, first time poster. Never needed to post a problem before because of the amazing amount of assistance already offered here.
I have a minor problem (annoying but could live with it), and so far, I can't find anything on it. Moreover, I really don't know what error logs to consult about it or how to go about finding the source of the problem. So, I apologize in advance for the lack of information on the problem, but part of my question is what to look for.
Had a machine that was a bit behind on updates (about a year), went through all the news posts, updated as required, everything went fine, and everything is still working. There are two applications, though, that seem a bit buggy: texmaker and calibre. Whenever I open either up, it takes quite a bit longer than it did prior to the update, and my screen starts to flicker a fair bit. Eventually, both open up and run just fine, but the delay and screen flickering troubles me. I don't use calibre often, but I use texmaker all the time. So, I would like to see if there is anything I can do to sort this out.
I checked the general logs from journalctl and dmesg to see if there were any errors, and there wasn't anything. I also checked the xorg log to see if there were any errors there, and again, nothing. The only dependency the two programs have in common is qt5-webkit, and that was installed with the last update.
Could anyone recommend a way to figure out if that is the source of the problem or find more information about why it is happening?
Thanks in advance, and if I have violated any of the norms of posting, feel free to reprimand me firmly but gently; it is my first time after all.

  • Screen flicker and trackpad issues on macbook pro 8 2

Hi I have a macbook pro (8,2) 15 inch with a high rez anti glare display.  The display stared to flicker after living my computer open in arch for about 30 min.  I tried rebooting and it even started happening in the boot screen and in mac os x.  The last thing I did before it happened was setup pommed in arch and leve my computer open.
Also this has sort of been asked but my question is a little different.  I am trying to set up my multitouch trackpad.  I installed mtrack from the aur but changing the settings does nothing.  What I want to accomplish is this.  1)  I want to right click by clicking (not tapping) with one finger in the button right corner of my trackpad. 2) I need to disable tap to click!!!! 3) I want to be able to click the trackpad with my thump and use my index finger to drag instead of only my thumb.  for example I want to click on a window border with my thumb and move it around with my index finger while holding down my thumb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Glad you figured it out.  Sorry to see no one else chimed in.
I have arch on a macbook as well.  I have never seen a need for the many elaborate packages which claim to make these things work.  If they're working then stick with it - but if you need another option, I've had great luck with simply properly configuring synaptics:

  • HP Pavilion Elite m9065uk - Pink Screen Freeze and crash

    Hi,
Hopefully someone here can help me. I have a HP Pavilion m9065uk Desktop and I am  having problems and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.
Over the last month or so I have been having a problem with it the PC crashing, at first it started when booting up, it would get as far as the Microsoft loading bar then just a black screen and nothing. I would reboot and it would boot up fine, but then started freezing with a pink screen, then after a few minutes either go to black screen or nothing happening at all. Sometimes it starts to restart up then fails to start and startup repair comes up but sometimes fails.  I changed the power supply back in March, but I dont believe if this has anything to do with it, the supply is the same as the original.
I googled the boards and it was suggested that the nvidia graphics card might be the problem. so reinstalled the drivers and then tried updating the drivers and its still the same problem. The reason I say i suspect the graphics card is that sometimes when the problem originally began I would get an error message saying that "display driver failed and recovered".
Is this a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT card? There is no Integrated graphics card on the PC when a graphics card is installed.
The PC will work for a day or 2 then the same pink screen crash occurs, now all of a sudden it wont boot up, keeps going to launch startup repair, which does not work. I can boot up to safe mode only.
Hopefully someone would be able to point me in the right direction. I dont want to have to go changing the motherboard or worse still pay for a new PC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, O

    Hi,
Is this HP PC the same as yours?  It might be the video card or a weak power supply. Try reseating the video card and see if that makes a difference.  Take a can of compress air and blow out all of the dust from CPU heat sink and the fan on the video card.  See if that makes a difference.
You could try removing the video card and connect the monitor using a VGA cable to the integrated video port on the back of your PC. Hopefully your monitor has a VGA port and you have a VGA cable.  The integrated video adapter is Intel so you will have to update the video driver.  Look here for the update.

  • Welcome Screen Hangs and Crashes

The basic issue: Dreamweaver/Flash hangs indefinitely at the
welcome screen after being opened and cannot be used/ must be
forced quit. I can’t click anything and certainly can use the
    program.
    My System:
    Intel Mac Pro
    Two 2.66 Ghz Intel Processors
    2 GB Ram
ATI X1900 Card with 512 MB Memory
    Internet Connection
    Operating System: Mac OSX 10.4.9
    How to produce the problem:
    1. Ensure internet connection is enabled.
    2. Open Dreamweaver
Results: Upon opening, Dreamweaver/Flash hangs indefinitely
at the welcome screen. All menus and tool bars load, but the
welcome screen displays a blank box at which point the cursor
spins, the program freezes and must be forced quit.
Normally the welcome screen should load quickly and display
the various document options as well as a link to adobe. (Assuming
an internet connection is available. If not, a static graphic
should be displayed in the lower right corner.) After extensive
trouble shooting I narrowed the problem down to the internet
connection. Without an internet connection (Ethernet cable
unplugged) the welcome screen loaded promptly and didn’t hang
however the link normally provided in the lower right hand corner
was missing since there was no internet available. The program then
    ran normally.
When the internet was connected, the program would load up to
the welcome screen and then hang without displaying any options. No
menus were available and nothing could be done in the program. The
only solution at this point was to force quit.
I spoke with a tech support agent and worked through the
majority of the steps outlined here (
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=kb401096)
to no avail. As far as I can tell, the issue is caused by the
welcome screen failing to access the internet content necessary to
load. I was able to disable the welcome screen by disconnecting the
internet, opening Dreamweaver/Flash, disabling it via the options,
and then reconnecting the internet. However, this of course
prevents the use of the welcome screen, a feature I find useful.
Notes: The welcome screen for Illustrator and InDesign load
flawlessly and quickly and are not affected by the internet
    connection.
Has anyone else experienced this? Adobe’s tech agent
told me it might be an issue with my internet, but I doubt that is
the case. I have submitted a bug report to adobe, but was curious
if anyone else had found a solution or had any idea why this is
happening. Why can Illustrator and InDesign load the web links and
    not Flash and Dreamweaver.
I know the welcome screen is hardly a “necessary”
feature, but considering the price one pays for this software, it
would be nice if it worked.

It's not a great workaround at all. In fact, I am still
trying to find a better and more feasible solution since we have a
few computers on the home network and connecting directly to the
internet prevents any of those machines from using the web since
    you loose the router.
I called the apple store and they said they use Airport
Extremes and do not have any issues with the welcome pages on their
machines. Unfortunately, I purchased an airport extreme
(haven’t set it up yet) hoping it would work, but it sounds
like you are having the same issue. I agree that adobe should
acknowledge the problem and I too have run into the limited scope
of the tech support. As you said, they provide support based on the
specific applications and don’t seem to address cross suite
issues. I am still waiting on a call from a Level 2 tech who will
hopefully be more helpful and move beyond the basic steps.
    (Trashing pref files etc.)
It's very odd the older router works, but my guess is some of
the newer security features are causing the issue. I placed my
computer in the DMZ, which seemed to work, but the welcome screens
took a good 5-10 seconds to load and the program would hang during
    that time.
Out of curiousity, who is your Internet Provider? I am using
    Verizon FioS.

  • Fall 2013 Macbook Pro Retina screen freezing and crashing

    Hello,
lately, I have been experiencing some screen freezes on my Macbook Pro Retina 15''... The screen just freezes, including the mouse pointer and then it doesn't respond to anything. I just have to restart the machine again. This happens sometimes and not every day, but still a few times a week. I just do normal things on my mac while I get this problem.
Also, just recently almost an hour ago, my screen just turned all white and it said "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key to continue or a wait a couple minutes for it to reboot." This time, I was watching a movie when it happened.
I have also verified the disk in disk utility, but no errors.
What may be causing this issue? Hardware? Software? I also have applecare, but I'm eager to find out what's the problem before I hand it to the apple store.
    Thank you very much!
