Screen flicker. Should I be worried?

I have a 2011 27" iMac. I looked around the forums and seems like, while there are some people with flickering issues, I have a different kind of flicker.
At random times, the screen brightness on my iMac flickers from light-to dark. It's not one of those horizontal bars that only affect part of the screen. the whole screen's brightness flickers.
I have it attached to an uninterruptible power supply and it does this even when I disconnect everything from it (USB devices, etc. like the support representative said I should do). I won't mind this if this won't develop into a more severe problem. I can live with it if it'll just flicker.
So, should I be worried?

thank you.
I bought it online, had the specs customized. They said if they did run diagnostics and would find a problem i'd have to turn the machine in while another one ships in or worse they'd have to repair it themselves and it'd take around 2 weeks. (i live in the philippines and products have to be shipped from china and the postal service is absolute ****) my work depends on this mac and i just can't afford to lose 2 weeks. if this is just nothing i'd be fine with it being an occasional flicker.

My new iPod 5th gen did the same! I think it might be a YouTube and iOS connection glitch

  • Macbook Pro 13 Early 2011 ocasional screen flicker...

I bought a MBP 13 early 2011 i5 new about 2 weeks ago. Over the last week or so I get an occasional screen flicker. I lasts about a second and that is it. I had a MBP 13 2010 for a year before this one and never experienced this problem with that one. I am running Lion and all the software is up to date. I guess I am wondering if anyone else with this model has experienced this, is normal, or should it be something I should be concerned about. Thanks in advance for any answers on this. Also not related to heating either, temp is running the 40's, and just web browsing.

Call Apple Care.   You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.  Otherwise, you have the standard 1 year warranty and 3 years if you purchased Apple Care.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • How can I reproduce my screen flicker so they'll believe me?

The intermittent nature of the annoying screen flicker on my Macbook makes it difficult to show a tech that it is a real problem and not some figment of my imagination. Does anybody know of a "sure fire" way of reproducing it? I have been able to recreate the rapid dimming and brightening of my Macbook screen by moving the brightness indicator all the way to the left and then bumping it up one click. This only works sometimes and it only works when I do it by clicking and dragging on the ball on the display screen in system prefs. It doesn't work by using f1 and f2. I made a video of my screen while it was flickering and put the video on the desktop. I'm sending it in as soon as my box arrives on Tuesday. They're also replacing my stained top case. I hope they will look at the video and at least test the inverter and cable to see if they're the problem. Any help with how to encourage them would be greatly appreciated.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am the victim of this problem also. The screen flickering & brightness of the screen suddenly fade to low intensity. The screen flickering happened everytime I use my MacBook.
May MacBook was the initial Jun 2006 version.
I already get those problems (a) sudden shutdown (replace the logic board), (b) palm rest area discoloration (change the bottom case), (c) power adaptor pin contact problem (replace the new one), (d) poor performance of battery life (awaiting confirmation from local Apple support, 180cycle max. charge only 50% of initial capacity) & (e) screen flicker issue (today just send in my MacBook for them to do diagnostic).
I really lost confident with my MacBook.
Should I request a replacement of entire MacBook?
My warranty period will be expired mid of next month & the are asking me to purchase the apple protection plan. But, I claim that the unit is poor in initial build quality & why I should considered the plan. It is unfair to me.
If the MacBook is in good condition then I will consider the plan for support another 2 years (fair), not in this reverse way.
Anybody please guide me how to pursue this matter.
I previously own an iBook G4 & PowerBook G4 TI don't have these problem at all.

  • Screen flicker on Macbook

'm on a Macbook (Intel Core Duo 2gHz Processor, 1Gig of Ram, 10 gigs of space left on an 80Gig drive).
The issue is that, at seemingly random times, my screen will flicker, as if the power management was trying to dim the screen during a period of inactivity period.
I called Apple support and they told me to:
    1) Disconnect the power
    2) Remove the battery,
    3) Hold down the power button for 5 seconds
    4) Reconnect the power and the battery
    5) Power up, and when the system started to boot, hold down ALt-Option-P-R until the second boot cycle.
At first, it seemed to work. The screen flicker stopped. However, now when I boot, I get a grey screen of multi-colored vertical lines, and I need to Alt-Opt-P-R each time to get into the OS.
And, as of yesterday, the screen flicker is back.
I have no ambient light detector like the Macbook Pro, so I know that's not it. I've not seen any other reference to this on the web, so I'm stumped.
Thanks for any insight you might have.

I've experimented a bit, and I've found that the screen usually starts to flicker when the computer is under high load, such as playing a few YouTube videos, or playing a game.
When it started flickering for me, I was running on battery power. My first theory was that the battery could possibly not be supplying enough power to keep everything going (even though it was > 50% charge), but then one day I started getting the flicker while I was plugged into the power adapter. I could still be that the MacBook's hardware is requiring more power than it is getting, but if that were the case, more people would be having this issue.
The flickering doesn't really annoy me that much, as it only lasts for about a minute or two at the most, and it seems to come around once a day or so. It does worry me though, the way in which it flickers doesn't seem good -at all-, and I'm afraid that one day the screen will flicker and it'll get stuck like that, or even not turn on properly again. With my luck it'll be the day the warranty runs out.
As of right now I can't afford to part with my laptop either, as I also have school.
Hopefully someone finds a software fix, or Apple figures out the exact cause of the problem so it can be sent in for a quick hardware fix.

  • Why does my screen flicker every 10-15 seconds?

Why does my screen flicker every 10-15 seconds?

like a blinking? do you have the late 08 MBP?
if so go to system, energy saver, and select better performance. Your screen should be flicker free.

  • MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightne

MacBookPro5,1 LED screen flicker on either graphics card on lowest brightness setting. Definitely noticeable and annoying when using the lowest power settings to extend battery life during school usage. Has been happening since I got the machine.
Also new out of the box the screen isn't aligned properly with the base of the unit. Like it got knocked around during manufacture, anyone have this issue?
Also my serial number does not show up in Apple's systems as a sold machine even though I have a proof of purchase. I called 800 APL CARE to resolve the issue, they were looking into it and haven't gotten back to me either, this was weeks ago....
Anyone think I should buy APP?

Your underpowered system may get by if you edit SD DV material, but is way out of its league when editing AVCHD or Red or DSLR material.
Without further info to go on, you have the following problems:
    Not enough memory
    No dedicated nVidia video card
    Insufficient PSU
    No hard disks
About the only thing good about your system is the CPU, but there it ends. Everything else needs to be improved. How much depends on your source material, your workflow, your destination format and all those data were severely missing.

  • I-Mac 24" Screen Flicker

I have a 24" 2007 imac that is out of apple care.
When the screen is not on full brightness and the CPU has been fully loaded (i.e. processing RAW files) I get screen flicker and the only way to clear this is to turn the screen up to full brightness. I have tried using Shades but this does not help.
Has anyone got any ideas, is my screen on the way out?

Ausha, I can't answer all of your question but I do have some suggestions/recommendations for a few.
    4. How good are the blacks ?
The blacks are very black, very rich due to the glossy screen. The look better on mu iMac display than the Samsung display I have.
    5. How can one adjust the height of the screen
Screen Heigh is fixed. You can always use a ream of paper or two, that is what I do.
    6. What color calibration software would be the ideal
I use Spyder2 Pro and it does a fair job on the calibration. The problem is that with the glass over the CD the "spyder" doesn't get the best reading off of the display. I would imagine that Pantones "Huey" calibration would have this same issue. Either one of these programs are rated very high though.
    7. How is the effect of glossy screen on the eye. Is it a huge strain?
If you have a very bright room the glare can be bothersome. If the room is overhead fluorescents or indirect lighting it should be ok. I've only run into a couple of instances where it really bothered me. Most of the time I don't even notice it.
    8. Capture one pro vs Apples own aperture for raw editing is it worth spending extra £219 ???
I use Adobe Lightroom and love it. The cost is about the same as Aperature. I did quite a bit of research and comparrisons between Aperature and Lightroom before buying one and like the features and useability of Lightroom better. Plus it integrates seamlessly with Photoshop CS3.

  • 27" Screen Flicker

I just got my new 27" i5 today. I am coming from a PC so I had it on all day watching the online videos and tutorials. The computer was flawless all day. I love it buy the way
This evening the family turned on the TV so I plugged in my headphones into the jack in the back and started back looking at the tutorials. Shortly after I started to get the dreaded screen flickers. I thought I was seeing things because the computer had been so great. Then it started to go to black and then back on. When I came to some tutorials with no video, I unplugged my headphones to just read the screens and then the screen immediately went black and came back on.
Long story short.....I unplugged the headphones and rebooted the computer. It has been flawless since. Could it really be that simple? The flickers have something to do with the headphone jack? Has anyone else noticed this connection too?? Or should I try to replace my computer? These are old crappy headphones to boot - I will gladly buy new headphones no problem. I hate to replace the computer.
I have already checked the notice on the graphics card firmware update - and it is already installed on my computer. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

I am experiencing similar issues with my new 27" i5. I have not seen the screen go black yet, but there are obvious flickers from time to time. I only notice the problem during/after watching videos (and yes, I have the headphones plugged in). The videos are from Netflix, so I am using the Mac version of Silverlight.
This iMac was purchased because the graphics chip on my 15" MBP started acting up a couple weeks ago and then finally failed completely. Interestingly, I was also watching videos on Netflix with that system when the problems began.
When I first got this iMac the Apple Software Updates downloaded and installed the graphics firmware update. I had hoped that would eleminate the possibility of screen flicker, but it seems that was wishful thinking.
I am going to call Apple tomorrow and see what they say. Based on what I'm reading here I'm not too happy right now. It sounds like this problem is relatively widespread.

  • T30 screen flicker

My T30 screen starts to flicker after 5-10 minutes of operation. The screen does not fade to black, it just dims a little, but does it very fast. This flickers come in syncronous with CPU of disk activity, so it seems to me that is may be some kind of power problem. It does not matter if it runs on battery of on charger, with or without battery installed.
Can this be solved without changing some major part of the machine? If not, then can you tell me which part of the system is malfunctioning?
    Thanks

I have a new MacBook Pro 15 inch that I bought the first day they were available. I too have noticed screen flicker. It only occurs on the left side of the screen and is only noticeable at somewhat reduced brightness. I'm trying to decide whether to take it back to Apple for repair or replacement, or whether it should be considered within the working parameters of the screen, as it's not apparent at "normal" brightness, i.e., the brightness most people probably use most of the time. Has anyone consulted Apple about this and got a response?

  • Perpetual Screen Flicker

I posted a question back in June about my monitors flickering on and off at sporadic intervals. I'm reposting, hoping a fresh set of eyes will see the question and help me out. Thank you.
Without warning, my monitors will take turns turning blue, then black, then coming back on again in a cycle that repeats for as long as 15 minutes. On the black screen, I get a small message that reads "no signal." Just before the monitors 'die' I lose control of my cursor. Any suggestions? Does the info below help? Thanks!

  • My imac feels really hot, but works fine.  Should I be worried?

My imac feels really hot, but works fine.  Should I be worried??  My son plays a Star Wars game on line that seems to make it become really hot.  He says it skips during the game, so he gets out of the game.  When I check the computer, everything is fine.  Thanks!!

    alb,
What you are experiencing is fairly commom.  When our grandkids play games on our Mac, that's when things do get pretty warm, especially in the upper left hand corner where the CPU is.  The imac does rely heavily on "heat sink" technology instead of high speed, noisy fans to keep things running properly.  That being said, be sure to keep the vents that are located on the top back section of the computer screen, clean.  This will allow for proper venting. If your son plays computer games long and often, you can keep a small external fan running in back of the Mac. This may be appropriate in the hot Summer,  in a non air conditioned environment.
