  • Screen flickers on briefly but usually stays dark - hardware or software issue?

screen flickers on briefly when touched but otherwise stays dark.
Still plays music but more or less at random - perhaps since one can't see what one is touching. Volume control works.
Very occasionally works normally for a few seconds
    battery well-charged
    latest versions of all software
I've tried re-setting and restoring -  neither made any difference - and looking for answers in this forum.
Out of warranty. Apple will replace it for £62 but not sure whether its worth anything really.
does this indicate a hardware problem (i.e. screen tapped hard one too many times) or is it conceivable that it may be a software issue? I am fairly brutal with ending the Apple-related processes on my pc - when my ipod is not connected -  since they gobble memory, though they sprout back annoyingly.
    many thanks for any answers.

    Hello egremont russet,
If you have tried resetting and restoring then your iPod has a hardware issue.
Apple does have a battery replacement program that can get you 10% off the cost of a new one if you take into an Apple Retail store.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • My screen flickers in Safari MacBook Pro Retina 2012

My screen flickers in a totally random fashion and only in Safari when I am on the internet. It happens more or less on certain web pages and not very often, but it is very annoying when it does happen. My machine is a Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2012 release. I have seen other posts on this issue dating back to 2012, however, there were not solutions submitted leaving me to believe that there is no solution or I may have missed it. People with the same problem say they have taken in their laptops to have them replaced by Apple only to find out their problem still exists, leading many to believe it's likely to be a software issue. Anyone have any ideas or answers to this issue?

    Hey dhaynes3818,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with Safari on your MacBook Pro. To troubleshoot these issues, lets follow the steps in this article:

  • Screen Flickers in CS5

This issue was discussed in a post from 2010, and although it seemed to be answered, My issue is identical and the solutions provided have not corrected the problem.
Below was the original posting from back then.  My situation is identical save for running Windows 7 as opposed to Vista, and my video card is an
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670.
"I have just upgraded from MX to CS5 and notice that whenever I type text onto my pages in Dreamweaver there is a slight jump in the screen at each keystroke. This also occurs when I move the mouse over the border of a table.  It is extremely annoying to have the screen flickering away like this when working - can anyone tell me what the problem might be?  I have a Windows Vista - PC set up........"
The solutions offered were to delete the General Preferences directory under Local Machine>Software>Adobe>Dreamweaver CS5 with regedit and/or remove the checkmarks from all the visual aids from the view menu and/or upgrade the driver for the video card.
I did all of those and the problem continues.  Passing the mouse over table edges or across image placeholders or typing text causes the screen to flash.
If there are any additional solutions that have been advanced since that posting, I'd appreciate heasring about them.  Thank you.

  • Lumia 1320 screen flickers.

I have a Lumia 1320 and I've noticed a slight flicker on the screen. The flicker occurs only when the screen's brightness is low, no matter what I'm doing on the phone. It flickers even on glance screen. After some research online, I found that other people have this problem aswell. Is this software or hardware related? Is my device faulty?
I found a video demonstrating the same issue but on another device. The flicker is the exact same on my L 1320.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slwkFhpiYbs
You can see the flicker clearly at 0:15 sec. It is more noticeable off camera.
After some research online, I found that its not an issue only on 1320 but on other devices aswell.  Cmon Nokia, this phone has been on market for over a year. Issues like this should be fixed already. What should I do? Should I go on Nokia Care Center and ask for a new device? Screen replacement?
    http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Lumia-625-Screen-flickering/td-p/2208981
    http://forums.wpcentral.com/ask-question/297654-display-backlight-flickers-when-brightness-setto-aut...
    http://forums.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-625/247981-screen-flickering-auto-brightness.html

The thing is though that from what I've read online other people have this issue aswell. Which means that I don't have a faulty device. Which leads to the conclusion that it's either software related or a general hardware issue of all (or at least a batch) of L1320. Either way, this device has been on the market for over a year. Shouldn't this issue have already been addressed?
I've read on another forum that a fellow owner of a L1320 with the same issue changed his screen twice on Nokia Care Center, and the device still had the issue.
PS: Nokia Support replied to me this morning on the e-mail that I've sent them regarding this issue. You won't believe what they told me in response: "Set the display brightness to high to stop having this issue". Unbelievable.

  • 2012 iMac Screen flickering

I just bought a brand new, but previous generation 27" iMac a couple of weeks ago, and today I have begun experiencing some noticeable screen flickering.  It doesn't go black, and there is no yellowing.  I have read reports of past iMac flickering problems from 2010, etc, but haven't found much info on those bought in 2012.
Aside from hauling the computer in for service, has there ever been a fix for this?  I have done all software updates that are available.  Worst case, I'll take it in, but I'm checking here first.
    Thanks for any help.
    2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
    4GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6770M  512 MB

I had screen-flicker and color-distortion issues on my mid-2011 27" iMac about two weeks back. The issue ended up being a bad video card (AMD Radeon HD 6790M 1 GB).

  • Screen Flickering - 15-4000ee HP Spectre Touchsmart

    Hi,
The screen on my HP Spectre Touchsmart 15-4000ee has started to flicker - it comes and goes, but affects the whole screen and lasts for 5 to 10 seconds then disappears.
According to HP Support Assistant, my current video adaptor is Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (resolution 1920 x 1080; refresh rate 60), Version: 10.18.10.3621 (16/05/14).
Can you please advise what might be the problem.  I found another driver on the HP website, however it is an older version than the one I currently have.
    Thank you

    Hi @CameronAll
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I saw your post regarding the screen flickering. Start by connecting your notebook to an external monitor. This way we can see if it is a hardware problem with the screen or a driver/software issue.
You can also try testing your notebook for a hardware problem. This HP document Testing for Hardware Failures will show you how to use the UEFI tools to test the hardware. Run the System Test – Extensive Test.

  • Screen flickering in KDE 4.2 after pacman -Syu

    Hi there,
yesterday I did a "pacman -Syu" and since then my screen keeps flickering every now and then when I move my mouse over the screen or when a new dialog pops up. Sometimes it even flickers when the plasma widget RSSNow slides in new articles.
I can't really nail it, but it seems to be worse if there are many plasma widgets and / or windows open.
It seems to be especially bad when one of my two plasma panels is set to "auto hide".
I've tried to play with the advanced Desktop Effect settings like OpenGl mode, texture filter, VSync and such, but nothing improved. Before the system update my NVidia card was happily playing with KWin.
Has anybody had similar experiences over the last couple of days?

I'm still having problems with my screen flickering, jittering and causing me headaches.
Just to make sure it's not the Nvidia driver, I'm testing the open source driver right now instead of the official, proprietary Nvidia one, although it doesn't support any 3D.
I also have the suspicion that cpufrequtils might be the guilty bit. Has anybody had any graphic related problems when running cpufrequtils with the ondemand governor?
Does that make any sense? Could it be the cause of my graphic problems?

I hope you are still here Grommit.
The reason why the new Creative Software Suite will not install is because the firmware you have is not the version the suite is looking for.
If you want to install the new Suite, you will have to update to the PlaysForSure firmware (2.0.03, I believe). However, if you do this, be aware that you will also have to download and install the latest Zen Driver, Creative MediaSource, and Zen Plugin for the MediaSource (all available in the download section) - also, once you start the firmware update on the Zen Xtra, you WILL NOT be able to revert back to a previous version of the firmware, and the drivers and programs on the install CD will not function with the new player at all.
Unless you use a subscription service with DRM mp3s, or have had issues with Playback Errors in certain mp3s, there is very little immediate need to upgrade.

  • Iphone 5 screen Flickers some time while entering app store password

    Hi
My Iphone 5 screen Flickers some time while entering app store password, not sure if it is BUG of Iphone 5 or I OS6 . Do I need to exchange my device?

It happened to me as well. Once in App Store and once in Flight+ app. It happens where the keys QWERTY is on the keypad. I assume it is a software bug in the OS. However, I don't eliminate the possibility of a hardware issue with my device since I dropped it on a hard carpet floor from waist height. No appearance damage but not sure about any internal damages. I will update this thread when I get more updates

  • MacOS X 10.7.5 screen flickers in black and freezes for 2 minutes

Recently noticed a problem - in Finder, column view (this is important) if I select a pdf file (noticed only for pdf) screen flickers quickly several times in black color and the whole system freezes (except mouse cursor) for 2 minutes (I've measured with timer). After that, everything goes normally, file preview is displayed on the right side in Finder window as it is expected to be and file can be normally opened with Preview app.
Can anyone suggest on this? Where should I start looking to for more information (any logs)?
I have MBP late 2008 aluminium unibody with 4GB RAM, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo.
