Screen flickers, occasionally goes black

Hello all,
iBook g4 bought refurb - 2-3 years ago...
Occasionally the screen is flickering and I have had two occasions where the screen just went black but I could still see the desktop. Had to force restart. I have had 2 times where it was looking for the startup folder after restart as well.
Looks like it might be time for a new laptop??? I have had no other problems.
Haven't noticed the fan running a lot even with several big programs open either.
Searched flicker on this forum and didn't get much.
thanks,
Al

Tried to delete this post since it is doubled but no luck.

Richard, I don't think it freezes when it GOES BLACK. I have had freezes at other times but when it goes black I can see my cursor move - fairly certain.
One difference is that my fan doesn't run alot - in fact I can't remember the last time it ran- if it isn't running at all then that should be a big clue.
have not tried external display....
my projector is broken...
can I use my iMac as external display.
I have the mini vga that came with the ibook.
will check that other thread.
thanks,
Al

  • Why is my 2007 HP V17 monitor screen flickering and going black?

I have an old  2007 HP V17 monitor attached with a VGA cable to an early 2008 Macbook running on OS 10.6.8 software  via a  DVI- mini connector (this is also my desktop computer).
About 6 months ago, the HP display started going white and sometimes gray for a few seconds before the image would return, and a couple of times I had to unplug it and restart the Macbook before it came back.  I followed Apple's instructions for testing whether the problem was in the computer  (= resetting the system by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC), but the computer tested okay.  I then purchased a new VGA cable and DVI-mini connector, but the problem persisted.
Today the HP screen suddenly went black (first time going black) and stayed black.   The power button stayed lit and if I pressed the Volume or Auto buttons, the "Volume" etc. message boxes did appear, so the device's backlight is apparently working and not burnt out (unless the backlight has nothing to do with the message boxes showing up, which for all I know may be the case).  However, the Desktop showed up only on the Macbook.
I checked all the connections, removed the DVI connector and plugged it back into the Macbook several times, but the HP screen stayed black, so I removed the DVI connector in order to type this message on the Macbook.  Then, as I was writing this, I decided to plug it back into the Macbook one more time--and sure enough, the display is back!
I love this monitor, which is the perfect size and ergonomic height for my setup, so I'd hate to have to replace it.  Can anyone tell me
Given the information above, what's the probable reason for the flickering and going to black?  If it's the computer, what could it be?  Can I solve this problem myself? (See above; I couldn't find any other ways to test the computer in the Apple articles database.)
If not, could a monitor this old  be repaired?
If so, how much would repairing it cost, since buying a new monitor that I probably wouldn't like as much would cost upwards of $300?
Thanks so much for any advice out there!

I understand that your HP V17 Monitor has gone black and is not displaying anything. I am providing you with some steps for you to try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the issue persists after this you can try the monitor on another computer to see if it continues. If it does it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options.

  • Screen flickers then goes black

Hello. Having a problem with the display on our 15" 1.25 G-4. After using it awhile, the screen starts looking like a strobe light then goes to all black. Closing the lid, letting it sleep for a bit waking later will then get it working. I've reset the PMMU, but haven't run the hardware checks because the disks are gone.
    Any thoughts? Hardware? Driver?
    Thanks

I suspect that it could be the inverter board which controls the backlight. I just had mine replaced after similar symptoms.

  • SCREEN OCCASIONALLY GOES BLACK

Hi: I have a Mini Intel, 512MB Ram. I use Safari and MS Word. Today, after having the Mini for about 9 months, the screen occasionally goes black, and stays that way for about 5-10 seconds. It occurs every so often, like about once every 10 minutes. I have repaired permissions, ran Yasu, checked the settings on Energy Saver, where I have the computer on all the time; the display is scheduled to go to sleep when the computer is not being used for 17 minutes; these are locked. I haven't had this problem before. I'd appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions as to what might be wrong and how to fix it. Thanks, Jerry.

Thanks so much for your replies. I haven't changed the monitor from its original settings; made sure the cables are in firmly; I use cables for all my peripherals. I checked the Console and I may have had a Kernel Panic (I don't know, but it said something about Kernels when the screen went black). Moving the mouse didn't hurry up its return to normal. So, I again ran Yasu. I've been on the computer now for about 20 minutes and so far it's been working fine. I'm very grateful for your quick replies and for your advice. Hopefully, it's fixed now. Best wishes, Jerry.

  • Screen flickering then goes dark.. :(

When I open my laptop, the screen flickers for less than a second and then goes dark. If I open and close it quite a few times, occasionally the screen will work, for hours at a time. If you shine a flashlight on it, you can see the dim desktop, so I know the computer is running. It is a mid 2010 macbook pro.
I have tried rebooting and resetting the laptop.., but the problem is persistent and its been weeks since i am facing it..
Have already had my logicboard replaced few months back... and now this....
Please help me.... as it is no longer under APP , i am worried how much its gonna be charged..
For a fault that i have read is very common with many people who bought their laptop during this year....
Any suggestion or ay kind of help will be great..

  • My screen keeps on going black.

My iphone 4 screen keeps on going black but im able to screenshot, so i know it on. So i have to keep on rebooting my phone nearly everyday, does anyone know what's wrong with my phone?

    Hi Megan,
For issues with your iPhone display going black, I would suggest starting with the steps in this article -
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Specifically under Display has no backlight or dark screen -
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • HT1688 My iphone 5 screen is flickering then going black and becoming unresponsive.

I just bought this phone, it is up to date on software AND it has had a waterproof lifeproof case on it since day one. When the battery is low the screen flickers uncontrollably and fades to black or white, there are a bunch of sideways lines on it. This phone has NOT been dropped or gotten wet.

    Was this phone ever jalbroken?
If restoring as new, without using a backup, didn't help, there is certainly a hardware problem that only replacement can fix.  Your warranty is void unless you return to the USA.  Short of that, finding a local independent iPhone repair center would be your only option

  • Screen turned off (goes black) during phone call and won't wake up

During a phone call, if the screen goes black (I presume due to the proximity sensor), the phone will sometimes not wake up - even with the home button - and not allow me to access the touch screen.  It's frustrating if I receive another call (call waiting) or if I have an option to press.
My first iPhone 6 required a hard reset (home plus power) to take it out of this mode.  The replacement phone I received from the Apple store will wake up with the home button after the call terminates, but not during the call.  This is not a situation where the lighting in the room is too dark for the screen to wake up.  The event will happen during the day in a room lit by sunlight.
It also seems that the situation happens when I call a phone and go to voice mail or have a number option to press (1, for sales, 2 for tech support, etc) - but perhaps that is the only time I notice the issue as that is when it would be meaningful for me to access the screen.
In case it matters, I have a black 64GB iPhone 6 for use on the Verizon network.  I have also upgraded to 8.02.
Any help would be appreciated as I find it hard to believe that this is a hardware issue that has occurred on two phones.

    Hi natgeoff,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I can imagine it would be frustrating to have multiple devices with the same proximity issue, where the screen remains black while on a call. Take a look at the article linked below and try the suggestions provided, like testing the iPhone without a protective case.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
After finishing a call the display remains black
If the iPhone is in a protective case, remove it from the case.
If there is a protective or antiglare film on the display, remove the film.
Clean the screen, especially around the receiver, with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    I hope this helps,
    -Jason

  • My screen flickers/fades to black

Screen flickers, sometimes fades to black screen completely, have to hold down power/home button at same time for a few seconds until Apple icon shows back up and sometime it doesn't. Any solutions to this??

First I would buy the correct charger from your local Apple Store or Apple reseller. If that doesn't solve the problem and if the machine is covered by warranty or AppleCare (yes Apple warranties are transferable) make an appointment at your local Apple Store and take it in.
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • My ipad 2 does turn on but every time i try to turn it on the screen flickers then goes blue then turns back off

well I need help its not even working its freezing cold

I'm not sure why the device is like that, but if your iPad is freezing cold, don't try to do anything with it until it warms up to room temperature. Once it warms up, if you still see the blue screen and it goes back to black when you try to start it up, try this.
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

  • Screen flickered, then went black (faint windows can still be seen)

i was just working on my powerbook and my screen flickered on and off and turned black. the best way to describe this is like what a lightbulb does right before it blows out. what is wrong?! i am trying to type this as fast as i can before it starts doing it again. is my LCD frying?

Might be bad Power Management Unit settings - following instructions to reset PMU.
Otherwise, there are 3 likely hardware related causes:
    1. Failing LCD Display backlight - needs replacement
    2. Broken/Intermittent ribbon connection - needs soldering and/or replacement
    3. Failing LCD backlight Inverter - needs soldering and/or repalcement
For all 3 of these screen would require service for technician....call Apple if you have warranty.

  • MSI Lightning 7970 3 Screen setup, 1 goes black (no signal)

    Hello!
I'm having some troubles with my msi 7970 lightining card.
The first problem appeared 2 months ago where one of my screens went black all of a sudden(no signal was showing on the screen).
At this time i had all monitors connected to my XFX minidp to dvi (active). After alot of testing i figured out that one of the adapters was the problem.
This specific adapter was tested on all of my monitors and the problem of a screen going black was changing monitor. Remember the problem wasnt a blank screen all the time but after maybe 10-15 minutes in windows. Sometimes it went blank directly and not even a reboot would solve the problem.
So the setup i had working after this troubleshooting was that i was runing 2 minidp to dvi and one in the regular dvi. This worked fine up untill this morning.
I also have to say that during this time i did some overclocking with msi afteburner however i always did a stability test with kombustor to see that the card was stable. Now the overclock i had was only 30 mhz over stock (1070) so i would be VERY surpriced that if this would be the reason for why the gfx card is acting wierd again.
However since i got this problem again i did reset on the gfx to ensure that this wasnt the problem.
The problem still resided so started the regular troubleshooting with the minidps and i pretty much did what i had done before.
The conclusion was that one of the adapters that i had left had become faulty.. But however what are the odds that 2 adapters goes bad within 2 months?
So now im sitting here at work writing this post since i am at an end to what i should do and i would like to ask for some advice from you guys

That, Sir, I am not entirely sure of. I cannot answer this to be honest since i never figured that one of the ports would be the problem.
About the ground line im not really sure what you mean, cant say that i am an electrician :P
my first thinking about your problem is it may be from one of the mini dp ports or from one of the monitor. so if you had know about it we might have been solved the issue.
from the ground i mean is your electric line grounded. if had see some situations where electric drains from graphics cards ports when the line is not grounded.

  • Ever since I upgraded to Lion my screen occasionally goes black in the middle of use and I cannot get the OS to respond to with the on-board keyboard/trackpad or external keyboard/trackpad. What's going on and how do I fix it?

That I can recall it has happend 5 times now. Always when it's in active use never when it's sitting idle. Twice it's happened in Safari when opening new tabs using Splat+T; twice it's happened in iTunes, both times while browsing the store navigating with my external trackpad; and once in Skype when doubletapping on a contact using my external trackpad. This is getting really frustrating as the only recouse I've found is to power cycle the MBP. I never had a problem when using Snow Leopard.
    Thanks,
    Caleb

I saw that and almost replied, but I wasn't sure if it was the same problem because you referenced it happening when the "screen times out" and for me it was only when it was being activly used. Glad to hear I'm not the only one seeing this issue.
