Screen flickers off - Edge13 intel, ubuntu

I have an edge 13 w/ intel chip running dual boot of windows 7 and ubuntu [just upgraded to 10.10, but was having this problem for a few weeks while still using 10.04].  I rarely use windows, and the problem I'm having happens in Ubuntu.
The problem is that periodically, and seemingly randomly, the screen will start to flicker, and I can hear a slight buzzing noise as if there were a bad electrical connection, and then the screen goes completely dark.  Everything is still running, and in fact if I close the lid and let it go to sleep and then reopen the lid the screen is working again.  I think that the first time that this started happening, I had just plugged the power cord back in [while the laptop is running], however now it can happen even if I've had the cord plugged in the whole time that the laptop has been powered-up.
Any ideas what is causing this problem or how to diagnose?
Thanks
Andre

  • Toshiba 32AV615DB screen flickers off for a split sec every few sec

    Hello,
I got my toshiba television around the end of 2009 and havent had any problems until recently.
Whilst watching my virgin + box and whilst on the gaming console, the screen flickers off for a split second every few seconds.
At first I thought it was me blinking it happens that fast until somebody else noticed it as well.
This does not happen whilst using the tele for a monitor for my PC.
Does anybody know what the problem is and if I am able to fix it or not?
I purchased the tele from RicherSOunds with a 5 year garuntee so if it is anything bad I can take it back and they will fix it or give me a new one free of charge.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi
If the warranty is still valid, I would recommend you to contact the technician (service point) in your country in order to check the TV.
Everything what you can do is to check some settings and cable connection but thats it.
TV troubleshooting is limited and in most cases such issues need an check from experts.

My new iPhone 4S that I have had a for about a week keeps over heating a lot and its turned itself off once and I couldn't turn it on for over half an hour, also my screen flickers from time to time and I'm not sure what to do as I not had an iPhone before can anybody help me please I would be very greatful.

    No, it's not normal.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).
Frankly though, considering it's new, take it back to Apple.

  • IMac Intel Core 2 Duo Screen Turning Off

Hello! I have a 17" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2ghz Model # 5,1 and the problem is after turning the machine on, and getting logged in, the screen turns off while the backlight is still on forcing me too shut it down via holding the power button down. I cant plug in an external display because that causes the screen to turn off. Im thinking its the logic board (more specifically the video card) that needs to be replaced. Does anybody know what I can do to fix this? Besides buying a new logic board? Maybe its because its running Snow Leopard and cant handle the OSX?

    A good chance, but...
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Screen flickers on and off

    Please help!
My iBook screen flickers on and off every couple of minutes - it looks like it's just shutting off. Once it flickered off, flicked back on and the whole screen was red for a sec, and then switched back on normally.
Does this mean I'm going to need a new computer?

    Maybe.
There is some kind of inverter board and video circuit which
may be going bad; and maybe the cost of this (or whatever
is wrong with it) could be a fair start toward the cost of a
new or newer computer. There should be an Apple Hardware
Test on a bootable disc, included with the computer.
You know, you get a fairly recent OS X version with the
purchase of an Apple Certified refurbished machine from
the Apple Store online; and it qualifies for the extended
AppleCare optional coverage, past the one year service
and 90 days support (enrolled, it adds total of three years.)
How old is your iBook computer and could it have any
AppleCare plan coverage left? There is a serial number
check box in part of the Apple Support section online.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series + open source driver = screen flickers

Hello, this is my first post here. I just finished setting up my first arch installation on my laptop and I'm using Xorg + gnome 3 as user interface.
My laptop has two VGA cards, an integrated intel VGA card and a Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series, so I used vgaswitcheroo to switch to the Mobility Radeon and turned off the intel VGA card.
Now, here's the problem: I want 3d acceleration to play games and such, but the opensource radeon driver is being weird.
Basically, if I use my Mobility Radeon and the opensource driver the lower-center part of the screen flickers when i move windows vertically. It flickers to black in a polygon-like area and the window shadows get all messed up. If i try to start a game that uses 3d acceleration (such as nexuiz) it runs extremely slow (way too slow for this VGA card) and flickers like crazy in the same area and sometimes on the entire screen.
I already tried using the proprietary driver (catalyst) but it doesn't seem to support switchable VGA cards, since it gives me memory segmentation error.
However, if I switch back to the Intel VGA card and use the opensource intel driver, it runs just fine with no flickering and nexuiz runs better (but of course not fast enough since the intel VGA card is crappy)
As you can see here, 3D acceleration seems to be enabled and Xorg doesn't seem to give any major error or warning:

  • Screen flickers and photoshop becomes slow

    Hi,
I have been using photoshop for quite a while now and have never faced any issues until now. I upgraded from windows 7/64 bit to windows 8.1/64 bit and the problems have started. When I turn on the ruler view my ruler flickers and also the photoshop becomes slow. If I hold the spacebar(hand tool) and want to move to some area it's not smooth. When the ruler view is turned off it's all fine but as a web designer I can't do without the ruler. Earlier I had the whole screen flickering issues but I did some search on the internet and have tuned the drawing board to basic and that has solved the issue but not the ruler flickering issue. BTW I am using Photoshop CC. I am unable to work on it and I need some help please help me guys.

  • Notification Center slow, red flash, general slowness and screen flickering

    Hi!
I'm experiencing strange bugs since several days on my MacPro.
When opening the Notification Center, the background of the center flashes red, and it opens very jerky and slowly. Sometimes it just closes again.
In general the computer is slowed down, when watching flash video for example, and screen flickering and tearing occurs when scrolling trough folders or webpages.
Has anyone experienced this before? I'm kind of suspecting the graphics card for the screen tearing, but the dehaviour of the notification center surprises me.
    Best,
    Paul

No matter what else about your system: dump the 2600s
Throw in a Samsung 840 SSD system boot drive
Move your user data to its own drive(s)
Keep your current system for backups.
Do that and should be fine. A Safe Boot or two, booting off an emergency Mac boot drive or clone of your system to run maintenance and repairs - especially if you have not. And backup sets, clone of every volume, and Time Machine set(s).

  • 10.6.5 and screen flickering on MacBook Pro Mid 2010

Ever since i got my 15" laptop (about 2 months ago) i would get screen flickering on external monitor once in a while (once or twice an hour). This did not bother me that much and i just accepted it. Flickering issues always happened only on external monitor. I keep my laptop closed, so internal display is off.
10.6.5 upgrade escalated this issue from one or two an hour to one flicker every few seconds. This is annoying. Very annoying.
I tried to delete all caches (user, library, system), reset PRAM, re-applied 10.6.5 combo update, repair permissions and delete windowserver preferences (user and library). Nothing helped. Unchecking "Automatic graphics switching" makes no difference.
The only thing that made a difference was to open the lid. Once i have both (external and internal) working, flickering stops.
Any ideas on other troubleshooting things to try?

I have quiet similar problem as described but it is on my macbooks screen. It blinks while I am working and sometimes blinks instead of dimming the display. It also flickers at 40% to 50% brightness while going dim, which camera won't capture.
I am sending you links to the two videos I was able to make, most of the time it won't blink when I video it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRP0I4VgQZY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5gdqY0ONyA
Lucky to have some proof. But Apple guys still denying it to be a problem at this stage, I have got its display changed twice and logic board replaced. But the problem persists.
Help! me to understand and explain the issue.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

  • Cannot install windows 7 using boot camp because screen turns off?

    I have a late 2008 Macboook Pro 15 inch
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9
After partition is complete through boot camp my mac restarts to instal Windows 7
The disk can be heard booting up but my screen is turned off.
After a min or so the keyboard goes active but screen remains off.
The disk is a store bought copy of windows 7
I have tried different installers and the same thing occurs the screen just turns off. You can hear the computer running but cannot see anything or do anything.
Have to hold down the power button to restart.
I tried booting it through a bootable usb same thing occurs.
Tried dowloadin drivers and putting them on MBRFAT usb like recomended for iMacs with a similar porblem. That Failed too.
Tried connecting a different monitor it didnt work.
So I am stumped has anyone had this problem. Not the black screen the screen being tuned off.
Ive been searching for days and havent found an answer realting to MBP.

Hold the option while turning on the computer. You should see your statup drives. Just choose the OS X drive and eject your disc once in OS X.
