Screen freezes are rare, but still happen

I've posted something similar before under
https://discussions.apple.com/message/21901345#21901345
It is not often, but the other day I saw a freeze happen.  Usually I go to wake my MacBook pro from sleep and it won't.  This time it froze while I was using it.  The screen went blank, the keyboard backlight went out, but I could still hear the fan or disk.  I put it on the power cord and left it for a while.  No key combination or touchpad action would make the MacBook respond.  Momentarily holding the power button had no effect.  Finally when I press and hold the power key the fan/disk shuts off and the MacBook dies and can be restarted.
My MacBook Pro is:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
My O/S is:  OS X 10.6.8

Did it again while I was at the beach for several hours, this time the keyboard backlight was on and there was the slight noise of a fan or disk.  No response to any keyboard input or short press of the power key.  I closed the lid and walked away for about 10 minutes.  Came back and opened the lid and still nothing.  Forced a reboot with the power button and got this:

Reset the SMC and PRAM, if the issue continues then you likely have a failing GPU (hardware) that requires repair. To be sure take it in and have it professionally assessed.

Try rebooting your iPad and see if they reappear.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If they still do not show up, make sure hat you don't have content restrictions set that could prevent certain apps from showing up on your iPad. Settings>General>RestrictionsAllowed Content.
if you still don't see them, connect your iPad to iTunes on your computer and you should see them in the iPad mini screens on the right side of iTunes after the iPad has been selected under "devices" and when you are in the apps pane of iTunes.

    Any other ideas?

Most likely you are suffering from a bug in iWeb that doesn't let you publish websites if an image you have added to your site begins with space. You can either search for that image and remove it.

I have the first version MacBook Pro, running 10.6.8 (most current OS that works).  It freezes with a pixelated screen. This may not happen for weeks, or it may happen every time i restart.  I repaired the hard drive with Disk Utility, but the problem still happens.  The temp gague shows a max of 51C. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

  • Bookmarks are there but nothing happens when you click on it, no information under properties, happened after going to firefox 4 then back to 3.6

I have the menu and all of my bookmark names are listed but when you click on them nothing happens. I right click and went to properties and nothing is filled in which explains why clicking on it does no good. Is there a backup of this information and how do I retrieve it. Windows XP Pro operating system. I have checked profiles and still only default user which is my only profile.

this is total bullshit. so frustrated with this nonsense.

  • MBP froze now screen is very dimmed but still on froze screen

Hi guys, earlier today I was using my 2012 MBP with not too many programs open. The computer then froze and I let it sit for a bit but it was still frozen. I then shut the computer lid and then the screen was black. I had thought it was turned off but I just realized the screen is extremely dimmed but I can just make Out the words. It's still on the same screen. I have turned the brightness up and I have made a genius appointment.
    Thanks,

Alright guys, I took the computer to apple and they said because it's so new they would give me a new one.

    Hi,
In case it's caused by a corrupted data file, please run Scanpst.exe to fix the data file to check the result.
Follow the instructions in this kb:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227/en-us
If you are using an .ost file, you can simply rename/remove it, then Outlook will generate a new one next time it starts.
Some corrupted or hidden rules may also cause this problem, you can use MFCMAPI to find and delete these rules to check the result:

  • IPad keeps saying needs to cool down after using for only 5 mins. Have reset but still happening

iPad keeps saying needs to cool down after only 5 mins use. Have reset but still the same. Any suggestions?

You need to have a computer that is running iTunes in order to restore the iOS software. Read this carefully and completely. If you have never used your iPad with iTunes in the past, it becomes a little more complicated.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

one of the problems may be that the original files may have been moved.
before you do anything, open itunes, then click on the ipod icon on the left side of the screen. there should be 4 check boxes. make sure the "manually manage music" check box is filled in
for one thing, try finding the folder where all of your music is stored.
then, click and drag the music into itunes, or onto your ipod.

  • IPod 4th gen's screen was glitching, now the screen is half white, but still works.

Hello everybody! I couldn't find the solution to my problem anywhere on Google so here I am and I really, really hope you guys can help me.
My iPod 4th gen has been acting up lately. Last night, the screen kept flickering and glitching. This happened the first week I got my iPod, but it stopped after a bit and it never happened again until now. I thought this glitching would stop after a bit, but this morning, I still found my iPod in the same state (if not, worse).
I think the problem is yesterday I plugged my iPod into my laptop and none of the USB ports could pick up my iPod so I plugged it into my ancient computer to see if there was something wrong with my cord, but my computer was able to pick up my iPod and so I left it there to charge. I also downloaded the latest version of iTunes onto that computer because the iTunes on that one was really old. After, I plugged it back into my laptop and it worked again. What I'm thinking is that maybe the computer did something faulty to my iPod and messed it up. I think that's what happened the first time also when my brother used my old iPod nano charger (had it for five years) to use it to charge my iTouch.
Anyways, my iPod now has a white screen in the middle and I can't see anything at the bottom, but the first half of the screen is still visible. Also, my iPod still works. I can click on apps, view photos, listen to music perfectly, it's just the screen is all messed up and everything is just super bright.
I've tried resetting it by holding onto the home and the on/off button but it doesn't do anything. I was hoping I wouldn't have to restore my iPod, but it looks like I have to maybe? Do you think I should let my battery completely drain and then plug into my laptop or something? Any suggestions besides dropping by the Apple store to check it?
    Thank you in advance.

I would restore the iPod. First from backup and if problem persists, restore to factory defaults.
If still have the problem then you have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT4623 I am having trouble downloading iBooks onto my iPad. The screen freezes up and it also happens when I want to see all books by a certain author. Please help....all suggestions appreciated!

What can I do to avoid my screen from freezing when in the iBooks store on my iPad?

I agree. I don't rely on iCloud as a backup, that is what I have my portable hard drive for. Its 500 GB so I can hold my entire iTunes library several times over on it. I have all my movies on my hard drive, but somehow "The Mist" got deleted off of my hard drive, so I figured "Well, the option to redownload an already purchased movie is available through iCloud, I'll just do that!"
And permissions and download availability have nothing to do with it, the movie's still there, it still allows me to redownload it. The only problem is when I click download, I get that message.
And nobody else uses my computer, but I do have multiple accounts authorized on it. Even still though, I am attepmpting to download it through the account I purchased it under. :/

  • Apple Loops Are Gone, But Still In Folder

All my apple loops have disappeared from Logic Pro, as well as a lot of plugin presets.
However they're still in the "/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/" folder in the following folders
    Apple Loops For Soundtrack Pro
    iLife Sound Effects
    Jam Pack 1
    Jam Pack Remix Tools
However Re-indexing the loops inside of Logic doesn't re-index them and can't find any loops.
Any suggestions? Would there be like a cache file I have to delete or something?
This happened around the time of the 9.1 update

Maybe your Spotlight index is corrupt or disabled for the drive where the files are? People have ben running to this problem when disabling Spotlight. Try reindex using a program called OnyX. Maybe there is other ways to do this.
