Screen Freezes -- Mouse still moves though.

Over the past week I have had an odd thing happening with my Mac.
The computer freezes up, I can't do anything, except the mouse pointer moves. I can open any programs or effect anything on the screen. The only way to get the computer to work again, it to shut it off with the button on the back, and reboot. It has been happening a lot lately.
Also, a few times the screen has gone completely black or to colored bars.
I have Norton Anti-Virus installed and have done a few scans with updated virus definitions, but have found nothing.
Anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

You might want to uninstall any anti-virus program.
Boot from the operating system Install DVD and go into Tools -> Disk Utility. Select your internal drive and Verify Permissions, Repair Permissions (may need to do a few times), Verify Disk, Repair Disk.
Reboot from the internal drive.

  • 2011 MBP randomly freezes, mouse still moves. Must force restart everytime. Frequently happening, please help.

    Running 2011 17" Macbook Pro on 10.6.8
I have a random issue that is continuously happening and I have been trying to find a fix for weeks.
At random times in the day (mostly when I am quitting applications, but not always), the computer will freeze, everything comes to a stop, the time freezes, the applications freeze, the whole operating system freezes but I can still move the cursor with the trackpad (I Just can't click anything). If music is playing when the freeze happens, it still continues to play, if I am charging my iPhone (it still continues to charge).
The ONLY way out of the freeze state when it happens is to do a forced shut down by holding down the power button. This is happening very frequently and it makes working on my mac unreliable.
Has anyone heard of an issue like this? I read a few posts on this site with some iMac users experiencing this, but haven't found many MBP users experiencing this.
Here is what I have done to try and fix the situation:
    1. Launched Disk utility, verified and repaired disk, verified and repair disk permissions.
    2. SMC reset
    3. PRAM reset
    4. Defrag using Disk Genius
    5. Erased, re-installed operating system and imported my time machine backup via. migration assistant
    6. (not sure if this helps, I found this tip in one of the apple discussion forums) Ran syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef in terminal.
The result that popped up in the textedit box was:
    Tue Apr 21 18:40:47 tests-MacBook-Pro kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -60
It didn't show the freeze that happened today in the textedit box.
When I restart the computer after the freeze state, if I go into the console application, I can't find activity at the exact time (hour, minutes and seconds) the system freezes.
On a final note, regarding hardware, I had the logic board replaced just before my warranty expired in December last year.
Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for this useful resource. Here are my results. I hit 'copy to the clipboard', but I have no idea where it went, so I just copied and paste to here.
I bolded all the parts that were red.

I have an issue where coloured dots (small squares) appear on my screen and it gets to the point where the entire screen freezes although the mouse still moves but nothing works and I need to turn the computer off at the switch. It doesn't happen all the time but is very annoying. Any ideas?

Reset the SMC and PRAM, if the issue continues then you likely have a failing GPU (hardware) that requires repair. To be sure take it in and have it professionally assessed.

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • Crash? Mouse still moves

So my MacBook Pro crashes, mouse still moves but it doesn't respond to other inputs. This occurs on the version installed on my SSD when i startup with the OS on my regular HDD it doesn't seem to have the problem.
Below my console log, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the crashes. Anyone an idea how to fix this without reinstalling the complete system and having to install all software again?

  • Screen Freezes but Mouse Still Moves

Hey I have an iMac with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors and I am running OS 10.6.7 and my screen freezes (sometimes goes to a black screen or many lines repeated) but my mouse is still able to move, then I have to shut down manually with the power button to reboot. It happens mostly when I am gaming with games such as starcraft 2 but sometimes with Word or Safari.
I have cleared my cache, vacuumed my computer, reinstalled OS X, tried regulating the temperature with smcfan but nothing works.  I also took it to futureshop on my warranty and they couldnt help me, nor could multiple Mac Phoneline assistants.
    Any solutions?

I added some Crucial Ram to my late '07 iMac (Aluminum, 20", 2.4 ghz),
Apple did some warranty work on it for me, a year or so ago, but.
I jumped up the Ram from 2-4. It's only showing 3 Gb's now.
And, the fans were ALL running at Full Speed! Wow, vacuumed my desk!
Anyway, I came here, and was advised to do several things, but the one that worked,
was 'Resetting the System Managements Controller" SMC.
    1  Shut down the computer.
2 Uplug the computer's power cord.
3 Wait fifteen seconds. (HMM, what couldja do?)
    4 Attache computer's power cord.
5 Press the power button, to turn computer back on.
I heard a high pitched 'Chong', (Higher than the start up sound), then, the start up sound.
Now, I'm in my comfort zone again!
Dam, if that didn't work wonderfully?!!!
    It did!
I hope that this may work for you!
    Be well.
PS btw, I still can't get my 2nd stick of Ram to work.
    I'm still working on that.
And, my third, Western Dig, 2 TB external HD!
What's with these third party suppliers?
    They suck!
Apple has to bring some control back in!
I bought the WD @ a Mac Store, (Cherry Hill, NJ)
    The Memory, through Amazon.
    Grrrrrrrr!
Hope this works for you, let us know, OK?

  • Unresponsive system but mouse still moves; even after restart

I was transferring a few files over my LAN wirelessly via file sharing to another macbook (B) when that macbook was closed and caused a disconnect. My macbook (A) has experienced issues since this disconnect. Even after restarts and resetting the pram, my system is unresponsive. The mouse will move but I cannot open applications, folders, files, or even the menu. It is as if my mouse is moving over top a picture of the desktop. I did manage to click and highlight my HD icon once but as soon as I did, the color wheel showed up and never stopped. My hard drive has over 10GB of space free. I was able to do a target disk boot and test the drive and its ok according to disk utility. Any ideas about what I could do would be greatly appreciated...preferably without wiping the hard drive.

The first issue occurred while I was transferring large files from one computer to another via afp file sharing over my wireless network. In the middle of this transfer, someone closed the receiving macbook. The macbook sending the files didn't respond well after this. It would intermittently freeze without a linked resource draining process. I believe the first occurrence was when I tried to right click a file that had been interrupted during transfer. I forced a restart, used the killall Finder command in terminal thinking that it might still be trying to transfer the file to a ghost in some way...even though that didn't make sense. I was able to verify and repair the external drive the file was on. After doing this and resetting the PRAM, it was back to normal for a little while. After a bit of normal activity (nothing strenuous), it began to freeze again. I tried the same steps and also booted in target disk mode so I could use the other macbook to run diagnostics. The drive got repaired. I attempted to restart the affected macbook but I couldn't do anymore than one thing and the never-ending colorwheel would appear. That one thing could be a single click on a file or an attempt of opening an application. After that I turned to this discussion forum after already impatiently attempting to safe mode boot and repair disk permissions. I tried this again with patience after your suggestion. It worked for a few hours and I was able to surf the web once more and go about the usual. I pulled up dashboard and pressed command+ to bring up the list of widgets and it froze on me again. I attempted previous steps again after restarting but there has been no difference in response. Throughout the entirety of this experience, there have been no error messages. Also, there's no difference in behavior if I disconnect everything but the power cable.
Sorry for the lengthy post but hopefully it will be helpful.

  • 2010 Macbook pro freezes a lot, but mouse still moves. It unfreezes if you wait. It also hard crashes... Also, weird lines and screen flashes.

I have a 2010 Macbook pro running snow leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8).  First off, this has been the worst computer I've ever owned or have heard of someone having, Mac or PC.  There hasn't been a time where something hasn't been wrong.  I'm going to list my specs, my current problems and maybe list previous problems after that.  Any advice or suggestions would be great.  My brother works for apple out in Cali and I've been sending him crash and bug reports and he can't seem to figure out what's going on.
    Specs:
2010 Macbook Pro (Mac OSX 10.6.8)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: Intel HD Graphics (288 VRAM) and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512 VRAM)
(if you want more info, just ask)
To start things off, my computer hard crashes at random points playing basically any game.  StarCraft 2 (when I could play the game prior to Blizzard patching my OS out of the minimum requirements), League of Legends, MineCraft and others all crash while in use.  My computer screen suddenly flashes white and then to black and whatever audio may have been playing in the past second of gameplay is thrown into a constant loop.  The screen is solid black with no mouse and there is no keyboard functionality.  The only thing I can do is hold down the power button.  I first started noticing this problem back when StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm came out.  I would crash every 4 or 5 games in this way.  Since that was happening I resorted to playing other games such as League of Legends.  I wasn't having any trouble at all, but gradually it started to have the hard crashing issues.  Initially every handful of games, now it crashes in roughly 50% of the games I play.  This happens while I have NO other applications open and this has happened even after a complete restart with only 2 things opening at startup.  League started crashing in this way after I brought my computer in to have a fan replaced.
Another thing which has started happening since I had my fan replaced at the apple store: My computer has become very sluggish at times and my computer freezes in another way.  Many times a day, I will find I click on something in an application and the entire computer locks up.  There's no spinning beachball.  There's no movement of any sort on the screen and there is no button functionality, but I can move the mouse.  Clicking does nothing.  This sort of freeze lasts for about 30 seconds up to 5 or 6 minutes or so.  After that, it suddenly just decides to work again.  I can tell when it unfreezes because the clock in the corner jumps to the correct time.  This has happened frequently while using Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  It also happened while trying to use Skype.  It was freezing the most when facebook or youtube has been open, but it happens without that happening as well.  One of the first times I noticed it, earlier this year, I was searching for work and tried to go to this website: http://www.nhab.org/ (looking for a job).  It froze my computer as I described above (and I didn't know it would unfreeze after several minutes, so I thought my computer was completely frozen). I restarted, went to the same website and it froze again.  I did this a third time and it froze again, so I restarted again.  On the fourth try, it loaded.  The frequency of this problem is ridiculous.  I actually decided to delete Google Chrome from my computer (and its support files) since my computer would freeze the most often with Chrome (though I used Chrome mostly for youtube and watching tv shows online).  Almost instantly after deleting Chrome, my computer was running significantly faster.  things loaded quicker in other browsers and aplications loaded smoother.  My text no longer lagged when typing in facebook...  It hasn't solved the freezing, though the freezing tends to last less time now.
Another thing that happens, which I am not sure is normal: When my computer is booting, after the grey screen, it changes to light blue.  During this light blue time, often times white horizontal centimeter to inch wide bars will flash across the screen near the top.  This also happens on shutting down.  I also noticed that when it shuts down the screen doesn't just shut off.  The screen flickers quick for up to a second and then it is off.  It doesn't just turn off.
My computer has also occassionally flashed for a brief fraction of a second, to the blue start up color and back to whatever I am doing.
Those are all issues I am having right now and I am beginning to wonder if this several thousand dollar computer is capable of doing much more than just writing text..
    Prior issues I have had:
Right from the start, I have had major graphical issues which I showed to the people at the apple store and they reinstalled flash, but they really didn't know what was going on.  These glitches would tiles previous graphical things I had done in an artistic mozaic across my desktop, replacing my background image with broken mozaics.  It's hard to explain without showing, so here are 2 screenshots from it:
The people at the store thought it was just flash... but I don't understand how that could be flash.  I would have to flip through different desktop backgrounds I used to make it go away.  After it doing this for 2 years, it has only happened once since then and not very badly..
Another issue I had: The battery on my laptop just about exploded... I woke up one morning with my laptop sitting on my night stand as usual, but there was a small crack across part of my trackpad.  I was scared because I thought I must have done something... I went to the bathroom, took a shower and when I came back the crack was farther across the trackpad.  I had breakfast, came upstairs and my trackpad had 1 crack across the whole thing with multiple mini cracks going in every direction from it.  After telling my brother what was going on, he quickly said that it was the battery and to take it to a store.  I took it to the store and showed them what was happening and they very quickly took it out back and I quote "threw the battery in a firesafe immediately" because when they opened the laptop it started to quickly expand.  This ended up cracking my trackpad as well as bending the bottom of the body on the laptop.  All had to be replaced...
Then I had the fan sounding like a weedwacker, so I had it replaced a couple months ago and a couple months ago is when the freezing began, the computer started running slowly and all games crash the computer.
I have had a lot of things go wrong, not a lot of things go right and I'm really frustrated.  Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to stop freezing or how to make it stop hard crashing during any of the games I play?
Basically, what I have done so far is reset the PRAM I think?  I held command + option + P + R on start up and had it chime 3 or 4 times.  Other than that, I don't know what to do.... suggestions?

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

  • Screen freezes, mouse can still move

When I tried to upgrade yesterday, I had a conflict with xorg-server. After a bit of searching I stumbled onto http://www.archlinux.org/news/436/. So I did that and my system updated perfectly.
When I booted this morning I could log in just fine (slim) but when my XFCE session loads, my screen just freezes at a random point (sometimes I can see pidgin being loaded, sometimes my screen is all black with just my mousepointer showing). I can always move my mouse pointer though.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  • Dim Screen, freezing, mouse issues

My macbook just started doing all of this today, with no prior warning. First, the mouse would stop working for no reason. i would unplug it and plug it back in, and it would work for anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes, then just quit again. a few hours later, my computer froze. I restarted it and it promptly froze again 5 minutes later. I swap out the RAM and run an apple hardware test, neither showing that anything is amiss. the last problem to arize was that the screen would dim until you ALMOST couldnt see anything. in the right light, you can still make out whats on the screen. What is the world is going on? normally i am pretty good at diagnosing computer problems, but the symptoms for this issue are all over the place. has anyone had any similar experiences? what is the problem?

This sounds like a hardware issue to me. You should be able to prove it shough by booting up with the install DVD and operating it for a period of time. Run the Apple hardware Test. Not that it can necessarily find your problem because it cannot find all hardware problems. But it is a way you can run the computer for a period of time and see what it does, WITHOUT the computer running on your normal software, i.e. your hard drives OS.
You could also run the Disk Utility app after booting with the Installation DVD, for the same reasons above. It will eliminate the hard drives OS install as a possible culprit of your problem.

  • Intermittent screen freeze!! Corrupt Firmware?

A week ago my G4 iBook, running 10.4.3, woke from sleep with the screensaver screen on but no reaction from mouse button, touchpad or keyboard buttons. I shut down and attempted reboot but only got to blue screen (before OSX loading screen and progress bar). My local Apple dealer checked it and reckoned that it was definitely not a hardware problem. They presumed that the system was corrupted and recommended I reboot with the install DVD (archive & replace). I did this and then reupdated to 10.4.3 and found that if I let it sleep, it would wake with either the desktop or screensaver but no action from any input buttons. Shutting down and rebooting gave me the same, aforementioned blue screen situation. I tried another reinstall and updated to 10.4.2 as this had not given any previous problem. But.... got the same problem! I reinstalled 10.4 (erase and install) and got the same problem. I have run Disk Utility and hardware diagnostics but get a clean bill of health. Before my last reinstall, I zero'd the hard drive and have only installed 10.4 from the DVD. I have not introduced any other documents, applications or received any emails (I thought it may be a virus - I don't have protection). It worked fine on the initial welcome and set-up wizard and let me even use the web, but I let it fall asleep with the screen saver on and then got exactly the same response as my original problem. Sometimes it will boot up – but eventually the screen freezes (trackpad still moves pointer though!) and I have to shut down. Sometimes it boots up till the gray apple/gear wheel screen disappears then stops at a paler blue screen (seems a bit paler than the background of the OS loading screen with the progress bar). I'm wondering: If it is not the hardware, and it is not the system software, could it be the Firmware? I know it is sometimes necessary to update the Firmware on certain machines. Can the Firmware become corrupted? Can I check or verify the Firmware? Can I reinstall the Firmware? Hope you guys can help because I am running out of ideas!

    Hi straightshooter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
It sounds like hardware to me. When mine acted that way it was the logic board that was bad. You should call Apple, (not the local reseller), to get it taken care of.

    Hi @PedroCardoso
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I saw your post regarding the freezing issues you are having with your notebook. I will be happy to help you. However, I do have a few questions for you. What game are you playing when the issue starts? What operating system are you using? So it only freezes for 2 or 3 seconds but it never completely freezes?

  • W520 Screen Freeze/Distortion and Crash

My experience with the W520 is now gone into the depressing category. This is my SECOND machine from Lenovo. My first machine would freeze and then immediately shut-down at random interval as documented with other in this lengthy thread:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-shuts-off-intermittently-no-BSOD-or-shut-...
Now, 3 weeks after the new machine was working great... I've gotten three crashes within the last 24 hours. Different than the ones before. This time, the external monitors go haywire and display these funky patterns and colors. When this happens the entire machine is frozen, excpet the mouse still moves around. The only thing I can do is a hard power off. Obviously after that hard power off, Windows detects an improper shut down. I'm not running any software that I hadn't been running for the previous 3 weeks. In this case, Excel, Skype, Ninja Trader (day trading software), Chrome, OneNote, Adobe Reader, Windows Explorer, and Picture Viewer.
Here is a link to the YouTube video I captured after the last of the three crashes:

Any help would be appreciated... Of course, I'll be in contact with Lenovo....
    Thanks,

    @ToddPMan
You should really consider taking the money and run from Lenovo as far as possible
This W520 case is ridiculous , it's 21 pages almost 3 months of the post and the Lenovo doesn't have a clue whats wrong.
Then there is 9 pages thread about SSD issues, and 9 pages about speed step not working about battery, they ship Laptop with damaged ST9500420AS Hard drives , and it's look like that RAM modules aren't paired properly. For me it's a lot of issues for top notch Lenovo W520 for more then 2000$ which is not reliable at all, performance is not so brilliant.
I think all of has something more important things to do then troubleshoot their laptops...
I don't see on the forums Lenovo taking really active part in our case, they don't even appolagise for inconvience and trouble we have.
At this point You can consider 3 companies Dell, Toshiba and eventually Sony.

  • T510 Video driver - Screen freezes

    Hi
I have been using T510 with Windows 7 Pro for about couple of years. For the past couple of days the laptop screen freezes up and even though there is no activity. There is no hard drive activity when this happens either. When I restart the machine it shows a blank screen as soon as the Windows OS starts up. Tried upgrading the video driver as well as restored an image from two months ago. The only way to get back in is to restart the machine in safe mode and try to change the display settings.
My guess is that the video card needs to be replaced but I believe the video card is integrated into the mother board. Would someone be able to give me an estimate on how much it would cost to replace the motherboard?
    Thank you

Changing the video drive which has been working fine all along is the wrong approach.
I sounds as though the OS has crash and stalled.
Failing memory can do this (use the Microsoft memory diagnostics which is on the DVD). Also check the event log for criticle events on this. Bad power and overheating could also manifest in this way although its not likely a CPU overheat unless marginal since that usually foreces a reboot and/or BSOD. The GPU may be running too hot after a while.  Clearing the cooling channel (many threads on this), compress aerosol can and vacumn nozzle will do it blowing air in reverse though and sucking from the fan end (stall the fan blades so they don't over spin.
The notebook should be off and remove battery if you're using a paper clip as I've done in case you short something otherwise.
