Screen freezes when shutting down with sound running

I have Windows 2000 with GF4 and Audigy2 ZS.  I installed the latest WinDVR and tuner drivers and watever from the web.  The card works fine, like I can watch TV and stuff, but when I try to close the program, the screen freezes and the sound keeps on running at the background.  I have installed the latest directx drivers, video drivers, sound drivers and windows update... Please help

If your PC has an Intel Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading turned on please read my post re. problems with this configuration.

  • White screen flash when shutting down after a suspend

If I have suspended my laptop at any time during its uptime, when shutting down the screen flashes white, but it turns off as usual. This only happens if I have suspened.
There are no issues as far as I can tell, I see nothing much in journalctl when comparing a suspeded shutdown vs no suspend.
Im using nouveau, and I'm up-to-date as of now.
    Google hasnt returned much,
    Anyone else seeing this?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • Mac Pro running leopard freezes when shutting down

    Hi,
I am having problems with the Mac Pro that was assigned to me at my workplace. Here are some of its specs
    it runs Leopard (10.5.8)
    processor 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xenon
    memory 32 gb
Hard disks: here's the issue, It shows 3 hard disks on the finder (more details below)
The first issue is that it won't shut down. When I try to turn it off the screen goes blue and freezes. As I read on some forums that people were having issues with Leopard shutting down, I left it on that state for a whole weekend and when I came back it was still frozen.
The second issue is that aslmanager executes periodically and consumes 100% of one of the cores. Luckily most of the time I can use the other cores to do the work, but for heavy chores I do need that extra power. I tried killing it, and it works for some time, but it restarts after a while effectively slowing down my work (I hate having to babysit the computer for hours while it computes, killing the aslmanager periodically, a workaround would be to make a script that periodically kills it but I think this issue is just a symptom of a graver problem).
My guess is that the computer has 4 hard disks, with one of them broken (system information shows 4 hard disks, but the finder only shows three). This somehow affects the operative system, which tries to ineffectively communicate with it before shutting down. Some process may also be logging the problem, creating huge log files that aslmanager then tries to manage.
    My questions are:
    - How can I test my guess to know if it is correct? I must say that a blue screen and a stray process are not a transparent way to convey information to the user about a hardware problem.
    - How can I fix this issue? In case my guess is correct, would disconnecting the hard disk solve the problem?
    Thanks a lot.
PS: Even though I don't have to pay for the electricity bill at my workplace, I do try to use as little electricity possible since I believe we are overexploiting our planet. This makes my issue with the Mac Pro even more nagging since I can't help but think that leaving it turned on the whole time and using one of its cores continuously is using a lot of energy.

Take a look in Disk Utility.
Also, About This Mac to see what System Profile shows.
You could have two drives in a RAID configuration.
See if it has the Apple Mac Pro RAID controller (affects sleep)
    * Disconnect any peripherals
    * Clean OS instlal
    * Disk Warrior
    * Clone the OS (CCC or SuperDuper)
    * Try running with Safe Boot
    * Apple Hardware Test (your OEM DVD it shipped with, likely 10.4.x) and use D on startup to run
    Now the bad news.
The directory and file system get worse and are corrupt and you need to repair and restore to get it back to working right, which is where Disk Warrior and SuperDuper come in.
Your business could get a more powerful Mac Pro or upgrade the processors even to 8-core 5355 or 5360s.
FBDIMMs use a lot of watts and create heat more than anything, too, and those need COOLING and a boost to the fans, so you want to run the fans and set 2-3 extra profiles for when you are running a heavier load. SMCFANCONTROL 2.2+
Apps that aren't multi-thread / multicore you have to wait and upgrade and up to the vendor to ship a more efficient version that uses all the cores (and threading) IF it is an app that can and will benefit. Not all will.
A couple backup sets of course is a must and most any business will have redundancy and a good recovery plan strategy in place.

  • IMac freezes when shutting down

My 3 month old iMac (24" Extreme) freezes (spinning wheel just keeps turning) when I try to Shut Down. Then I have no option but to manually shut down the machine using the power button at the back of the machine.
I have made sure that I quit all applications but the problem persists.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Many thanks in advance for help.
I'm having a similar problem. I shut down my iMac at the end of the day (we have a lot of power outages here). The last few days, after I choose "Shut down," it won't -- the screen displays the screen saver (desktopia) but no dock or menu bar. Sometimes the cursor is a spinning wheel, but more often it's an arrow.
Just to be infuriating, the problem is intermittent.
Finally, I just did the latest update (QuickTime 7.5, AirPort Utility 5.3.2, and Digital Camera Raw Compatibility) which required a restart. It went to the screen saver minus dock routine (above), then to a plain light-blue screen.
It seems to work fine when I manually restart.

  • Imac freezing when shutting down

hi, i have this problem for quite a while now. it does not happen all the time but 9 times out of 10 this happens.
when i shut down my imac, the screen goes blue as it should then you get the circle with the black lines going round until it shuts down. thats where it stops, it freezes there and then i have to manually shut it down by pressing the button at the back.
is this a common problem ?
does it cause my imac harm by shutting down this way ?
how can i fix this ?
it didnt do this in the beginning only a few months later it started to
    any help will be appreciated
    thanks

Had had my 500GB HD replaced by apple in my imac24 today, after reinstalling everything and updating I indeed am experiencing the issue of the power button press to sleep COMPLETY locking and freezing the iMac.
I am for now clicking the iMac to sleep but plann to call tomorrow and ask why this has started happening.
Has anyone had a resolve yet??

  • DEVLDR when shutting down with sblive

    Hi,
I am getting a message about a DEVLDR program not responding when I shut down. I have installed the sbli've5. drivers for my card from its disc.
I used to know how to fix this but I have forgotten and I've been unable to find the answer on the net.
I have read that sbli've cards do this with xp and the microsoft site says to uninstall the drivers and use windows ones.
I know there is another way to fix this, but I can't remember.
    Anyone know how?
    Thanks if you can help.

    Update: Got it working! :robotwink:
    Here's what I did:
Uninstall Creative Software in 'Add Remove Programs'</LI>
Uninstall Creative Soundblaster Driver in 'Device Manager'</LI>
Shut down the PC manually if you can't do it in Windows</LI>
Pull out the Sound Card completely</LI>
Boot the PC and go in to 'Safe Mode' (hold down F8)</LI>
Go in to the following directory (on C:/ or whatever dri've you boot from): Windows\System32\</LI>
    Locate and Delete Devldr File</LI>
Shut down and re-install Sound Card</LI>
Boot again in to Safe Mode (if you try to go in to full windows everything will be reeeal slow!)</LI>
    Put XP CD in Dri've</LI>
Go in to Device Manager properties for 'Creative Soundblaster', 'Driver' Tab</LI>
Click 'Update Driver' and leave the option on to 'Install the software automatically'.</LI>
Windows will now find the drivers on the CD and install</LI>
Finally reboot in to Windows and everything should be running groovy</LI>
Note: The only issue I had after doing this was my Device Manager showing that the 'Creative SBLi've Gameport' had loaded the driver but was not able to find the hardware device? I will try to solve this next, however I can tell you that my sound is working peachy and shut down is now working as it should.
By the way, if you don't have a WinXP disk then may I suggest downloading the latest drivers from Creatives website: http://www.creative.com/language.asp...port/downloads
    Good luck!

  • ITunes freezes when shutting down, playcount not saved

    Okay, hey...
Everytime I shut down my iTunes, it freezes, and this Windows-standard-popup shows and ask me if I want to report the error or just shut down the program. (Sorry this message is different in English, I'm currently on a Danish computer).
So, anyway, after I click "Shut down the program", it closes, so yeah.. problem solved, I thought. But when I start up iTunes again, my play count is not updated. There's this new song, and I've listened to it a gazzilion times, and the play count is XX when I shut down iTunes, but when I start the program again, it's 0. Weird.
And the program still freezes when I shut it down!? EVERYTIME I close it. And the play count is NEVER saved...
    Help...?
    Windows XP

I read in another thread that you needed Quicktime working properly, in order to have iTunes working without any problems.
I just loaded my Quicktime, and it works perfectly. So no problem there.

  • Gray screen/freeze/forced shut down

Several times over the past couple days, while I was just browsing the internet, I've gotten a gray screen and a message that says I need to hold down the power button to shut down my computer (in several different languages, at that). It basically looks everything else, I can't click out of it, so I have no choice to but to force a shut down.
    Anyone know what's going on?

its a kernel panic.   they can happen because of many problems.  they can be caused by many things but im not sure how to fix them.  try browsing the forums for kernel panics and see if you can do anything with that, at least until someone comes along that can help you directly.
    good luck

Maybe you can help me to solve this problem, because i can normaly work when i need to be connected.

    Hi
It is not easy to give you some precise answer but try to remove WLAN card from device manager and restart the unit. You can also check Toshiba download page and try to install the latest WLAN card driver.

  • New ProRet: Slow when shutting down, mouse freezes

Hello everyone, I'm new here so welcome any suggestions if I'm doing something wrong. This is my first mac, I've always only used Windows.
My notebook is a Mbook Pro Retina 13inch mid-2014 (bought in Nov). Running OS X 10.9.5. Memory is 8GB and storage is 121GB (currently 75GB free), it only has the applications and the odd Word file, for itunes library and pictures we use an external hard drive.
I don't think I've done anything too bad to it, but I did install a couple of applications a few days before the computer started to go funny: Popcorn Time, but deleted it after 2 days. Then it went a little bit slow so I downloaded and installed CCleaner for Mac and ESET Cyber Security, in case Popcorn Time had virus or malware, but nothing came up in the virus check.
Up until last week, it was running okay, very fast turning on and shutting down, no freezing, no spinning beach ball. But last week, the display went distorted for under a minute (gave me time to take the picture I'm attaching) and since then, every time I shut it down, it takes longer than normal and shows a spinning wheel on a white background. Yesterday, the first episode of non-appearing pointer happened but very briefly, only a few seconds. However, today I was busy typing on Microsoft Word and when tried to use the trackpad, the pointer wasn't there, never appeared again, I could no longer even type anything and neither F4 or F3 responded. Tried Command+Option+Esc and nothing. Pressed shut down button for 3 seconds but the pointer didn't respond to click on any of the options, so had to force shut down with the button. Now I'm scared this will happen again and I will have to force shut down more than is safe.
In case it's relevant, we use the HDMI connection a lot to watch movies on a TV and the display does sometimes move around or briefly show horizontal line but I assume it's normal when plugging in a hdmi cable.
Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening and is there a way to find out what is wrong with it? I wasn't expecting to have problems so early on with a macbook :/
Any ideas will be most welcome (I've no idea about changing system settings or the like).
    Thank you

The picture you have included in your post looks like your Mac may be having some kind of hardware graphics problem. (It's definitely not caused by a virus!)
I'd recommend making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store and have the techs run some diagnostics. Be sure to show them that picture as well, assuming the machine doesn't exhibit the symptoms during your appointment.

iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Hp 300-1223 window 7 want shut down with power also the screen black

all in one 300-1223 that want shut down with the power button every still run's and the scrren stay black when power up .Using window's7. Help please

It could be the power supply, shorted device of any kind attached (bad printer, flash drive, keyboard, mouse, network connection), memory problem, video card fan not spinning and the video card could have overheated, bad capacitors (rounded or leaking a brown or dark substance). The first think you should do is make sure it is not under warrantee.  If it is, contact HP.  If it isn't, remove the cover and inspect the board for bad capacitors, fans not turning, disconnect all non essential items like the hard drive, DVD, floppy if you have one, all external devices (yes the monitor) and turn on the computer. Does it appear to stay on? If yes, shut it down by holding in the power button for 5 or more seconds or flipping the power switch on the power supply or pulling the plug. Connect the monitor and then one item at a time leaving the hard drive with your important data as the last item. If it didn't stay on. Try to use only one piece of memory and try each memory slot, try the next piece etc. If that doesn't work, the best guess is the power supply (if you have an ohm meter - test the power supply first).  You can run a anti-virus/adware/spyware check by removing the drive and attaching it as a 2nd drive on another machine.  You could also run a check disk while it is there.  I like to download the hard drive manufacturer's disk certification test iso image and make a bootable cd.  Boot off the cd and test your drive.  It can fix bad sectors and some minor drive problems.
