Screen freezing grey - intermittent

Hi all,
My MacBook Pro has started to behave strangely with the screen freezing and turning a grey color for a period and time and then coming back to life. It used to be occasional but its happening more frequently now. It seems to come and go, and might last a few minutes or longer. A few times it lasted so long, that I had no choice but to switch off power and restart. Everything just freezes and it turns grey and sometimes get more and more saturated grey after 30-60 seconds. I can tell the CPU is still processing but I hear the normal sounds with applications running. I tried putting it to sleep and then wake it up, but the grey is still there.
Any ideas?
Paul

Sounds like a hardware problem with the screen or graphics card then, best give Apple a call.

Using Safari, search works but screen is greyed and frozen. Any ideas?

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe

  • IPhone 6 plus screen freezes intermittently - forced restart required

I'm on an iPhone 6 plus with 128gb running 8.1.2.
It seems that intermittently (recently mostly in iMessage; which hasn't been behaving since 8 & yosemite) my phone screen freezes.
By freeze, I mean it is visible. It will even paralax on the home screen so some CPU/GPU stuff is working, I can even click and double-click the home button, but touching the screen elicits no response what so ever.
Recently a new version of the problem has only started in iMessage where I am getting some results, but never anywhere close to the target I actually touch.
    Is this a known issue?
Is there a solution, that is known to work?
Is this a hardware problem or software problem?
I have removed all non-apple keyboards because it seemed to always start when I was typing someplace (regardless of keyboard used).
    Suggestions? Help!
    Thanx!

I've been having similar issues with iOS 8.1.3 on my six plus. It will freeze exactly as you describe--home button works, parallax works, but touching the screen elicits no response. I can also double-press the home button to bring up multi-task view, and I can scroll through the open apps, but I can neither change to another app nor swipe apps up to close them. The freezing occurs most often within the Messages and Email apps, but I've had it happen in Safari, Settings, Calendar, etc. When it happens, its usually a second or two after I open one of the apps in question. Once it freezes, I have to press the lock button and then unlock it, and then everything works fine again for a period. Restarting the phone doesn't really help, as it will randomly freeze again when using one of the aforementioned apps. Apple support recommended I try backing up to iTunes and restoring the phone using the Set up as New option. It seems to have helped a little. Maybe its my imagination, but it doesn't seem to be freezing nearly as often or as long (knocks on wood). But it did not alleviate the problem entirely.

  • Grey Screen Freeze after 10.6.7 update

I have 2 iMacs. My wife's is 2008 3.06 Ghz 24" model with Snow Leopard. Just updated to 10.6.7, and on re-boot we entered perpetual grey screen freeze ups. Followed guidance from support article - specifically to remove peripherals (attached were 2 USB devices - HP inkjet printer and WD 500G portable HD used as Time Machine. Also connected to LAN via RJ-45) After re-boot I changed network to airport to access LAN. When I re-inserted ethernet jack the grey screen immediately came up. Tried various combinations and ethernet connect always kills machine. Any ideas? I'm holding off on 10.6.7 update for other iMac.

Because I've had strange problems with past system update downloads, I now always get my system updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/
I always use the Update Combo version. It installs a fresh set of all previous updates as well as the new one. This gives you a fresh beginning with system 10.6.x. Since I adopted that practice, I've had no more issues with updates.

  • Screen freezes after login on Lion OS X (intermittent)

Ever since upgrading my MacBook Pro (purchased Apr-10) from Leopard to Lion I'm experiencing an intermittent problem where the screen freezes once a user has logged in. The problem only occurs when the machine is started from off and doesn't occur when starting from sleep or when switching users.
This problem affects all users set up on this machine and results in a cursor that can still be moved but can't select anything and a keyboard that is unresponsive. Most times the cursor shows as the coloured wheel. I have left the machine in this state for over 30 minutes to see if it would recover but it doesn't and I have no option other than to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button. Sometimes it can take a couple of hard resets before the machine recovers.
The configuration of my machine is fairly straight forward with an Apple Time Capsule providing backup and WiFi and minimal software installed.
I have found that disabling all 'Open At Login' apps reduces the likelihood of the problem but doesn't cure it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and can provide a solution as I want to avoid having to revert to Leopard if possible.

Accelerated Video Drivers for the 5770 and 5870 first appeared in 10.6.5, so when running 10.6, be sure to update to at least that version before drawing conclusions.
Otherwise, I think your conclusions that this is a graphics card problem are likely correct. Over a very large sample, these cards have been much more reliable than many previous cards. But you do not have a very large sample, you have one card.
The Mac Pro (65lb tower) uses Error Correcting Code memory, so this is NOT a RAM memory problem or you would be getting kernel panics with machine check, uncorrected error.
Apple hardware test is a tool that only seems to detect the grossest of errors. It is famous for false negatives.

  • My iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down my screen

Hi, my iMac screen freezes and a grey colour slowly creeps down the screen and has a large black square in the centre saying "You must restart your computer by pressing the power button and then pressing it again to restart" or words to that effect in English and about 4 or 5 other languages.  I find this happens more frequently when I try to stream movies or tv shows.  It also happened when I was trying to download a couple of tv shows from iTunes.
It also sometimes makes a wierd sound a kind of loud noise like a record stuck in a groove.  This has happend many times since upgrading to Lion.  I hear a lot of people on here talking about their screens going completely black and not responding.  I believe that mine has only gone black a couple of times and I couldn't wake it up from "sleep mode" with the mouse or keyboard.  I don't know if this is also happening to other people, but my bluetooth keyboard keeps disconnecting all the time since the upgrade as well, it's driving me nuts!!  Plus my wifi will show that it is fully operational, however, I can't use the internet when I wake my computer from sleep mode.  I have to click on wifi and turn wifi off then on again before i can use it.
Is Apple going to come out with a fix or are we going to eternally suffer indefinitley.

    Hi Eric,
I don't know why it didn't work before, but here is the most recent errol log.  It crashed again about an hour later.  If there is a solution, i would greatly appreciate knowing what it is because I can't enjoy using my computer anymore because of these constant crasahes.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Intermittent screen freeze!! Corrupt Firmware?

A week ago my G4 iBook, running 10.4.3, woke from sleep with the screensaver screen on but no reaction from mouse button, touchpad or keyboard buttons. I shut down and attempted reboot but only got to blue screen (before OSX loading screen and progress bar). My local Apple dealer checked it and reckoned that it was definitely not a hardware problem. They presumed that the system was corrupted and recommended I reboot with the install DVD (archive & replace). I did this and then reupdated to 10.4.3 and found that if I let it sleep, it would wake with either the desktop or screensaver but no action from any input buttons. Shutting down and rebooting gave me the same, aforementioned blue screen situation. I tried another reinstall and updated to 10.4.2 as this had not given any previous problem. But.... got the same problem! I reinstalled 10.4 (erase and install) and got the same problem. I have run Disk Utility and hardware diagnostics but get a clean bill of health. Before my last reinstall, I zero'd the hard drive and have only installed 10.4 from the DVD. I have not introduced any other documents, applications or received any emails (I thought it may be a virus - I don't have protection). It worked fine on the initial welcome and set-up wizard and let me even use the web, but I let it fall asleep with the screen saver on and then got exactly the same response as my original problem. Sometimes it will boot up – but eventually the screen freezes (trackpad still moves pointer though!) and I have to shut down. Sometimes it boots up till the gray apple/gear wheel screen disappears then stops at a paler blue screen (seems a bit paler than the background of the OS loading screen with the progress bar). I'm wondering: If it is not the hardware, and it is not the system software, could it be the Firmware? I know it is sometimes necessary to update the Firmware on certain machines. Can the Firmware become corrupted? Can I check or verify the Firmware? Can I reinstall the Firmware? Hope you guys can help because I am running out of ideas!

    Hi straightshooter,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
It sounds like hardware to me. When mine acted that way it was the logic board that was bad. You should call Apple, (not the local reseller), to get it taken care of.

There were lots of entry in threads, where the screen freezing issue was described (disorted screen with strange lines, only reboot helps). Nearly all cases seem to be related to the ATI 2600 card.

I opened this new thread to show, that this problems occurs not only for the ATI card but for the NVIDIA 8800 card, too.
My MacPro was delivered 8 days ago and was running without any problems. But all of a sudden, I got that screen freeze. And it wasn't the first time, I was heavely working 2-3 hours with that computer.
In total, 2 screen freezes showed on my computer. The first one during working with the computer. The second one during booting into MacOS X. The screen freeze occured during the boot phase with the grey screen and the spinning wheel.
    My configuration:
    MacPro 2.8, Dual Quad Core
    6 GB RAM
3 harddisks, 1 standard from Apple, 2 Samsung with 750GB
    MacOS 10.5.2
    Formac 20" Monitor
Perhaps others have this problem, too? Than we should emphasize, that this is not an ATI related problem.

I've actually been having the freezing issue for a while now but I didn't have the know-how to troubleshoot it (PC tech trying to support the only Mac lab in the building).
MacPro will freeze randomly (no trend in time, system strain, or open programs). The mouse will operate but will not interact with anything.
    Specs:
    MacPro - Model 1,1
    Dual Core Xeon 2.66
    2gb RAM
    nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
    Mac OS 10.4.11
The machine always has 2 displays connected to it so the workaround that was discussed for the ATI 2600 doesn't apply. I had 1 display connected here in my shop and it froze for that as well.

  • Ipad is frozen, after sliding the log off bar the screen is grey and a small circular icon is spinning in the centre of the screen.

My Ipad has been freezing up.  I just tried to log off and after sliding the log off bar the screen is grey and there is a small circular icon spinning in the centre of the screen.  Over half an hour now.  Has anyone run into this before?

Try and hole the home button and power off button at the same time until the iPad shuts off,do not let to of either button until you see the Apple appear in the screen. This will reset your iPad without loosing anything and try power off with the slide bar again after you complete the steps.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod Screen freeze

Every time when I listen to music with repeat on for 30mins. The iPod screen would go gray and when you touch the circle it wouldn't light up but you can still see the time and it wasn't on hold. It would usually happen after the song is over. I had to restart the iPod in order for it to work again and choose the song, but it'll end up happening again.

This almost exact same thing has been happening to me. When I play this one game and don't play the game that I saved the last time I played and try to start a new game my ipod screen turns grey with an apple on it. If I try to do the same thing again it restarts itself. Also sometimes my ipod just freezes and I am getting sick of it. I'm thinking of contacting apple and asking them about it.

  • Alarm sound and screen freeze

I have a 13 inch MacBook pro running OSx lion, after around 2 hours intermittent alarm sounds and screen freezes with coloured checks, reboots ok but reoccurs, it has a ssd drive any suggestions?

I just had this happen. I just installed new memory. Did you install any new hardware.

  • How to fix a screen freeze

Hey there. Is your macs screen frozen? Do you fear that it will freeze? Then this is for you!
This happens when you use the trackpad/keyboard for any amount and the screen freezes.
Simply shut down and reset the PRAM! (by pressing simultaneously the keys P+R+alt+Command before the grey screen). Once that pesky grey screen goes away, take your hands off the keys and enjoy a happy computer.

User troubleshooting as outlined in the manual starts with a simple power off, then back on. Have you tried this yet? If this doesn't work, try a reset as outlined below:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Gray screen after screen freeze and finder+all programs restart.

Sometimes, (like 4 or 5 times a day) my screen freezer, i get a loading circle, a gray screen and then Finder and all my programs restart.
It's doing that since i updated to Osx lion.
    Computers
         - 21.5" iMac 2010
         - 15" MacBook Pro 2006
Does anyone know what this is? And how do I solve this problem?
Because its shuts down everything im busy with (and doesn't save it).

I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
    Execute the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy /
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
    touch /System/Library/Extensions
    exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch.  They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up.  Firefox was okay.  Good Luck!

  • Screen Freezes and then goes white

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and this question may already been posted.
Recently when I am watching shows online, my screen will all of a sudden freeze and then start to fade to a grey and then to a white. After a couple moments it usually fixes itself, but in some cases I've had to manually shut it down.
It is starting to do it more frequently (maybe once a day). I've never had the problem before and I've been watching shows online for over a year now. I'm just wondering if there may be something wrong that can be fixed or done.
Any help or advise would be appreciated.
I'm using the Macbook with the aluminum casing.
One more question, sorry..... Is it normal for the case to get warm, almost too warm?
    Thanks again!

mine does this too, I bought my macbook in currys and I went there yesterday to hopefully get my macbook fixed under a year warranty. I took pictures while my mac was freezing and showed it to them so they performed some tests about graphics I think, then the only thing they said was the heat is the problem nothing else. I've got a transparent case for my mac, they told me to get rid of it and so I did but when I got home and used it for about 30 minutes, the screen freezes again and goes to white. What do I do now? Help please.
