Screen freezing, leopard won't load, boot-camp and parallels,

This problem started a while ago, around the time that I installed boot camp so I think it may be related. Sometimes when I am playing a DVD or a game or using something I've downloaded my macbook will freeze or automatically restart. It happened once a week or so and afterwards it wouldn't load, it would sometimes gets as far as the gray screen and the loading symbol and the freeze and restart and this would happen over and over again and would happen on the windows and mac partitions of boot-camp. I got a bit sick of it so uninstalled boot-camp and decided to try parallels instead, the problem is even worse now and the screen will freeze but will restart up to leopard fine but a while later it will freeze again or sometimes it will do as soon as the logins screen appears. What could be wrong and could it be related to having windows on my computer as it seems to happen quicker when I am on windows. Any help appreciated.

+*I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from an external harddrive*+
Is there a reason that you are trying this method as opposed to using your DVD?
Do you have a working installation of Snow Leopard on the external drive or have you tried to create a bootable image of the install media on the external drive?

  • Installing Windows 7 RC1 with Boot Camp AND Parallels?

I have a 24" iMac (2009 model) and have successfully installing Windows 7 RC1 using Boot Camp. No problems at all and everything is working fine. But now I'm contemplating purchasing Parallels and using Windows 7 in a window.
I just need to know the steps involved and how this works. First I purchase and install Parallels. Then I run it and somehow tell it to use my Boot Camp partition for the VM, right? In this way, I'm assuming I don't actually have to install Windows 7 again or make another partition, right? Once I get the VM installed, then I can either boot to Windows 7 from startup OR boot from within Mac OS using Parallels and it would be the same?
If I can do it this way, can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions on how to choose the right settings in Parallels? I have found instructions for installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp and Parallels separately, but not how to use the Boot Camp install for the VM in Parallels.

Wow, it was much easier than I thought it would be! Downloaded the trial of Parallels. Installed it and pointed it to my Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it. And minutes later, I'm up and running with Windows 7 in Parallels. Sound didn't work at first, but after I did a Windows Update, it installed the correct driver and now everything is working great. I can't believe how smooth this thing runs within Leopard. I allocated 1GB of RAM for WIndows 7 and it's seems fine so far, but I really haven't run any resource-intensive apps yet.

  • Loading Windows XP on Boot Camp and Parallels

    Hi,
I am trying to load windows XP on to a new 27 inch iMac I just purchased. Upon visiting an apple store the other day, I spoke to someone who told me I could put Windows XP on the iMac using Boot Camp and also use Parallels so that I could run Windows XP at the same time as OS X.
My objective is to be able to run windows XP at the same time as OS X (Parallels does this very well) and also have the option to just run Windows XP if I need the full power of the computer for some memory intensive PC applications.
So I was told that if I first loaded Windows XP on to the computer using Boot Camp I could then load Parallels on to it and access windows from OS X (the way you can with parallels.
Is there anyone who understands what I'm saying/ done this before/ have any insight at all?
    Cheers,
    Ed

Have a look at this link it should help

  • Kernel Panic boot camp and parallel

    Hello,
I've installed boot camp and run windows since the last couple of weeks and it runs flawlessly. However, when I tried to create a virtual machine via Parallel and set my boot camp partition as VM's partition, my Macbook crashed.
Now I cannot even get into MacOS X since it always returned a kernel panic message (Please restart the computer...). I already tried every way imaginable (restart it, press X, reset PRAM, etc), I can't even boot to my own install CD!
Here's the error log (BTW, I'm currently on XP running via boot camp, it seems that I can still access my mac partition via macdrive):

Unfortunately, what you did not post was the panic log. Open Console and locate the panic.log. Post the log entry for the kernel panic.
I suggest you might try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • About Boot Camp and Parallels

Can I use the Windows Xp that I installed by Boot Camp for Parallels?
In the other hand, Do I need a Windows installation for Boot Camp and other for Parallels?
    Thanks in advance.

But note that you will need to reactivate Windows when you run it under Parallels for the first time. For this reactivation you will probably need to call Microsoft.

  • Boot Camp and Parallels together?

I have Boot Camp and Window XP installed. I wanted to run a PC only game and was wondering if you can have Boot Camp already installed and still install Parallels and maybe use that instead when necessary.
    Thanks!

  • Can I use Boot Camp and Parallels 5???

I have a windows 7 partition w/ boot camp. I was wondering if I can also have parallels 5 too. Here is a example, Can I use boot camp for my games and use parallels for little stuff and internet? I want both! Can I do this? I am thinking about getting parallels 5.

    Hi,
with earlier Windows versions (XP or Vista) this was definitely possible to do.
I am not that sure if there are problems with Windows 7 doing this.
Have a look at the Parallels Support Forum here http://forum.parallels.com/

  • Installing windows xp on boot camp and parallels??

    Hi all,
I am using a Macbook with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of memory on Mac OS X 10.5.8. I currently have Parallels 5 installed running Windows XP. I need to run Windows off of Boot camp according to the support from the program I am trying to run "Chief Architect X3" as I need to utilize the video card "natively" I believe the word was. Parallels is unable to recognize and use the card properly for this program. So my question is two fold does anyone know if there is a patch that allows Parallels do this? Or can I install Boot Camp on my machine as well with Windows XP so that I can utilize the video card for this program. Do I need to uninstall my Parallels virtual machine? Also programs that are installed via Windows, if I install Boot Camp/Windows and delete my virtual machine/Windows do I need to reinstall those programs? Any and all information is GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Laura

Upgrade to Parallels 6, new build just out. And ask on their forum.
You have to install XP natively first and then enable under a VM to activate properly.
Everything will need to be installed. there are few ways to get a VM to a "native" hard drive partition. And Windows activation is another issue.

  • I put My Boot Camp and Parallels icons inside...

"My Boot Camp Applications" folder. Now I cannot run Parallels in order to run windows without a restart. How do I get the program icons back where they belong?

Just drag the Parallels Desktop icon out of the folder and back to the Applications folder.

  • Boot camp and parallels

I am switching my work laptop to a mac and and wondering if it is better to
1- Just have a parallel desktop
2- Have a boot camp separate installation
3- Have both with the parallel having my boot camp partition as the VM
I am worried that some work programs I have wont work in parallels but also dont want to give up most of my hard drive to windows in boot camp.
    Any info gratefully recieved

Thanks for the reply. I have done some research and some of my work software will not work very well in parallels as it is very heavy on the graphics side. I think i want to intsall xp on a 80GB partition to allow me to run my graphic heavy work stuff.
However for most of my work parallels should be fine. Have a few questions though.
1- Any specific issues with using the boot camp partition in parallel. Will my single XP license work.
2- For all my existing windows files, word excel powerpoint etc, where do I put them, on the windows partition or do i let the parallel decide where?
    thanks

  • What's the difference between Boot Camp and Parallel's Desktop?

Are the same thing or are dofference?
    Which are work better?
    Thanks

your in the wrong topic,I think?
Each one is designed to suit your needs.
Theres a free one called virtualbox witch is like parallels and wmware combined but more to wmware.Read more abot
    and download VirtualBox here:https://www.virtualbox.org/
Parallels is good for gaming. It comes with DirectX 10 support. vmware is better for OS tests, school work, and non-intensive 3D or 2D apps.I use wmware.
    Gaming Ability Story:
If you like to play any games that aren’t available for the Mac, Fusion and Parallels’ ability to accelerate 3D graphics in Windows is a wonderful thing. With these latest releases, Parallels has taken a clear lead on the gaming front. I tested quite a few games and generally saw better graphics and faster frame rates in Parallels than I did in Fusion.
For example, I installed  Simcity 4, a tool, with the same detail and resolution settings in both Parallels and Fusion, Parallels generated 40 frames per second; Fusion could manage only 0 to 11 fps. I got similar results when I tested each virtualization program’s OpenGL speed using Cinebench.
I also tried Simcity 5. Although it installed in both virtualization apps, I could run it only in Parallels, as the game requires DirectX 10. (Fusion supports only DirectX 9.0c.) Not only did it run, it ran quite well. While Parallels' support for DirectX 10 is marked as experimental, it worked fine in my testing.
    Virtual box i didnt test
    Media
Great for both of them. I watched home alone (good movie) on all of the products in a linux VM (including virtualbox) and it worked fine.
Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VMware_Fusion_and_Parallels_Desktop for info. No vituralbox info in there.Serch up "parallels vs vmware vs virtualbox"(no quotes) for that
I am a american and always in a hurry,so if i have bad english sorry.

  • Boot Camp or Parallels?

I'm a new iMac user. I think I might need to run some Windows applications on occasion.
What do you folks suggest: Boot Camp (that came with the OS) or Parallels? Is Parallels worth the $80?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

You have to buy Windows separately. This is the case for both Boot Camp and Parallels. However, you can use the same Windows license and run both Boot Camp and Parallels if you choose.
Parallels is great for convenient casual use. I use it for Quicken, occasional Internet Explorer use, and to run the capture software for my Polar Heart Rate Monitor/Watch. You will probably find that the performance is better than the last Windows machine you used.
If you want to do graphics intensive gaming, where you want every possible processor cycle available for the game, use Boot Camp. I don't do this, so Parallels has been sufficient for me.

  • Possible to use Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on 10.4.1 ?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.1, and I have a number of Mac programs that are not yet compatible with Leopard. I would like to install Boot Camp, but I can't install Leopard until those programs are updated. I have already purchased Leopard (but haven't installed it), so I do have the Leopard disk. (I was asleep at the wheel and didn't download the Boot Camp beta before it was pulled.)
Is it possible for me to use the Leopard disk to install Boot Camp on my 10.4.1 system now, but wait to make the Leopard OS upgrade later?
    Thanks

Ah. There may be other mirrors around.
You may be able to install just Boot Camp Assistant from the Leopard DVD, but I'd be a little suspicious about how well it would work, and whether it would cause other problems. You should certainly be able to use the Leopard DVD instead of burning a drivers CD.
If you can't locate a copy of Tiger BCA, you might want to look at some of the posts that describe doing all of this manually - mostly that's creating a partition that Windows can use. Disk Utility will want to erase the entire drive to add a partition, though, which you may not be willing to do. Some third-party partition utilities claim to be able to do this without a reformat. Regardless of what path you take, be sure you have a good backup of anything not easily reinstalled or restored from other places!

  • Windows 7 Freezes at Restart After Installing Boot Camp Drivers

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro and am having troubles installing 32-Bit Windows 7. All seems to be functional until I install the Boot Camp drivers included on the Install Disk. I have tried using the Boot Camp 3.1 update, but the same problem occurs. After the computer freezes on the install page, I can no longer access Windows (even in Safe Mode) and am forced to restart the entire process (that is, repartition the hard drive and reinstall Windows).
If I don't install the Boot Camp drivers, Windows seems to be functional, so I'm pretty sure it's something in the Boot Camp package causing the trouble.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas or workarounds?

I finally got it to work. You need to go to the NVidia website and install their drivers. I think the Apple supplied ones are out of date and are causing Windows to hang. Install Boot Camp from the supplied DVD, install the update that Apple supplies through the newly installed Boot Camp, and then go to the NVidia website to manually download the drivers. I used the GeForce 300M series installer. Make sure you do all of this before letting Windows restart.
I had a few issues with it hanging a few times, but once I was able to get into Windows it seems to be working. All of the other Apple supplied drivers seem to work.

  • Installing Snow Leopard but also Boot Camp or Parallels

I have a 2006 MacBook (Intel, core duo) and have a 320 gb HD, 2 gb RAM, running 10.5.8.
I'd like to install Snow Leopard but also would like to partition my HD and install Boot Camp (or Parallels 4.x - I have that version, fully paid etc. but not version 5 of Parallels. Or should I move to Parallels 5 if I move to Snow Leopard?)
I have a full bootable backup (2) on FW400 LaCie External HD's. I have the SL Original DVD.
What is the best way to do this? At present I have 60 gb free space (about 20% of the 297 gb formatted total space available).
Thanks for any comments! Oh, yes - I'm anticipating a new MacBook Pro 13" any time now (Thought the new ones would be out by now!) - Well it will come with SL installed; and I will order one with a 500 gb HD (or larger if available then). Can I migrate my current MB data and files to the new MacBook using migration assistant? But what if I want a partition for BootCamp and Windows (XP likely as I have that)--? Should I partition the new MBP HD first (can I partition it without erasing everything?
    Best regards,

Frankly, were you to run Parallels 5 you should have more RAM installed, but your model cannot support more than the 2 GBs you have installed now. You would be better off running Windows via Boot Camp on that machine. However, the new computer will have 4 GBs of RAM installed so it is better suited to running Windows via Parallels. And, yes, if you run Snow Leopard you need Parallels 5.x both for compatibility and performance reasons.
Open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the wide button on the left to print out the documentation. Read it carefully before using Boot Camp Assistant. Yes, you partition the drive without erasing it, but you can only have one Windows and one OS X partition on the same drive. Otherwise it makes no difference when you use Boot Camp.
Your XP must be a retail installer with SP2 and only the 32-bit version. You cannot use an OEM installer that came with another computer.
