Screen goes black randomly

Hi everyone.
I have a very strange issue on 2 different PCs.
From time to time the screen goes completly black, and I have to wait about 2-3 seconds for it to restore the picture.
Both have NVIDIA video card, one PC has GF8900GT the second GF7200.
Both PCs running GNOME
In both PCs the screen is connected via DVI port.
One PC has Arch installed for about 4 months the second has a 3 days old installation.
I also have a laptop with Arch (about 4 months) but I didn't expirience any issues there.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it really annoys me.
I'll be very gratefull if someone points me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.

Hello dhruid,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the screen goes black randomly. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • Macbook 2009 screen going black randomly

My macbook 5,2 circa about autumn 2009 (white plastic) keeps randomly going to black screen whether or not the power cable is plugged in.  I've reset the SMC but no improvement.  It sounds like the fan is running all the time too - and when the screen goes black, it sounds like the whole thing has shut down.  After a short while it appears to wake up again.

This could be a sign of a failing drive. Considering the age of the machine, it's not unexpected. I recommend that you backup your data as a clone to an external drive in case of failure.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual Core Screen Goes Black Randomly But Seems To Still Be Running. I have to Force Quit

I totally just typed way to much info in the title.
In any event, my G5 Dual Core's(late 2005) screen will randomly go black with out notice. Its happend while designing in illistrator and also while browsing google(primarly the use of my comp is graphic design). The fans stay on and it sounds to still be fully running however the screen will not wake up and if i tap the power button it doesnt wake up either. I reset the "PRAM" while booting up, i toggled my screen saver/power saver also so its "never".
I thought the HD was faulty cause it sounds like a light saber at times... I figured the OS was crashing(im ingorant) so I bought a new one and more ram as well. I've installed the HD and am waiting for 10.3 OS to get here in hopes that the new HD and OS will not crash(again that was my educated guess as to what the issue was).
Is it a video card issue? faulty cable you think(VGA to DVI 17" Samsung)?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all feed back along with the patience of a newbie to the forum/community world.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out of it lately, especially the Video card, Power Supply, & RAM areas?

  • Screen goes black constantly, okay with Windows

My mid-2010 21.5" iMac has been having issues for a while now.  The screen goes black randomly.  This happens anywhere from once a week to once every two seconds for days on end.  I've done plenty of research and seen similar problems but no real solutions.
    Symptoms:
Screen goes to sleep.  Shine a flashlight on it, can still see stuff, so it's just the backlight out.
It'll either happen at startup, before the Apple logo, or after using for a while.
Using a hot corner or keyboard shortcut will temporarily wake it up.
If watching video, sound still plays even though screen is black.
Had it in a 60 degree room with A/C blasting on it, no change.
    Tried resetting PRAM, SMU.
Hardware test was fine, but I can't do this when it's not actually working.
    External monitor works fine.
Really weird-  this does not happen with Windows XP.  It runs fine.  So maybe a software problem?  BUT, the problem occurs when booting from Install DVD.  So maybe not a software problem.  I was going to wipe and re-install but can't even do that due to it blacking out.
I've had it in and they replaced the LCD, didn't help.
I wish it would just permanently stop working so it'd be easier to figure out, as it is, the intermittent nature is driving me nuts.  Can anyone please help?

I meant SMC, not "SMU".  Oops.
billkline, thanks for the input, the fact that Windows works has really got me scratching my head.  That's when I went to reinstall OS X but couldn't when it blacked out on the Snow Leopard Install DVD.  Thoroughly confused now.
Also, starting tonight it now hangs on the gray startup screen for thirty seconds before booting up.  This usually is a one or two seconds before getting the Apple logo.

  • Ipod 4 screen goes black

Screen goes black randomly and then returns to the home screen on my iPod touch 4?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 goes black randomly

I purchased a macbook pro late 2008 model on December 30, 2008. Since recently, its screen goes black randomly when the built-in 9400m graphics chip is switched on. During the black screen process, the keyboard still keeps shining. I might wake it up by pressing CtrlShiftEject, but quite often I have to shut it down by holding the power button and restart. I have never encountered the problem when it is working with the 9600M chip, or when it is running window xp.
The screen can go black at any time, when it is booting (the gray screen with the Apple logo), or in the Apple hardware test. I have run Apple Hardware Test for several times, and no errors were found.
Desperately, I brought my laptop to the local apple store, and there I was unable to reproduce the black of death, and I left my computer there for check, after 3 days, they just called me, saying there was nothing wrong with it. But when I take it home, turn it on, only to find that the problem still remains the same.
Could it be the problem with a defected graphic chip? Or is it a problem with the firmware or the OS?
    I really appreciate your assistance.
PS I tried to reset the SMC as it is instructed in Apple Support, but I did not see the led blinking at all, so I did not know whether it worked or not.

i am having the same problem!!! My description is pretty much exactly the same as the orgional posters. now mine have been less frequent, but i recently just expierenced two in a row in about a 3 minute time span. now, mine have never done it at boot up. i dont believe i had this problem with 10.5, and i definitly dont have this problem in windows. now, i have in MOST cases, been able to recover from it by, simply closing the screen for a moment, then reopening it. but i really would like this issue to be resolved. Thanks!

    Hi,
my macbook screen goes black at random points when I am using it. I know it is still running as music continues to play and I can vaguely make out the content of what is on the screen. Sometimes the screen will flicker between black and normal. Can I fix this?

    Emily..
Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test
If the hardware test doesn't reveal any problems, use Lion Recovery.

  • 1st gen ipad screen going black at random times.

Powers back on to the page I was just on.  Have powered on and off completely and am using current OS.  Any ideas?

The fact that the iPad will return to the app that were just using - after the screen goes black - is very odd to me. The apps aren't crashing or you would be returned to the home screen.
    Have you tried a reset/reboot?
Reset/Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro crash - screen goes black

There is a major problem with the mid 2010 Mac Book Pro's and Lion.  I suspect that it is related to the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB video card and perhaps the i7 processor.  The crashes are random and most often occur after a mouse click then the screen suddenly goes black and a restart is forced.  There is a thread on MacRumors that describes many others with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1182104
The crash occurs less frequently when the power and external monitors are connected.  When the MBP is unteathered it crashes every 20 minutes.  I am really surprised and disappointed that a bug this severe made it through final testing. Looking forward to 10.7.1.
    Scott

im so glad im not the only one with this problem. at least i know its not because some careless things i unconciously did that makes my mac gone berzerg like this.
i also encounter the exact same problem with all of you. problems started a month ago. at first it was just once in a while then it became a frequent thing especially when my battery left with 20-30%. then after i plugged in the magsafe, its okay. lately, nothing safes the mac from crashing, particularly when im running adobe and/or autocad. i thought it was software problems so i backed up my files, performed erase and install snow leopard then made an even bigger mistake by upgrading to lion. after finish upgrading, the crashings got even more often. every starting up, after i got a glimpse of login in, pufffttt, screen goes black but keyboard still on. googled it up and say reseting smc will do the trick. eeekkkk nothing! then resetting the pram. worked okay for quite some times then puufffttt, crash! ask a question on yahoo answers and got a help from lovely person to install gfsxcard-something and told to opt for integrated only. worked fine for 2 days and still went back to crashing. opened up the mac, testing each rams, reshuffling em, still got nothing. the only thing that enables me to do my work with this Majestic mac is resetting pram everytime i turn it on.
since im living in singapore (bought this mac june'09 in melbourne, australia), there is no genius bar to be found, running a diagnostic only at any apple service cost me 120 bucks and if i have to change the logicboard, its gonna cost me ard 1000++ dollas since i dont have any applecare and my warranty expired 4mnths ago. so, i might be killing myself soon! yauuzaaaa

  • Screen goes black and I get steady beeps

I have a 2004 HP Pavilion a600n, AMD processor with Window XP SP3 and 1 gb of ram. I have no viruses or spyware due to running McAfee, Malwarebytes, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Advanced System care.
My pc starts fine, but after about an hour, the screen goes black, and I get a series of steady beeps about a second long. There are no short, long beeps. Just steady short beeps and a black screen.
I am forced to shut down via the power button. When I try to restart, the beeping occurs again, and the monitor light remains orange.
I will let my pc sit for a day or two, and I can start it back up, the monitor light is green then, but after an hour, the whole process starts over.
I have no way of knowing if it's ram, video, or fans. My video is built into the motherboard.
I will run PC Doctor and clean the dust out of the fans, etc.
But I do not have a lot of money to just randomly go about replacing parts. Does anyone have any idea what is the  most likely culprit?
Thank you in advance for any help.

I havent had the exact same problem as you but I am having a similar problem where lately I noticed when working in Pro Tools (mainly because I use my mac pro for audio work) or even when on the internet whatever it may be that my screen has been flickering a little bit or gets slightly glitchy.
Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I  totally baffled but the randomness of this.

  • When unplugged, screen goes black

plugged in, the macbook has no problems, but as soon as i unplug it, even with a full battery after about 5 seconds, the screen goes black like the book is going to sleep. i have to hit a few keys (random) to wake it up and the screen eventually comes back up and it makes the sound like it's waking up. but again, after about 5 seconds, the screen goes black again.

You may want to try resetting your System Management Controller (SMC):
+*The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.*+

  • My screen goes black and computer freezes.  I know this is a software based problem.  Any suggestions?

About a month ago I installed an Intego software package on my computer.  After it was installed my computer began to randomly freeze.  The freezing would start with the screen going black and then fans spinning up.  Closing the screen didn't help.  Only rebooting did.  I took my Macbook to a repair service and they said that the hardware was perfectly fine.  They recommended a full wipe and reinstall.  I have since uninstalled Intego and for about a week my computer seemed fine.  Since then, however it has started acting up again.  I'm thinking about doing the wipe and reinstall of ML but am hesistant.  Any suggestions what I can do to avoid that?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • MBP Bad Display? Goes black randomly.

I am having an issue with my Macbook Pro display which I have seen many variants of surfing the intertubes here. The screen goes black more or less at random. I am hoping to avoid having it serviced as my black tie service plan expired last november (bought this at Best Buy.) When the screen is black the computer is still running.
This has been happening intermittently for a while now, and in the past week has rendered my MBP effectively unusable.
Before making any suggestions, please read this list of commonly suggested ideas I've tried which did not solve the issue:
The power saver/display sleep is set to 1 hour, it is not coming on.
The screen saver is set to “never”.
I ran a software update a couple days ago.
Shutting the lid and waking the machine back up doesn’t matter.
F2 (increase screen brightness) doesn’t matter.
Dimming the screen (holding F1 for about 10 seconds) before increasing screen brightness also has no effect.
My external display WORKS, I can shut my lid and use my computer normally with external display, keyboard, and mouse. I believe this rules out the display board issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Holding a LED flashlight up to the screen does not seem to matter. I’ll try again in a darker setting (it’s very bright right now) to rule it out definitively but I don’t think the backlight is affected (you can see a slight glow in the dark.)
    I already reset the PRAM.
    I already reset the SMC.
    I already reset the PMU.
I already attempted the MBP pro video update http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 which said it is not supported on my system (I was pretty sure it wasn't applicable but worth a shot.)
I don't *THINK* it's the inverter cable as wiggling the display lid does not APPEAR to affect it, which leads me to believe the cable is still flexing without a problem.
Doesn't seem like the display is bad as it comes sometimes on and the backlight still works, but I don't know. Since the MBP is no longer under warranty, I am not necessarily opposed to getting under the hood and replacing something as long as I know what to replace. The inverter cable looks easy (ish) but I don't know if that's the answer.
Have I effectively ruled out everything other than the display? Any insight?

Hello, I dont know if might be of help to you. The 17" early MBP had a problem with the onboard Graphics Processor overheating. A fix for this is to have the GPU remounted ( I think the tech term is "reballed") there are a number of companies who can do this for you, you will need to search for a local one to you. I dont know if this was a problem with the 15" version.
    Hope this helps

  • Desktop going black randomly

    hey guys!
I've just installed Arch for the first time on my system so i'm a noob and i have an issue for wich i hope i can get some help on this forum.
    here it is;
while installing arch for dual boot with windows xp my desktop would go black randomly,i think like 5 sec apart, but it installed succesfully.after that i rebooted my pc  same issue after i enter linux my screen goes black the same way.i haven't installed any packages so far except those from the installation cd
i hope i made myself clear.
if someone knows anything  or have some clue it would be highly apreciated.thanks a lot!
p.s i installed it on qemu before and worked ok so....

    Hi and Welcome!
Your screen went black while installing from the Live CD or while booting from it? You can boot now? If the issue happens while booting, can be that your dont have the appropriate drivers for booting in the KMS mode, which I think is the default today on arch.
First, post your video card info here. Is a nvidia, ati? Or a intel...?
Can you boot Windows and verify if that randomly blackness happen too?
You can try our wiki and other threads on this forum. That issue can happen to a lot of users and some old threads have lots of info.
