Screen goes dark on a MacBook Pro

Occasionally the screen goes dark on my MacBook Pro (2009). It is running Mavericks. The computer is still running, just no picture. After restarting it a few times the screen will again be working. Any suggestions?

Help, I was working on my pc partition, using quick books and my machine suddenly freaked out. Screen is dark, backlit keyboard is lit and it is emitting a LOUD humming/buzzing. Hold down the power button and it will shut down. Have you not read the User Guide? (Chapter 4).

MacBook Air Boots to OS, then screen goes dark.

I have recently been working on an older style (A1304) MacBook Air with the 128GB SSD. I've been working on Mac's for years, and have worked on hundreds, but this is the first time I've ever come across this particular issue.
Liquid damaged MacBook Air. Keyboard and Trackpad mainly took the brunt of the spill. Popped off the keys, cleaned it all up. Button for the trackpad no longer works, but everything else does. Entire computer was disassembled, no other liquid was found.
MacBook Air boots up normally, and I was using it for a few hours to make sure everything was working fine. Left it to charge. Came back two hours later, and the screen was dark (but the image was still visible, as if the backlight was not on). Could see the mouse pointer moving, but backlight won't come back on. Turned off computer, turned it back on. Backlight works just fine, and it boots to the OS. Within 10 seconds of booting to OS, the screen goes dark (screen goes completely black with no image). Couple seconds later, light on the front starts to "breathe" indicating it's sleeping. Wake it back up, and image appears on the screen, but no backlight. Then it "goes to sleep" again.
Boot computer to a Flash Drive with Snow Leopard Installer and once the blue screen comes on as if the installer is just about to pop up, it "goes to sleep" immediaetly. Though, the backlight and computer will stay on in the Apple Hardware Test for as long as I want. (ran it several times, "no trouble found". Also reset the PRAM, nothing helps.
I was wondering if anyone has ever come across this. Completely baffled on whether it's a software or hardware (or combination of the both) issue I'm having.

The keyboard and trackpad reside on top of the motherboard and all the components of the computer. The keyboard and trackpad are not liquid proof. It is VERY likely that the liquid made its way to the motherboard and has affected those components. If EVER there is liquid spilled on a computer, the last thing you want to do is A. Turn it on to make sure it is working.. and B. Plug it in and charge it. Do the EXACT opposite. Unplug and turn off all power, and, if possible, remove the battery from it. The liquid itself doesnt do the damage...the damage is done when the liquid comes in contact with the circuits and shorts out the contacts and components. You could try to connect to an external monitor, if you have the means to do so, to see if it makes a difference, but it probably will not. I seems that the motherboard is not functioning correctly.

You have a hardware problem. It needs to be fixed.
Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

Look into iKlear Polish Cleaning. Do a Google search for others. Or call an Apple Store or an AASP & ask for their recommendations as they are "Apple" professionals and should know the best & better products.

Screen Goes Dark During iPhone Sync

This sounds strange and I can't seem to find a logical explanation for this. I noticed that I went I plug my iPhone via USB for iTunes to automatically synch, within seconds the screen goes dark. What I have been doing lately is to rest the phone on top of the MacBook Pro, just left of the trackpad. I have also noticed that if I just place the iPhone elsewhere, rather than laying directly on the MacBook Pro, the problem doesn't happen.

That's where the magnetic sensor for the lid is located. It causes the computer to think that it is closed! Now, an iPhone doesn't have a magnet, except in the speaker, so maybe that's what happens. Our your case has a magnet.

Hi, I have macbook pro 13" and had never experienced this until yesterday and today. The itunes stops playing music, the screen goes dark and it's still charging. Has anyone experienced it?

Boot from you install disc, run Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.

MBP retina: wifi drops out when screen goes dark

Hi there,
I've got a MBPr 15inch with the latest OSX version (incl. updates).
When my screen goes dark after 10 minutes of inactivity, my WIFI connection *always* drops out. So if I'm syncing something over Dropbox for instance, it will stop working. I basically have to make sure my laptop never goes inactive for too long. This is really annoying and one of a few other problems I'm having with this MBPr.
I've searched these forums, and there are people with similar or related problems but I couldn't find any solution yet.
Anyone else out there similar problems?

Hi f, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like it could be a bad inverter board, but I don't know if that would cause it to happen only while using the power adapter. Depending on your exact model, it could be:

I am going to buy a macbook pro 15" but i can't choose between glossy or anti-glare

i am going to buy a macbook pro 15" with the 8gb ram and all that jazz but i can't choose between the glossy or anti glare they both will apply to my daily use but i cannot decide. is it possible to pick lets ay the glossy one then if i dont like it switch to the anti-glare or not ?

You can replace the screen later on, but at a cost.
Best bet would be to go to an apple shop and have a look at the 2 side by side and decide for yourself; if there was 1 that was better than the other, apple wouldn't give you the choice.
p.s. on a personal note I like the glossy one better. nicer picture IMO

I just got to school after getting a new screen put on my 13in macbook pro. when i opend up my macbook there was only a apple simble and the loading sing with a bar at the botton it took fovere to load, one it loaded and opend up there was a few options to pic from saying i could get all my datata back, i got confused and called the tec support where they wanted me to spend 90$ to back up my data, i feel as if they fixed my screen my data should be there when i go on it. Apple has a 90 warranty warranty on all of their repairs. You should take your computer back to the repair shop. Or call Apple Customer Relations (800) 767-2775. Wait for a human to come on the line and ask politely and firmly that you want to be transferred over to the Customer Relations department. Tell them your issue.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.

I backup everything to an external drive and then I restore only what I want from my backup drive. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored/reloaded my music I had to rename all those songs again. It took me about 2 weeks to reorganize my music. How do I get iTunes to remember all of those names and keep everything exactly the same when I restore/reload the music into iTunes?

Just delete stuff you don't want.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine.

When OS X asks you to restore a backup, it will allow you to select what you want to restore from the backup, Just select the things you need, because if you select everything, you will be in the same status as before restoring the Mac to factory settings. This has nothing to do with erasing the hard drive
