Screen goes to zero Brightness

Every time I reboot, my screen automatically goes to zero brightness. I have been having issues with the computer not responding (which I've yet to resolve) but this problem just started happening. Could the two be related? I have an ibook G4 2004 14" screen 256mb 40 g
Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Exdj99,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yes, they could be related, but it's hard to say at the moment. Can you get the screen to lighten up? How do you know the brightness goes to zero instead of the screen not turning on? Can you see the outline of the images on the display? When does your computer not respond? Do you try to start it on the battery, power cord, or both?
You may want to look at/try...

  • Laptop screen going dim to bright

I've just recently noticed that my laptop screen is going from dim to bright every few minutes. It doesn't matter if I have my charger plugged into it or not or if I adjust the brightness myself. It always got back and forth from bright to dim. I have a Satellite S875-S7376 laptop. I've tried to do some research on it here and on the internet before posting this but nothing seems to work with what I have. Any ideas to what this is? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • 40UL605U Screen goes black whenever a bright or high contrast screen is displayed.

I have a 40UL605U that I purchased a while back.  Up until a couple months ago it worked wonderfully with only a few of the issues that I see people have mentioned in reviews and on the forums (wireless connectivity).  In the last couple months, somewhat intermittently, the screen will go completely black any time a bright screen is shown.
When this first started happening, about 5 months ago I'd guess, I thought it was just some artifact of having switched to DirecTV.  After playing with some picture and brightness adjustments it seemed to go away.  To be totally honest I don't remember what I did to make it stop and now I'm led to believe it was just as likely the problem would've gone away even if I hadn't done anything.
Within the last couple weeks the problem has come back and I haven't been able to get rid of it, although I have been able to figure out a couple reasons why it happens.
It seems like any time there's a picture of say, snow with a little animal running around or a bird flying in a clear and bright sky, or explosions or... white screens as backers for cars in commercials the screen goes completely black with audio playing in the background.
It's more annoying than it sounds.
Bringing up the menu seems to make the problem stop, either with the tv's menu or directv's guide which makes me believe it has something to do with the way the television is processing contrast rather than some suggestions that it could be the input.  If I turn the brightness and backlighting up enough to wash out the picture some, it helps make it stop blacking out... at the sacrifice of the picture, which is kind of the point of having the tv.
Also, I found that pausing a recording from a dvr when a picture would normally black out allowed me to adjust the settings until I find a spot where the tv will show the picture with sections flickering rather than completely going black.  Changing settings like brightness or backlighting, contrast ratio or playing with the clearview features make the picture go black again.  It should be noted that changing these setting either up or down could make the picture go out and as of right now I haven't figured out exactly what settings work best while retaining a decent picture.
It happens under HDMI which I use for both DircTV, Xbox and Netflix through the wireless adaptor.  I haven't tested it on my computer, but I'll try to tomorrow after work and update if there's any difference.
For the record, the tv's been great up until now and my mom's toshiba projection tv's been working for almost 12 years now.  Just a shame to have to get a new tv when this one was just getting settled in.
Any help or input would be appreciated.  Thanks.

It doesn't sound like there's going to be a simple fix that you could do yourself. If you haven't yet, try cycling the power by unplugging it, leaving it for a minute, and then reconnecting it.
If that doesn't help, try resetting the settings. Press the MENU button and open "Setup." Select "Installation." Open "System Status" and select "System Information." Select "Factory Defaults." Finally, select "Yes."
If that doesn't help either, your TV likely needs servicing.

The screen on my macbook has malfunction. When I change the brightness to zero and return to the first level of brightness it works briefly but then the screen starts to flicker brightness and quickly extinguished. It seems to be a bad contact, it would not be normal for a quality product that should have, he has less than two years of use. Not because of the bad use or crash. Someone with the same problem or can help me? It's really a contact problem? I've done all the procedures recommended by the online support. Thanks.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Screen goes from dim to bright? WHY?

my screen goes dim ..not really black but goes dim back and forth...why is this? i thought it was something related to the screen going dim before it sleeps but i noticed non of the boxes were checked. and as im writing this the screen goes dim and back to bright

    Hiya HOR,
no problem. The only thing you could perhaps try is (in system preferences/ displays) to adjust the brightness settings and see if that makes a difference.
Now, I must say that my (2006) macbook's screen is totally illegible in bright sunlight, even when changed to ignore the energy saver settings when on battery (i.e. best performance, rather than best battery efficiency). This did make the screen brighter for general use.
I was under the impression that yours flickers in response to activity (e.g. quick scrolling on browser); but now that you have described it, I think, the answer might be in system preferences. Good luck.

Every time I take the Mini Display Port out, my screen goes black! The computer is still on and running, and I can adjust the brightness, but I can't see anything! I have to put the Mini-Display Port back in for the screen to come back. Have tried restarting, and the white screen with Apple logo comes up, then just blackness!!! Until of course I put the Mini Display Port back in!!!

  • When ever i go to watch videos on youtube or any other apps, the screen goes black. you can hear the video but you cant see anything. how do i fix this?

i have an ipod tough 3g and its like about 4 to 5 years old it works perfectly fine except the home button is abit messed up and the ipod sometimes crashes. but other than that everything is fine. so i was watching something on an app and then al of a sudden i dont see the video i can just hear it. i then think its just the app but when i go on youtube the same exact thing happens. you click to watch a video and you can hear it perfectly but you cant see anything. the screen is just black when u ONLY watch a video. this happened last night so yea.i really hope somebody can help me figure out how to fix this and whats wrongwith it:)

When it goes black do a very short press of the button on the right upper side of the phone and the screen will reappear.  Make it a very short quick press.
OTOH, if you are using the speaker so you can watch the screen as you are talking when it goes dim touch the screen anywhere that it is blank and it will again go bright.  On long calls you have to repeat this.
Many folks have had the same problem you described and what I have told you is the best and ONLY way around the screen going blank during a call.

  • Screen Goes Blank, Hard Drive Stuck, Cannot Re-Install, or recover

I have somewhat a bizzar problem that even with several years of IT experience I seam not to be able to figure it out. I thought I toss it our here at Toshiba community in hopes of people's collective experience shedding some lights on my problem.
I hava a 3 year old Toshiba Sattellite A305D with updated BIOS to version 2.10. It came with Windows Vista Home 32bit and I had upgraded it to Windows 7 64-bit last Christmas. It was working fine till last month that I started getting sporadic blank screens. Here is the symptome with details: screen goes blank, backlight it on, but there is no content on screen. At this time the Hard Disk Drive activity light is steady lit. Initially the problem happened intermitently and sometimes it fixed itself after few minutes and screen would come back on, but when it started to happen more often, I started to look for some troubleshooting. Some people suggested that blank screen could be due to bad lid close button being stuck or Windows power management's CPU power being set to 5%. I have tried cleaning the lid button and fixing power management but no luck. Then, I tried re-installing Windows from DVD, screen never went blank till after the first few steps of setup to the point that it says "Extracting Windows Files". At this time I started to think this is a hardware issue. I took out the RAM, I installed it on my MacBook Pro and used it for few days, and I had no problem. I even diagnosed them with Windows Memory Checker in the list of Recovery Options and no problem was detected. So, the next suspecious thing was the video card or display inverter. I tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor to test the screen's inverter, and same thing happened and external monitor went blank. I used Windows Recovery options and left it on that screen over night and nothing happened so I concluded the video card is fine. Next, I had turned off the Wifi and Lan, but nothing seamed to change, so I concluded those are OK as well. My last coclusion was that the hard drive is bad. I took the drive out and coonected it to my Desktop PC and ran disk utiility scan to check for bad sectors and none was detected. So, I thought the drive might be totally broken. I went to local electronics store and bought a brand new HITACHI SATA II drive and installed it. At first same thing happened so I gave up. Since I didn't have the recovery disks, I ordered recovery disks from Toshiba and tried that. Save thing happend and as soon as it started copying files, it blanked out. OK. So this time I ran a different recovery option and formatted the entire hard disk and zeroed out all sectors. That took approximately 3 days to finish for a 500GB brand new hard drive. Seams a long time. After that I could install Windows 7 64-bit from scratch up to the end. However, things got gorry again when I started installing Updates and driver packages. I had read about some problems with ATI drivers and Catalyst software with .NET updates, so I did not install any driver from update site and made sure all .NET updates are installed. I had to install the updates slowly chosing a few at a time. Otherwise same thing would happen. I got stuck to the point that I could not update anything. Windows files seamed to be corrupt and turning on/off Windows Features in controll panel was blank, so I had to re-install again. I did Re-install successfully using the upgrade option. This time I installed .NET updates first before any other updates. Then I started downloading all Toshiba drivers. Aazingly, the laptop worked for few ours without the symptom. I managed to install most of the drivers and updates including Value Added Package, HDD/DVD Rom Patch, Registry Patch, Sound, Modem, Atheros Wireless, and Catalyst. Up till now things were ok. Then I ran Toshiba Hardware update patch, and things got really messed up. Windows never booted again and symptoms showed right after boot tried to load WIndows. I tried recovery options but System restore kept getting errors too and I could not restore any more. Since Windows 7 Install and Windows Vistal recovery to Factory Default from recovery disk did not work, I thought maybe I should try Windows XP. So, I got a hold of my old Windows XP CD-ROM and I took a stab at it. Everything went fine till it started to copy windows files. This time symptom was different. I got one of those XP Blue Screen of deaths saying Hard Drive is bad and I must run chdsk /F. So, I concluded HDD is the problem. Ran CHDSK and no problem. I formated the drive again using DISKPART and the problem still exists. This is a brand new hard drive. What is the problem?

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop. "A305D" is only partial.
That's quite the problem. How often was it doing this? At some steps in your diagnosing, it seemed to get better, but I wonder if it was actually (temporarily) fixed, or if it didn't occur by chance.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. Normally I'd suggest you get it serviced, but then you'd also be throwing more money at a three year old notebook when clearly you're knowledgeable yourself.
Hopefully someone in the community will have some suggestions. I have noticed that some people shy away from posts with large paragraphs of text. (I'm not saying that's correct, but it happens.) I'd suggest putting some bullet points at the top summarizing. If you feel like doing that, you can edit your message.
    Good luck!

  • My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs or so, then the machine shuts down and restarts.

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
    Any help is appreciated.

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

Imac 27" Intel Core7  CPU 16 Gig RAM. Screen goes black and will not respond except with a push of power button. Second monitor connected via displayport continues to display fine. Apply Store did full hardware diagnostic and all is fine. Did clean wipe from Mavrick back to Mountain Lion but problem remains. Apple Store can do no more.

I did some more digging, it appears to be a backlight problem only. I can see the screen very dimly if I use a bright flashlight in a very dark room. It also seems to run ok if the brightness is turned down a LOT.
So I'm thinking this is a LED driver board issue or the display itself. I'll open it up and check the connection between the two and see if I can get any more clues. At least I can use it somewhat now by dimming the display significantly...

  • Help! screen goes dim, just the editing window

Hi there, I am running photoshop cs4 extended on windows 7 on  hp. once in a while my screen goes dim making editing difficult. My monitor is profiled and is fine. the only thing dim is the images on my first screen. I run two screens, when I pull PS over to  my other monitor it brightens up. So Its not in my file, and it isn't affecting photoshops menu bars or anything like that, and its only intermitent. the first screen is the profiled one as it  is much higher quality, the second screeen is only for tools and web browsing. In have checked  a lot of things and have no idea what causes this or any solution, any advice would be great.

Cannot possibly be, as for one it is a desktop computer that has no power management, and two the menu bars, tools and everything else stays the same brightness, it is only the editing window itself.
Thank you for trying, it is appreciated.
