Screen going black software issue
Have a mac not pro and have just developed a black screen, is there a software fix solution. Mac just out of warranty. Thanks.
Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe

Issue with Macbook Pro (early 2011) screen going black.
I installed an SSD with Mt Lion. Periodically the screen goes black like it's going to sleep. It hasn't done this in the past just noticed it the last few weeks.
The SSD is a Crucial with 8GB of Crucial memory. I've got all the software fixes up to date. Has anyone else seen this. I've read a few postings, one mentioned issues with Mt. Lion and another with a logic board in the laptop.Well, seem like there's already ton of thread related to this issue ...

About a month ago I installed an Intego software package on my computer. After it was installed my computer began to randomly freeze. The freezing would start with the screen going black and then fans spinning up. Closing the screen didn't help. Only rebooting did. I took my Macbook to a repair service and they said that the hardware was perfectly fine. They recommended a full wipe and reinstall. I have since uninstalled Intego and for about a week my computer seemed fine. Since then, however it has started acting up again. I'm thinking about doing the wipe and reinstall of ML but am hesistant. Any suggestions what I can do to avoid that?
Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
All the best,

This problem with screen going black is a recurring issue, apple us troubleshooter this with me and replaced my phone already for the same issue, new phone doing same thing. Is this a problem for others also?
Settings > General > Lock/Unlock > set to OFF (for your screen blackouts)

when using apple tv with my ipad, the mirroring function does not work, screen goes black, what is the issue? My son's Ipad(same as kind as mine) works ok with the apple tv but mine does not. Any suggestions?
Hello Nina Izurin,
While written for the iPhone, the troubleshooting below can help resolve issues with your iPad's camera, as well.
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

I have a MacBook 13 (model A1181, 2.16 GHz) that I bought from a friend. Everything starts up fine, I get the chime, etc., until it loads the OS. I have a brand new Apple hard drive; brand new Mac OS X Leopard disk; and have tried everything I can think of. I have tried shining a light to see if the screen is just dim--no dice. I have tried completely wiping the drive clean on my iMac and then reinstalling. It gets all the way through the install, then the screen goes black when I'm trying to set my information up. The screen stays up if it's installing the OS, and also if I have the hard drive disconnected on the logic board. As soon as I load the OS, it goes black. The rest of the machine is still running. I have a spare logic board, so I put that in and I get the same problem. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated. It may be useful to know that I am a computer repair technician (I do component repairs at a motherboard/logic board level). However, I believe all the hardware to be working. I think it may be a firmware issue, but I can't get it to keep a screen long enough to do any software updates. Anyone have any suggestions?
I actually considered that and replaced the inverter, as I couldn't find the cord to external display, but also to no avail. Same thing happened.

Screen goes black constantly, okay with Windows
My mid-2010 21.5" iMac has been having issues for a while now. The screen goes black randomly. This happens anywhere from once a week to once every two seconds for days on end. I've done plenty of research and seen similar problems but no real solutions.
Symptoms:
Screen goes to sleep. Shine a flashlight on it, can still see stuff, so it's just the backlight out.
It'll either happen at startup, before the Apple logo, or after using for a while.
Using a hot corner or keyboard shortcut will temporarily wake it up.
If watching video, sound still plays even though screen is black.
Had it in a 60 degree room with A/C blasting on it, no change.
Tried resetting PRAM, SMU.
Hardware test was fine, but I can't do this when it's not actually working.
External monitor works fine.
Really weird- this does not happen with Windows XP. It runs fine. So maybe a software problem? BUT, the problem occurs when booting from Install DVD. So maybe not a software problem. I was going to wipe and re-install but can't even do that due to it blacking out.
I've had it in and they replaced the LCD, didn't help.
I wish it would just permanently stop working so it'd be easier to figure out, as it is, the intermittent nature is driving me nuts. Can anyone please help?I meant SMC, not "SMU". Oops.
billkline, thanks for the input, the fact that Windows works has really got me scratching my head. That's when I went to reinstall OS X but couldn't when it blacked out on the Snow Leopard Install DVD. Thoroughly confused now.
Also, starting tonight it now hangs on the gray startup screen for thirty seconds before booting up. This usually is a one or two seconds before getting the Apple logo. -
PB screen goes black when TV is plugged in
I occasionally plug my PB G4 12" into the TV using the Video Adapter. This used to work fine - the desktop would span both TV and PB screen, just as it does when I have my external monitor plugged in.
But when I upgraded to Leopard this stopped working - when I plug the TV in, the PB screen goes black 90% of the time. And when I unplug the TV the PB screen stays black - I always have to shut the laptop down while the TV is plugged in and start it up once the TV is unplugged. But the PB still works fine when I plug an external monitor in.
Any ideas how to make this work again? Thanks.Hi MrEleffe,

Screen goes black when time is announced
When the time is announced (or even tested) the screen goes black and does in most cases come back after shutting off and starting up again.
Other applications, which "speak" to me have no problem.
So it has to be the speech sythesizer of the clock. OR??
Bet no one ever heard of this before.
Can someone help please.

Yesterday upon startup for the first time the screen went black. Had to do a force shutdown. Unplugged all external devices. Reset everything as well. Slowly checked everything was on the phone with Apple even during the process. Seemed to correct the issue. Then of course I get off the phone, restarted my computer and it goes black randomly again.
Rebooted fine. Checked all my hard disks internal and external, verified and repaired permissions on main drive and clone. Since then nothing yet...But I still feel its either the Video Card or the Monitor as everything else is fully operational.
I plan on taking it in to look at as my applecare is up in November but I cant point my finger on it. And really am trying to avoid lugging the mac pro and monitor in at the same time...(Not the easiest thing with lack of parking in nyc..)
If the display was dying I feel like it would have konked out already.
The funny thing is I have had to replace video cards and monitors in the past but this time I cant quite figure out what the **** is going on.
I am leaning towards the video card as I noticed it flickered a little when opening plug in windows in pro tools or multiple windows in sfari but it doesnt make sense.
Worst part is I cant do a hardware test cause for some reason this computer doesnt have the software installed. It does nothing when I hold down the D button...
I totally baffled but the randomness of this. -
Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice. Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:
G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM. -
Screen goes black for no reason
Hi first post, My iMac intel seems to shut down intermittently, when it happens the screen goes black but you can still hear the fans running the white light is not on and there is no response from the keys or mouse so I have to hold the power button to turn it off.
Then when I turn it back on again you hear the fans start up, the light stays on and the screen stays black and would stay like that for life if I left it.
If I start it up 2-3 min after I have shut it down, it starts fine and will be ok for 5 min and then process happens again.
This can happen alot and some times will happen after 5 days of being ok and working perfectly.
Very frustrating! anyone els with this problem?
iMac intel 20" Mac OS X (10.4.8)There have been similar reports. Usually they needed to take it for a repair that was covered under warranty.
I suggest you plan for the worst and back up everything of critical importance. Call Apple for support, but do be prepared to erase your hard drive and reinstall your OS. If the problem then persists before you add any additional software or connect any other hardware, you've proven it's some hardware issue and can have Apple immediately fix it under warranty with no other effort on your part. Best of luck.

IPhone 3G screen goes black in Safari, SMS and Mail (sensor not covered!)
This my second 3G iPhone. I took the last one in for the same issue.
I did not use the back-up in iTunes in case there was a corrupt preference issue.
I did upgrade/reinstall and there are still issues.
The screen goes black as if I have locked the phone with the on/off button.
To get back into the phone I have to hit the on/off button twice, slide the slider and continue where I left off.
This is not because I haven't touched the phone for a time. This is right in the middle of typing in SMS, email, password on a website. It seems to happen when i am interacting with a site using the keyboard but i might be wrong.
I am going to update to the firmware that came out today.I am having the same problem and have since I did the software update. I have the old iPhone is the only difference. It just goes black right in the middle of a text or surfing the web, even changing settings. I have also had a problem when done with a call and i go to hit end call but the screen never comes back to give me that option. I have had a few instances lately where someone calls and i slide the slider to pick it up and it just goes black but still vibrates and rings....its very very annoying.
Anyone know what is going on? -
The screen goes black 2 or 3 secs after lifting the lid, but comes back on if I disconnect the magnetic power lead, after that it works fine with or without lead. Anyone had this problem, and is it symptomatic of a serious fault?
It could be a software issue. I would reinstall the OS. You don't have to lose or reinstall any apps from archive and install. This way, your user folder remains intact but you get a fresh copy of the OS.

Screen Goes Black Periodically
On the 24th of this month, I got the Thunderbolt Software Update (version 1.0), the Security Update 2011-05 (version 1.0), and the MacBook Pro EFI Software Update (version 2.2). Ever since I got these updates, my screen has been going black about every 10 minutes even when I'm using it. The only way to fix it is to turn it off manually by holding down the power button. Now it has started happening right after the apple screen goes away when I turn the laptop on.
Is the screen going black because of these updates or is it something else?I don't Apple Hardware test will you if you have a problem with the display. The ARS and Service provider does have a tool for testing displays. Have you tried resetting the PRAM? do follow the steps here and see if it helps y0u with your issue
