Screen gone garbled

My screen went garbled, blue and green blotchy with only just able to see the buttons for force quit (one program had cancelled restart)
Is this the graphics card, the screen (20"LCD Apple), or the Mac?
Thanks

Simon,
I am having similar problems as can be seen in my thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=533412&tstart=15
I have been told by MacLover and another very qualified Mac owner that it's very unlikely that the Mac could be at fault (i.e. the logic board or processors causing the screen to appear different shades) and my G5 Quad is in the shop right now. Funny thing was the service tech told me that it could very well be the logic board so go figure? Have you tried a different monitor to see if it happens on there as well? I have been told to check a different monitor (which I did with the same output) and to swap the video card (if you have one) out to see if that solves it. I think both of those options have been mentioned by other posters to your thread. Also, have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mac? It should give you some idea if the video card has issues. Although I could never get past the logic board test on mine due to it hanging on the logic board test and freezing. I guess in that order if you check it with another monitor with the same results it's not the monitor. If you have a swap video card you can try and that doesn't help it "may" very well be something in the Mac. I am no expert but with all this I am learning fast! I feel like the guy that stayed in that hotel chain overnight and now is a Mac repairman! Oh, and there was also a mention of trying a different monitor cable to rule that out as well. I'll let you know how mine fairs out when it comes back and maybe be of more help there.
Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Pro 17inch - mid-2010 - screen graphics garbled

So my screen goes garbled and I have to either turn it off and back on OR (strangely enough) drag one of the application windows around the screen like a dry eraser on a white board - for a while, there's a graphic echo, creating a cool pattern of images of the app window all over the screen, then it eventually starts to act like a dry eraser, cleaning off the 'echoes' and causing the screen to appear as normal.
So I've seen this discussion before and seen people offer a variety of solutions. Some say it's hardware, and suggest replacing the NVIDIA card, others say try command+option+p+r. Some say it's RAM - I've noticed it does occur more often when my RAM useage is peaking (whilst watching the Activity monitor), but it doesn't always happen like that! I have 8Gb of RAM installed, so not sure how it can happen - anything more than 5 or 6 tabs open on Safari PLUS having Skype open, and the system goes crazy! Whilst the machine is registering 8GB, could it be possible one or both of the 4 GB cards are corrupt?
I've had the logic board replaced, and the screen replaced. Haven't tried replacing the NVidia card yet.
Have used Apple for ages but not really a techie, so not sure what info to provide to you awesome tech-heads. I"ve attached some screen-captures ...
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is strange indeed. Yes, RAM could be at issue. If this is not the original RAM, install it. If it is, remove one module, try running; switch that same module to the other slot, try running; repeat with other module.
The GPU cannot be replaced. It's soldered onto the logic board; thus, if you've had you logic board replaced, the GPU was replaced.

  • Restart unsuccessful and screen gone back after software updated

I just got my iMac back from the store for hard drvie replacement programme. When I back home, I used the original OS install DVD to start up my computer, all went smoothly till the software update check, I tried to updated the software and restart the computer as per request, but the screen gone black and my computer never can start up again. What's going wrong? Can anyone help?

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Installed updated ios7.1.1. Favorites screen gone, can't create Favorites.

Installed ios7.1.1. Now Favorites screen gone; cannot create new favorites. What will activate favorites capability?

Try clearing Safari, then close it completely and reset your iPad.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data.
In order to close Safari, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Why has my iMac screen gone to stripes. I am using Yosomite

why has my iMac screen gone to stripes and nothing else. I am using Yosemite

Could be the card or the screen.
    Courtesy BDAqua:
Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.
If your screenshot isn't showing the stripes here, it will most likely mean the screen, LCD panel, is the problem.

  • XPS One 2720, screen gone black?

    Hi,
I got Dell all in one XPS 2720 last July, 2014. It has been working fine so far only once the touch screen lost and regained once I sort it out the issue with USB. I have not connect this computer to internet for the last 3 months. Today I connected it to internet after one hour the computer screen gone black not responding to any touch function, It also does not respond to any keyboard touch. I tried to read the "me and my dell" instruction, nothing seems work. anybody has some advise.

Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the XPS One 2720. Press and hold in the power button for 15 seconds. Reconnect the power cord. Press the power button.
    Are there any beep codes?
    Look at the power button:
Solid amber = The computer has detected an error during power on self-test
Breathing amber = The computer is in sleep/standby state or There is a possibility of system facing an issue
Solid white = The computer is ON
Off = The computer is off or in hibernate state

  • Help--why has MacBook screen gone dark and how do I get it back?

I have a  MacBook (model 4,1  running OS 6.8).  I use the MacBook as my desktop computer in conjunction with a separate desktop monitor. Today, when I unplugged a USB hub from one of the ports (after carefully ejecting anything on the desktop that needed to be ejected before unplugging), the screen on the MacBook--not the separate monitor--suddenly went dark.  I thought it had gone to sleep or into screensaver mode, but noticed that the white light on the MacBook also wasn't showing.
The separate monitor display (on which I'm typing this message) seems fine.  I checked DIsplays/Arrangement in System Preferences, but both displays were detected in their usual arrangement, though I did notice that the working display has a white bar across the top but the MacBook display doesn't have one.  I clicked "Detect Displays," but that didn't change anything.
I then did a restart, and things seemed to go as usual:  the shutdown went okay and on restart, the white light went on on the MacBook and the monitor screen lit up normally.  However, the MacBook's screen is still dark and the white light is off.
Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to get my MacBook screen back?  I don't know whether unplugging the hub caused the problem or whether it was just a coincidence that something that runs the MacBook display happened to fail right then.  Would appreciate any help out there very much--thanks!
PS: Just tried shutting down and powering on again with the separate monitor unplugged, but the MacBook screen still stays black and the white light shuts off as soon as the desktop loads.  When I plugged the separate monitor back in, it worked fine.  So the problem doesn't seem to be a conflict with the separate monitor (which I've used for years).

Update:  I went away for an hour, and when I came back I saw that the white light had gone on as usual when the MacBook went to sleep.  When I touched the keyboard, both displays went on; however, the MacBook display went dark immediately and the white light is still out.

  • Screen display garbled when downloading a file

In FF 5 I often get a garbled screen display when dowloading a file (by garbled I mean that the display is broken into numerous rectangles; the display appears to be similar to that of a driver/monitor/card not being compatible). The display will sometimes correct itself if I minimize and then maximize FF, but not always.
The problem does not occur in IE, Opera, Safari, Chrome, nor in any other program.
Could a plugin possibly be the cause? I can work around the problem simply by not using FF for downloads, but I wanted to pass along the information if it might be a bug in FF5.
    Here is a screenshot: http://firstimpressions.websitedesigningamarillo.com/firefoxscreenshotcropped.jpg

Thanks for the info! Yea, I thought my video card was dying when I first saw it. The driver is the latest, and everything else looks ok too.
Over the past couple of hours I disabled all plug-ins and extensions, and still had the problem. I chose to down-grade to verison 4 which now works fine. Version 3 was also a good choice but I use the HTML validator that requires version 4 (world's absolute best add-on ever for my use).
I'm guessing that my video card isn't playing nice with FF5, so until I upgrade the card I will stick with FF4. I installed a new theme and now I'm happier than ever with FF. :)
