Play your DVD with VLC and you will be able to take a screen shot.

does anyone know of a shareware or freeware utility that will allow me to take pictures of the DVD screen when using DVD Player 4.6.5? If I use shift-apple-3, I get an error stating screen grabs are not allowed DVD player.

    This should do it.

  • I can't take screen shots of dvds

i've tried with both 'preview' and 'grab' applications, as well as with every keyboard shortcut to take screen captures from dvds that i'm watching, and every time the capture is blank. does anyone know whats up with this? any help is appreciated. thanks.

There are programs out there that will do what you want. Realize that commercial DVD's are copy protected and Apple programs respect that.

  • Screen shots from DVDs

How can I take a screen shot from commercial DVDs? "Grab" doesn't work. I think something can be done in "terminal", but I don't know what. Can anyone tell me?

Do you mean you're trying to get a screen shot from a movie playing from a DVD? If so, download the VLC Media Player. It will allow screen grabs during playback.

  • Screen Grabs/stills

How do you make stills/screen grabs of your footage. I need images to create a dvd cover

  • Screen shots from dvd

This is my first time posting with this and I am a relatively new user to macs to I am not too sure what I am doing.
I put a DVD into the side of the computer and clicked the DVD player that popped up. It is not iDVD but I could not find a discussion board for a regular DVD player. When I play the DVD it wokrs fine. I have it paused and I am trying to get a screen shot of the paused DVD screen.
With the screen in full screen I hhit appleshift3. I am doing this trying to get a full screen shot. However, I get the error message that "screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback. Please quit dvd player first."
Does anyone know what I should do to get a screen shot of the dvd? Any help would really be appreciated!

    Welcome to discussions!
Your best bet is to ask this question in the iMac forum (Click on this link and then scroll down to where is says something about using DVDs and CDs with your Mac)

PS You can't take a screen shot when the DVD player is on because of copyright rules...however, you can purchase third party software that probably will.

  • Doing grabs from dvd player

I've only just started learning how to use the Grab function.
Is it possible to do a grab from a movie I am playing on the dvd player?
A salesman at the local Apple store told me it's doable,
but when I tried just now, a window popped up
and said that 'Screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback,'
and to 'Quit DVD player first.'

    Hi Eustaquio Villafranca,
As far as I know it is not possible and you will need to use a third party app to accomplish it. Have a look at this topic with its accompaning link for a list of applications that are compatible with your OS.

  • Screen shots of DVD movies ?

I like to keep still images of movies I have to a database of mine. With any software it's no
problem but with DVD Player (Mac OSX) I cannot do that, DVD Player does not allow users
to do screen shots while DVD Player is active.
I bought the DVD movie not to mention the fact that its my computer and I'd like to do
whatever I want with it. I fail to comprehend how doing a screen shot (image at 72 dpi...) of
a movie constitutes a major criminal act...
    Please enlighten me......
Is there any way of going around this ?
    Thanks

I fail to comprehend how doing a screen shot (image at 72 dpi...) of
a movie constitutes a major criminal act...
It's not major, and it will result more in civil action than criminal.
I cannot, based on the terms of use of this forum, tell you how someone using VLC or another movie-playing application could use Movie2Shot or some other kind of screen-grab software to commit these civil violations, so please don't ask me to.

  • IMac going slow & screen grabs

    Hi All
I was just wondering if anyone can help me here. My iMac has suddenly decided to run slowly when I'm using certain applications. It's as though it's stopping to think about the command I use and when I quit the Application it takes about 30 secs to do so - any ideas? I thought I had a virus but I believe they're rare, but a few weeks ago I ran Apple's own disk doctor and it said it couldn't run it as something else was using the disk.
Applications used are Quark 5, Adobe Photoshop 7 and Image Ready. The internet seems unaffected, besides freezing quite often. I'm wondering if running Norton on it a few months back has thrown everything out of whack!
I think that's it... thanks in advance.
One other thing - does anyone know how to make good resolution screen grabs? I tried DVD Capture in OSX but they're blurry and on OS 9 I use DVD Extractor and get them from there.

You might have more luck in the OS9 Forum.
    Cheers!

  • How to highlight text in a screen grab?

I did a screen grab from imdb (Internet Movie DataBase) off the Internet.  It's currently in .png format.
I want to highlight part of the text in the text in this picture as if I were using a yellow highlighter marker.  I've tried everything I can think of but so far no dice.
It seems that the thing to do is to choose Tools > Mark Up, but Mark Up is grayed out.
I know this is possible because a guy I work with does it all the time.  But it's too late to call him, and he's fairly irrascible anyway.  And I know I did it once a while ago.
    Can someone help?  Thanks.

I'd never used Grab before, so just did so. It's an awfully simple app, it seems - offers some capture controls the keyboard commands don't (such as timed and full window), but doesn't seem to be able to do anything other than capture an image. Its Preferences are bare-bones.
I had to open my test image in Preview to make any annotations. That was easy - save the image in Grab to the desktop and name it, then a double-click of the file opened it in Preview.
    So, we're back to Preview.
Don't understand why the annotation tools aren't available to you in Preview.
    Edit - -
Just rebooted into Snow Leopard to do some testing. No matter what I tried, new screenshot using keyboard or Grab, fiddling with settings, I could not get Preview to not allow selecting the Rectangle tool.
Only other thing I can think of - do a Get Info on the screenshot file, check the permsissions at the bottom of the Get Info window.

  • How to post a screen-grab on here

    Hello,
I have a question that requires me to place a screen grab on here to best describe my problem, how do you do this?

  • Using avi files with DVpal. Working with screen grab footage.

    Hi.
I am currently editing some short little promo's that mix DVpal footage with .avi footage. The .avi footage are screen grabs of someone navigating a website, and are designed as cutaways to illustrate a ptc.
However when they are rendered out on the timeline, the text from the website that is in the screen grab video becomes too distorted/(rasterized i think), essentially unreadable. I was planning on some degradation, but didn't realize it would destroy the image so much.
I have tried exporting/converting the .avi files to certain .mov formats but all with essentially the same problem.
Does anybody know a work around solution to help solve this problem. Or is the best way to redo the screen grabs as .movs with the relevant settings, and can anyone recommend some software for this job.

I think the problem is more based in the fact that you're working in DV. Can you work in a higher quality format?

  • IPhoto adds ugly black border around imported screen grabs

When I grab a picture of an application screen (using cmd + shift + 4 and then hitting the space bar over the application), I get a screen grab that opens fine in Preview, but when I drag/import it to iPhoto, it adds an ugly thick black border around the whole picture. Why? Is there any way to stop this from happening?

    Old Toad wrote:
Missed the Command....... I have used that command and don't get the border except when viewing the file as an thumbnail in the Finder.
Do you have a MMe account? If so upload the screenshot file to the Pictures folder and use the following code to add it to a post:
You'll get this: Click to View Photo. It's a screenshot of the screenshot and it's presentation in Safari.
So, I can see immediately from the photo in the link above that you have not used the key combi I am talking about - was that intentional?
Anyway, here's the link, and you can quite clearly see the drop shadow.

  • Problems with Window Screen Grabs?

    Hey,
Any idea what the problem could be? When I screen grab a fullscreen window by typing "Command > Shift > 4 > Space" the resulting screenshot has the right hand edge cut off. Seems to happen in all apps. It only happens when an app window is full screen or maximized (or a little smaller - about 20px on each edge). Using Grab or Preview to capture works but those apps don't capture the alpha-blended window shadow.

I'm able to reproduce the issue as well with images at full, or near full, screen.
My guess is that OS X will only take screenshots as large as the screen resolution, and when capturing the window shadow it is adding ~30 px to the outside of the image, thus pushing it off the edge.

  • Is there a way to make high res screen grabs

i often use the shift apple 4 key board shortcut to make selected screen grabs, although I was wondering is there a way to make screen grabs a higher resolution than the standard 72dpi?

You can't increase the resolution of an image except in printing. If you print at a smaller size the you'll be squeezing more pixels in a smaller area thus increasing the dpi resolution of the print. But you can increase the resolution of the image file generated by the screenshot. Well, you can with Photoshop by resampling but it's never as good as the original. Screenshots are 72 dpi (or whatever the screen is - some at 92 or so) with the pixel dimensions as displayed on the screen.
