Screen is dead!

I just replaced my 40GB iPod with a 160GB Classic iPod at the end of September and this morning when I grabbed it for my walk to work the screen didn't come on. I can stop and start the music but I can't see anything!
Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone know if there's a fix for it (maybe it's some software glitch)? Does anyone know if Apple will replace or repair it for free (I did not by the extended warranty)?

Well, a coworker suggested I reboot the iPod (center button + menu) and that seemed to get the screen working again. Now I'm just worried that what happened today is a tale of things to come.

  • Old MacBook Pro's screen is dead...

Hey! My old Mac Book Pro's screen is dead (black). Even though the device reacts to the switch-on/off button, the screen stays as it is (black). What should I do?
Note that its battery is also dead and I can work only when my old pal is plugged in…
    Thanks & Cheers from Greece!

marcialovessteveWill these cracks continue? Why is it happening?
Who knows why unless it is a manufacturing fault.  Will it continue- most likely.

  • Hey guys, my screen is dead. How do I get a new one?

I looked on eBay and found a bunch of displays, but there are so many, I don't know which one to get!
so I need a little help identifying my mac or the part number, if possible. I think it's a Macbook l,l.

Re: Hey guys, my screen is dead. How do I get a new one?
You buy one and install it or you pay an installer to do it.

Are you confident (in that case) that you can do the repair yourself? Perhaps you should let a professional select a screen and install it for you.
Laptop parts all have a part number - you should start there. Here is a typical part number location: http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions_en,macbook,diagram3.shtml
Try speaking to a repair shop like techrestore, for example, for further details - http://www.techrestore.com/xcart/home.php?cat=273

All 13" Mac Books have the same screen which measures 13" diagonally. If you need to examine other size/era Apple notebooks look here http://www.apple.com/support/hardware/
If you can plug an external display into it then click the top left Apple icon and select "About This Mac" for CPU identifiers etc.
    EDIT
I almost forgot - there are great service manuals available from here:

  • The bottom part of my screen is dead.  what do i do?

anytime i navigate to the far left screen to search for something, the phone wont allow me to tap search or space ect. on the bottom part of the screen.  ive tried texting with the phone upright and again, the bottom row of the screen is dead.  ive had my phone since 03-25-2013.  it is an iphone 4s 16gb in white.

THANK YOU FOR YOU HELP!!!  im guessing i take the phone and receipt to the nearest apple store?  i bought my phone in a verizon store and opted out of their insurance plan.  phone has never been dropped and it is in a defender case otter box.

  • Touch Screen is Dead

My HTC Incredible 2 Touch Screen has dead spots and when stopping buy the store I was asked "Do you have insurance, because if you did I would just give you a new phone. But your touchability is being lost so now you have to buy a new phone."
I am 19 months into my contract. Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the insurance for the first year only?
I was told the best solution is to turn my phone on and off until the screen was usable. Come on, is this tech support?
I visited this website and it gave me steps to follow to reset the phone, claiming the touch screen prolems were caused most likely by a 3rd party app.
OK, so I reset the phone to the factory default.
Now the touch screen has more dead spots and I cant even do the initial set up on the phone. I am worse off than before. I am eligible for an upgrade, but do I want to spend more money to get into more problems with the same type of phone?
I hesitate to visit the store just to be told I need a new phone. I have not met anybody who hasn't heard the same solution, turn it on and off, if that doesn't work buy a new phone.

Brosiek, thank you for your post and explaining what you did to attempt to resolve the issue. There aren't any settings in the phone that could cause parts of the touchscreen to stop working, so that is why there wasn't much troubleshooting. It does sound like the phone needs to be replaced. The warranty is covered for one year unless you have an extended warranty. Insurance is for when the phone is damaged, lost, or stolen. Also, you mentioned purchasing the same type of phone with an upgrade. When eligible for an upgrade, you can choose any phone that we have available, but the pricing will vary. Upgrading would be the best option at this point unless you have an extended warranty.

  • Macbok pro screen goes dead during the startup process

Everything was working fine tonight until the computer went to sleep. After that I couldn't get the screen to stay on. I restart and it seems typical then the screen goes dead while the laptop continues to boot. Any ideas? The screen stays on during firewire target disk mode, ***!

It's a warranty issue. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • HT1212 my screen is dead.  How can i get my stuff off if i cannot enter passcode?

My screen is dead.  Dropped.  I got a new phone.  I want to get all the pictures off the old phone.  I logged into Itunes and it states that I need to enter the passcode.  I know the passcode but due to the screen being dead, I cannot enter it.

iTunes does not handle the import of photos/videos from the iPhone's camera roll.
This means you have not synced the iPhone with iTunes since enabling or changing the passcode lock. How come? You are in trouble since you will not be able to sync with iTunes but you should be able to import photos from the camera roll.

  • Hi i have iMac G5 Power PC with dead logic board, when i turn it on screen is dead. Is it possible to recover data off it by hooking up via firewire to my newer G5 3.06Ghz with IntelCore

Kia ora, hi i have an older (2003 or 4) iMac G5 Power PC 2GHZ - when i turn it on the screen stays dead but the light below screen comes on & i can hear fan (after a few mins on the fan gets noisy).I think the logic board may be dead & can not afford new one & I would like to recover some files & stuff from it and have heard you can recover stuff using a firewire cable so i got cable (firewire 400 to 800) but i am unsure how exactly to do it.
Can anyone out there please explain how i might do it
    Thankyou very much
ps my first post on mac forums so hope i got it right

You can remove the hard drive from the iMac and put it in an external enclosure.  You could try using Target Disk Mode to transfer data.  Click on the blue link to get the instructions on how to transfer the data.

  • Battery won't work, screen went dead.  Ideas?

    Hi all,
I took my 17" out of it's bag today and plugged it in and turned it on. After about 2-3 min of using the screen went dead. I restarted. Same thing, after 2-3 min of use the screen dead. Everyhing was still running fine, but the display. I restarted again and now the screen is so dim I can't make anything out, but I can faintly see some graphics. I unplugged it from the AC cord, it instantly shut off. The battery is fully charged but doesn't seem to work. Only on AC, and even then the screen is so dim is might as well be black. Any ideas? I tried the brightness button, I can just see the brightness logo come up but no change on the screen. Thank you for your time!

Yes, BSteely makes a good point. You should definitely try resetting your PMU. Turn off your PowerBook, then press Shift-Control-Option-Power simultaneously, wait five seconds and then turn on your PowerBook.
Also try resetting the PRAM. Turn off your PowerBook, turn it back on and immediately press and hold Command-Option-P-R until the startup chime repeats.
Probably this won't fix the problem, but it definitely won't cost you anything.

  • Dropped iPhone and Screen is dead.

Dropped iPhone. Screen is dead. iTunes sees phone normally.  Need to sync, but can't enter passcode, because screen is dead.  Can passcode be entered from within iTunes?

Either your wife doesn't have a passcode, or her iPhone is running a version prior to iOS 7.
You still didn't answer the question about iCloud, was it enabled?
Also, do not take the phone to an unauthorized third party shop as Apple will no longer service it in the future if you do.

  • HT4113 my iphone screen is dead, can't unlock

my iphone screen is dead, can't unlock and sync to my computer

    Long shot but...
    1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
    2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • Nokia X3 - screen's dead, I need to extract the co...

Recently, my X3's screen doesn't work any more, nor do the call buttons. I cant turn it off or on and the only thing that makes me guess that it's still working is that the keyboard lights up any time I slide it open. When I link it to nokia pcsuite the program at first starts working normally, but when I try to access the contacts list, it gives me this error message: "unable to modify USB mode, please modify USB mode from the phone", action that I cannot perform since the screen is dead and the buttons don't work. If they worked, I'd have tried modifying the USB mode blindly (it should be easy, since I just have to press the same button once or twice), but unfortunately I can't.
Accessing the phone from my PC is anyway possible, without using pcsuite: I can access its memory (which is E in my computer) and see these folders: "images", "others", "private", "resource", "Sounds", "sys", "System" and "videos", plus a single file named card_content.cid. Starting from here, can anybody suggest me a way to extract the contacts and save them on the PC? I don't need to put them inside another phone, I just need to have them in a readable format, with name and phone number.
    Thanks in advance!

Not sure what you mean by 'Call Buttons'.. but atleast the 'Navigation' button needs to be working to set the proper USB mode. As soon as you connect the phone press the Centre of the Navigation button as if you are selecting something from the Menu and check whether it gets connected in the proper (PC Suite) mode ...Else, it seems a bit difficult to extract the Contacts.
..and this is for Future action (for any new phone that you buy)
1.Back-up your data at regular interval. Especially after you add any important data.
    2. Set the USB connection mode to PC Suite as default. (for Nokia X3-00 its thru' Menu-->Settings-->Connectivity-->USB Data Cable-->PC Suite). With this, even if the display is not working but the phone is, then it will get connected to PC where you can Back-up / Sync your data thru' Nokia suite..

  • IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive?

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • How to erase a Macbook Pro Hard drive when the screen is dead

I have a Macbook Pro (2007) with a dead screen and a motherboard issue. Just bought a new macbook and i was planning on transfering the hard drive over and selling my pro on ebay for parts, Is there anyway i can securely delete my data from the computer without seeing it on the screen before i decide to sell it?

Be sure your dead Mac isn't covered by this program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If it is, you can get a free repair, and it would be worth a lot more on EBay.
    Good luck!

  • HT1430 Ipod touch (5th generation) w/ lines across the screen - now dead.

My son's Ipod touch (5th generation) had lines across the screen. I turned it off using the home + on/off button reset, but the apple never came back on. Now it seems to be dead. Not dropped, not completely drained, no water damage. Just dead. Any ideas?
I have also tried plugging it into my Macbook Pro, and iTunes does not find it.
    ITunes is up to date.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Screen is dead, and restoring isn't fixing it

A few days after updating my 1st gen iPod touch to 3.1.3, I was suddenly given a white screen. This was followed by a black screen after reseting it. After restoring my iPod, the screen will not turn on at all but the iPod will behave as if it is in fact on. It is still recognized by my computer, though it takes much longer than it should. I've "successfully" restored it several times just to continue seeing this dead screen.
Please, if you have any ideas on fixing this I will be immensely grateful since I have no means of purchasing a new one till the summer
