Screen lock on MacBook Pro. how do I turn it off?

There are two levels of security. I need to turn off the first level so that I can erase the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. How do I turn off the padlock on the first screen? macbook pro 10.9.5
purchased in2009

No, you are not.  Apple merely encourages there customers to secure their own data.  Only fools choose to not have a passcode lock.  I hope for your own laziness that you never keep any personal data on your phone... otherwise you are setting yourself up for major issues when your phone falls into the hands of an unscrupulous person.

How can I disable screen lock?

You've lost me. What screen are you in? There is no choice to change the password in security settings unless you're messing about with the Master password option. You just need to click the padlock in the red circle and enter a valid Admin user password:

  • Screen lock on macbook pro, does it pause backups?

If screen lock takes place which backup running, does this mean backup is still running in the background, or does it stop and only resume when I unlock the laptop?

It continues in the background. All tasks will continue to run with a screen lock in effect, but you will just not be allowed to interact with them until you supply the appropriate password.

  • I no longer have the option of "never" for my lock screen on Iphone 5. How can I turn it off?

I used to be able to set my lock screen to never. Some time over the past week that option disappeared and my screen locks. This is annoying. How can I change it?

If this is a business phone and connected, for example, to an Exchange server then the security profile on your device can be changed to eliminate certain options considered insecure like setting Auto-Lock to "Never". Check on this.

  • Screen is zoomed, magnified. How do I turn this OFF?????

HELP! Our daughter pushed SOME button on the keyboard of our Macbook Pro --now the entire screen is zoomed, magnified. It moves around w/ the cursor. How do I turn this function OFF?????

The keyboard shortcut to activate Zoom is Option+Command+8. Or open System Preferences>Universal Access>Seeing and select Off.
To prevent this being accidentally activated in the future go to System Preferences>Keyboard>KeyboardShortcuts>Universal Access and uncheck all the boxes.

  • MacBook Pro stops loading and turns itself off at login

My MacBook Pro with OS X Yosemite won't load past the login.  It turns on, has me click on my login photo and enter my password, but then only loads about 50% and then shuts itself off.  Help!  I've restarted multiple times, and when it randomly loads with the apple logo, it will sometimes then route me to the option to reinstall Yosemite.  But it won't let me do that either.  it says my hard drive is locked.  One time, I was able to get to the Macintosh HD disk first aid screen and ran that.  It indicated that my disk needed to be repaired.  I clicked on "repair disk," and it goes through the motions, but I'm not sure what to do then.  If I restart, the issue at login persists.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I have to cold boot my Macbook Pro each time I turn it off..?

Hi, lately I've had a problem in which I can't seem to be able to turn off or restart my Macbook Pro unless I cold boot it, which I hate doing. I've looked for the problem online but can't seem to find a solution. Also a lot of my programs freeze as soon as I open them and if they don't they'll freeze a while later, once I quit them I can't seem to restart them again unless I turn off my computer... which I can't.
I don't know if anybody has the same problem I have..? But I'm annoyed because I can't seem to do anything else on my computer rather than browse the web. I have A 13 Inch Macbook Pro and I'm running leopard.

I think you're using incorrect terminology.  It sounds like you're having to force it to shut down.  (A "cold boot" is simply the process of starting up a machine that has been shut down completely, regardless of how it was shut down.)  Is that a correct assumption?
If so, you are right that a forced shutdown is not a good thing.  The first thing I would recommend doing is repair the hard drive with Disk Utility by starting up from your Mac OS X install disk and then choosing Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  Every forced shutdown is a chance for the system drive to become corrupt, which could explain your other issues.
Beyond that, it's difficult to guess what the cause of these problems might be without more information.  It could be a variety of things.  Do you get any kind of message that indicates why the machine won't shut down, or does it simply act like you never told it to shut down?

  • MacBook Pro - How do I turn of the pulsing light?

I've recently purchased my first Mac, but there's one thing that's driving me crazy. I cannot turn off the pulsing light on the front when I put it to sleep. I've looked everywhere.
I live in a small place and even though I put it to sleep, it lights up my whole room when it pulses. It also seems to drain the batter a little faster than my last laptop which really went to sleep.

I found this discussion looking for answers to this question myself. It's not a stupid question and not everyone is as informed as you seem to feel you are. Does it make you feel better to talk down to novice users?
Saksiri-San, if you even continue to follow this thread, I just throw mine in my laptop bag, it annoys me too and is far brighter than most of the red or green LEDs on most laptops. And please ignore the rude comments like these from know-it-alls who get defensive over legitimate questions.
Marc, I would suggest actually trying to help those with questions or keeping your comments to yourself. It's a waste of time reading crap like what you've posted.

Anyone else having this issue? My machine complete locks up

    Hello,
Turn TM off in the system preferences. Plug in your BACKUP drive. Open Spotlight preferences and make sure BACKUP is excluded from Spotlight indexing
Open Disk Utility and perform a "Repair Drive" on that drive. It looks like there is a pretty big problem as reported in the log. Either you yanked the FW cable and dropped the connection. If it's not the case, you'll have to identify why that drive looked liked it was not present.

How do I get Elements to occupy full screen on my macbook pro? - the docking station remains visible and I don't want to have the dock in hide mode?

Unfortunately, there is no answer to this problem via this link. It may be that this is simply how the software actually works. It is a design fault in Adobe Photoshop Elements. It is possible to temporarily hide the dock within 'system preferences'. Oh well. Someone may know better.... I hope!

  • Hello, I have mistakenly deleted all partitions on my mac while trying to install windows on my macbook pro, how do i reinstall the mac os back

Hello, I have mistakenly deleted all partitions on my mac while trying to install windows on my macbook pro, how do i reinstall the mac os back. I just wanted to have them both, please help. thank you in advance

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I want to use my old iMac G3 as second monitor to my MacBook Pro, how?

I want to use my old iMac G3 as second monitor to my MacBook Pro, how?
    Thanks!

You can't really do it in any normal way; that is, using the MacBook's video output port.
    You can use this program
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
to make your iMac screen act as a second display, over a network connection. ScreenRecycler runs on your MacBook and creates a virtual second display. It uses the open-source VNC (screen sharing) protocol to serve that second display over the local network. You then run a VNC client program (usually free) on the iMac G3 and display the MacBooks virtual second screen in a window, which you can display full screen. Your iMac then appears to be the MacBook's second screen. You use System Preferences Displays pane to set it up, as you would a real second display.
How well this works depends on your iMac's speed, what Mac OS version it runs, and the speed of the network connection. If you connect the two directly with an Ethernet cable (Cat-5 or better), the network speed should be decently fast (at 100Base-T). If your iMac G3 has Tiger (10.4), you can use this program as the VNC client
    http://www.jinx.de/JollysFastVNC.html
(there are free VNC clients for 10.3 and earlier)
However, this solution will never be as fast (in terms of screen refresh rate) as a real display using a real video connection. But you can try it at no cost, to see if it meets your needs.
