Screen losing brightness and color fading

I have a 4 yr old Powerbook G-4 and the past two weeks have notices the brightness of the screen is fading as well as the images (screen saver). It is beginning to be difficult to see the files I have on my desk top. Will an adjustment help - what might that be? or do I have a much bigger problem?
Thanks,
Captain Krunch

regarding bsteely's comment...
don't use a screensaver???
i have the middle macbook c2d...bought dec. 2006. i guess i have an lcd screen....so you're saying i shouldn't use a screensaver?? i have it set to run for 30 mins or 1 hr then sleep. it's of all my pictures...i really like it.
i was taught to ALWAYS use a screensaver to prevent the screen from burning out.
so what would you suggest as an alternative?
what does anyone else think??

  • Evening Out The Brightness and Color of a Set of Images

So I have a set of images, usually between 500-700, all taken in a 20min period or so. Natural light through a window. It's shot handheld with my Canon rebel with a 18-55mm lens. Due to the slight change in light over the time period, the fact I'm zooming in and out, and moving around the subject, I get a lot of value and color variation. See the images below...
My current process is to manually color correct each image so they match in terms of brightness and color. This gets very tedious of course. Could someone suggest a faster, preferably completely automated way to even out the brightness and colors of a set of images like these in lightroom so they all look pretty similar to each other?
    Thanks for any help!
    - Neil

    Hi léonie,
    >> One problem - it is not only the different color of the light because of the setting sun.
    >> Your Harry and Harold are receiving the sun light from different directions. Harold is
    >> facing away from the sun and the light in the shadows is much bluer. I doubt you will
    >> be able to "Lift&Stamp" the adjustment between these two groups of images without
    >> fine tuning it. The "shady" Harold will need additional color correction to turn the bluish
    >> shadows into sunlight, because the shadow regions need contrast stretching and
    >> more vibrancy as well.
Yup, that's one reason I think I need a color correction after the fact method to handle this situation, obviously taking a shot that's mostly in shadow will look different than one where the character is almost all in complete sunlight.
I guess I'm really having three issues here, first is the blue tint that gets introduced when I zoom in, and then second is the natural lightening and darkening that occurs as I take photos of the subject from different angles, and third is the fact since its sunlight the light does change somewhat over the 20minute period.
Hopefully the first issue can be solved by turning off automatic white balance, and I'm still hoping there may be some automated method for evening out the value difference introduced by the 2nd and third issue. Although even if I can just solve the first issue that would save me a ton of time.
Thanks for the info so far.

  • Brightness and color loss

I have a 13' macbook Aluminum 2008 .  My friend brought a newer Macbook pro and we compare the MacBooks and his lighting was brighter and the color was better. i check my battery cycle count and its over what the limit is. and every now and then my screen flashes off quicky black . Also my battery doesnt last 30 minutes.  Can the battery be the problem of my color and light loss

Could be the battery, but have you changed Color LCD in System Prefrences?

  • 3rd party brightness and color options for quicktime?

I have quicktime Pro. Unfortunately, my graphics card on my ibook 12 inch does not support the video options on A/V controls.
I'd like to change the brightness and/or the colors of some of the movies I watch as sometimes they are rather dark or muted.
On the pro version, I can't do this ( why? I don't know. Isn't it PRO?). I know there are other viewers like VLC that can but I don't want to have to use that because I like the clarity of quicktime.
Are there any solutions to this problem? Maybe some third party add on that I can buy?
    Thanks very much.

Depends somewhat on the TV you have in mind.
If a new HDTV you may have choice of HDMI (or DVI), component and composite inputs. Of course, some of those inputs may already be committed to cable, DVD, satellite, etc.
If you have a wi-fi network you might even want to look into Apple TV; a friend was very enthused by his when we had breakfast together this morning.

  • Screen is grainy and colors distorted.

    Hi everyone,
Currently, my Macbook Pro (early 2011) is experiencing graphic display issues. My screen's is grainy and somewhat pixelated, which makes the color distorted. I resolved this problem once after closing and opening my lid (sleeping and turning it back on), but now that does not help anymore. I also noticed that, in the past, when I restarted or shut-down my computer, it would have random color distortions on the blue screen as well. When I try to take a screenshot of this problem and open the picture on another computer, the picture appears fine, so i'm assuming its an issue with my screen. Also, when I turn on "Automatic graphics switching," my System Profiler information still indicates that my AMD RAdeon HD 6750 is running.
How can I fix this problem? Thank you!

    System Preferences/Display/Display
Check the Colors & Brightness settings.
My Color setting is set to Millions which I believe is the default setting.
Now click on the Color button.
    Check Display Profile
Is Show profiles for this display only enabled or disabled?
If necessary click on the Calibrate button & do the necessary.
Now in the bottom right corner, click on the purple button w/the black *?* mark in the middle.  This will bring up the help window.
Midway down, click on the Colorsync Utility link.
The next window should be Profile First Aid.
Read & follow the instructions/details of About Profile First Aid: & do the necessary to Verify & Repair.

  • Changing brightness and colors of an image

Here's code for an applet that will create a gradient:
    http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1408696&postcount=5
How would you load an image and do this same thing to the image?
Also, how could you add a slider to change the brightness?
Any tips or code samples would be much appreciated.

Here's the code that changes the rgb values. But, it doesn't work in some browsers and earlier versions of jre. Can you fix it so that it works? Also, how would you add to this code to make it change the brightness of an image?

  • SCREEN LOSING BRIGHTNESS!!!!!

hi, this june will be the one year birthday of my ibook g4 12" i have never had a single problem with the laptop but recently i noticed the screen has gotten a bit dimmer. i can still see everything on the screen but its no longer the vibrant bright screen it was. i wish it was because my computer was old but i havent even had it for a year yet !! does anyone have any suggestions on how to brighten up my screen (and yes brightness is all the way up) thanks a lot.

Since most Apple resellers will forward your portable computer to Apple,
you may as well go into one that is nearest where you live and let them
check with Apple online about your warranty coverage; and take it in.
Proof of your coverage should be in the main Support computers, but
if you have a dated proof of purchase for your computer, it may be nice
to also have that on hand if you carry in your machine for service.
You'd be charged to call in after the initial 90-day phone support, unless
you got the AppleCare extended Protection Plan; which would also (from
new) add up to three years Service -repairs- and phone support. Support
can help also in cases where a new user has an issue with software; but
the Service portion on the original one-year complementary coverage is
the repair portion you need to fix this; before it expires.
If you do get the AppleCare Protection Plan extended coverage plan, it
would be handy in the future and it can be transferred to another owner.
Also, should this problem as you see it, not be viewed in the same sense
of urgency by some tech advisor, with this extended policy in effect, the
issue would have a case number and should it get worse or fail, the item
would be in their system ahead of the actual event. That can be helpful.
Nearly any Apple reseller should have the AppleCare for iBook/MacBook
policy in stock; you can also order them from Apple online, or from an-
other Apple authorized reseller. Just so long as the physical item they
send you (if ordered) arrives before your purchase anniversary deadline
AND subsequent lag times before you enroll the plan directly with Apple.
If you buy it -but fail to enroll it- the policy is about worthless to your Mac.
Un-enrolled (unused) policies appear sometimes in dubious places for
sale; I'd avoid eBay resale Apple plans because you may get nothing. A
company called LA Computer seemed to offer the AppleCare plan for a
time, at a discount; not a great sale, but a little off to encourage one to
buy hardware and other things from them. The policy is about $250; and
that is a bargain against the price of a logic board. It is a good accessory.

  • Help! during my photo slide show/some screens are green and/colored-why

This is my first photo slide show in IMOVIE 8, when I go to "play" my slide show, some photo are NOT showing up INSTEAD a "colored" screen comes up. WHY? Not sure what I did wrong.

I to have the same problem. It is very annoying, I name my photos so that they would be in a specific order or grouping.
It appears that a programmer slipped? When I write code to copy files I would sort the list by filename as done in OS versions prior to 4.0.
The order of the photos is now in the order that they were added to the folder which is then sync'd to our pods.
I for one am not willing to remove and rebuild my whole photo library re-adding the photos to the sync'd in the order I wish to see them every time I wish to add more photos.
It is a disappointment, but I have not been online in a couple of weeks and maybe Apple has caught on and put filename sorting back into the code.

  • Ideacentre A520 All in One ~ brightness and color settings not saved

the settings I choose with the touchbuttons on my A520 get lost when restarting. I would like to lower the brightness settings perminantly, how is this achieved?

    hi qwertydotNL,
    Can you try this instead
    1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop and launch Nvidia Control Panel
    2. On the left side, expand the Display sub menu and select Adjust Desktop color settings
    3. Adjust the brightness / contrast accordingly and reboot the machine
If the problem persist, try to:
    4. Check if you have the Lenovo Dynamic Brightness System by searching it on the Metro UI, and reconfigure the settings or disable it to run on Startup.
    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
    Hope this helps

  • Screen losing brightness / spontaneous shutdowns

    2 Problems:
1.) My iMac G3 400 / slot-loader / OS 9.1 has had recent startup problems; i.e., occasionally shuts down spontaneously shortly after initial startup, or sometimes after several minutes, or longer use.
2.) The monitor has become darker. I brightened it a bit via the Monitor Control Panel, but it is still too dark.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
iMac G3 SE 400 mhz   Mac OS 9.1.x   384 RAM 16 GB HD DSL Modem

I'm no expert, but experienced the same issue. I believe that the iMac is not retaining enough charge for the monitor (26,000 volts for minimum brightness), which is why a) it's so dim, and 2) other parts (hard drive, etc.) pull so much power during startup that it kills the machine.
This is what I did to rescue my iMac while I look for another machine (you should try all software methods [permissions, pram, system disk, etc.] before you do this):
    1. UNPLUG.
    2. open the memory door. Reach in and disconnect the CD drive (you may need to take out the memory cards for better access). It's a little snug in there -- you may need to get out some needle-nose pliers. The plug is the SMALLER (and outmost) of the two black boxes leading into the cd drive. The other one is soldered onto the cd drive itself, and -- ahem -- shouldn't be yanked out.
    3. re-insert your memory cards if needed
    4. Plug back in.
    5. Try powering up. (zapping PRAM might be a good idea at this time, too)
    6. Let it sit with its "?" (hey, where's the system?) icon for a while -- I believe this builds a charge large enough to :
    7. Unplug, reconnect the CD drive, and power up.
If you have sucess, NEVER shut down (sleep was okay for me) unless you want to go through this process again. It seems the capacitor isn't holding charge on power down, or that the trickle charge isn't trickling well. It could also be that the charge is TOO large, but I doubt that.
Anyway, that is what worked for me. I'm typing from said iMac right now, and looking for a new one right now before it gets really scary...

  • Losing contrast and color when converting Motion JPEG OpenDML to H.264

    Hey
I have a Canon IXUS 850 IS which makes "Motion JPEG OpenDML" movies.
The files are kind of big, so I am trying to convert to a better codec.
But when I try converting to H.264 with Quicktime Pro 7 I always loose color intenseness so basically contrast.
Not sure if its a general problem or a settings problem.
I am converting at 2000 kbit/s, key frame automatic and MultiPass
    with no restricted profiles.
Anybody have an idea how I could compress this video without loosing so much image quality?
If you want to see what I mean, ceck out the original and the converted video in my .mac public folder in the folder "Motion JPEG OpenDML".

iMac Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well I seem to have found a solution instead of converting to mp4 I am converting to mov with h.264 codec.
The conversion it a lot better if I select best quality the quality is as good as the original but the file size gets even bigger than the original actuaqlly double the size.
When I select low quality I get about the same size and quality as when I convert to mp4.
In the end what I find strange is, why mp4 makes automatically a "low" quality compression and there is now setting to change the quality.
Really a bit strange but at least I have now found somewhat of a solution.

  • Brightness Filter effecting quality and color.

    Hi, Guys.
I could really do with your help.
I shot a scene in low light conditions so the image is fairly grainy anyway (I shot the scene on an Sony PMW EX3).
Some of the shots are a little bright though. I want to darken the image slightly but when I do this, using the brightness filter, it makes the whole image ridiculously grainy (blocky) and it also changes the colors to like a greeny color.
Does anyone know what I mean and does anyone know how I could adjust the brightness without increasing the size of the grain (without losing quality and color).
    Cheers guys.
    H

Yes Tom, the reverse ... but steady as she goes going in the opposite direction. You might want to explore some possible denoise options too if the grain is really too distracting.
Take a look at Mattias Sandström's Smart Noise Reduction filter which is part of his completely free and completely awesome Too Much Too Soon filter set: http://www.mattias.nu/plugins/
On the commercial side there is the highly recommended Neat Video plugin: http://www.neatvideo.com
Or ReVision Fx's aptly named DE Noise plugin: http://www.revisionfx.com/products/denoise/
