Screen pops up - Completer wants to make changes?

I'm getting a suspect screen on start up. It says "Completer wants to make changes. Type password to allow this." I keep hitting cancel and it comes back. Now today my husbands lap top is getting the same pop up at start up. Anyone know? Someone trying to hack my system?

You're installed the Genieo adware along with something else you installed.
Follow Apple's manual remove instructions. Or, use the automated Adware Medic.
Thomas' Adware Medic page is loading very slowly compared to earlier in the day. It's probably under attack again by the adware makers.

  • What does completer wants to make changes mean

every time i start up my macbook pro a box pops up on the home screen that says "Completer wants to make changes. Type in your password to continue." what does this mean?? it gives me the option to "cancel"which I've been doing but I also typed in my password the first time it happened. Has this happened to anyone else?

You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. Some of the items listed in the article may be absent.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • I keep getting a message after start up saying "Completer wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this (which I have not done). Have screen shots. What do I do? Read this is malware. Running Yosemite OS X 10.10.1

Have mac book pro, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.  I get this after start up: "Completer wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this" (which I have not entered. When I cancel, there is some unknown "installer" icon on my desktop. If I move it to the trash, this all just starts over on the next time it is restarted. Have screenshots, but for some reason I can not attach to this message right now. Heard this is malware...HELP!

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.

  • Completer wants to make changes

Every morning an installer icon appears on my desktop and dialog box says Completer wants to make changes.... and asking for my password, I have no idea what completer is, I throw the icon in the trash and it keeps reappearing ?
What is it, and should I complete install ?

It’s adware. Click here and follow the instructions, or if they don’t cover that type of adware, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • Completer wants to make changes. How to remove?

On startup, I get "Completer wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this." Some searched links indicated Genieo Addware. I do not have a Genieo Application installed yet, but I do have com.genieo.completer.* files in ~/Library/LaunchAgents. How do I get this out without killing myself?
    Thanks,

  • Completer wants to make changes.  Type in your password to allow this.  I have never seen this before and it wants my admin. pw.

I've never seen this request before.  I rarely shut down my computer, and when I restarted it this morning, the above is what I got in a small box.  I've tried to find "Completer" in help and communities but there is nothing.  I don't want to put in my password until I know it is valid.   I found on "google search" about Genieno which led me to a link in the Apple Communities.  There is nothing in my apps or computer with that name.  Anybody know what this is?  Thanks.

There should be nothing native to the OS X which would ask for a password
or  other information on a restart, unless accompanied by the traditional login
    box with your user name.
There are adware or marginal products that could be called malware (bad)
that would impose their presence and some items that could have been
downloaded by accident or through some corrupted free software site; of
those some could ask for and gain permission to go through your Mac
and maybe even run in the background to do other nefarious misdeeds.
You could see if startup in SafeBoot allows you access past that the Completer.
Since I don't have a pile of helpful article links on how to resolve various issues
I'd be looking them up one way or another.

  • Startup : " Completer wants to make changes "

Hello all, recently whever I start my macbook pro which runs OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 , I get a prompt asking me whether to allow changes by '' completer '' or not. Along with that a disk named '' Installer '' appears on my screen. There's no such thing in User Groups -> Login Items. Any idea on how to resolve this problem?

  • I am asked setup wants to make changes. not sure if it is apple or adobe

Hi I am re-new to apple. I am attempting to install some Adobe Element software. I enterend the code key. Adobe allowed me to skip an Adobe ID.. the next screen asked "Set up wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this" I don't know if its from Adobe or from Apple and i dont really know what to enter. My apple password doesnt work. Is there a generic apple password when you get a new computer for setup etc.? It doesnt make any sense that it is adobe either...thanks for your feedback.

The dialog is from the Adobe installer. If you don't have a password configured, then you cannot install software. You were supposed to set a password when you went through your initial setup of the computer. There is no generic password. You will have to reconfigure your user account to add a password.

When I go to migration assistant, and hit the continue button on the introductory screen, I get a message that says M Asst wants to make changes - type your password to allow this.   What is my password or how do I set one up for this?

When you set  up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
If you did not enter one then try using the  "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.

  • Opening ReaderX causes "This program wants to make changes to your computer" warning.

    I'm using Windows7.
Previous Adobe Reader versions worked fine on this computer; and when I first updated to Adobe Reader X it seemed to run correctly, until recently. Now everytime I try to open a .pdf file or the Reader X application, the screen goes black briefly and a "User Account Control" warning box pops-up with the message, "This program wants to make changes to your computer."
I have uninstalled Reader X, downloaded new install file from Adobe.com and re-installed the program, but it still does this everytime. I've designated Reader as the default program for .pdf files.
Can anyone tell me what's causing this to happen and/or what I can do to remedy the problem?

I am having the same problem!
Ever since I installed the latest update to Adobe Reader 10.1.3 (around the end of March) AR brings up the "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes..." whenever I open the reader.  NO OTHER applications do this except those that really need this permission.
I have not changed any UACs and in reading Pat's suggestion on changing the UACs above, I would only want to make changes if they could apply only to the Adobe Reader program.
It seems to me that something in the recent update changed Reader to cause this alert.
I sure would like to get AR to run like it used to.
    Thx for your help.
