Screen & Printer Profile settings CS3

Hello there,
I have been given completely varying (and conflicting) information from different sources (internet, colleagues, suppliers, lecturers) and want to put to bed how is best to set up color profiles.
Kit:
Windows 7 PC
Printer Epson R2880 with continious ink flow system
Custom Photo Paper
LG Monitor
Photoshop CS3
Below is how I set up my colour profiles in the pc control panel:
Printer Default Profile (applied under color management, devices):
Photo paper / Ink Company give us a custom profile for the printer / paper / ink combo we have
Monitor Default Profile (applied under color management, devices):
Custom profile created by us using an Xrite i1 display pro
Photoshop Color Settings (Edit, Color settings):
"Working Space RGB" - i select the custom profile that I created for the monitor - this doesn't seem right
"Management Policies - convert to working RGB"
Print settings:
Select the Epson Printer and also select" color management tab" (rather than "output")
"Document selected" ticked in brackets says "custom RGB profile"
"Color Handling - Photoshop Managed Colors" is selected
"Printer Profile - custom printer profile" is selected (this is the same one applied to the printer elsewhere)
"Perceptual" & Black Point Compensation are also selected
I feel like I am double applying profiles, very lost and needing help (one socalled professional I spoke to didn't even know you could manually apply a profile in windows to a device, he just always selected using print preferences in photoshop!)
I used to work in a pro photolab and colors are critical, with the digital era I find getting from what is on the screen to the print very difficult to get accurate and more consistent.
Any help and opinions would be greatly appreciated .

PSE6 printer profile location.

I use PSE 6. I recently suffered a hard drive crash. I have a backup, but was unable to do an automatic restore. Consequently, I lost all of my printer profile settings. If I can locate the file, I think I should be able to copy it into my new installation. Can anyone tell me where to find it?

CS3 printer profiles (icc & icm) have disappeared.

I am running under XP SP3 with Photoshop CS3 version 10.0.1 with an Epson R2400. All of the profiles are present in windows/system32/spool/drivers/color, but are not listed in Photoshop's printer profile list. Everything was working fine as recently as 3-4 weeks ago, and everything is still working fine in CS2 which is also installed on this machine (3.7gig processor with 1gig ram) and several large hard drives).
I noticed the problem after installing SP3 today, but the problem remained after I restored a Ghost image created just prior to the SP3 update. Thus, it seems not to be caused by SP3. I have reinstalled SP3 based on that conclusion.
The only items on the printer profile list look like things that ship with Photoshop such as Apple RGB.

Sorry, but it is NOT a screen resolution problem. As I said, up until a few weeks ago, everything worked fine. Printer profiles are displayed, but, I suspect, ONLY the ones which ship with Photoshop. Other profiles, such as those for the 2400R are NOT displayed even though they exist in the correct location. I can see the entire profile list, and there are no scrolling controls being displayed.
Options were reset before I posted this issue. The reset did not help.

Color management screen/print & ICC Profiles

I'm an amateur photographer and Lightroom 5 user. I shoot RAW with a Nikon D7000 and use Xrite Colorchecker passport to create camera profiles To calibrate my monitor I use Xrite i1 Display Pro (D65, 2.20 Gamma, 80 lumens brightness).
I have had great success displaying slideshows of my photos on a panasonic plasma 50". The problem I am having is printing pictures. I export to jpg using Adobe RGB and take my photos to the local Costco but the pictures come out darker and the colors are slightly off. When comparing prints to the Colorchecker passport the color difference is evident. Printing with Costco has been a hit and miss regardless of location.
I would like to set up my own printer to print photos. I have an Epson Stylus CX7450 and Epson Glossy Photo Paper (SO41141). Where can I get the ICC profiles for the printer and paper combination? I am looking for some advice and solutions to help improve my workflow and quality print output .

Although ICC profiles for the Epson professional (Stylus Pro) printers are readily downloadable from the Epson web site, I don't think Epson creates ICC profiles for the all-in-ones, probably because they are considered to be more like general office equipment. You'd have to find some profiles online that others have created, or make your own with a printer profiling device.
As for Costco, you might get better prints by using profiles made for the printer at your local Costco. These may be available from Dry Creek Photo. Note that for the profiles to work properly you have to follow the directions on the site for communicating with the Costco photo print department so that they set their printer to account for the fact that you've exported to a specific profile.

Removing Printer Profiles for use in PS CS3

I'm setting up my work flow using PS to manage printing. I have lots of printer profiles accumulated over the years and would like to weed them out. How can I do that? Where are they located in the files? I'm using OS 10.5.2.

They're generally located in your Library>ColorSync>Profiles folder, but some are also in the same folder under your User name. Because I make custom profiles for both myself and others, not only inkjets but at least twenty different printing houses and a couple of photo labs here in lo-cal, I have hundreds. What I do is make a new folder called Profiles Disabled and move all the unwanted profiles to that folder. I'm not getting rid of them permanently but getting them out of sight as far as Ps is concerned.

Color Profile settings for a better print?

I need to print a CD label (using one of those cheap CD label templates) that consists of a photo and some text that will be placed on a CD. I will be using an HP laserjet printer http://www.amazon.com/HP-LaserJet-CP1525nw-Printer-CE875A/dp/B0044XSNHG My file is set to RGB, though it is printing much darker than I want it to.
1. Which color profile should I be using to make the colors on my label look better?
2. Any other tips, besides getting a better printer?

Typically, best inkjet prints occur when the image profile and the specific printer profile are used in conjunction with a brand-specific paper stock. The CD-label is a third-party paper, and the printer doesn't "know" how to best address it. Aside from calibrating your monitor to ensure that you are seeing something "close" to what the file is, you will probably find that you need to make color adjustments to the file in order to get the print color you want on a third-party paper stock. When confronted with this situation, I usually use a curves or levels layer for this, and label that layer "for printing."

your task is for me not quite clear. I can see two scenarios:
a) Calibrate the press for ISONewspaper26v4 ink (your standard process) on salmon colored paper.
    Print the target by press on this paper, measure and build the profile. There is no problem so far.
    But preparing CMYK data with this profile for printing by press requires a very complicated gamut
    compression, becauses the gamut of the actual process on salmon paper is small and excentric
    in Lab. As mentioned in my previous post.
b) Simulate the appearance of press prints on salmon paper, disregarding the salmon color by profiles.
    This shall be done in your case by a toner printer.
    The toner printer has to be calibrated with white paper. As a result one gets a valid Printer Profile.
    The proof printing happens for a CMYK file, for instance a PDF/X-1a file so:
    Input profile: ISONewspaper26v4
    Output profile: Printer Profile
    Printed on salmon paper!
    The printer profiling converts the toner printer into a more or less reliable proof printer. This has nothing
    to do with colored paper.

Printer profiles in templates

I've just spent most of the afternoon trying to resolve a problem.
My question is does any one know if the printer profile in " User Templates" overrides the one selected in the image settings column.
The reason I ask is that I've been trying to match 2 print sizes in LR without much success. The smaller ones match the screen but the larger one's don't. Both were printed from my own designed templates.Nothing complicated just some custom sizes. Switching to CS3 I printed the larger prints and got a perfect match.
In frustration I used one of the LR print templates to see what would happen. Guess what I got the match I was looking for.
Not wishing to make the mistake again I deleted the offending template before it occurred to me to check the profile associated with it.
Regrettably I couldn't check what printer profile was included, hence my question

When you print from iPhoto you can select the paper type, such as Archival Matt, and that Epson profile will be used. The Epson R300 Standard is merely a description of the printer you are using. This is the same behavior as in Photoshop. Where you might see a difference is in the way Photoshop displays the image on screen, based on your monitor profile and color settings. iPhoto is not really using a source profile for display purposes, other than the camera sRGB (assuming you're using a digital camera that uses sRGB. So if you edit an image in iPhotobrightness, contrast, etc) it may apper different on screen and cause you to make changes that will result in a unsatisfactory print.

Dark Prints with Photoshop CS3 and CS4 but not Lightroom

Hi, To start,I have calibrated my dell monitor with eye-one pro as well as my epson 7800. i am running vista 64 bit on my PC...
When i use photoshop (CS3 or CS4) the images look fine on the screen and come out really dark on the printer. When i use lightroom, the images look fine on the screen and fine on the printer.
Any guidance on how to "fix" photoshop would be appreciated. By the way, in photoshop print dialogue, i color manage the document, photoshop manages the color, the printer profile is set to the I-1 custom printer profile, rendering is perceptual, and black point compensation is checked.

I manage color and service bureau printing at the college I work for, and we've been fighting the upgrade to CS4 for some time. Here's what we have so far.
Apple dual G5 machine with 10.5.8
Adobe PS CS3
Adobe PS CS4
3 x Epson 4800 Pro printers using an IP connection and using Driver version #6.11
We manage color with custom created profiles in eyeOne with eyeOne pro hardware.
When moving to CS4 for printing prints have gond dark and the color has taken an odd shift.
When printing with CS3, we get consistent color and density
All things being equal in the print settings for each version of PS.
I have heard that CS4 addresses the printing system differently (using an updated printing api from Apple) is this true?
When running prints from within another app (any app really) that prints directly through the OS, we get similar results as CS4.
The best explaination that we've been able to get is that the (epson) print driver is operating on the older api calls, and that when the OS (or CS4) is operating on the newer calls, the color and density issues arise.
Can anyone verify this?

Color management, printing with InDesign CS3

RGB output devices (this includes essentially all inkjet printers from every manufacturer, when driven by the manufacturer print driver). Inkjet printers driven by a PostScript RIP are considered CMYK output devices, and thus this post does not apply to them.
When printing to RGB output devices from InDesign using the same ICC profiles and settings as in Photoshop, you still get crummy results, in terms of color, that differ from both IDCS2 and other Adobe applications including Photoshop CS3.
InDesign CS2 previously did all rasterizing and color space conversion in InDesign prior to submitting the print job to the OS. In CS3 this was changed to submit PostScript + colorspace information, which is then supposed to be normalized by the OS. Except that it doesn't work. Mac OS X drops the color space information.
The work around is to check "Print as Bitmap" in the advanced section of the IDCS3 print dialog. This causes IDCS3 to do the conversion and generate a bitmap prior to submitting to the OS, rather than depending on the OS to do color conversion or rasterizing, which is the default behavior with IDCS2. Thus you can use the same ICC profiles and print driver settings as with all other Adobe applications, if you choose this option.

First, I am surprised that there has been no response to your post since there were more than a few complaints about the problem in this forum when IDCS3 first came out. So thank you for the solution to this vexing problem.
But I find some of the language in your post a bit problematic:

The second quote seems incorrect on two counts:
1. It contradicts the first quoted statement.
2. In my mac IDCS2 (version 4.0.5 build 688) in the options area of the color management pane of the print dialog, the only available choice for the Color Handling pop up is "Let InDesign Determine Colors".
So the default behavior with IDCS2 seems to be "Let InDesign Determine Colors".
I am not at all taking issue with the main point of your post, which I welcome wholeheartedly. I just find the second quoted phrase from you post confusing. Can you please clarify.
Returning to your main point, are there any downsides of using the Print as Bitmap method?

Saved "printing shortcuts" settings don't appear to be saved??

I'm a bit frustrated with the "Printing Shortcuts" option to save your own settings after noticing that when I've saved settings, they don't always seem to be saved. I've gone through the tabs (esp . the color settings) and set things the way I want, then gone back to the 'printing shortcuts' tab and clicked 'save as' at the bottom and entered a name. The name appears in the list and looks like it was saved. But when I go back and click that shortcut, my settings do not reappear when I look through the tabs.
I've saved two Shortcut settings of my own, set paper sizes, the right paper, and advanced color settings. I've done it by right clicking the printer in Windows and going into "printer preferences", etc...and I've also tried it by clicking "print" in Photoshop,choosing the printer in the pop-up window, clicking 'preferences', and reaching the HP "shortcuts" menu. Both ways obviously get you to the HP "Printing Shortcuts" utility, and either way I can see the two shortcuts I saved. But again, if I click either of them none of the selections for paper, paper size, or color settings appear. Clicking on some of the built-in shortcuts makes the paper/paper-size settings switch accordingly---so why don't the ones I save myself?
Is that normal?
(For what it's worth...I'm still aggravated that HP has -no-..meaning -zero-..printer profiles readily available for this printer in Windows. I've fought with trying to create one that works and may finally just buy an IT8 target. But I finally just gave up and decided to roll my own color settings in the above 'shortcuts'. Just today, a week after I bought this, I can generate nice acceptable skin tones in my prints that look like what's on the screen in Photoshop. For what it's worth I do love the prints, and this printer is great after all this. So, now, I wish the shortcuts would stay the way I make them.)

Having exactly the same issue. Using UPD 5.3 PCL6 driver. I can apply changes to the default/eco short cuts and they are retained until you select another shortcut and return to the original. At that point it reverts to the default default. Close and reopen and my mods appear again.
With the additional shortcuts though, I can create whatever I want, save as and apply, close the window & reopen and no new shortcuts.

Printer profiles in iPhoto

Is there any way to use my Epson printer profiles in iPhoto when printing directly from iPhoto. I know I can select Colorsync, but what is it using for a printer profile?
If I get a custom profile for my printer (which I have), how can I select this?

Epson 3800 printer profiles not showing up in Photoshop 3 and 5

When I try to print to my Epson PRO 3800, asking Photoshop to handle colors, this printer profiles are not available. I have this printer for years and have always used PS CS3 to print (and handle colors). Now I have PS CS5 but continue to use 3 for printing to the 3800, because the Epson profiles disppeared from CS5. Now they have disappeared from CS3 too. Any advices?

Printer Profiles on iPrint

Is there any automatic processes that updates already installed printers
on workstations if the Printer Profiles is updated e.g. with another
tray, or do i have to delete the printer and reinstall it manually with
that /ipp webpage?

You can't really push down the new settings automatically. However,
there are a couple of things you can do depending on if this is NetWare
or Linux. If it's NetWare you can rename the printer agent on the
Manager screen. Renaming the printer will cause iPrint to install the
new printer and delete the old printer automatically. When it's
installed with the new name it will pull down the drivers and printer
profile meaning it will get the updated profile with new settings (e.g.
new tray added).
An option that works with both platforms is to create a new printer
altogether and then define printer agent redirection again within the
NDPS/iPrint Manager. When someone attempts to access a redirected
printer the iPrint client will download the new printer and delete the
old one. TID 3006726 gives more information on printer agent redirection.
Note that a feature for OES2 SP2 is auto driver update. The checkbox
already exists in iManager on OES2 SP1 with the latest iPrint plugin but
is not yet active.

Printer profiles not recognised in Photoshop CS6 print dialogue

Note that the Illustrator, Indesign and Acrobat print dialogues see all my (custom) printer profiles.
Even Photoshop sees them in the Apply Profile and Convert to Profile dialogues: just not when trying to print.
Is this a known problem?

Thanks, Jeff. This issue goes far beyond Adobe. I'm trying to resolve colorspace problems that get even more confusing when there are multiple web pages or other documents at multiple websites, including software companies and camera companies that have conflicting information for the same thing. I don't want to add something else into the mix that may make things worse. Unless the user can have the settings that they know worked on their device to rely on as a point of reference to make controlled changes to accommodate a software change, it's like taking two handfulls of M&Ms to represent various colorspaces in three places in a program and using trial and error to figure out which two or three colors to use and in which order. I think of this as informative dialog and not venting.
Update: After burning through another color ink cartridge and 20 more sheets of Kodak glossy photo paper, I managed to come up with a combination of profiles and colorspaces that are acceptable with the Kodak ESP9 printer in PS CS6. While Adobe RGB should work from the Nikon D7000 JPEG for a larger color gamut, with the Kodak printer, the colors were dull. Went back to sRGB in the camera and sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for the working RGB profile. In this printer, color management cannot be disabled in the printer itself, so I selected Adobe RGB. In the PS Print Settings Color Management, PS Manages Colors, and the Printer Profile is Beta RGB (Adobe RGB is not an available choice). After increasing the photo brightness to about +20, the contrast slightly, and increasing the shadows setting to bring out the shadowed areas somewhat, the printed photo is a close match to the on-screen image on the calibrated LED monitor. When I tried CIE RGB, the colors were more saturated but had too much blue. Maybe this will help others.
