Screen problem - dark patches at the bottom, overall brightness reduced

I bought my MacBook in September 2008 and about 11 months later some dark patches (rather like large thumb-prints) started to appear at the bottom of the screen. The overall brightness of the screen has reduced as well. The patches are more noticable when turning it on in the morning (i.e. when it's been off all night for 10-12 hours), and they fade slightly after a few minutes. The brightness of the screen however, does not improve. It's not ridiculously dark, but the difference is still notable, and when compared with another, one can clearly see mine is a lot darker.
I took it back to the retailer (while within warranty) and their repair company do not think there is anything wrong with it. I know the basics about computer hardware, and my guess is that the backlight has malfunctioned.
Does anyone disagree? If so, what do you think the problem is? I'm not interested in fixing anything myself as that would involve me forking out. Plus I want to get as much out of the retailer as I can for messing me around for over four months!
Cheers,
Ben.

I know this is a bit late but when you say you took it back to the retailer are you referring to and Apple retail store or a third party reseller? If it's still under warranty take it to an authorized service provider.

  • Screen goes dark with searching in bottom corner

I have 4 set top boxes in my house and recently have been having issues with the one in my bedrooms.  The screen goes dark and in the bottom right hand corner it says searching.  I have unplugged the router, unplugged all the tvs and replugged them in and after a few hours it starts doing it again.  Sometimes it will be dark for up to 5 minutes and then it will start playing again.

This sounds like the TV is searching for a video signal. It is like if you were watching a DVD and somebody unplugged the video cables from the back of the TV. It doesn't mean the verizon settop box has turned off or lost connection with Verizon service, but rather the settop box and the TV have lost connection with each other. This is just how it sounds to me from your description. try swapping out the cabling that connects the STB to the TV.

Mac and Mac models are picky about the RAM the Mac needs to see and use.
As you have found out, the 1067 speed RAM will not work in your year and model iMac.
You need the 1333 speed RAM.
If, you can return the RAM for a refund, do it!
If not, try online Mac RAM source and seller Crucial memory. They have a table that matches your Mac to the correct and reliable RAM. You may need to contact them to see whether or not they ship to South Africa, though.
If Crucial dpesn't work out, here's the specs for your year and model iMac that you need to seek out and purchase.
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    Good Luck!

  • Macbook pro default maximum screen size does not cover the bottom inch

Kind of frustrated by my new macbook pro.
At the bottom of the screen, there's the icon bar (icon dock), which is about inch height. I adjusted it to smaller size, about half inch. This is what I did, not sure if related to my problem.
At the beginning, I thought it was Safari's problem. Later I found all programs has the problem. I'll use Safari as example to describe the problem though.
When I open Safari, it does not expand to the bottom inch of the screen, as if the icon dock prevents it expanding to the icon bar area of original icon bar size (i.e., inch, not half inch I'm using), and as if there was a line at the bottom inch. I click the plus sign (maximum screen), it still leave the inch uncovered. However, if I use full screen modle, Safari would covers the whole screen.
when not in full screen model, I can drag the bottom edge of Safari, but can only drag to the virtual icon bar line (at bottom inch position). When bottom edge is at the virtual line, the drag arrow is single direction pointing to up. However, I could move Safari to lower and cover the bottom inch area (with icon bar on the top), and then drag the top edge to make it cover all screen area.
What makes more annoying is if a new tab automatically opens, Safari will goes to the size with the bottom inch uncovered. This problem does not happen if program runs in full screen model.
I tried a few programs, all have such problem. Looks to me default maximum screen size excludes the bottom inch (because by default that area is supposed to be occupied by icon bar although I changed the size or just simply hide the icon bar).
Anyone know why? How to solve the problem? TIA.

    called Apple, the solution is:
    1, turn on sound
    2, shutdown
3, press and hold these four keys the same time: left option, left command, R, and P
4, press and release power button to restart
5, after first starting chime sound, continue hold those four keys
6, after second starting chime sound, release keys
this resets some settings --- not sure what is reset though.

I was cleaning it and when I turn it on again there's this dark spot in the bottom left hand corner and I was like what? So I rebooted my device and it was still there. Weird things happen at factories. After onboxing my new phone I took the plastic off and it had a small fingerprint on the side. I didn't even touch the phone.

The dark bar is caused by the option "Show metadata below image".
Check the settings for the metadata overlays in Grid view (basic and expanded) by clicking the little "badge" icon below the Browser and selecting "Edit". Is the filename still enabled in the list? And in a high enough position to have precedence for other metadata tags, if the space does not suffice to show all selected tags?

  • TS3694 Trying to update iPhone 5 to latest OS. Now the screen is dark except for the iTunes icon and an icon showing the charger cable pointing to the icon. Bricked out at that point.

Tried to update iPhone 5 to latest OS. When I looked at the phone a while later, the screen was dark except for the iTunes icon in the middle of the screen and another icon showing the charger cable and an arrow point to the iTunes icon. Now I'm bricked out of the phone. When I hold down the power button after the screen goes completely dark, the Apple logo appears, then the iTunes icon I described.

    Hi Aphthonius,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you only see the "connect to iTunes" screen on your iPhone, this means that the device is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. The information and steps in this article can help further:

  • When I double click my IPAD screen there are apps at the bottom. How can I remove them?

When I double click my IPAD screen I have apps at the bottom how can I remove them?

If you are running iOS 6 or iOS 5, those apps are the recently used apps in the recents tray. You don't need to remove then from there, but if you want to do so, you have to close them. You do that by holding down on one of the app icons until they all wiggle, then tap the red minus sign to close the app. Do that to every app that you want to close. Tap the home button when you are done.

Do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.

You can run the Apple Hardware Test.
I agree with Carolyn. If that doesn't show anything, Apple has more comprehensive tests. Call an Apple Store and make an appointment with the "genius" bar (free). I don't think an SMCReset is going to help in this situation, but if it was my Mac, I'd try it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • When I'm playing music from my laptop on my Apple TV, I'd like to shrink the album on the screen so it's in the bottom corner, not filling the screen.

When I'm playing music from my laptop on my Apple TV2, I'd like to shrink the album on the screen so it's in the bottom corner, not filling the screen.

I don't believe that's possible. It will either fill the screen, or will show a thumbnail when the screensaver is on (disappearing after a few seconds)

  • Dust/Dirt/Dark patch behind the screen?!

I am certain that this has appeared today, and seems to be a small dark patch of something behind the screen. It is not a dead or stuck pixel but a small dark patch almost in the centre of the screen.
I have tried cleaning the screen with the provided cloth and a small amount of water but it does seem to be behind it, I just don't understand how!

Time Machine will create a complete backup, but you can't boot from TM. For instance, so your drive crashes. You can attach an external FW drive and boot from that. I know you used to not be able to boot from a USB drive, but I don't know if Apple changed that. I would check that out. If you can boot from a USB drive, then you're all set. Otherwise, you'd need a FW interface, found on most enclosures.
You can use Super Duper! without paying first, but you don't get the scheduling option. You can do everything else.
For the external drive, use Disk Utilty, select your external disk, Choose partition, choose 1 partition (if you want one), select Options, and choose GUID partition table. Then click apply. It has to be GUID to boot with Intel Macs.
So say you get your computer back wiped. You boot from your external drive, launch Super Duper, then copy the clone back to your internal drive, and you are back to where you left off. No loss of data. I've used SuperDuper! for a couple years now and it's saved my life a couple times.

  • 20" iMac screen gets very light at the bottom.

I just got a new 20" iMac and the screen appears to get lighter and washed out towards the bottom half of the screen. So bad that for example in the itunes library it is supposed to alternate from blue to white, but at the bottom of the screen it looks completely white. Is my screen defective or is this a common thing?

Both. My 20" iMac at work has the same problem. It is common on the ALU 20" iMacs and yes I would say it's defective. Apple may not agree though.

  • Phone screen is white all along the bottom

I purchased a Blackberry curve 3G on contract on 10 December from Carphone Warehouse. This is only 3 weeks ago so within my 28 day warranty period.
I picked up my phone this morning and noticed that the bottom right hand corner was white. To try to rectify the problem I then turned it off but the problem got worse and the white spread all along the bottom so the icons are not visible.
I then spoke to carphone warehouse on numerous occasions over the afternoon and then in the end visited the store where I purchased it. I am very unhappy with the service I received from carphone warehouse who informed me that I had smashed the screen myself.  I could not see any mark on the screen at all, and nor could anyone else in my family. I have never dropped the phone, put pressure on it and I kept it in a case over fear of damaging it because I am tied into a 24 month contract. They could not offer me a replacement whilst they sent it away, which would take 10-14 days and I would have to pay £160 for a new screen.
Please if anyone could offer me any help or advise I would be very grateful.

There are no more user troubleshooting steps available. Make an appointment at any Apple store. Sounds like a hardware failure, & if so you will be offered an out of warranty exchange. Cost is US $149.
