Screen problem on macbook?

The screen on the macbook goes white when it is set at certain angles. Is this a common problem? Is there warranty for this?

There may be a cable or other circuit in the process of failure, behind the issue you observe.
If the computer still has an Applecare plan in effect, the item is covered. The hinge area of the display is where the issue may be based in that a cable flexes. Also an inverter may be involved. As complex as these are, they may work a decade without failure.
The issue is a repair interval, and most any authorized Apple trained service provider with specialists can repair this and check other possibilities of a cause; an expert usually will do this without secondary effects or damages that a novice may create in a learning process of an attempt at DIY repairs.
You can get an idea of the complexity (level of difficulty, etc) by checking into the topic; also the iFixit.com site is one of the online places to view a repair guide, for some idea on what each part may take to replace. What most of these do not tell, is how to actually troubleshoot the exact cause of failure. So, a DIY may replace one part or two, while leaving the failed item behind. Or someone may short out some major part in the process.
An Apple Store with Genius bar may be able to help diagnose the issue, and provide an estimate; in some locations this may be a free service. You'd need to set an appointment prior to a scheduled visit.

I'm pretty sure that the way these are front glasses are constructed is; there is a front glass w/ a black mask and that assembly is glued to the back.

So probably what you did was to cause the adhesion between the mask and the front glass to separate. It's probably possible to re-adhere the two back together but I wouldn't attempt it if you weren't very versed in such repairs.

Yah, so messing with it more would cause problems with the screen itself and then you would have problems.

Screen problem on macbook air mid 2011

Hello,
I have a macbook air 2011 which I use almost all day long every day. It's about 1.5 years but the laptop is good conditions.
The last couple of days a problem with the screen arises. When I move the screen up/down to change position, I see a subtle color change. I took a video using a camera [1].
The screen becomes blue-ish with white stripes for a couple of seconds. It's awkward. I'd like to know if it's a hardware problem known and if it's dangerous. Doesn't bother me yet but I'm kinda worried about possible problems in the next future :-/

The problem looks to me to be anything but "subtle". It looks very obvious, and it appears to be a hardware issue, as if one of the RGB segments are skewed when you move the screen. Perhaps a connector or circuit failure. If the unit is still under AppleCare coverage, I would take it in for diagnosis for sure. If not, I suppose it would depend on the cost to remedy and by position to deal with it, but I would still want it diagnosed. It is reminisent of a problem I once had with a Toshiba laptop I had 20 years ago. Eventually the display failed altogether and I could only use it with an external monitor.

Screen problem in macbook PRO retina 15"

When I boot the computer in cold (after teen or more hours without use) the screen vibrates two or three minutes and then the screen stabilizes. This happens to me since a month ago. After the vibrations the computer works fine. If I connect one additional screen, this looks good from the start. How I can fix this problem? Thanks

Might just be a GPU or OS X 'glitch' - it's a new one that I've not read of on this board. The best thing that you can probably do is to take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them take a look at it. Let it sit for the ten or so hours before you take it in so that you can duplicate the problem for them.
No idea why you're having the problem - or why you don't have it when connected to an external monitor.

Screen problem with MacBook Pro 15 inch, mid 2011

I did not turn off my computer last night before going to sleep. This morning, when I "woke" it up, the screen turned to negative colours. I restarted my computer, and since then the screen has stayed pitch black. The computer seems to turn on fine, I can hear the hard drive running.
I did some research online: I already tried to reset the SMC and Pram and nothing worked. I am thinking of setting up a monitor to find out if it is a screen or a GPU problem. Any suggestion, advice, tip?

You are on the right track. If the monitor display is black, then the GPU is the problem. If the monitor display is normal, then the MBP display is faulty.
You did try the F2 key (brightness)?

External screen problems with macbook pro

Hi Guys,
I have recently connected my macbook pro to an external screen via HDMI and am having a weird issue. When the MB is open, it perfectly displays on the external screen. But when I shut the MB, it displays the picture on the external screen for about 5 seconds, then turns off, then turns on again and continues this until I open the MB again.
WHat is going on? Am i missing something?

Something that's running on your machine (or something that's connected to it) is preventing it from sleeping when you close its built-in display. It should sleep and stay asleep as soon as that display is closed, unless you are running it in clamshell mode:

Does the computer sleep properly when you close its display if the external monitor is not connected to it? Does the monitor have a USB cable that connects to the computer, in addition to its video cable?

Apple service centre employee told me that they do not have this 14 day offer in India.
And My mac book pro is taken in by Service centre people to run test etc and I will be informed the next day if they accept it as a fault or not ?

This sounds to me like a fairly common Inverter Fault.
It is not the screen that needs replacing by the sounds of it,
It sounds like either the inverter board or the inverter cable needs replacing.
My understanding is that inverter / inverter cable repairs aren't too expensive, but not too cheap!
Obviously your best way to find out how much it would cost to be repaired would be to take it in to an Apple Store, as I have never had to have one replaced myself, but the information I'm providing, is based on what I've read elsewhere.

Hi, i had the exact same problem and a searched google for any suggestions. In the end I just very gently scratched it off.

White/Gray screen problem on my MacBook

My early 2008 MacBook (white) had the White/Gray screen problem and i don't know how to fix it since it's my first mac. I'm currently running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.5) and this happened when it was low battery a few days before it had the problem and i kept it low on battery of about 2 days and when i plugged it back in and attached a Seagate external hard disk then i powered it on it's just white/gray and I've 5 mins. and still white/gray. Can' see the picture you post, so not sure how your screen is, though resetting SMC as well as NVRAM(PRAM) could solve the problem.

Early MacBook Pro (Week 8) screen problems

Hi Everyone,
My MacBook is working great except for the hissing/whine from the screen - I know it is related to the screen because when I change the brightness to low the whine goes away - the screen also flickers when the brightness is down low. This MacBook is one of the earlier models from production (Week 8). I've been putting up with the whine because I use this Mac for work. I am wondering how long it takes to get your Mac back after sending it for service. Many thanks. I'll be calling Apple Service tonight.

I've had the same problem with a hissing/high pitch sound since I got my MacBook. It usually only happens with it is coming out of sleep or a low power state; which makes me wonder if the screen systems are drawing too much power. When I adjust the screen brightness to a lower level, the hiss goes away. I haven't had any other screen problems. However, sometimes the ambientlight sensor has a hard time remembering my custom keybaord backlight settings. Just some minor problems, but eventually I would like to see these issues resolved.

Sudden macbook pro screen problem after genius bar "repair"

I took my 15" early 2011 MBP (still under 3 year applecare) to the genius bar after I discovered the battery had swollen up and was pushing the trackpad up. They replaced this and I also asked them to reapply the thermal paste as I felt like it was running hot causing the fans to increase with relatively little load (apparently there was a problem with the early 2001 MBPs and thermal paste which is well documented elsewhere). Machine worked great when they handed it back to me in the store.
But when I turned it on a couple of days later, serious problems! First there was a messed up blue / grey / purple / green screen with lines all over it & it didn't boot. I felt like the DVD-drive noise it usually gives sounded lower pitched than usual too but I could be imagining that.. I turned it on & off several times and each time a similar (but slightly different) screen. I tried various different "startup key" combinations eg safe boot, hardware test without success.
However after I reset the NVRAM I got just a grey screen which then booted into snow leopard. It could've been a coincidence that this happened after the NVRAM reset, I don't know. Anyway, the mac is sort of working - great!
BUT the screen colours are still messed up. Looks like what I'd imagine you'd get if you tried to run in 16 colours. There's also some flickering near the bottom of the screen. Weirdly though, when I click and hold on some items, eg in the dock, the colours seem more normal again on parts of the screen.
Examples below:
1. colours look terrible here!
2. the blue triangle isn't right at all. (note the curvy lines are just an artifact from the camera)
3. however when I click there is is some improvement to some of the colours on bits of the screen eg the dock items (except the logic icon which still looks wrong) - I don't think the big circle in the middle is right (that's not a flash, it's on the screen).
I've tried to run the hardware test by holding down D on start up and aside from taking longer to boot, I don't get any options to run tests.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?? As the colours are correct sometimes, I'm inclined to think it's a video card problem rather than a screen problem. System profiler says I have and AMD Radeon HD 6490M & Intel HD 3000. I'm just wondering if they could've somehow damaged the video card when reapplying the thermal paste. But I really don't know.
I will book another genius bar appointment but there's a 1 week wait and it's kind of annoying!

There's no recall for early 2011 machines - only for mid-2010 models.
But you're right - there's a growing thread here of hose having problems with the early 2011 GPU. Odd that it doesn't seem to affect those with late 2011 models.
