Screen randomly flickers (horizontal lines) -- Is it hardware or software?

In the last week my macbook screen has started to flicker...
This happens when I'm surfing, working on photos, and doing other tasks...
The the flickering seems very horizontal and is completely random in the time (mostly only for a second or two a few times a day) and the amount (less then 10% of the screen 90% of the time).
I cannot tell of it's hardware or software.
What can I do to solve this issue?
*Are there any questions you could ask that could help troubleshoot this problem?*

To my experience, it is hardware problem. Screen flickering is a complex problem because it can be caused by the logic board, LCD screen or inverter. Most of the time the problem is caused by the video components on the logic board. You can connect your MacBook to an external display to narrow down the root cause of your screen flickering problem.

  • Problem of 5800 screen comes in horizontal lines

    Dear nokia team,
i have a wide spreading problem in my & similar phones nokia 5800
after i updated the firmware the screen come into horizontal lines doesn't show anything once i lock the screen and reopen the it again , the problem began when the mobile is in a room with cold temprature, when i warm it it works again,
but now the problem became more diffficult, not only in air conditioned rooms, but all the time ,
Please help me with the final solution ,
beware that my firmware version begin with 60.0... the latest one

Perhaps a reset of SMC may help it, the system management controller is a power manager of a sort and maybe if something is not seriously wrong, that could do. Yet screen resolution and other issues can be addressed by a reset of the NVRAM in a different procedure, formerly known as a PRAM reset.
However there are hardware circuits that also may be the cause of such symptom, and I'm not sure how you'd test for that. The computer shipped with a test of some sort on the original boot install disc, that could check some hardware items and try to repair the hard drive, etc. There may be display hardware troubles behind the symptoms you'd noted and if you can eliminate the software probability, then the possibility of a hardware issue may be the answer. A few parts could be user-replaced given experience and skill in doing these kinds of things, and there are guides to look into at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Laptop
Read though and see if there is an indication a reset may help.

Hopefully the a reset will help, as a troubleshooting measure or to eliminate ailments. A reset of SMC has been said to help in some cases because it also resets the power to the graphic card, so that is a possibility. And NVRAM may be another thing to try after SMC.

  • Black screen on startup; horizontal lines on screen precede crash

A few days ago my Mac Book Pro screen freaked out. Specifically, it had multicolored horizontal lines all over, but underneath I could see a dark grey dialogue box telling my to restart the computer.
Now, about two thirds of the time, when I try to start up the screen stays black and it does not make any startup noises but the power light comes on steady. One time this was accompanied by a beeping tone that beeped in sets of three. The other one third of the time it starts up fine.
Once it shut itself down after the horizontal lines appeared again.
Once it has frozen while on the screensaver and I had to manually shut it down.
Any idea what might be causing this? My computer is still under warrantee but I live over an hour and a half from the nearest apple store.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video chip, you might be developing this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
The beeps and kernel panic do seem to point to a RAM problem. If you replaced the original Apple RAM with 3rd party RAM, try the Apple RAM if you still have it and see if this cures the problem. Otherwise, try reseating it as described earlier.
Here is an article that may be of help:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Finally, since you are so far from an Apple Store, call Apple on the phone and explain your problems. It's possible that they could refer you to an AASP in your area that could evaluate your machine and save you a trip. It's also possible they could determine that you have some sort of hardware problem and could send you a box to ship your Mac to the Repair Depot. In any event, be sure to contact Apple while your warranty is in effect and get a case number, especially if you are getting close to the end of your Applecare.
    Good luck!

  • I'm using Win 7 and Firefox Screen fills with horizontal lines,

Had no problems with previous versions of FF. I updated with FFv4 several weeks ago and have my browser screen continually being filled with horizontal lines. I can remove some of them by using the vertical scroll bar but they return when the display contains a lot of text. Sometimes when display is pictures or videos I am spared. This never occurred before FFv4. If a screen contains a few pictures and is engulfed in lines I can scroll it with my mouse and some pictures reappear but there are still lines over the rest of the display. I use an antivirus (BitDefender) and scan regularly. I also use Windows Defender for protection which was recommended by my AV manufacturer.
Sometimes of late I have noticed that when the display is no maximized the problem doesn't happen as often. I use a 19" monitor.
So far tonight while writing this note I haven't experienced a problem but the window is not set to max.

I had this problem as well. For me, the solution was to disable the two latest add-ons I had installed: Cooliris and HP Detect (I have a Pavilion dm1z). The issue with horizontal lines went away after restarting the browser.

  • Flickering horizontal lines on new MacBook Pro

I took a ~3 month old MacBook Pro into a store yesterday for some flashing horizontal lines.  Upon inspection, the Genius technician told me was from a cracked LCD.  I was told the repair is apparently not covered by our AppleCare coverage and could not be a defect, but that it had to be due to an impact coming from the lower right front of the display (above the keyboard).  Yet, this is a new machine that doesn't leave my daughter's desk.

    Hi
I had something similar about a year ago.
Book a visit to an Apple Store / Genius bar.

  • Flickering horizontal lines across the screen

My Toshiba LCD TV has a thin black line going across the screen. TV is just a year old and is not under warranty. I've seen some comments that the LCD panel needs replacing. Is this my only option? Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Our Toshiba Regza  Cinemax TV has been acting up, it has shadowing, sometimes horizontal and vertical lines. They are worst on the left side of screen.  Anyone know what part may need to be replaced.  This has been doing this for quite a while, it comes and goes.  Paid almost $3,000 for this piece of crap it should have lasted more than five years.

  • S10 lcd screen randomly flickers/glitches + battery issue

Hello Everyone, I have a Lenovo s10 4231 laptop which is my friends. I recently had to replace the LCD on it due to the old one being cracked. I replaced it with a new unit.
However, now that I've done that, Ive noticed that SOMETIMES I will see some pixelation in random parts of the screen, and the entire lcd will sometimes flicker or flash something for a split second. Im not sure what causes it, I tried to test to see if high processor usage would do it, but that wasnt the case.
Im completely baffled as to what's causing this, I dont want to blame it on the new lcd i put in, since the screen picture and clarity are PERFECT.
I'll just see random pixelation/glitches, and other times the whole screen will flash/glitch for a fraction of a second. and it doesnt do it all the time, its very random!
My other problem is that the battery will not charge to 100% when the a/c is plugged in, it stays around 96/97% and doesnt go any higher. is this normal?
I appreciate any input on these issues, I dont want to have to order another LCD =/

The behaviour of your LCD screen is certainly abnormal. Maybe there is some loose contact or it is not sitting properly. As for the battery, it seems to be a normal response if it is left in the netbook for sometime. If you unplug the battery for a while and put it in again, it will charge to 100% the next time. Don't know why it is like that. Make sure it is unplugged when everything is off.

  • My screen randomly flickers to a blue screen then back to normal.  Not a cable issue since it doesn't happen when I move the screen.

    Thanks

I have done that several times.  In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly.  I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time.  It never does.  After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying.  I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not.  I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine.  I know I got a bad phone.  Verizon just does not listen.  It is a bad phone.  I just want a new phone that works properly.  Is that too much to ask?  I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one.  Why oh why do I have to spend hours of my time on the phone, in the store, on the computer, trying to rectify this?  It shouldn't be this difficult!  Help please!!!

  • Screen Sharing (10.6 viewing 10.5) shows a screen of horizontal lines

I use Screen Sharing 1.1.1 on 10.6.4 to access my iBook G4 and my wife's Power Mac G4 (both running 10.5.8).
A week ago I attempted to view the G4 screen. Instead of the normal display, Screen Sharing showed a screen of colored horizontal lines of varying heights. There were a few random blocks with different color lines. Nothing on the screen was recognizable.
The same display problem just occurred with an iChat screen sharing session (iChat 5.0.3 viewing iChat 4.0.8 on the G4). Restarting the G4 cleared up the problem.
My search of Apple Discussions has not turned up a report of this problem.
    -- Ward

    Hi,
I have not seen this either.
I have 10.5.8 on my G4 and a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.
I have heard of issues and can recreate them if my G4 has a second Monitor/screen connected and Mirroring is not On as the iChat Screen Share tries to fit both on to the Shared view (i.e two Screens wide instead of only one.)
I presume the Screen Sharing app would be the same.
Do the G4 users have the Screen Zoomed or any other option set in Universal Access ?
Does changing the resolution in System Preferences > Displays change anything ?
