Screen randomly turns B&W when VGA is connected.

Hello folks. I'm having this problem where at random times (usually after the 2nd or 3rd reconnect) where the output via the VGA connection on my Macbook Pro turns black and white.
For example, I plug my computer into my TV via VGA, watch a movie and it works fine. Then I disconnect my computer to use it for another purpose, then go back to it later and plug in the vga port and the display on my TV is black and white. Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't help, I have to restart the computer to solve this issue.
I am certain this is a Snow Leopard problem as I never had this issue previously with Leopard. Do you guys know how I can fix this? I'm sure it's a software issue.
I will reference the following threads as they appear to address same issue I'm having, with the only discrepancy being a DVI connection as opposed to VGA.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  • Screen randomly turns off or dims

    I have an iBook G4, and every now and again the screen randomly turns off. It doesn't respond to pressing and holding the power button, the only way I can turn it back on is by both taking out the battery and unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, putting the battery back in and restarting it. If I put the power lead in before restarting then the display switches off almost instantly during boot up.
    Other times the screen randomly dims really dark so that you can only just see outlines, in this situation it responds to pressing the power button and then enter to shut it down, and then after booting it back up it's fine ...until the next time.
    The problems happen as often as every five minutes on some days and then not at all on others. Both occur when using the battery AND power lead, often (but not always) when the power cord is moved. Also I can get my power cord to flicker between green and orange if I wiggle it - not a good idea I know, I don't do it regularly
    I've tried resetting the PMU with no success. Also I've tried swapping my battery and power lead with a friend, they had no problems using mine (and couldn't replicate the green-orange flickering), and I still had problems using theirs.
    I read someone else's topic with suggested that the problem could be deficient soldering on the DC-In Board, so I've had a look. I'm no expert but the soldering looks ok to me, except one of the 3 metal legs connecting the actual socket bit to the board (the one which would be at the bottom under the yellow tape in http://www.macrecycling.com/images/products/922-6254.gif ) is looking a bit black and has discoloured the yellow tape black immediately on top of it. Looking at the circuit board though, this leg doesn't seem to connect to anything!
    I've read numerous topics regarding similar situations and popular diagnosis include problems with:
    * battery/power lead (I'm pretty confident it's not this)
    * DC-In Board
    * GPU
    * Inverter cable
    * Inverter
    * Backlight
    From the information I've given does anyone know what is most likely the cause?
    I'm a poor student, my iBook's well past it's warranty, and I hear repairs start in the £100 region (also I've rumours the apple stores have stopped taking in iBooks for repairs now). So home repair is pretty much my only option at the moment, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    I had the same trouble, but today my iBook died after draining the battery. It just drained it and it did not charged the batt while connected, also the iBook makes a small buzz sound while connected (and it does not do so while powered by the batt).
    I researched and found that it is the DC board's fault, because it failed at charging while working fine on pure battery power.
    i confirmed because powering up always worked perfectly while on battery power, (just as in your case).
    The blackness you describe is possibly a short circuit, and you should look into it as quick as possible, before you get to a situation like mine.

  • MacBook Pro screen randomly turns black on me for no reason while I'm using it? What's wrong with my MacBook?

    I have a MacBook Pro from 2009 and the screen randomly turns black on me for no reason while I'm using it? It takes anywhere from 5 seconds to 1 minute to turn back on and no matter what I do it just has to fix itself so idk if it is going in to sleep mode or what. Anyone know the issue? Thanks.

    Run through them and stop after #16 or if the problem stops, or if something tells you something severe (like hardware test giving a error)
    If you can backup your personal data off the machine, you should do that first.
    Hardware issues we cant' fix, only a few things may fix it.
    Software issues we can fix, but right now we don't know what is causing your issue as we can't see it obviously.
    So your going through a process of elimination to try to give us a clue what's the problem and then we can advise a course of action.
    If you feel this is way over your head, then just make a appointement with Apple and/or your local PC/Mac specialist.

  • HP pavillion beats screen randomly turns off

    So this Christmas i was very excited to get this laptop, and it cost me $600. Overall, this is an outstanding laptop, aside that the graphics card could be better and the sound quality from the speakers isn't as good as I expected it to be. Anyway, back to my question. I have been using the laptop all day long, and so far, everything is working normally. However, at times, randomly; without any notice, the screen goes black and it basically freezes. This happend once while I was typing, and once when I was watching a video. I have been active both times that it turns off, and the battery is never near death when it does this. While the screen is frozen, I cannot do anything with it; only turn it off. And to give you closure, I did try turning the  backlit keyboard on and off; no changes whatsoever, and I also tried pressing the Caps Lock button to find a resonse; and, as presumed, no lights turning on, nothing. Like I said, when these pauses happen, I am highly active and the battery is charged. If it helps, I haven't experienced them WHILE the laptop was charging. It's a shame that such a great laptop has a simple flaw that could probably be easily fixed.
    Thanks for listening,

    I understand that your notebook computer randomly powers off to a black screen. Does this happen when the AC adapter is plugged in? Does this issue occur in Safe Mode? I would be happy to help you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number. In addition, it will also help if you indicate which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!

    Hi, my iphone 4 randomly turned off a few hours ago, it is not being recognised on itunes and it won't charge at all. To make matters worse, the home button has been broken for several months. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    You're going to need a functioning home button in order to fix this. Take it to an Apple Store.

  • Macbook screen randomly turns blue, then restarts

    This has happened twice and it is frustrating. I'll be working away as usual, then my Macbook's screen suddenly turns blue (like the start-up blue before your desktop loads) and then it behaves just as if it restarted. The first time Firefox didn't remember any tabs, but the second time it did.
    I have done a little research and saw that people are saying it has something to do with Rosetta apps. Anyone have a solution apart from saving my work frequently?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    That is odd behavior, and I'm not sure what would cause it. You might try a PRAM reset and see if that helps:

  • POST fails when VGA is connected to GTX680

    Hi all,
    I have an issue with my new MSI N680GTX Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC:
    I've got the main screen (a TV) connected via an A/V receiver using HDMI.
    My HTPC casing (a Thermaltake DH 202 Touch) has a small 7", built-in, LCD panel (1024x768) with a VGA connector.
    When I plug in the LCD panel's VGA connector (using the supplied VGA-DVI converter), the PC fails to POST.
    As soon as I unplug the VGA-DVI converter and reset the machine, it POSTs and boots fine.
    If I then hot-plug the LCD panel, the LCD panel works fine as well. It just won't POST with the VGA cable connected.  :(
    When the PC hangs during post, the main board (an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe) shows "B2" on the Q-Code readout for a long time. Every 26 seconds or so, the PC speaker beeps once. After about 5 or 6 beeps or so, the Q-Code indicator changes state a couple of times and finally shows "A0", which it normally does when the PC boots normally. But in this case there is still no image on either screen and the PC does not seem to boot up.
    According to the manual, "B2" stands for "Legacy Option ROM Initialization" and "A0" stands for "IDE initialization is started".
    Note:
    This exact same setup used to work fine with my old graphics card, an EVGA GeForce GTX 285 SC, before I changed it for this new one. All other components are still the same.
    I have updated my main board's BIOS and I've looked for a firmware update for the graphics card, but was unable to find one.
    I have tried connecting a normal LCD monitor (1280x1024) to the DVI-I port, using a VGA cable and the supplied VGA-DVI converter, which worked perfectly.
    One thing I did notice was that the DVI-I port is the primary port during POST (why?  ). I therefore tried to find out if the primary port can be changed, but I could not find any information on how to do this.
    Does anyone have any ideas how to get this setup working normally? Could the maximum (native) resolution of the built-in LCD panel be the problem?
    Thanks in advance for your insight,
    Erik.

    - Ask the Operator before
    - Use plugs with a internal switch/contact for auto detect
    - Use current loop,IEPE, TC sensors that have open/shortcut detection
    - use DAQ hardware with 'intelligent' connectors ... the automobile industry here use it a lot.... higher channel cost pays against robust, fast,.., ..... setup
    You can't make it fool proof because fools are so genious
    For multiplexed DAQ cards, one migth test with internal mux channels (AGND,AIx,Vref,AIx)  and measure something like settle time and make an 'educated' guess of the source impedance
    Yeah... ghosthing is not a bug... it's a feature
    wonder if there is patent claim:  using the residual charge of the sample and hold capacitor in conjunction at least two known input channels to detect a open third input channel .....

  • Has anyone else had the issue of the the screen randomly flashing black only when using Messages app in landscape?

    I have been having an issue with the screen flashing black for several seconds then turning back on. This olny occurs in the Messages app and only in landscape mode. I have never noticed the issue in any other app. The issue is 100% repeatable. Has anyone else had this issue or know of any solutions to what seems to be a bug?
    -iPhone 5s running iOS 7.1
    KCM

    I think this is an issue with the phone's proximity sensor (the one that turns the screen off when you hold it up to your ear). It's a bug that seems to occur when you switch to another app (any app) while still on a phone call. You'll notice in Messages that the screen goes dark when you move your thumb over the earpiece/iSight camera, but not when you move your other thumb.
    Simplest solution is to force-quit the Messages app (double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app). The problem should resolve itself when you restart Messages.

  • 2010 Mac Pro OSX 10.6.8 Screens Randomly Turn Off, Wont Come Back On

    My work computer has been having this issue for some time now. A few times a day my screens will just go black, the power lights on them will stay on, but nothing will show up on the screens, causing me to force restart my machine and lose progress on whatever I was working on. The tower is still running when it happens, and if I am listening to music it will still play for a little while, but the screens will never come back on.
    When I force shut down my machine, it will take a few minutes before I can restart it. The tower will turn on, the chime will sometimes sound, other times wont, and the screens still remain black.. After a while it will boot up like normal again.
    I've tried resetting the PRAM and some other things, but I really dont know what is happening or how to fix it. I run duel screens, and they both just shut off, could they be the problem? why would both turn off if they are?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Drew

    Could be that your graphics card is overheating.  It might be clogged with dust and needs cleaning.

  • Screen randomly turned white!

    I was playing Pac the Man X on my Powerbook earlier today as I frequently do when something rather bizarre happened. Pac Man suddenly froze, and my screen began to turn white. It stayed normal for a second after Pac Man froze, but the went to the white. I wasn't straight to white, but like a jumpy version of a fade to white PowerPoint transition (best analogy I could think of). I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary before this happened, and I have never had any trouble with Pac Man. I wasn't sure what was going on, which made me somewhat nervous, so I immediately did a force restart (command, control, power key). After the restart, my computer started up fine. I went straight into disk utility and backed up my hard drive onto my external 500gb WD drive (the new My Book Premium) just in case there was an actual problem. It would be rather devastating for me to loose my 7,000 song library among other things. Since the reboot, everything has been running without a hitch. The whole thing happened almost 6 hours ago.
    Now that I have explained the problem, I will give as much background information as possible so everyone will know exactly what is going on. Last night (6/29), I downloaded the 10.4.7 update, the iTunes 6.0.5 update, the QuickTime 7.1.2 update, and the iPod updater 2006-06-28 all through software update. After the updates were finished downloading and installing, I chose the option for shutdown instead of restart and went to bed. This morning (Friday morning actually, 6/30) I started up my computer, logged in, launched mail and AIM, and pulled up my Dashboard. Before heading off to work, I closed the screen to put my PowerBook to sleep as I always do. I noticed that the sleep light did not come on at all, so I opened the computer back up only to be greeted be a black screen. The computer was still on and running, but the screen was not coming up. I moved the mouse around with no response. I then did a force restart, hit the shutdown button on the login window, and then left for work. When I returned home, I started up my PowerBook, launched Mail and AIM, poked around the iTunes store a bit (got the 2 free singles), and fired up Pac the Man X. After I had been playing for a few minutes, the white screen thing happened.
    Now for the tech specs of my situation: I have a 15", 1.25ghz PowerBook G4. It has 1gb of RAM installed. I have a Logitech MX900 Bluetooth mouse connected wirelessly (obviously), as well as a 500gb Western Digital My Book Premium drive connected through the USB2 port on the left side. I also have a Sony 19" external display connected to the DVI port running in a dual screen setup. I am running OS 10.4.7 and had Mail, AIM, iTunes (not playing music), and Pac the Man X open and running at the time of the 'event'. I connect to the Internet wirelessly through my Airport Extreme Base Station. I do not know if the Sony display was affected because it was turned off at the time.
    All right, I believe that that is all the information that anyone could ever need on my situation (and the most times I have used 'that' in a sentence). Sorry if it is a little overwhelming, I just want to make sure I cover all the bases. Is this a precursor to a major problem, or am I just being paranoid? What caused it? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I go ahead and have Apple look at it before my warranty runs out? I have really haven't had any major problems with my PowerBook and would miss it terribly should something happen. If anyone can help me here, I would really, really appreciate it. Also, if I somehow managed to leave out any necessary information, please let me know. I looked briefly but did see any similar posts; so sorry if this has already been posted. Thank you in advance for any help.

  • Screen randomly turns blue

    Lately my screen turns blue all of the sudden (out of the blue, ha, ha) I can't see anything. It does this right in the middle of my using it. It does it on any program, internet, iphoto, etc. I know the computer is still working, as occasionally I can see lightly what the screen is supposed to be showing, only it is covered with the blue screen. I know it is not the monitor. Any ideas?

    My Mac Mini has been doing this as well. I've got it plugged into a Pioneer receiver with an HDMI cable and then another HDMI cable going into my Samsung LCD TV. The majority of times I've seen this are when I come home from work, turn the TV on, and the screen is entirely blue or grey. It doesn't respond to keyboard commands or anything. Turning the TV off/on has no effect. Same with turning the receiver off/on.
    Today is the first time I've seen it turn blue/grey while I was using it. Music kept playing but the screen was entirely blue. I tried unplugging the HDMI cable from the Mac Mini and then plugged it back in but the same blue screen came up.
    In the end, the only way I've been able to fix the blue screen is to do a hard reboot (hold down the power button).
