Screen redraw issues

Hi everyone
My new Macbook appears to have screen redraw issues (as I've mentioned in other posts). It often does not redraw the screen quickly or smoothly. It may redraw the screen in bands from the top, or the Dock may come up in jerks. Also, the cursor often freezes, especially when switching from one app. to another, or after performing a function in an app (e.g. Save, or Delete in Finder). Messing around with the keyboard or trying another function often unfreezes the cursor again. It's frustrating.
I think it's probably a compatibility issue, since quite a few of the applications I transferred over from my iBook are not yet available as fat binaries ("universal" binaries). Yet they seem to work OK. I'll post about that separately.
If anyone else has experienced screen redraw issues, I'd be interested to hear about them. This machine should run much faster than my iBook, not much more slowly.

Thanks again, Shawn. I wasn't sure whether to post all the problems as one mess, or separately so people could search for them separately. I decided on separately, in case they weren't related, but mentioned the other bits in each post in case they were.
I myself searched under all these problems, but had little success. I don't know if that's an artefact of the Search or not. I suppose it depends on things like using "frozen cursor" or "freezing cursor". I certainly found more posts related to my problems when I read all the forum posts for MacBook Users. It took quite a while, but was more productive than searching. I'd rather not have to spend quite as much time on finding data, though.
Thanks again.

  • IDCS2 Screen Redraw issues

We're having screen redraw issues when panning and zooming pages. Getting screen anomolies and jittery display performance. It only happens when using InDesign, no other apps exhibit similar issues.
    PC specs are:
    WinXP Prop SP2
    Dell Optiplex GX620, 2GB RAM
ATI Radeon X600, 256MB Video Card
    Dual Dell 19" Flat Displays
Tried setting Display Performance slider in Prefs to middle setting and still getting redraw problems.
Is there a setting for the video card that might help?
    Thanks,

InDesign is known to have display issues with scrolling (white bars appearing where the edge of the screen used to be), although I don't believe I've ever seen it panning. As far as I know there is nothing you can do but grumble.
Not a lot of help, I'm afraid.

  • Screen redraw issues after update to 10.7.4

Anyone else seeing screen redraw issues since updating to 10.7.4? Suddenly, the zoom tool stops working or causes visual errors.

thank you FFS48, it really helped and might work fine as temporary solution. I was about to restore my OS from backup to 10.7.3 version... as booting from it made no errors. The latest 10.7.4 update filled my log filles with different error messages like:

which might be caused by iStatMenus as these log entries are allways next to iStat log entries.
I often need to access my Mac Pro using Back to my Mac from my MBP. Do you know will it still be possible having WiFi on MacPro off?
It is strange, that the latest update delivered more visible problems than benefits....
What I tried to solve the problem and that did not work:
    - Disable WiFi sync on iTunes (after reading some forums discussing similar problem)
    - Uninstalled Xcode (as some forums suggested)
It is some how related to WiFi and iOS devices that sync to that computer. Switching these iOS devices off - removes the problem, and I believe it should be reported to Apple.

  • Screen redraw / video card issue intel iMac

i've been having a screen redraw issue with an old-ish white intel core duo (not core 2 duo) iMac.
the screen will periodically show what i like to call screen dirt, and some of it is persistant.
i'm hoping it's something that doesn't require a visit to the apple store, as this machine is out of warranty...but it seems like it may.

  • Safari 3.0.4 window redraw issues

I recently updated to 10.5.2 and Safari 3.0.4 (5523.15) on my MacBook Pro (15", 2.4GHz). Ever since the update, I'm having screen redraw issues in Safari where artifacts are left on the browser window while I attempt to scroll vertically through a web page.
After playing around, I have discovered that if I use the vertical scrollbar, everything works properly. But if I use the touchpad scrolling (ie. via dragging two fingers on the touchpad), the window scrolls but it does not redraw properly leaving multiple copies of sentences smearing into each other making the page unreadable. The only way to clear is to use the scrollbar to scroll up and down and force the browser to redraw those portions of the window.
Has anyone else seen this issue and know of any work arounds. Up until this point, I have gotten very used to using the touchpad scrolling and it worked fine until the 10.5.2 update after which I'm getting this smearing if I scroll using the touchpad. =(

I had the same problem not only in Safari but in Finder as well. Serious it was too. It appeared after installing the 10.5.2 update. I got the advise from my local Mac dealer to reset the System Management Controller (SMC). I did as he said and now it works just fine

  • Performance Issues - Screen Redraw etc.?

I have a new MacBook Pro 15" (8GbRAM, 2 GHz i7) Using 30" Cinema Display, OS 10.7.2. I'm using Photoshop CS 5.1 (12.1 x64) Extended. After working for awhile I get performance lag -mostly drawing, cloning etc. Then the cursor starts behaving unpredictably -usually drawing slightly BELOW where the crosshairs are. Then the screen refreshes slows and the screen redraw occurs in very large blocks -VERY slowly. Reloading PShop doesn't help, but rebooting the laptop does solve the problem -until it happens again. In an earlier post I was advised that PShop CS4 was the cause (not compatible w/Lion). But I now have the latest version of Photoshop (my primary application).
    - In this situation, I would suspect corrupted PShop Prefs, but I don't think that's the case, as reboot solves the problem. It was also the exact same issue when I ran CS4.
    - Could this be an issue wuth using the 15" Macbook Pro with a 30" display? I was also advised that I could NOT upgrade the video card (soldered to motherboard) but this is not a MacBook Air.
    - RAM issue? I did upgrade to 8Gb -but I purchased quality RAM from a reputable dealer. I have had no crashes or other issues (other than the Photoshop issue. I will test the RAM.
    - Any know CS5 issues/bugs in this area?
    Thanks

I think you're seeing more of the 1.7 video driver bugs.  The cursor offset is a known one, along with some "cursor doesn't draw correctly" bugs.
You can try turning off OpenGL drawing in preferences to avoid many of the problems (don't know if that'll fix the cursor or not).
But the real fixes need to come from Apple fixing their display drivers.

  • 5S Screen Redraw/Refresh Issues iOS 8 & 8.0.2

Anyone experiencing partial/incomplete screen redraws, with bottom half of screen as just blank?
Since updating to iOS 8 and subsequently to iOS 8.0.2 on iPhone 5S, I been getting frequent incomplete screen refreshing/redrawing where I end up bottom 1/2 of screen is blank. Only occurs in normal (portrait) orientation. It occurs in both Apple apps and miscellaneous 3rd party apps. When using Mobile Safari, rotating phone orientation sometimes causes a refresh that will fill screen with missing 1/2 of page, sometimes it does NOT work and manually tapping URL refresh icon is required and sometimes more than once. As far other apps it is hit or miss as to encountering the incomplete screen draw and very random as to what will trigger an effective refresh to get the entire screen to redraw to completion - sometimes rotating phone orientation, sometimes backing out of screen or app all the way.
Upon experiencing this behavior after the iOS 8 upgrade, I did a hard reset of phone and set up as new, but the problem was still there. Upon upgrading to 8.0.2 and discovering the issue existed, soft reset and then hard reset phone to no avail either time.

    Hi SeekerJ,
If you are still having persistent display issues after a hard reset, you may want to make sure you have a current backup of your data in iTunes, then try restoring your iPhone to factory settings and testing it in that default condition to see if the issues persist before restoring your data. You may find the following article helpful:

  • Mac Pro 2007 with Nvidia 8800GT screen redraw problems on Mac OS 10.5.2

I seem to be having a slight screen redraw problem. Such as when grabbing the browser window and moving up and down it seems the redraw can't keep up,also seems problematic when watching flash or other video online. It does it in the finder too for windows listings or in icon view there is a fluttering or flashing back and forth, kind of like a white super split second flash when dragging the window box smaller or larger not as bad as when making smaller. Hard to describe but my original Ge-force that I pulled was not having these characteristics. I figure that the drivers need tweaking. In windows I am not getting these results. I have newer boot camp installed as well as the leopard graphics update done so I am trying to see if others are having a slight problem or maybe it is me.
Also I make certain it is not heat related as I monitor that and it does not matter at what temp it is.

Here's another similar experience -- and my solution.
I bought a Quad-core 2.8GHz (8GB RAM) Mac Pro in May and got the "better" Nvidia 8800GT. I thought I was happy, but there were redraw issues after sleeping and a display "roughness" I found annoying. Upgrading to OSX 10.5.4 didn't help.
I found it to be mostly absent on startup, but sleeping the Mac would bring it on. I.e., after sleep, the relatiionship between the 8800GT would be different than before. when I logged out and in again, the problem woud vanish. No what I expect from a "superior" graphics card. I ascribed it to funky drivers from Apple.
The store I bought the Mac from offered to swap for my suggestion of an ATI HD 3870, so I went for it about a week ago.
This card is far smoother than the 8800GT and just as fast in rendering benchmerks for graphics. (I'm not a gamer.) I am a happy camper! There is no stuttering, oddball redraw, or jerkiness as there had been with the 8800. It's perfect! Never mind that it may be 5% slower for gamers, it feels faster for my use.
BUT NOTE: As I now see from reading several forums, I wasn't alone is getting a screaming-Mimi at first! The first 3870 ran at nearly full fan speed at power-up. The speed changed a little with resolution changes on my big Mitsubishi CRT monitor, and actually stopped when I switched to 1080x1920 @ 72Hz! Then the fan would start and quit, start and quit randomly -- convincing me it was defective.
I returned this RED-shrouded unit and the store replaced it, this time with (randomly) a BLUE-shrouded unit. (Slightly lower serial.)
Bottom Line: This replacement 3870 is quiet as a mouse! Fan runs near-silently at startup and after hours of regular use in a 75ºF room. I get the distinct feeling that a bunch of cards with wonky fan controllers were built, and some of us got 'em.
Bad News: The ATI HD 3870 does NOT support multiple refresh rates under Windows XP-SP2 booting the Mac Pro, with or without Boot Camp drivers installed. No version of the ATI drivers fixes this, and ATI does not officially support Boot Camp yet. You can choose a resolution okay, but you're stuck at 60Hz refresh -- a pain for those of us who hate 60Hz flicker. (I like 100Hz refresh.)

  • Premiere Pro CC, Quadro 4000 and Screen Redraw bugs

Not sure if it's just the 7.1 update, but i think i started seeing it in the previous version.
When i start using transitions then my main UI screen redraw messes up. So for example pop a wipe onto some footage then the timeline bar doesn't move when playing and i cannot click the sequence footage elements. I can play in the monitor. If i guess where the close box is for the sequence and open the sequence again it redraws correctly.
I've updated the drivers to the latest versions and also confirmed on a different PC that the problem isn't there. So it's unique to my set up.
I'm running on Win 7 x64, 32GB. About the only recent change to my system was a 10Gbe card but i've duplicated the problem just with local drives.
In fact it's as simple as if i start up CC then click the project tab, media browser tab, info tab, effects tab the search box in the effects tab doesn't redraw fully.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
(I do have a decklink extreme in there but have got the output turned off at the moment - tried it on and off- same problem)
I really don't remember this happening in the past but it was the transitions that revealed it, and i don't normally use them.
    Help!
    cheers
    Paul

    Thanks for the update,
The question is how long for because i'm sure that my installation was fine, then stopped working. If you drag a transition onto the timeline does the time line still update, can you grab the timeline cursor and drag it back and forth.
We're not alone, there's another thread with what looks like the same issues
    cheers

  • Screen redraw jerky?

I've got an 2.4Ghz MBP running the latest version of Leopard that is maxed out with 4GB of RAM. I run XP under VMWare full-time. Most of the time, things are fine. However, at times my computer will just seem to "slow down", even when not much is running. I think I tracked down the problem to Google desktop, which I have uninstalled, and I haven't seen general slow-downs since then.
Then yesterday, all screen redraws suddenly became jittery. Dragging the mouse, pulling the dock up, even typing in Mail.app. I quit all programs, including VMWare and put the computer to sleep. This morning, the problem persisted, so I rebooted. Upon reboot, the system seems normal again. I would expect oddities like this on a Windows box, but not the Mac. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
btw, I run Time Machine most of the time, so I don't think the problem is related to that (if so, I would have seen the issue sooner).
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

This link explains what you see on the Startup Manager screen,
    http://etutorials.org/MacOS/mac+os+x+power+tools/Part+I+Setup+Startup+and+InStalling/Chapter+3+Subjugatin g+Startup+and+Leveraging+Login/Choosing+a+Startup+Volume+orSystem/
On your Startup Manager screen, your only choice is your OS X volume, and not OS 9 if it is installed alongside OS X. For you to boot into OS 9, open your System Preference window & select Startup Disk. When the Startup Disk window appears, Os 9 & OS X should appear. Select OS 9 & you'll boot into OS 9 on a restart. After booting into OS 9, you can get back to booting into OS X by depressing the X key (or Command+X keys) at startup.

  • 8350i: Changing the font size results in screen redraw problems

    Hey everyone.
    BlackBerry 8350i
    v4.6.1.204 (3.0.0.73)
    BBAlpha Sans, size 8
When the screen redraws to account for a change in font or font size, there is a redraw problem that overwrites portions of the menu.  Steps to repro and some supporting dialogue from a 3rd party software developer are below.
Steps needed to observe the problem:
Go to Options -> Screen / Keyboard.
    Select Font size.
Roll up and down between the different available font sizes.
Observe that sections of the font size menu disappear and reappear as the "Quick brown fox" example text is redrawn.
I have always thought that menus should receive visual preference, meaning that anything redrawn in the background should not overwrite them.  The 8350i does not seem to honor this convention, however.  Instead, the sample text renders in front of portions of the font size menu list, making those portions of the menu disappear.
Case in point: AstraSync 3.0, just out of beta, uses some nice stylization for its main email presentation screen.  However, when you click the menu button, the menus are slowly devoured by the background text and eventually become invisible.  I reported this issue to AstraSync tech support and they have stated that this appears to be a bug in the 8350i, not their software:
James and others, Unfortunately the problems with the menu disappearing
appear to be a device issue and as such is not something that we are
    able to fix.
-Vicky Cwilewicz, Wednesday, April 08, 2009
    http://forum.astrasync.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=649
This conversation occurred while the AstraSync software was in beta, and I have confirmed that the issue continues now that the software is out of beta.  Given the phone's own rendering issues within Screen/Keyboard, I think their claim, that this represents a bug in the phone itself, has some merit.  Any thoughts or advice on a workaround?  Assuming that this is truly a bug in the device software itself, will RIM please consider addressing it?
    Thanks,
    James

This problem is also evident in Opera Mini. A bit of googling revealed it was introduced in OS version 4.6.1.128. This is quite clearly a device bug and we would appreciate a response from RIM on the matter.
