Screen res defaults to 800x600 on external display

What I have:
I have my powerbook hooked up to an external 17" Philips monitor, via a KVM switch.
The KVM can handle resolutions far in excess on 1024x768.
What I want to do:
When I boot up the powerbook, I want the Powerbook to output to the external display at 1024x768
What is actually happening:
Instead, the powerbook outputs to 800x600. Oddly, the display on the powerbook also shows as 800x600.
If I click 'detect displays' in the sys prefs screen, the powerbook all of a sudden outputs to 1024x768 just as I like it. The screen on the powerbook also updates to 1024x768, too.
Any ideas on what might be causing this glitch?
Incidently, I tried bypassing the KVM and conecting the display to the powerbook directly, and the issue seems to persist.
I don't mind opening up sys prefs on each boot up, but it would be nice if it would default to 1024x768 automatically on each boot up, without my intervention.
Many thanks!!!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately this suggests that there is something more serious wrong with the graphics part of the logic-board.

I would like to darken my Mac Air screen, so I can use may external display and the keyboard on the notebook--it is possible on a PC-does it work on a Mac?

    Sure it's possible.
Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo on the top left of the menu).
Choose "Display".  There's a slider bar for the screen brightness.  Adjust it and you're all set.

Take it to Apple and ask them to fix the physical damage the water caused.

  • Resolution won't go above 800x600 on external display

    Hey all,
I broke my iBook's screen (nasty drop), but everything else works fine. I finally got my VGA adapter from home and hooked it up to my Acer AL1916 LCD, only to find that the resolution refuses to go above 800x600!
When I open Displays in System Preferences, I get two windows. The System Prefs window is labeled Acer AL1916 and only has options for 640x480 or 800x600. Another window spawns behind it, labeled VGA Display. This one goes well beyond what the iBook's GPU supports (up to 1600x1200). Changing this, even to a supported resolution such as 1024x768, has no effect on the external display.
How can I get the external display to accept a higher resolution? Do I need drivers of some sort (Acer seems to have Windows drivers only on their site)? Having my only computer stuck at 800x600 is pretty atrocious, so please respond ASAP if you know anything about this.

What font? Could be a pixel-based font that simply doesn't provide larger glyphs.

  • Version 7.2.0 full screen mode does not appear in external display

I just upgraded to Version 7.2.0. The new full screen mode is fabulous. But, when the video starts, it moves the QuickTime window from my giant, external monitor to my laptop monitor. Is there some way to view video in full screen mode on my external monitor?
    Cheers,
    Greg
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Here's a solution I thought should work for QuickTime(not pro):
When you plug in an external monitor and choose to extend your desktop there is an extra tab in the "Display Settings" window for "arrangement". So, obviously on this page you can arrange your screens and decide which side you want your external monitor to extend your desktop on. Also, you can hold and drag the menu bar giving you the option of putting the menu bar on your external screen. So, one would think that the display that has the menu bar on it should be used as your default display. So, you would also think that QuickTime Player, when put into full screen mode, would use your "default" display to go into full screen. This seems logical, and possibly even desired behavior from a computer.
However, this is not the case. When I gave this a try no matter where you put your menu bar the QuickTime Player will always open its full screen mode in your MacBook Pro's display. What I propose is some how (though I'm unsure of how to do this) contact apple with a feature request that would allow you to explicitly set a default display and to have all applications use that display for when it goes into full screen.

  • White screen after waking from sleep when external display is attache

Waking from sleep mode to lock screen when a secondary monitor is connected with an HDMI cable presents a blank white screen with user icon but no other elements, including the box where one enters their password.  The remaining UI elements appear only after disconnecting the HDMI cable.

  • External Display is incorrectly recognized as a TV.

Hi there. My MBA 2011 (Lion) is connected to ASUS VG236H with a MiniDP-HDMI cable. However I don't see the native resolution (1920*1080) or refresh rate (120Hz) available in the display setting. Instead I have to use 1080p and 60Hz which make the everything looks blurry on the screen. In System Information the external display is recognized as a TV whereas in fact it isn't.
Is there a way to solve this problem? Thank you all guys.

It seems to be growing every time I plug in my external monitor.  Now I have 4 desktops.
I am also using FCPX with this set up.  Maybe this is causing the problem?

  • Portege R700 with docking can't switch automatically to external display

    Hi!
In the past we bought a lot of A600, S10, R500, and we bought always a docking for each laptop here in Desjardins.
Now we have a little problem with the new R700 Model: PT318C-00G001,
    We bought 30 of them.
WHY when we put it on the docking (with the screen close) it can't display/switch automaticaly to the external display? (here a 22inc LCD)
It is plug with the HDMI/DVI cable. And when we get the display on by ajusting in the intel graphic and media control panel (V 6.14.10.5258), after a reboot out of the docking the screen is all buzzy.... sometime the two screen are dark, and we must use some key combinaison to switch.
It is really not user friendly for our user.....
With the older model like the A600 or S10, all have always worked well, if we are on the dock, the screen pop right on the LCD external display, if I shut it down, ondock it and boot it up all is alright on the laptop's screen.
we are on Windows XP Pro SP3.
I tried the Toshiba display device change utility and the Toshiba Mobile extension. wich are not more clear...
    Thanks for your help.

Did you install a Vanilla version of Windows? Or was XP installed from the Toshiba Recovery Disc?
Maybe you are missing some important drivers (common modules for example). Also ensure you are using the Display Drivers from the Toshiba Website.
Also try a BIOS Update (v1.70 is the latest I think).

  • Display issues when disconnecting from an external display

While I have found 3 bugs since my upgrade to 10.6 the biggest and most frequent issue is the MBP display when using and external monitor. When I connect a monitor all is well (mirroring mode). When I disconnect the MBP screen gets the major jitters and I can't stop it by doing anything in the Display Properties. The only way to resolve it to close the lid forcing the system into suspend mode. When I reopen all is well again. This is not an intermittent issue. Has anyone found this issue and is there a better work around?
The only other issues have been Mail crashing the whole system and Gotomeeting crashing the whole system when attempting to take Keynote into full screen mode.

I am have experienced both problems as well as if I have an external display connected to my MBP and move itunes video play back to the second screen then disconnect it from the MBP the video stays on the second display and will not gather back to the MBP display. The video is playing but off screen. Gather and detect screen do not work to get the video play back to the MBP screen.
When I reconnect the external display there is the video. I know this does not answer the original question, but from looking around the net it seems to be a growing issue.

  • Airplay external display with Keynote

The iOS Keynote help states that to show a presentation on a separate screen, one can connect to an external display, a projector, or Apple TV with AirPlay. The presentation should play on the connected screen, and your device shows the presenter display, which you can set to display presenter notes.
I have no difficulty showing the presentation itself on an HDMI TV using apple TV and AirPlay, with mirroring turned on. But turning mirroring off, as suggested by Keynote help, shows nothing.
Have others tried this? Had success? Or not? Thank you for any help!
    Henry

Thank you for your response, Nlangston. However, mirroring does not permit me to see the presenter display, on which I would be able to see my notes. Without my notes, I'd be back to the old days of using powerpoint where all you got to see on both your laptop and on the projector were your slides. The reason I went to Keynote in the first place, on my mac many years ago, is so I would be able to see my notes on my laptop while my audience saw the slides.

  • Stop sending signal to external display without unplugging the cable

Stupid question: if I toggle through the display settings (F7), it doesn't seem as if any go to shutting off the external display (like maybe I want to make a change I don't want my audience to see, I would like to shut it off without unplugging, then turn it back on when I'm done). Did I just not toggle through enough? Or is there a different mechanism to accomplish this?
(I also looked in System Preferences --> Display, but see no command for shutting off the external display once it is connected/detected.)
    Thanks!

Hi, Phlaug. There is no such setting. But if you use Extended Desktop mode instead of Display Mirroring mode, nothing that appears on your MBP's screen needs to appear on the external display (or projector) that your audience is seeing.
Instructions from Mac Help, under the Help menu:
*Setting up multiple displays as an extended desktop*
If your computer is connected to more than one display or to a TV or projector, you can set them up as a continuous display for your desktop.
To set up multiple displays as an extended desktop:
Connect the displays to your computer.
Connecting multiple displays or a projector
Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement.
Open the Display arrangement pane of Displays preferences
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
You can also show the same image on all the displays connected to your computer. This is called “video mirroring.”
Setting up multiple displays to show the same image
If your computer is connected to more than two displays, you can specify that some are mirrored displays and others show the extended desktop. For example, if you have three displays, you can have two displays showing the same information and the third display showing the extended desktop. To set up a combination of displays showing mirrored and extended desktop images, set up the three displays as an extended desktop, and then Option-drag a display icon onto another display icon to mirror the two displays.
If you are playing a DVD on a television connected to your computer, click the Arrangement button in Displays preferences and move the menu bar to the television. If you don’t see an Arrangement button, your computer is only capable of mirroring (showing the same image on all screens). For more information, see the manual that came with your computer.

  • Phantom external Display

I've started to notice a strange symptom on my MBP 15" 2.0GHz CoreDuo.
I regular switch back and forth from home and office and when I'm in the office I have the MacBook Pro connected to an external Dell 22" display. When at home or traveling it's just the laptop with it's internal LCD.
Lately, whenever I reboot the laptop as a standalone (no external display connected) it starts up thinking that it has an 800x600 resolution external display connected. It always positions that display to the top left of the built-in laptop display. I first discovered it when I was moving up to the Apple menu and the mouse cursor would disappear. When I opened up the Monitor Control Panel, I see the option to Gather Windows as well as the Arrangement Tab. If I click on Arrangement it shows two displays connected with the orientation. I can also see the Detect Displays button which if I click on it a few times it eventually sees that there is not an external display and moves it back to the normal mode.
I even checked the System Profiler in this state, and it also thinks that there is an external display connected until I go through the sequence to clear the reference to the external display.
I recently sent the MBP back for a fan repair where they replaced the motherboard as well (unknown reason). Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm wondering if there is something obvious I'm missing before I call AppleCare on it.

Can someone tell me how I can close the lit and not go to sleep when an external display (plasma TV) is attached? I cannot get this working. Thx.

  • Can I use the Retina Display as an external display?

Hi. I know it's not a huge issue- the graphics are amazing on the retina macbook pro.
But I was wondering if I could use the screen on the laptop as an external display, say, for a desktop computer that would have a huge, power thirsty, heat sink, graphics exploading graphics card?
Would this be possible through thunderbolt at all?
    Thanks!

Well, I don't know if this could provide input at the full native resolution of the macbook pro- but it does seem like it might do the trick. It's the "eye tv" that allows you to input a video stream into your mac.

  • Mavericks menubar is missing on external displays

From the original install the OS worked great, I loved it then following this (10.9.1) update to Mavericks the multi-display functionality is missing. I'm working on a late 2011 MBP with maximum RAM and disc space.
The menu bar now only displays on the main screen and is missing from the external display. Mavericks was working fine after I updated and I saw this issue in mid December. As of yet I have not been able to solve it. I have not attempted to reinstall Mavericks. The OS behaves much like it did with Lion. Is this a function of this latest Mavericks upgrade or could it be something else?
Is there a way to uninstall the update? What is at risk if I do?
    Many thanks,
    Shrinkray

What do you have in System Preferences, Mission Control, "Displays have separate Spaces"? I think you need to have that checked to get the menubar.

  • Bluescreen after plugging an external display into my MBP 2012 under Windows 7 6 bit

After installing the windows updates for windows 7 64bit on my bootcamp partition, i always get a blue screen, when I plug in my external display into my mbp 2012. Before installing those windows update, i didn't have this problem. Also, while running osx the external display works perfektly.
The error message says something about a igdkmd64.sys file beeing responsibe for the bluescreen. I've tried to install the original bootcamp drivers and the newest intel graphics driver, neither resulted in a change. Thank you for your help and pleases excuse my bad english ;-)
