Screen Resolutions in OSX 10.8

Maybe someone can help, but if not - Apple, please sort this out, I've read complaints all over the net going back years...
Screen Resolutions. This isn't difficult Apple. The video card in my 2008 Mac Pro (a geforce somethignorother) can display all manner of resolutions - pretty much anything under 25**x1*** (whatever that res is) is supported. I know this because nvidia state as much on their website, and also because every single video card since the beginning of time (which, for me and computers, was circa 1996) can do it.
So why, when I connect a 24" Acer LCD screen (with a native resolution of 1920x1200) via VGA (vga because it's what I've got running under the floor) do the video resolution options in OSX only include 4:3 and 16:9 formats? I don't want 1920x1080. It's pathetic. My 2006 mac pro running 10.5 has no such problem. This 2008 Mac pro had no such problem while running 10.6 a few years ago.
Here's another example. After giving up with the 24" Acer (being advised to BUY a bit of software to access a resolution is ridiculous), I plugged in my 32" Sony LCD screen, again via VGA. This was interesting. Sony on their website stated that 1360x768 was the highest resolution accessable via VGA, despite the TV supporting 1920x1080 via digital inputs. As soon as OSX detects the TV then surely, 1360x768 is the highest offered resolution. But, if I boot the computer without the TV being on, then switch the TV on, I can set it to 1920x1080, and all is well. Work that one out Sony. A combination of Sony trying to limit their cheap tvs, and Apple interfering.
Anyway, my basic argument and complaint is this: I hate little more than computers that think they're smarter than the user. Even if we disgard the Sony example (which is doubtless a line of code written in the TV, rather than a technical limitation (as I own the 37" version of the TV, and it works at 1080p via VGA no probs - doubt they've engineered two different VGA circuits...)) - there is no excuse for OSX wrongly detecting a screen and displaying incorrect resolutions. Have an idiot mode by all means, but let me adjust the resolution beyond that. Give me access to all resolutions at all times.

Apple doesn't routinely monitor these discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Switcher ?Can you change the size of the screen resolution on the Macbook?

I'm really interested in buying a Macbook. This will be my first Mac. I love the way they look and feel. I'm concerned with the size of everything on the Macbook. The overall size of the fonts in applications such as word, or safari was too small for me.
Can you change the size of the screen resolution in OSX like you can on Windows? In Windows doing this makes everything visually bigger.
Please say you can. I'm really wanting the Macbook as it would be great for for a student like me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Hopefully a Macbook 13" 2.0 Superdrive soon.
Hopefully a Macbook 13" 2.0 Superdrive White soon.

With an LCD, if you change the resolution, things will be bigger, but blurrier.
You can however keep the resolution of the LCD at its native resolution, giving the maximum picture quality, and then use tools, such as Tinkertool…

  • Screen resolution in Windows XP

    Hi all,
I have a iMac 24", with a screen resolution of 1920x1200. I installed Windows XP with Bootcamp. The problem I have now is in Windows, the highest possible choice for screen resolution is 1600x1200 which doesn't look good at all.
How do I change that into 1920x1200?
I am a complete newbie when it comes to windows so help is appreciated. (I only installed it to run SolidWorks during work).
    Thanks,
    Veronica

    Hi Veronica,
just to rule ou the obvious:
Have you installed the BootCamp Windows Drivers from the OSX DVD yet ?
If not, while in Windows pop in the OSX DVD and the Driver Installation should start automatically.

JIm, you can make the text larger....look at the Interface Tab on the Preferences menu and you'll see several different Font size options (although there are less on OSX apparently). Make a selection, then close and restart Lightroom for the change to take effect.

  • Screen resolution at boot time and in single user mode?

    Hello!
I remember back in 10.3.8 or earlier my Mac booted right away in 1280 by 1024 pixels screen resolution, thus avoiding the video mode change when showing the progress bar.
I didn't manage to get it back to work this way.
Reset NVRAM ( a zillion times!) didn't help, nor did setting the screen mode from the admin or root account.
I'd really like to have it back!
It's no fun working in single user mode on 640 by 480.
I know this has been working with the original ATI Rage 128 and with the Radeon 7000 PCI I built in 3 years ago.
    Any ideas?

    Powermac G3 b/w Rev. B   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   RAM: 896 MB

Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

  • Lost screen resolution option

Actually, this isn't a question about an Apple monitor, but it's the kind of thing contributors here seem to know about. Hope that's OK.
I've been happily using my G4 (1.25 Dual) with a Belinea 17" CRT (30 10 20) for some years, with successive versions of OSX. Just recently I opened 'Displays' in System Preferences and closed it, without altering anything, and the screen resolution immediately changed.
Now I can't change it back - evidently the original resolution is no longer shown in the drop down list. If anyone knows ANYTHING I can do to get it back again, I'd be eternally grateful, as this has ruined my Mac-using experience.
    Thanks,
    Andy

Thanks to everyone who replied, I sorted it out in the end!

  • Screen Resolution change

Is there any OSX key combo I can use to change the screen resolution?
I changed the resolution up to try it - my monitor couldn't handle it. Waited for it to ask me to confirm, and then flip back, but it didn't. Restarted my computer, but it still seems to be kicking out the signal at the too-high resolution, which won't display.
I can't see the screen sufficiently clearly to navigate into System Preferences. Can anyone assist?

Hmm, that should have worked since that's the file which holds both your screen resolution and profile information. You may have accidentally chosen a refresh rate that your monitor can't handle.
Start up once again in Safe Mode. Go into the System Preferences and click the Displays icon. Click the "Detect Displays" button. Select any resolution you know will work. Make sure it's not the same as the current choice to force OS X to write the information back to disk.
Close the System Preferences and restart normally.

  • Increasing screen resolution beyond 1440 x 900

Hello, is there a way to increase the screen resolution beyond 1440 x 900? The result I'm hoping for is one I can accomplish in Windows in that it creates a sort of virtual screen that becomes viewable when one moves the mouse pointer to that which is off-screen, thus bringing it on screen.
The entire desktop would shift to display only that 1440 x 900 of the, say, 1920 x 1200. I don't know what this is technically termed and I hope I've explained it well enough. Thanks!

Check out VirtueDesktops - OSX 10.5 Leopard has 'Spaces' built-in which is very similar

  • Does Screen Resolution Cause Display Problems?

I just picked up my new 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro with 750m and I changed the screen resolution to the second option, the one with the bigger text but i am noticing that when i close a window, a white horizontal line comes up around where the window was. Is this a screen problem or software related problems? Thank you.

I agree with Mende1. It sounds like it might be ghosting.
I have a competely different tip for you: a better way of increasing the size of the text is to use screen zoom. Check here for more info: https://www.apple.com/accessibility/osx/#vision

  • Changed screen resolution in error

I accidentally changed the screen display for the mac mini and it went black and now says "please change display resolution." How can I change the resolution without seeing the display?

    Hi
I have the same problem as Henryhbmains and I have tried exactly what you describe without positive result.
One thing I do not understand is that Apple OSX does not have a "safety switch" like in other operating systems where you have to confirm within 15 seconds or the screen resolution will automatically switch back.
I have now wasted a lot of time and what I hoped to be my first time happily with a Mac turned out to be my first time with a Mac wasting a lot of time and getting so disappointed.
Would you have any other suggestions - that would be very helpful
    Thank you

  • DB does not look the same in different screen resolutions

    Hi All -
I have built my dashboards using the Windows screen resolution 1024 x 768, and exported the dashboard into powerpoint.  With this resolution the dashboard looks normal.  I then changed my Windows screen resolution to 1280 x 1024, opened the ppt slideshow and my X-axis labels are being cut off.  The labels are written vertically (ex: 06/09/09).
Does anyone know why this could be happening?
    Thanks!
    Tracy

I am experiencing the exact same thing. The width of the tabs in the layout editor is varied depending on the length of the text. However, at run-time, the width of the tabs is fixed, causing the tabs to be wider than the window and a set of VCR buttons to appear in the upper right corner of the canvas. Personally, I think this is a Forms bug. Why would they intentionally let us set the width to variable at design-time only to force a fixed width at run-time?

  • Unable to Change Screen Resolution in Remote Session - Windows Server 2012 R2

Does anybody know of a way to allow Remote Desktop users to adjust their own screen resolution in a remote session under Windows Server 2012 R2? We are struggling with this and can't seem to find a solution.
When users login to their RDP session and try to adjust their screen resolution this message is displayed in Control Panel:
"The display settings can't be changed from a remote session."
We don't want to use the "make text and other items larger or smaller" scaling feature, as this produces undesirable results with some of our applications.  We also don't want to have to support multiple types of RDP clients or RDP shortcut
    files.
We have looked at other posts but can't find an answer that applies to Windows Server 2012 R2.  The closest thing we could find is KB2726399, but it only applies to Server 2008.
Does anybody have a solution for Server 2012?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Currently you cannot change the resolution from within the session.  This is normal and expected behavior.
Unfortunately this means you need to set the desired resolution before connecting by using custom .rdp files, manually within the Remote Desktop Client, custom web launch page, custom windows launch program, etc.

  • Using Mini DisplayPort to VGA, screen resolution distorts.  How do I fix?

When I use my Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, the resolution gets too big for my screen (mbpro 15") and the same thing appears on the projector I use. I'm not sure if I should change my screen resolution while I use the projector or what?
Also, the first (and only) time I used it, it seemed as if the signal wouldn't even send. After a while of fiddling around, the screen finally showed up on the projector (distorted) but we didn't do anything different to change that. It just kind of did it on it's own. Is this common for "first uses" or will this happen every time?
I plan on using this again Friday.

Welcome! If you have mini displayport, you should try the appropriate discussion group for your newer machine:

Although some things are very similar to the original Macbook Pro, many are not.

  • How to turn off "screen resolution" warning in iPhoto?

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a Mac mini (Late 2012), 2.3 GHz, 4 GB memory, iPhoto version 9.5.1 (902.17). I get the "screen resolution not optimal for iPhoto" warning repetitively about once every 15 minutes as long as iPhoto is running. I have set the resolution to my preference and I don't mind seeing this warning once when I start iPhoto, but it gets annoying. How can I set iPhoto to stop doing this?

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on a Mac mini (Late 2012), 2.3 GHz, 4 GB memory, iPhoto version 9.5.1 (902.17). I get the "screen resolution not optimal for iPhoto" warning repetitively about once every 15 minutes as long as iPhoto is running.
Is there a reason, why you do not update to the Yosemite compatible version iPhoto 9.6? I never get the warning, you are reporting, if the iPhoto window can fit the screen, with MacOS X 10.10.2 and iPhoto 9.6.1.
