Screen save time

Up to now my screen has gone off (saved) after 20 seconds.
It now remains on constantly.
I would like to revert to the 20 second turn off.
How do i do this?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks and Happy New Year
David

  • QuickTime makes display sleep, according to screen saver time

    QuickTime 7.1, OS 10.4.6, PowerBook G4
My display sleep time is set for never, and my screen saver is set for 5 minutes. When I play a QuickTime movie, if I don't move the pointer once in a while, the display sleeps at 5 minutes. I could see QuickTime movies not informing the computer that something is going on, but in this case the screen saver should activate. Instead, the display simply sleeps.
    Any idea what's going on?

    Does not matter any more.

  • Screen saver can't be disabled; starts when it feels like it

I have a weird problem with my screen saver. I had to shut down my Mac mini (G4, 1.42GHz) manually via the power button a few days ago, and ever since then, the system refuses to obey the "Start screen saver:" time delay preference in System Preferences. I'd always had it set to "Never", but now it always starts after the standard time interval. I've since discovered that even if I set it to 3 minutes, it still waits a half hour or so to start (I'm assuming it's the default delay).
I've checked for corrupt preferences in my home and main Library directories files using plutil, but they're all good; I booted with the restore disc to repair any startup disk HDD errors in Disk Utility (there were some errors, in what files and of what vintage I know not, but I was able to fully repair the disk and now no problems are reported); I've even trashed and re-set my screen saver .plist file (~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.SOMEHASH.plist) a few times. From the looks of things, the Screen Saver preferences pane is recording the correct idle time and screen saver in the .plist file, it's just not honoring the idle time. It does, however, allow me to change the screen saver itself. I don't have any screen savers installed that didn't come with the system -- I've been alternating between the iTunes and RSS ones since I can't choose 'None'.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I can't emphasize enough how much I hate screen savers (no offense to the programmers, they're just not my thing!). It's especially frustrating that I have to leave the computer sit for a half hour just to test any possible solution...

So after some time it stopped doing it. Then it started again. I still don't know what the issue is, but I do know what causes it.
When I plug in an external monitor to the DVI port, the sreensaver disregards any mouse movements on the the extended display, and goes into screensaver mode. If I disconnect the monitor the computer continues to act as it does when the monitor is plugged in. What I've done to remedy this is use the laptop in clamshell mode, disable the screensaver, then disconnect the monitor.
This seems to remedy the problem. Hope this helps anybody else with similar issues.
PS External is Samsung 930b 19" (for what its worth)
    Thanks for your help.

  • Screen Saver and IPTV

How can I prevent the Screen Saver coming on while watching IPTV programs?

  • Screen saver on 6220

When i use Nokia Maps, its function is often abrupted by screen saver.  Can I turn screen saver off or at least enlarge time that has to pass before screen saver is turned on?

You have two posts in a very short space of time and after reading both, I don't think you even bothered going through your phone to check if these settings can be changed.
I'll answer both of them right here yes both can be changed, The speed dial can be reassigned or disabled > Go to your call settings
the screen saver time out can also be changed. I don't know wether your phone is s40 or s60
so check your display settings and your theme settings depending on what your phone is

  • WGM: Enforcing screen saver policy

We are using a 10.5.4 server with all 10.5.4 clients.
The server is running OD only in the "Golden" or "Magic Triangle" configuration. Basically, this server is our point of managed preferences for our macs while we use Group Policy for all our PCs. Authentication is done through AD.
I have had success adding various policies to test machines, but one continues to evade me. I can force the computer to lock on screensaver, but I am having difficulty setting a permanent timeout or "Idle Time" for the screen saver. I have tried adding the "Idle Time" preference to the manifest in both "Often" (a supported area) and "Always" (one that throws a warning), but neither seem to effect the computers actually screen saver time. Note: If "Always" is set, that time will show in the /Library/Managed Preferences/<USER>/...plist file, but the actual policy doesn't appear to be enforced.
Here are the sources I've used for setting up screen saver policies:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7251806&#7251806
    http://managingosx.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/mcx-vs-the-screensaver-and-leopard/
Is there even a way to enforce either 1) an exact time for the screen saver to be invoked or at least 2) a maximum wait time allowed for it to be set to?
    Thanks all!

What vintage machines are you using for this? I'll guess they're not the most recent?
I've found that I can get the ByHost prefs to work from WGM for (slightly) older machines that use the shorter Unique ID (just the MAC address). 2 x 2.66 Dual Core Xeon Mac Pro is an example. However, newer machines such as a 2 x 3.2 Quad Core Xeon Mac Pro use a longer Unique ID. There are two problems:
    1) WGM doesn't see a ByHost .plist file with a long Unique ID as being valid
    2) WGM delivers a ByHost .plist file with a short Unique ID (MAC address) to a newer machine that wants to see a long Unique ID ByHost .plist file. So, the newer machine simply ignores it. You'll see two com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist in the ByHost folder.
I guess that's perhaps the bug referred to in one of the posts above.
We haven't had a chance to see if Server 10.5.6 addresses this or not. We're currently on 10.5.5.
For a given machine, you can see what its Unique ID (or, Universal Unique ID; UUID) either by changing screensaver prefs and then looking in your ByHost folder for the most recent version of the .plist file, or by doing this little command here: http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=leopardbyhostchanges
The above article makes it sound like all Leopard machines use the long UUID, but I haven't found that to be the case. It seems to just be newer hardware that does.

    Hi boadiceaa,
Is the machine in a domain environment ?How did you configure the screensaver ?
Usually we can configure it here .
Right click the blank desktop ,choose personalize ,screensaver.
There is a registry key we can configure the timeout of the screensaver .
     HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeout
If it is a domain environment ,please check whether the screensaver group policy has been configured.
We can run "rsop " to have a check .
We also can try to configure it from the group policy
    Screen Saver timeout
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961876.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
If the issue persists, we can try to login with another account and configure it to have a check .This will help us to narrow down whether this issue is caused by the specific account .
    Best regards
im not exactly sure what you mean by domain but its for my home network, just simple SOHO. ive tried using another user account to change it but it doesnt matter what it only goes to 15 mins max time.
youd suggest i look into the registry for starters or?
    thanks again for the reply

  • ATV Screen Saver, One Photo at a Time ..PLs

My ATV's screen saver shows my photos in a tiled, many photos at a time format. I would like to show one full screen photo at a time.
Just spent many minutes trying to do this and failed
I know this can be done, but do not know how.
    Help please.

Yep, maybe they should rename the photo function cascade or something, I understand your confusion, I'll post a suggestion on your behalf. You can do the same yourself if you wish.

  • Screen saver unlock/lock times....

I'm looking for a way to track when folks unlock/lock their screen savers. Is there a program or log file that can assist me here? I need to be able to do this so I can track when users are unlocking/locking their machines. Most users don't logout of their machine, so the screen saver is my best option I think. They are running 10.9.2.
Suggestions are welcome for tracking times other than this route as well.
    Thanks in advance,

My grandmother is 85 years old.  The Ipad we bought her is primarily used for receiving emails with pictures from us, which are then displayed in the slide show of the screen saver.
Last night my genious brother decided for some reason to upgrade her Ipad to IOS7.  I have no idea why he did that,  but he rendered the Ipad useless for her use.
In the time since the last message was posted on this thread, has anyone found any workaround,  app or anything that can be of help.  Did anyone downgrade to IOS6 successfully?
Please note anything other than the an automatic slideshow including new pictures would not be useful.
I am at a loss and desparately need a solution for this one.

  • Custom screen saver idle time

Is there a way to set a custom screen saver idle time? Through terminal? I tried "defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 160" for 3 minutes but that makes it go to 20 when I view it in preferences... lol, wow. This is hilarious. It's too much to have a slider or let the user enter any number? Too much for Apple, I know. It's tough. 100 billion dollar company. Can't even adjust the mouse acceleration either. Apple is Christ reincarnate.

    i got it to work
I was runing it as root and you have to run it as Current console user on target computer in order for it to work.
just in case someone else ever needs it.

Time Machine works for me about 90% of the time, until I leave the computer alone for over a hour it seems and gets into the late screen saver stage or goes to sleep. After it does this Time Machine will not work, yet the hard drive is still fully fuctional. Please Advise.

  • Time Machine crashes whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.

Apologies if there is an obvious answer or post about this.  Every time I try to initialize Time Machine, it will begin backing up until the computer goes to sleep or the screen saver kicks in.  When I wake the computer up, I get a message that says "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."  The message also tells me that the problem might be temporary and to try Disk Utility to repair the backup disk if the problem persists.
When I run Disk Utility, I am told that the volume cannot be repaired and that it needs to be reformatted.  I reformat the disk, try to run Time Machine again, and get the same problem whenever the computer goes to sleep or into screen saver mode.  Lather, rinse, repeat.
I managed to get an initial backup only if I turned off the screen saver and the sleep function.  However, once I turned them back on, I ran into the same problem when Time Machine tried to update the backup.
I am running OS X v.10.6.8 on an iMac5,1.  The backup is a Toshiba 1TB USB external HD. I saw this same problem posted in the Lion forum (and I cribbed the title of this post from there).  Nobody has offered a solution yet, but it was a very recent post.
    Thanks in advance.

Oh yeah I forgot to say I use an ETHERNET connection.

How can I set screen saver clock which show time and date when all screen is black. Other phones have this option but I didn't find on iphone. Pl guide.

HA!  I figured the find my iphone out!!!!! You can have more than one icloud account in "Mail, Contacts and Calendars".  So my husband's & kids' phone icloud account under "settings, icloud "is their individual @me.com account.  Set it to everything you want EXCEPT Find My Iphone.  Then under "settings, mail/contacts/calendars" you set up both accounts (your @me.com which may already be there), then add another with the main appleID and enable ONLY Find My Iphone.  Now when any of us log into Find My Iphone from any device with our main apple ID for the app store, all the devices show up!!!! YIPPEE.  I made my own day!
I think the message I got previously was because I hadn't disabled the find my iphone on the @me.com account first.

  • System Preferences- Desktop/Screen saver- crash EVERY TIME

    Hi-
I have a brand new iMAc 24" with Leopard and all software is up to date via update as of 12 hours ago (10.5.1 etc). I have office 2004 and photoshop/illustrator but NO other software loaded. The computer is now 7 days old. Yesterday I used system preferences to change my desktop picture to something from my iPhoto library, as per normal with 10.5.1 I got one picture up and then went to change it and now EVERY TIME I try to change anything in the desktop/screen saver system preferences the application dies. I can get the desktop/screen saver page to open but as soon as I click any conceivable option on that window the system preferences application dies. I have sent about 7 crash reports to apple and see that others are describing similar (not identical) problems. Is apple going to fix this? I DID not install leopard on this computer, its BRAND NEW. The only thing I have done is to update whatever apple told me was available. HELP...

My computer was a month old when I installed Leopard (which turned out to be an adventure....), and once I finally got a proper install one of the features I explored was Desktop and Screensaver, specifically I tried the new mosaic option in the Screensaver for pictures, it seemed to work. The 10.5.1 update came out, a bit later I tried that Screensaver option again and not only did it not work, but it crashed System Prefs. I ended up trashing every plist and cache file having to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and iphotomosaic in my home ~/Library folder. Oh, and in searching for them they managed to crash the Finder too. So take a look thru ~/Library, especially Preferences, be sure to also look in the ByHost folder, and you might also check the Caches folder. Remove all files you can find that have to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and Desktop. Once I did that all was fine again with my System Prefs. The mosaic option even started working again.
