Screen saver files inaccessible

Ok. I've had this iMac for two weeks. Everything was working perfectly out of the box. I love Apple! Anyway. At some point in the last couple of days, my screen savers got nerfed. Not sure how. I initially had it set to "Word of the Day," and when it activated today, the only thing my screen saver displayed was the word "Quartz."
These are my screen saver options, now. All the original files are still in their folder under System:Library:Screen savers. My computer just doesn't seem to be able to access them anymore. Any ideas on how to fix this or what exactly is going on? I've tried adding the files with the "+" button, but since they aren't picture files, it's a no-go.
I have tried opening them directly through that Library folder. Depending on the file type, trying to open the files either: 1- opens the screen saver control panel under System Preferences, but the file itself does not open; or 2- opens Quicktime Player but again the file itself does not open.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Used to work, as in the past I added a batch of my own stuff to the Cosmos saver. As I recall I also edited some file that was there to list my additions (that might have been in Panther), Didn't see such a file in the Leopard Cosmos saver, so what I did was just rename my own astro photos to the same thing that was already there, then dragged my files into the Resources folder replacing what was there with mine. I just added some more, bringing my total up to "Cosmos18" and it still works fine. You'll probably want to repair permissions from Disk Utility afterwards.

  • Adding Photos to Mac Screen saver files

    Hi,
I'd like to add some additional photos to the "Cosmos" screen saver file that came with my MacBook Pro but I can't find this file through Finder in order to add my photos.
Has anyone any idea if it's possible, and if so, how ?
    Thanks.

  • HELP WITH SCREEN-SAVER FILE CONVERSION

    Hello;
I have a family member (sister) who does web design and animation on her mac, but she has had a hard time finding a program or utility that would allow her to convert a mac screen saver to a windows screen saver.
She is familiar with the "iScreensaver" program, but that is very expensive, and she was hoping there might be a more basic mac utility to get the job done.
Does anyone here know of a reasonably priced mac program or utility that would allow conversion of a screen saver from mac to windows format? Your help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Damon
    Ps.
She is on an eMac 800 chip machine, running Tiger.

    Thanks;
Think my sis was looking for a program that would not expire. But thanks.

    Hi,
    I agree with SenneVL.
After you have created the .scr file that you want to apply, you may deploy the screensaver via the following group policy.
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Personalization\Force specific screen saver
If you enable this setting, type the name of the file that contains the screen saver, including the .scr file name extension. If the screen saver file is not in the %Systemroot%\System32
directory, type the fully qualified path to the file.
Note: This setting can be superseded by the "Enable Screen Saver" setting.  If the "Enable Screen Saver" setting is disabled, this setting is ignored,
and screen savers do not run.

  • Screen Saver Freeze - Repeated

Before calling AppleCare and spending hours ...
Screen saver with clock is freezing. Repeatedly. This just started a couple days ago. Done absolutely nothing new.
I've deleted the Home>Library>Preferences>By Host .plist screen saver files (3 times); reset PRAM; unplugged all power for 30 minutes; repaired permissions both from the install disc and the computer. No avail.
No third party apps except Firefox and Office 2004.
Console shows me nothing out of the ordinary (but then again - not sure exactly what I'd be looking for).
Have a funeral to leave for and will be looking remotely at Discussions for any reply from the MBP, but if anyone has any ideas/fixes, I'll jump on any and all tomorrow night when I get back to this computer.
    Thanks!

    1) Try resetting your System Preferences/Desktop&ScreenSaver/ScreenSaver and see if it freezes.
    Please explain.
    2) Check System Preferences/EnergySaver Preferences to see if you have the Display set to Sleep when you have the ScreenSaver set to start. Could be a conflict there.
Energy Saver - Put Computer to Sleep - Never; Put Display to Sleep - 3 hours - been this way for ages.

  • Desktop and Screen Saver in System Prefs hangs. Why?

I just migrated everything over perfectly from my old intel mac to my new one. when i go to "desktop and screen saver" in the system preferences and try to choose a folder of images for screen saver, sys prefs hangs and i have to force quit. i am trying to choose the same folder i used in my old mac but i have the same problem when trying to chose any folder. is there some "desktop and screen saver" file that could be corrupted that I need to delete? if not, why is it hanging?

I too am having the same problem as the original poster. I tried what was suggested as far as creating a new admin. account and still have the same problem with no iPhoto library showing up and the desktop/screensaver preferences hanging up and finally forcing a quit to close it.
I migrated everything from my old computer to this new one including the system software. It was suggested by someone else to reinstall the system software which I have done also with no change in the problem. (something to do with shared libraries I think????)
    Any more ideas?

  • Installing screensavers that aren't .saver file

I downloaded the time machine screen saver file from apple's website, but it isn't a .saver file. can anyone help me load this as a screen saver, I went to the site and still can't find instructuions on how to load it. here is the link to the screen saver on apple's site. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/icons_screensavers/timemachinescreensaver. html

Download and install StuffIt Expander, and then try opening the .bin file again; if it still won't open, select it in the Finder, and choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Open With, choose StuffIt Expander as the default application for that file, click Change All, and confirm your action.

  • Force Specific Screen Saver - %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

I am trying to force a specific screen saver using the following in Group Policy.
    Enable screen saver - Enabled
    Force specific screen saver - %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
Password protect the screen saver - Enabled
    Screen saver timeout - 600
On some computers it works, others it does not and still others show the bubbles screen saver.  I have been unable to figure out why it's not working 100%.  It's as if the local screen saver settings are overriding the domain group policy settings.

    Hi,
    Force specific screen saver - %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
    What's the path of this?
The correct path should be: type the name of the file that contains the screen saver, including the
.scr file name extension. If the screen saver file is not in the %Systemroot%\System32 directory, type the fully qualified path to the file.
Local setting was unable to overriding the domain group policy. It might be the group policy was not applied to client. We could use gpresult command on client side to confirm:
Run "gpresult /h gpreport.html" command to saves the report in HTML format with the file name "gpreport.html" at C:\Windows\System32\ directory.
Open this file to check if this group policy was applied successfully.
Also check it on client which worked fine to compare this group policy setting.

  • MobileMe and RSS screen saver missing in Snow Leopard!

In Leopard, in Desktop & Screen Saver, under Pictures, There is a screen saver called MobileMe and RSS, which allowed you to subscribe to picture RSS feeds and would display them as a slideshow when the screen saver activated.
I found that screen saver option is no longer available in Snow Leopard. I thought I would just go to a Leopard machine and copy the screen saver file to Snow Leopard, but its not in the screen saver folder (Drive -> System -> Library -> Screen Savers).
Why did apple remove this functionality? Is there anyway to get it back?

Sorry, I get it now. My issue was similar but not the same as yours. I have never subscribed to picture-only RSS feeds so I guess I can't address your issue. As I said, I was trying to have other peoples' MM galleries show up in the list of screen savers, which I was finally able to do using my instructions (you don't need to belong to MobileMe to do this by the way, all you need is the username of a friend who does subscribe and has set up a MM gallery - for example, my username is "rbarline" in case you want to check out my "public slide show" gallery as a screen saver ... :~)
Now I am curious about picture-only RSS feeds and would like to try one as a screen saver. Can you send me a feed URL to try? Maybe there is a way after all?

  • Why does system preferences crash when changing screen saver?

There are several posts in this same vein, here, but I can't seem to find a specific one.
I had a process that ran and accidently began removing portions of my "user" directory.  I used time machine to restore and everything seems fine now.
However, I noticed that after awhile, the screen saver would come up rather than just blanking the screen.  I decided this would be ok, so I when to System Preferences-> Desktop and Screen Saver then clicked the Screen Saver tab. I chose one of the screen savers, but didn't like it. But upon re-entering the System Preferences a second time, low and behold, there were NO screen savers listed and the process hung and wouldn't close.  I finally had to stop the process from the Activity Monitor, at which point it gave a dump. This has happened about 10 times.
When I go to /System/Library/Screen\ Savers/  there is no content there. Same goes for ~/Lirbrary/Screen\ Savers/.  So it looks as if they are gone. I have a Mac Book Pro, however, that behaves the same way (except its running Snow Leopard instead of Lion). So I don't know that's it.
I have run permissions repair and checked the disk and all is well.
I have set System Preferences to not run in 32 bit, as someone suggested, but that didn't do anything either.
    I have a 2009 iMac with 4GB and about 3/4th full disk.
Could anyone suggest any more alternatives?

Thanks Linc.  I am not really comfortable with the re-install approach I guess, but it may be all I have left.  I tried to go back to a previous backup on Time Machine and just replace systempreferences.app but the backup wouldn't let me do that.  I have restored library in my home directory but I did so only piecemeal based on things that seemingly got disturbed.
One very odd thing... I left my computer on this morning and came back a little later and lo and behold a screen saver was running. This was a bit of a surprise, seeing that when I go to the system preferences and try to see screen savers, they aren't there and that's when the app hangs. So, apparently the screen savers are SOMEWHERE, but not able to be seen.  That's what is killing me. I feel as if its a permission problem, yet when I run a repair-permissions, it finds nothing wrong. The screen saver files are supposed to be somewhere, but I have a feeling they are hidden somehow, and because of that, I can't change anything. The result baffling part is that even in terminal mode, viewing /System/Library/Screen\ Savers/ or the home library folder, shows absolutely nothing in Finder OR terminal mode. So they are either completely gone or hiding. I have to assume the latter, seeing that a screen saver started up.
So if anyone has an idea how these files could be hiding, or where, other than the locations above, that would be a very good thing to know.

  • How can I use a photo from my files as a screen saver?

I have an LG monitor about 10" high and 16" wide.  How can I send a photo from my Adobe files to my desktop as a screen saver.  Because of the odd dimensions of this monitor, the one I have as a screensaver now does not show the entire photo. I need instructions how to choose one of my photos, send it to the monitor as a screen saver, and make it the correct size to show the entire photo.

You'll need to download the song from your cd to your my music folder, then open Itunes files add files or folder to the library then you find your song from your my music folder.   Then you will have to create the ringtone:

  • How do I create a screen saver from a video file?

I've been trying to search for an answer to this question for 20 minutes, without luck, so I figured the best course of action is to ask the experts.
I'm a video editor.  If I cut together a series of clips, of any length, how do I make that movie into a screen saver that will be usable on OS X Lion and Windows XP?  I would assume that it's just a matter of converting the movie file to something that an operating system recognizes and will play as a screen saver (on both platforms), but I cannot Google my way into finding the answer... I'm wanting to make a video screen saver for my wife for Christmas.  PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are a few tools you can use. This page lists a couple. It looks like you can download a trial version and see if it'll do what you want. If not there's another one on that page.
If you're handy with programming, you can also create your own with Xcode. There's an article here that talks about it, though it's a bit old, and might be somewhat out of date.
But just dropping SWF files probably isn't going to work. A screen saver is a special kind of program...

  • This might seem minor, but in Screen saver, how do you change the photos from your iPhoto that are those predetermined files on System Preferences?

I am trying to get new photos or images into the files (or whatever they are) on Screensaver that load when you screen saver becomes active. How exactly do you do that?

"If the screen saver doesn’t have an installer, drag it to /Library/Screen Savers at the top level of your internal disk. This makes the screen saver available to all users. If you want it available only to a specific user, drag it to the Library folder in that user’s home folder (the one with the user’s name)." was in the Installing and Uninstalling Screen Savers section.
A quick look around showed me that System (System/Library/Screen Savers) also holds some of the Apple images.

How can I get  my Iphotos to show as my screen saver please ?  all disappeared after upgrading ...I have done as suggested and deleted all relevant files , but now am only left with the "Squirly " screen saver option in the drop down menu and no option for Iphoto library.

Slow, intermittent.  Sometimes bootable sometime not. Odd behavior.
Sounds to me like a classic case of your HD failing.
Your SMART status may still show verified, with no errors on the Apple Hardware Test, Disk Utility shows no problems on Disk Repair-  this is of no help.
I trust you have a good back-up and a bootable clone.
