Screen Saver Freeze - Repeated

Before calling AppleCare and spending hours ...
Screen saver with clock is freezing. Repeatedly. This just started a couple days ago. Done absolutely nothing new.
I've deleted the Home>Library>Preferences>By Host .plist screen saver files (3 times); reset PRAM; unplugged all power for 30 minutes; repaired permissions both from the install disc and the computer. No avail.
No third party apps except Firefox and Office 2004.
Console shows me nothing out of the ordinary (but then again - not sure exactly what I'd be looking for).
Have a funeral to leave for and will be looking remotely at Discussions for any reply from the MBP, but if anyone has any ideas/fixes, I'll jump on any and all tomorrow night when I get back to this computer.
Thanks!

1) Try resetting your System Preferences/Desktop&ScreenSaver/ScreenSaver and see if it freezes.
Please explain.
2) Check System Preferences/EnergySaver Preferences to see if you have the Display set to Sleep when you have the ScreenSaver set to start. Could be a conflict there.
Energy Saver - Put Computer to Sleep - Never; Put Display to Sleep - 3 hours - been this way for ages.

  • Screen Saver Freezes

My screen saver routinely freezes. I have tried each and every display setting, but it will still freeze after a random number of pictures have been shown. I cannot "make" it freeze. Software V 2.3

It may be a number of photos, it may be they are all far too big, the screensaver is random, so it may be that it isn't the same one all the time, it may be one it's processing rather than one its displaying. I wouldn't like to say.
I only make a suggestion to try, I couldn't guarantee this is the problem, I do feel though that eliminating your photos is an important part of diagnosis, even if it ultimately isn't the problem.

  • Screen Saver Freeze?

My Macbook has recently taken to freezing when I try to take it out of screen saver mode. The screen saver will be on the screen and I will touch the trackpad to take it out of screen saver mode, but nothing works to get the macbook working again other than pressing the power button. Once I press the power button though, I cannot use the mouse or the keyboard, I just have to totally shut down and restart by holding down the power button.
Any ideas? Is this a known issue?
    Thanks,
    Heather

Try changing the screensaver and the duration. Also, I will include this for you to look at. You may be able to do a fix in a different way.Mac Help Index
Turning a screen saver on or off
You can choose when to start a screen saver, or you can turn it off completely. A screen saver starts after the computer is inactive for a certain amount of time. If you press a key or move the mouse, the screensaver will stop.
You can also use "hot corners" to start the screen saver immediately or deactivate it.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Desktop & Screen Saver.
Click the Screen Saver button, then adjust the slider to set the amount of time before a screensaver starts.
If you don't want a screen saver to start at all, set the slider to Never.
To set up hot corners, click the Hot Corners button.
Choose an action (Start Screen Saver or Disable Screen Saver) from the pop-up menu for a corner you want to use.
For extra security, you can require a password to turn off a screen saver. In System Preferences, click Security and select "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver."

  • Desktop screen saver freeze

I am on an iMac using Lion.  My desktop screen saver window will not shut down...the wheel just spins.  Even after a complete restart it reapprears and won't go away.  HELP!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Delete Desktop settings file. Open Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart

  • Screen saver freezing... requires hard reboot

I'm using the Shell screensaver and displaying the clock in it. I'm often finding overnight that the screensaver is frozen. It must wake the display up since the screensaver is set to go on after 15min of inactivity and then the screen should go to sleep after 30min. When I got to bed, the screen is off.
Then in the middle of the night I'll wake up and the room is illuminated by the frozen screensaver. The time displayed is usually a few hours old. The keybd and mouse do not wake the machine. So, I have to hold the power button down until it turns off and then turn it back on again.
Any ideas what's going on? This has been going on since at least 10.5.3 and I'm on 10.5.6 now.
    Thanks

Removing the plist worked... for a while. Then it started freezing again. I was using the shells screensaver and displaying the time.
I removed the plists again and then decided to go back to the flurry screensaver w/o the clock. Well, so far no freezes, however, the screensaver sometimes doesn't come up or it runs for a while and the goes back to showing the desktop. I have it set so the screensaver kicks in after 15min of inactivity and then the display should go to sleep in another 5min. Many times, the screen never goes to sleep.
In a related issue, just the other night I couldn't get the screensaver to come on by moving my mouse pointer to the hotcorner. So, I powered off the iMac. Then about 2min later, the iMac powers back on and I couldn't get it to stay off. This has also happened before... I always have to pull the plug on it.
God I hope Snow Leopard cleans up these crufty corners of OS X!

  • Mavericks Screen Saver

Since upgrading to Mavericks, my screen save freezes frequently.  I use the album cover screen saver, and it just freezes with the screen full of album covers.  No force quit, no keyboard or mouse interaction.  I have to do a hardware shutdown and restart.  This happened on occasion before the upgrade, but now it's happening about every other day.  I've restarted my Mac more times in the past few weeks than I have in the past few years.

    Jabaro,
    Any luck sovling this?
I am using an older Samsung SyncMaster LCD display and the screen-saver forces it into an unreadable, unresolvable state, short of pulling the adaptor from my iMac, or a restart.

  • Os x 10.8.3 freezes when changing screen saver

I recently installed 10.8.3. One of the glitches is that when I attempt to change the screen saver, my computer freezes. Is there a fix for this?

try this - not sure if it will work for you but it's worth a try.
open disk utility - verify your disk permissions - repair if errors are found then restart your macbook once the repairs are done.
see if that changes the way your macbook responds to changing your screen saver.

  • Computer Freezes After iPhoto Album Mosaic Screen Saver

After using the Mosaic screen saver, my Mac will freeze, therefore resulting in me having to perform a hard shutdown, and reboot my Mac. When my Mac turns back on and I log in, Crash Reporter reports that AdobeResourceSychronizer crashed. The log is found with in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ This occurs approximately once every 3-5 days. The only Adobe software I should have installed is:
    Reader
    Flash
    Shockwave
I switched my screen saver about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I switched it to Spectrum today. Should this solve the issue, or should I check for Adobe junk installed on my computer, or both?

  • Freeze during screen saver

    Gang,
I recently migrated from a G4/733 running OS 10.2.9 to a 1.9 iMac G5 running 10.3.4. This new machine sometimes freezes after the screen saver has been on for a few minutes. It's done it with the Cosmos and Nature Patterns sets. I don't think it has happened with the 2006 World Book set, but I haven't used that one for long.
I've had a handful of minor annoyances, but this one is worse because it causes me to have to shut the computer down using the power button.
    I found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=742697&#742697
The first post implied that this was a noted problem on earlier G5s, but I haven't found earlier references to it, and that thread was locked so it isn't clear to me whether it's been resolved.
Any news on this problem? I stopped using screen savers a long time ago when CRTs got to a certain refresh rate, but I think they're recommended for these LCDs--not sure. I don't want to risk screen burn-in, especially since I do leave it running for stretchs of time playing music in iTunes.
    Any advice appreciated!
    _dennis

    Hi, dennis.
I think the problem to which the archived (you noted locked) thread was referring is Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) 1.8GHz models stop responding randomly. That was specific to the Power Mac G5, not the iMac G5.
With LCDs, sleep or shutdown are preferred to screen savers for extended periods of inactivity. See "Screen Savers: Using With Liquid Crystal Displays." I'd recommend you set the Display Sleep to a short inactivity period, e.g. five minutes, in Energy Saver preferences vs. using the screen saver.
As to the specific problem you've noted, freezes and hangs often have causes similar to kernel panics: the basic troubleshooting and hardware testing steps would be the same. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
As far as general iMac G5 troubleshooting goes:
    1. The first thing I would suggest is ruling out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer.
    2. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    3. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    4. See also the new iMac G5 Support site.
    5. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    6. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. In your situation, I'd consider it a long shot, but it will determine if there are any issues with some "common troublemakers."
    7. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.
    Good luck!

  • IMac Freezes Periodically During Screen Saver Only

I own a late-2006 Intel-based iMac. Over the last few months, I've noticed that the iMac freezes when the screen saver is running. This doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't matter what screen saver I use. (None of the screen savers is a third-party.) The iMac doesn't freeze at any other time.
    Any ideas?
    - Keith
P.S. I'm running Snow Leopard right now, and it happens even with Snow Leopard, just as it did with plain ol' Leopard.

Your iMac has a dedicated Graphic's chip (GPU), while some of the Late 2006 17" iMacs had a GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM that shared with the main memory. To check which Graphic's chip you have go to: Apple > About This Mac > More Info and in the Hardware section select Graphics/Display.
If you would like to monitor the temperature of your GPU, CPU, HD and Memory check out the iStat Pro widget > http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
The main reason I suspect the lack of RAM over an overheating GPU is because you only reported a problem with the Screen Saver and not with other intense graphic's like movies, videos or games.
Please let us know how you make out with the RAM upgrade.

  • Laptop freezing when screen saver

Hi and thanks in advance for your time.
My laptop is freezing soon after the screen saver starts. In short, the sxreen saver continues but the mouse doesn't respond. I have no option but to force it to turn off using the turn on/off bottom.
I ran techtool pro and fixed permissions and rebuilt. Did not run disk warrior yet, waiting for update to arrive...
    Any ideas, any advise, thanks

If it's one of Apple's preinstalled or a 3rd party screensaver, check to see if there is a plist file inside the ~/Library/Preferences folder and trash it. Restart your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run *Repair Disk* from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751

The device has an 8GB drive for caching streamed meida, a small portion of that is used to temporarily store photos for the screensaver. It may vary depending on resolution etc but it seems to be around 100.

  • Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive.  The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop.  This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM.  I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems.  Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
    Thanks for that idea.

  • Freezing After Screen Saver

My Mac mini is becoming unresponsive and freezing pretty much whenever I return from the screen saver state. The only way I know of getting it out of this state is to turn on my external hard drive then turn it off, but i don't like to do that, CAN YOU HELP ME!!!???

The ScreenSaver Pane on my MacBook was hung on creating a Mosaic of the jpg's in the Picture folder. I removed the jpg's from the Picture Folder, restarted and the Pane was operable. I put the jpg's back in the Pictures folder and now I use a random setting and all is ok.

  • IMac freezes when changing the screen saver

    Hi all:
I originally posted this in the "Using Mac OS X" forum (iMac freezes when changing the screen saver, but thought I'd post here as well since the issue arises on a freshly installed OS.
We've got three 350MHz slot-loading G3 iMacs (with 512MB RAM) which we're planning to use for basic word processing. The install of Panther (10.3.5 from black retail cds with 10-seat volume license) went fine on the first two. Ran the updates to 10.3.9, installed MS Office 2004, everything working great (they're a little slow, but after all, they are only 350 MHz).
On the third, the first problem we noticed was the computer would lock up whenever we changed the screen saver from the default (Flurry; Computer Name also works). It continues to do so even after: repair permissions; repair disk; Disk Warrior; reset pram; reset nvram; reset pmu; change RAM; change hard drive; erase hard drive; write zeros to hard drive; reinstall with different set of retail CDs; trash preferences, and delete cache files. (If there's anything I've left out, it's in the other thread).
Now we've noticed that we can't create any new user accounts. We've thought about putting this one in production, just warning the user that they can't change the screen saver, but god only knows what will turn up next.
I'm starting to think it's a logic board issue, but could it be that selective? And would you see the same problem with another hard drive and different install discs? Am I missing something?
BTW, there's a crash log with the other thread.
    Andrew
    Dual 2.0 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm going to mark this one as answered.
I removed the hard drive from the iMac, and put it into another 350 MHz iMac, and everything works great. I can select any screen saver without having it freeze, create new accounts, whatever my little heart desires.
In checking the history of the problem iMac, there was an assortment of problems with booting (both from the hard drive and from the CD-ROM drive) which were never satisfactorily resolved. The problems just seemed to go away after sitting unplugged for a few days, as much as for anything we actually did to it.
Now we just have to decide whether it's worth fixing, or using it somewhere in a non-critical role with OS 9 installed.
    Cheers,
    Andrew
