Screen saver non functional

Suddenly my screensaver won't work. Is there a way to reinstall the screensaver system preference? Suddenly the hot corners don't work and the screensaver never comes on despite being set to come on at 3 minutes (I tried other times as well. None of them worked.
Thanks,
Peter Booth

Hi again Peter,
Was hoping that might work. How large and how many files are set to play in the slideshow? I wonder if that might not be a problem.
Perhaps trying to set a different screen saver and assign the hot corners that you want and test to see if it is just not the slide show screen saver.
You might also try selecting different slide files for the screensaver Slide Show and see if it makes any difference.
You can also try creating a "Test" user account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences and see if the problem persists in that account.
If I can think of something else to try I'll post back,

PS. I believe the .plist files that were not recreated in the By Host/Preferences might be due to the fact that you have to rerun one of those to have its preference recreated.....ie. Cosmos, Forest or Beach etc.

  • Photo Screen Saver not functioning with Yosemite Upgrade

Recently I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite. I have always used a folder in iPhoto for my screen saver via system preferences. Ever since the upgrade this folder will no longer function as the screen saver.  The screen saver option in System Preferences always defaults to Apples National Geographic photos that is installed with Yosemite. After I select the folder I want I "preview" the screen saver and my photos are there. Once the screen saver kicks itself in, the NG photos are there and the system settings are back to NG photos and not my photos. Now, I will admit the NG photos are far above my photos, but I really prefer my photos. Is Apple evaluating photo quality on the screen savers? Kidding - any ideas?

    I have the same issue.
Try this. I think this has worked for me. Only time will tell.
This solved my question by dominic23 on Oct 22, 2014 4:33 PM
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
    Look for these two files.
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Right click each  one of those and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
    Restart the computer.

  • Screen saver will only display Flury option.  After upgrading to Mavericks I had many Apple pictures in my screen savers folder.  I deleted them and found that Flury was the only screen saver that functioned.

Screen saver in Apple prefrences will only recognise Flury as an option.  Any attempted to change the screen saver selection results in a lock up of Apple screen saver prefrences.  Forced shut down will clear the lock up, but dos not solve the problem.  I updated Iphoto and repaired permissions. Neither solved the problem.

I found a fix.  In the ~library/preferences/byhost directory.  My directory had a broken link.  I deleted it.  Rebooted.  The folder came back with various files and I was able to change my screensaver!  Good luck.

  • IPad screen is non functional when in Safari

The web page loads in safari but the colour of the web page is darker than the rest of the page and it does not allow me to access anything on the screen....please help!

If Safari as a whole is frozen then :
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Screen becomes non-responsive during calls

    Hello:
I am having an occasional, but seemingly becoming more frequent, problem in which the screen becomes non-functional during calls. My immediate impression is of removing the phone from my ear to end a call and the screen not lighting up. Eventually, after I played with the buttons (which may or may not have really helped) the phone lit up. This has also happened when the phone was ringing, making it impossible to take the call.
I am using the most current firmware, but believe the problem began with an earlier version. It just seems more frequent. I cannot reproduce the problem on demand.
    Ideas? Solutions?
    David

The proximity sensor, which is what tells the phone to turn off the touch screen when the phone is against your face to prevent "cheek dialing", is located just above the ear speaker hole. Do you have a case or anything else on the phone that could possibly be blocking the sensor?

  • Is google photo screen saver incompatiblwe with the new Firefox 4? It worked fine till I downloaded the new FF 4. Any fixes?

Google screen saver quit functioning after the new FF4 was loaded. Keeps asking me to download it again (GSS). What gives? How do I fix this?

  • Screen saver completely non-functional.

I suspect this is related to the other reports of screen-saver problems.
I installed Lion 2 days ago. Things are mostly working well.
The screensaver is not working. None of the supplied modules are. I can test the screensavers from the control panel, but if I invile it with a hot corner, the screensaver briefly blips my screens (I have three monitors) and then appears to either quit or crash.
I've deleted the preferences. No help.
I've rung "sudo ./lsregister -r -apps local, system, user" in the proper directory for it - no help there either.
I'd really like to have a working screen saver. Anyone out there have any ideas?
    Thanks!

And  I figured out he solution to this about 1o minutes after I posted it.
    Nohting is actually worng.
There was conflict between my screensaver activation time (15 minutes) and my monitor power saving setting (12 minutes.). Once adjusted, the screensave started working.

  • Calendar has been non-functional for hours, with small screen saying "Moving calendars to server account..." Help?

Calendar on Mavericks MacPro has been non-functional for hours, with small screen saying "Moving calendars to server account..." How can I restore its function?

Sorry. I found some other advice that solved the problem ere I saw your response.
    The advice was:
Go to Finder. Holding "Option" key, find Library in "Go" pull down menu.   In Library. Select Calendars. To desktop, drag all files with the word "cache." Then go to Preferences (still in Library) and drag to desktop "com.apple.ical.plist".  Restart. Now Calendar is working perfectly, and rechecking under Library, the caches files and the com.apple.ical.plist  that were dragged to the desktop have reappeared in Calendars and Preferences.
All is well. Many thanks for your reply! Sorry that I did not get to check it out.

  • Just bought an iPhone 5C.. Safari is non-functional! A blank frozen screen! Any one else experience this? Horrid design Apple! It's your freaking web browser! Google Chrome works but not Safari! I may simply return this "upgrade" unless someone can help

Just bought an iPhone 5C.. Safari is non-functional! A blank frozen screen... What gives? Safari is Apple's browser for gods sakes! Google Chrom works but not Safari? This is nuts. This is an "upgrade"?? Anyone else experiencing this? Or should I just give up and return this

    Are you always like this?
First try a Reset: Hold down the home and sleep buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.

  • MBP 15 non-retina 2012--Screen saver turning on while typing

    New 2012 MacBook Pro 15 (non-retina)
While typing or doing other items the screen saver turns on briefly and then fades away.   Have reset PRAM and SMC, deleted screen saver pref. file in the library.  I have not transferd my old accounts.  Have updated all software.  Any thoughts.  BTW-- This is the second MBP '12 I have gotten.  The first crashed and died 6 hours after turning it on.  The screen went blank and 3 beeps were the only sign that it onced worked.
    Thanks

Hmmm, today, my new non-retina MBP was behaving wierdly out in the garage, screen cycling between full brightness to very dark with a cycle of mabye 5 seconds.  Hasn't happened in the house, so I feel it is either a brightness or heat sensor issue.

  • Client non-responsive while in screen saver mode (intermittent)

This may not be the correct forum but this is only happening to the OD Clients.
Client System: G4 emac upgraded to 10.5 from 10.4.10
Server System: G5 xserve (single processor) 10.4.10
the client is setup to activate screen saver after 5 minutes, and required to enter the password to exit the screen saver. There is an auto logout feature enabled after 120 minutes (via server setting). If the client system is undisturbed after 60+ minutes, the client system will show the "pinwheel" and not respond. Only (non-preferred) solution is to power down the client and then power up again.
How can i debug this "feature"? I don't see anything in the logs.

It is an Issue with Symantec Antivirus

  • System Preference Panes non-functional (some)

I am "fixing" a friends MacBook Pro as a favour, and she's getting exactly what she paid for. It may be a few years old - not sure. It's running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, but I'm putting it in this more general section because it may not be SL-specific.
A few of the System Preferences panes don't work. A message comes up which simply says "non-functional" or something like that. Specifically, the ones whcih don't work are:
    Desktop and ScreenSaver
    Spotlight
    Energy Saver
Background: she forgot her password, and this is on a computer which was formerly someone else's. I couldn't even get the thing to the login screen, so something else was wrong besides her password, but I had her gray Snow Leopard installation disks, so got through the re-install process, made a new User for myself, as Administrator, and was then delighted to find that all of her data was still intact. I had to add myself in to the permissions on her UserID. I made a new user for her as well, because we still didn't have her own original password, and I looked around but couldn't find it. I copied all of her data over to her new UserID.
I also did all Updates, plus tried a 10.6.8. combo update.
Then I made an error. The former owners UserID was also still there. We couldn't log on as her either, without her password, but I figured that we didn't need that anymore, checked with the current owner first, and deleted the original User (and renamed the computer). I cannot reconstruct in my mind whether the System Preferences panes malfunction occurred before or after deleting the original User.
There is other minor wonkiness, but basically the machine is running and the data has been preserved (and now backed up). But one thing at a time: I've reinstalled the OS a couple of times, without improvement. I tried to upgrade to Mavericks, but after downloading, it told me that this computer could not be upgraded (without saying why not).
I haven't found any plist files which look relevant. I did more 2 of them out of HD-Library-Preferences, without any effect, so put them back. I find the Preference Panes in System-Library-PreferencePanes, but didn't see anything to do about that. The offending panes look like they're at least present.
Is there something simple I'm missing? Can I get those panes back?
    Thank you.
    Charles

Macbook pros need to be at least 2009 for 13" and 2007 for 15" and 17" to run Mavericks.  see system requiements.
At this point, the easiest solution will be to make your backups current, then wipe the drive and do a clean install of the system. That means more work reinstalling the backed-up data (you only want to restore data and third-party apps, not any of the system components), but it makes sure you get a clean, working copy of the system.

  • WINDOWS 8 SCREEN SAVER NOT TURNING ON

I have a TouchSmart with Windows 8 and the screen saver will not turn on.  Will work in preview but will not function.  Have tried all available screen savers and applied all with no luck.  Any ideas out there?

It was a long shot --
It does seem that if you want to splay a picture on the screen after a certain time, then you should be able to do so.
It might be the same as letting the screen "rest" in darkness, saving the screen, making the world a better place, all of that:
The computer should work the way you expect when the feature is offered to work a certain way.
    Just some ideas...
All the settings for your "Screen Saver" should be set to just less than any "dimming" or "display off" settings
Have you tried setting the Screen Saver to "None" and seeing if the screen can at least go to "dark" after the set time?  That would be something - it would tell you that the mechanism is working.
    Related to Above:
Try setting Background to None, set the time to say a minute less than the time you let the display dim/go-off, Reboot the computer to make sure the setting is "in place", and then test.
Have you tried using one of your own pictures?  If you do not have one, try downloading a picture from a location you trust - say from NASA if you are interested in "Things that are Star-Stuff"
The issue may be related to screen resolution vs. the resolution of the photo or "saver" you are trying to use.  There may be some sort of conflict.  This goes back to choosing either a different screen resolution or a different photo.
Do you have an extra monitor attached?  There may be a resolution conflict with the extra monitor if you have "extended view" set and the two resolutions are not compatible in some bizarre fashion.  Even if there is no conflict; if you do have an extra monitor attached, try turning if off and see if it makes a difference.

  • Screen saver overrides iTunes cover flow in Lion

On my new iMac (OSX 10.7.1, iTunes 10.4.1), when in full screen cover flow mode, the screen saver overrides this, which is annoying as I like to leave it playing with the artwork displayed. This did not happen on my old (Leopard) Mac. I can't find any preference setting that seems to fix this. I dont really want to turn off the screen saver - I didn't have to before, why now?

Have you tried creating a hot corner (System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver - Hot Corners) to disable the screen saver by parking mouse pointer in the "hot corner."
I'm assuming Lion still has this function.
