Screen share: multiple monitors

Hi all,
When I screen share via the Finder (vnc), I can choose which (or both) of my two monitors to share.
Many times, however, I screen share via iChat and only want to share the main one: does anyone know how to
"turn off" the second monitor ?

Hi,
If they are Using the Finder's Go Menu > Go to Server and entering in VNC://(IP Address) to get access you have the Access specified in System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing.
This can be set to allow Specific People or get them to Ask you.
If they Login by this method as You they have the same Access you do. (Not only your Home Folder but any other File and folder you can access in normal navigation of your computer - includes System Folders and Mounted Drives)
If they Login as another User they get the access to your Account in a similar fashion.
You can set a Password in the Computer Settings that restricts the Control from their end (they can only see where you lead)
In iChat is is as if you logged in from a second computer. The person if they are Sharing your Screen (they get to see your Screen) they can move the mouse and Click anywhere you can go.
If you then Use Fast User Switching iChat will do whatever you have set in the iChat > Preferences > General Settings to do when you use Fast User Switching.
If this is to be Away then in theory they could be looking and messing with all your stuff while you are busy elsewhere.
(I say "in theory" as I have never actually tested this. I do know that iChat is not Logged Out. They should not be able to see where you go in the other Mac User though)

Problems with viewing screens in multiple monitor configurations

Sorry if this is already posted somewhere, but after searching for 45 minutes, I couldn't find an answer.
Since upgrading an iMac to 10.5.7 I've had problems viewing over remote desktop. The iMac has a second display (20 inch Cinema Display) and mirroring is off. Before the upgrade, selecting which monitor to view was a snap. After upgrading, if I select one monitor after about 3 seconds is switches to a 2 monitor view. It doesn't matter which monitor I choose. When it displays both monitors simultaneously, the extra monitor's screen will flash every 3-5 seconds (via ARD, not in reality) and the mouse connection will freeze for about a half second.
Obviously, this makes controlling the machine difficult.
I've trashed all screen sharing and ARD related preferences on the machine without solving the problem.
If I turn off remote administration in the system settings and activate screen sharing, everything works fine (but I lose the other important features of ARD). No other computers on the network have a similar problem - but this is the only machine with 2 monitors. If I turn on mirroring, I still have the problem of the mouse control freezing every few seconds. I assume the connection is being dropped and refreshed.
Any help would be appreciated.

From the instructor workstation I can see any of the lab computers when viewing both of their monitors. When I try to look at just one monitor all I see is a black screen.
The video mode on the instructor workstation seems to be important. The instructor station has a second monitor that is a 1024x768 video projector. We like to have video mirroring on, of course. But in this mode, the student's screen always displays black.
If I switch mirroring off, I get the same thing IF I pull up the student's screen on the projector display. But I can see it if I pull it up on the local display. And it still shows when I move it over to the second display. However, if it's on the projector display and I try to select a different display it goes black.
But the whole thing is kinda flakey. Sometimes it works one way, sometimes it doesn't.
It works better if I set the resolution on the external display to 1600x1024. But that looks badly stretched on the screen.
All of this started happening with the latest ARD update.
I tried the same thing from a MacBook and it works great.
I suspect that it is a mismatch between ARD and the video card in the iMac. (Model Identifier: iMac7,1). The Video card is ATI, RadeonHD2600.

Full Screen on Multiple Monitors

It used to be that if I took a video on iTunes to Full Screen, which screen it would maximise on was dependent on which monitor the iTunes Library window was resident on ... Since 7.4, it seems to be utterly random! It always wants to go on to the secondary monitor. Sometimes it will agree to go on the primary if I change where I want windowed videos displayed from "in a separate window" to something else, back to separate again ... but if that does work, it's short lived.
And ... it's a bit annoying! lol ... so how can I persuade iTunes to go to full screen where I want it to, not where it wants to?
(And as a side question ... I don't suppose anyone knows how to ask it to go to full screen without disabling the other screen ... it would be nice to work on the primary monitor while showing a video full screen on the secondary, sans title bar.)

I really need this feature and have for some time now. I DJ with music, video and karaoke and use large screens with projectors. I have iTunes playlists and file elaborately customized to how I need it but I can't find a suitable workaround to have the second monitor (projector) presenting all music videos full screen (switching to full screen visualizer for music-only) yet still be able to manipulate & preview the playlist or otherwise work on my laptop.
Quicktime Pro does allow you to present full screen videos on a second monitor without disabling the laptop display, however it doesn't have all the playlist, visualizer or the organizational and continous file-playing ability and features of iTunes which I definitely need. Since iTunes is built on Quicktime why can't it do the same thing???
The only half-baked workarounds I can manage are:
A) Display the music videos in a separate window fit-to-screen (not full-screen) then "zoom" the projector to block out the edges (menu bar, etc.). Not only is this kinda tacky looking but you still can't use the visualizer this way.
B) Until another option becomes available, keep laptop screen mirrored with the projector image, but when I need to work in iTunes "freeze" the projector image (while on visualizer only) then exit full-screen while I make necessary changes to the playlist but with the music continuing to play. The problem with this is it has to be on visualizer when I freeze the projector (would look strange to freeze in the middle of a music video) and I would have to be careful when done working to use Command-T if music-only is playing to return to full-screen visualizer, or Command-F for a music video to return to full-screen video. I must also "un-freeze" the projector upon this return each time. I would also want to confirm that when a music video is done the full screen switches back to full-screen visualizer upon the next music-only song without having to reactivate the visualizer with Command-T (and vice versa for the next music video). This can get tedious, especially during a show when working alone and with lots going on around you!
Any other suggestions???

Screen Share Multiple Accounts

Under SL I was able to connect to server ( iMac_what ever ) came up and I was able to log onto one account - switch users via login screen - unlimited number of times . . .
Now with Lion : NOPE
Both puters are running Lion - one is in Japan / one in the US as I type . . . after logging out of one user - can no longer interface and get response to log back into an account on the LOGIN screen
Anyone know a FIX ?

Windows 8 on multiple monitors

Is there any way to make the windows 8 start screen STAY active on one of the monitors while working on the others? If not the start screen is just a horrible waste of space and time for me and countless other users who will have this same issue.
Also is there a way to make the start screen boot onto a monitor that is not my main? This needs to be implemented as it is an annoyance every time I boot up my computer.
I know this is an issue for many users already and I think this is a very needed addition to make any kind of use of the windows 8 start screen with multiple monitors.

Actually, I do agree with that. I've adopted Windows 8.1 for use at my software company because I believe it has enough merit to warrant upgrading. But I did it only after having spent a LOT of effort to determine that it A) does everything
we need for an engineering workstation and is stable and B) can be augmented to be pretty much as pleasant and productive to use as Windows 7 was
on the desktop. Of course this keeps us "current", so that we keep up with security and device driver development.
My broad point above, which Bob refuted in the details, was that the Win32 interface isn't much different at all than from within Windows 7. We kind of expected Microsoft to further their work on all fronts - making the "legacy desktop" side
actually better AND implementing the new Metro/Modern side - as well as improving the kernel under the covers. Instead, Microsoft seems to have thrown ALL its attention to Metro/Modern, while all but neglecting the kernel and actually deleting
things from the desktop interface. This has folks understandably irritated. Icing that cake is the fact that the Metro/Modern interface has been pretty much a moving target, because clearly Microsoft didn't think through the design of everything
it needed to be before deciding to use it as a basket for all their eggs. They STILL haven't quite figured out how closing apps figures into it all.
So now they appear to be backsliding, and the market has responded - quite coldly.
But, as usual, the developers of the world, also feeling the loss of functionality, have already come through with their products - many of them free - to augment Windows.
The one thing that has me quite concerned is that there are parts of Windows now quite clearly being neglected. Backup is a good example. More and more warning and error messages are appearing in the event logs indicating Windows likes its own
backup facilities less and less. At some point it's going to just stop working. Bob seems to tout flexibility, but actually useful features being just
lost is benefiting only those who want to "drive the market" (to somewhere
else - presumably to power just toys), and not serious computer users. Where does that leave us? Looking for a completely different approach.

does video chat on the new Messager on Mac allow screen share or multiple people?
i noticed they said that facetime will basically be taking over video calls on the mac and that Messager will take over ichat, but i'm worried they're going to drop all the nice features they had on ichat, like being able to share screens while video chatting with someone. or being able to chat with 2 people at once on a video call.
has anyone downloaded the beta of this yet and tried it out? i'm very curious

You can start a Video chat with one Buddy and then chose Screen Share and providing you and the Buddy are using UPnP to open ports it will instantly convert to a Screen Share.
A Screen Share is only 1-1 and is technically an Audio Chat +
The Plus bit is an VNC connection alongside the Audio Chat.
This VNC connection uses a random port - hence the need to use UPnP to open the ports in the router (Or Port Mapping Protocol) in Apple Base Station.
There used to be Add-ons that allowed the Desktop as Video Feed which would have been a sort of Screen Share but none of these have been updated for Lion.
An Example is iUSBCam (ShowMacster was another - My link no longer works)
CamCamX maybe a possibility if it works in Lion (It does say it neess iUSBCam for iChat)

This seems to be a regression with Flash Player v11.2.202.x (for all other browsers).
With Internet Explorer it is still working.

ARD, screen share and a second monitor

I have a 2008 20 inch iMac and 13" aluminium macbook. I wanted to use the iMacs screen with my macbook and decided to get ard (as it was kind of cheap on the app store).
I was a bit disheartened when I found that, when controlling the macbbok from the imac, I couldn't make the window go full screen. I understand this was a resolution issue that couldn't be gotten around.
However did find out that if set used ARD's screen share (rather than the light version that comes with OSX) that I could get full screen by reducing the resolution of the iMac.
However when I plug an external monitor into the macbook it all goes wrong. If I am using the OSX version of screen share (light) then I can choose to show only one display. If I use the ARD version I don't have that option and can only view both screens.
What I had hope for was to be able to use the fullscreen capability of ARDs screen share with my macbook with a second screen attached, but only view the macbook screen on my iMac.
Is there a way of achieving this with ARD. Or am I going to have to try an alternative software?

The obvious choice for an Apple display is the 24-inch LED (backlit) Cinema Display. It as the same Mini DisplayPort connector, and it will give you a few more USB ports. But it as some extra features that may not be necessary for use with an iMac, such as its own iSight camera, built-in speakers, and a power connector for use with MacBooks. And it costs $899 retail. But it would certainly look nice next to an aluminum iMac.

For a non-Apple display, there are many choices. They are generally cheaper. The standard digital connector is DVI. You can also use a display with a VGA connector, but DVI would be better if you are getting a new display. If your iMac is a 24-inch model, its built-in display has 1920x1200 native resolution. That would be a good choice for an external display, typically 23 or 24 inch. You can go all the way up to 2560x1600, which is typically a 30-inch display (including Apple's model). You can even get one with Dell branding that works.

I just purchased the same imac. I connected the other displays using a thunderbolt to dvi adapter and it works fine.

Auto-Detect Screen Resolution Does Not Work Across Multiple Monitors With Different Resolutions

The Acrobat Pro DC (15.007.20033.2203) auto-detect screen resolution feature does not work with multiple monitors at different resolutions. Acrobat looks fine on my hidpi primary laptop display (Razr 14" 2014) but is completely unusable if I drag or extend the application to a standard HD resolution secondary monitor. Dragging Acrobat from my primary desktop display to the secondary display causes the UI elements to become 2x as large as they should be and makes Acrobat unusable.
Is there a way to make Acrobat auto-detect the display that it is currently on?

To prevent it from happing again, you can
1. go to the Mouse preference and turn off the scroll zoom feature.
2. go to the Universal Access preference and disable the zoom features.

Leopard Screen share with 2 monitors

Screen share with Leopard is one of its best and most useful features for me so far. I'm doing it a couple times a day.
I have dual 20" screens. In Screen share, both show up on the other person's mac. If they have a laptop, that makes for very tiny viewing, because both have to fit on theiir screen.
If I turn on the mirror feature in the Monitors Sys Pref, then only one of the screens shows up. But on my end all open windows cram into one monitor.
What would be much better is if there could be a way to not turn on mirroring, and just be able to show the one monitor that has the menu.
This probably isn't doable right now. I'm just mentioning it in case someone comes up with a hack or method.

IChat Screen Sharing with Multiple Monitors

I love the new Screen Sharing feature included in iChat 4 as part of Leopard. It is an incredible diagnostic tool that will make it much easier for Mac users to help support each other.
The problem I've run into is that our "standard" config at work is a 15" MacBook Pro with a 23" external display. When doing Screen Sharing from this system, both displays are shrunk to about half their size so they can fit on the main screen of the remote computer. In many cases this works fine, but the images and text can be pretty small on the viewing computer.
Is there any way to control the scaling on the viewing computer? Is there any way on the computer that is being shared to say, only share this monitor?
Just trying to find a way to make the image easier to see on the remote computer.

Try to run all displays in the same resolution (the settings of the less advanced, smaller display, not the other way around). Additional displays require additional processing, close other applications. Unplug the 23" for now, try it when you've got everything else running. Restart connected computers after you've changed settings on any detectable display. Make sure the bandwidth is sufficient for screen sharing on both ends. (I would use Spaces on the remote computer to create speedy access to applications.) When this works, try to connect the external display.

System Monitor no longer does screen share

Recently lost the ability to Screen Share using System Monitor.
2 things changed since it worked last:
1. Created a new user
2. Loaded Remote Desktop on New User
I desperately need this functionality

If you're talking about the "Sharing" page of "System Preferences", then installing Remote Desktop will have changed the way screen sharing is set up. It's still there, but it's being controlled by a different service.
On the "Sharing" page, click the "Remote Management" service then click the "Computer Settings..." button. You can enable screen sharing with the VNC options there.

Video Over Multiple Monitors

Is it possible to create a 3840x1080 presentation in Keynote and then have it play across two monitors without using external hardware like the Matrox TripleHead2Go. Right now every time I play my 3840x1080 presentation it puts the show preview slides on one screen and scales the presentation to play on a single screen. I tried hooking up a 3rd monitor and it still does the same thing. My machine has 4 DVI's outs.

No Video via HDMI or screen share from MacMini

I've had the following setup for over a year now without any problems:
MacMini <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
Sony Blue-ray <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR <HDMI> Sony 55" TV
Cable Box <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
Since I don't have a keyboard or mouse for my mini I've setup "Screen Sharing" so I can login from my MacBook and control it as needed.
Everything was fine until a few days ago, I switched inputs from my Cable box over to the Mini and there was no video. I tried "login in" to my mini via my MacBook and I can't see the desktop, it's just a black box. I can however see the 3TB USB 3.0 drive that i have attached to my mini and have access to all my files.
So to recap my Mini starts up, power light comes on, makes the startup sound but I get no video on my TV or in "Screen Share" from my MacBook. I do however have access to my files on my Mini via my MacBook.
Has anyone had this situation before? I've checked all the HDMI cables by taking the one from my Cable box that is working and plugging it into the Mini to no avail. I've also restarted the mini multiple times.

Same here! I've been using Screen Sharing to use this mac mini since I purchased it in 2011. I've never had a monitor hooked up to it.

A few days ago I connected my 41" Samsung TV to the mac mini using an HDMI cable. Since doing so, I can still connect to the mac mini and browse the mac mini's file system in Finder (Desktop, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, etc...) but when I click Share Screen... with that mac mini via the Finder (as I've successfully done for years) it just hangs, and eventually I get the message "Connection failed to mac mini... Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."
So to recap, the only thing at all that's changed on that mac mini was plugging in the HDMI cable to the television. And now I cannot use Share Screen with it.
For what it's worth, I did hard reboot the mac mini and was able to successfully Share Screen. But after going away for most of the day and coming back, now that I try to Share Screen I again get the error message I pasted above.
Any help would be really appreciated. I don't want to have to reboot my mac mini just to Share Screen for a couple hours every time I want to use it.
Edited to add: while I can't Share Screen to that mac mini any more since plugging it in to the tv with the HDMI cable, for what it's worth I can still control iTunes using the Remote app for iOS. I doubt that's too relevant but adding it here just in case.
