Screen share via Apple TV

How do I set up my iMac and Apple TV so that DVD'a played on my iMac can be displayed on my HDTV via Apple TV.

Your equipment needs to support AirPlay.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
You will also need a third party DVD application such as VLC.

  • Changing screen share speeds?

    Hello
We have comcast cable. For whatever reason, whenever someone was using iChat to video chat, every other connection in the house (ethernet or wifi) would slow to a stop. I changed the bandwidth to 500kbps on all computers and the issue was resolved.
However, we noticed that if one computer does a "screen share" via iChat that the same problem still exists. How can I change settings to relieve the screen sharing from blocking the whole up/down speeds?
    Thanks for the help

    Hi,
    My first though was Hummm.
The Video Data is made up by iChat assessing the Internet Speed and Processor speed and giving you a certain size pic (pixels) at a certain Frame rate.
With the Bandwidth in the Video Preferences set at NONE and a Intel Core Duo at least you will get 30 fps with a pic at 0.3Mp (640 X 480 pixels) when your Internet Upload speed is above 500kbps
This tends to be the standard pic size for anyone running an Intel Mac.
Older G5s and G4s will depend on Processor speed and whether they have Dual Processors.
iChat can reduce the size of the pic (Less pixels per frame = Less data a sec) based on the Internet Speed it can see and then the Processor speed if if feels that is too low.
This can be seen somewhat directly based on the size of the Video Chat window iChat opens for you (Although this can be manually resized).
Typically on my G4/1Ghz Dual Processor with an Upload speed of around 750kbps I see speeds reported in the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) of around 400-500kbps for a 480 X 320 pic at about 15fps
My MacBook Pro sees the same sort of speeds but for a 640 X 480 Pic at 30fps
The reason for the Humm is because typically Screen Sharing comes in at about a 1/3 of that (About 150kps in the Connection Doctor) whilst 1-1 Audio chats come in at just under Dial-Up speeds at about 48-50kbps (possibly the max for a 56kbps Modem) - even when iChat is set to 500kbps.
At NONE the Screen Sharing and Audio Chats does not vary upwards a all.
I can run 3 way chats with my two computers and a Buddy (Mostly the Apple Test accounts) and not effect my son using his X-Box 360 with On-line games.
If your Connection Doctor is reporting similar speeds fro Video chats and Screen Sharing then I would test the Connection speed.
    http://www.speedtest.net/
You should see results that are about 80% of the Max Speed quoted by your ISP that you pay for.
This is in part to losing some to maintain the connection with the ISP and the Test itself.
The results can be effected by what is On line at your house at the time:-
Someone doing Downloads, Watching YouTube or other Video Streaming, even LAN games and On-line games and other IM apps.
Also see this Apple Article for iChat 4 (Leopard)
Figures do not vary greatly for iChat 5 (Snow Leopard)
These figures and the Info do suggest that Screen Sharing could take up to 300kbps
I have never seen figures this high but if you are seeing them that high then a further reduction in the iChat Bandwidth Setting may help.
However anything below the 500kbps setting will impinge on your ability to Host 4 way Video chats. (Don't even bother with the 100kbps as it is too low for Video chats 1-1)

  • After the 10.9.2 upgrade I can't screen share with any Macs using Back to my Mac.

I did the 10.9.2 combo upgrade on a bunch of Macs I manage and now I can't use Back to my Mac for screen sharing on any of them. Does this upgrade mess with the original settings? Any suggestions? Anyone else see this?

Back to my Mac has been unreliable for me (and a lot of other users) ever since the Mavericks upgrade, 10.9.0.
I find that if I turn all screen sharing off, then back on again, remote macs can share my screen. But the fix usually lasts just a few days, sometimes as little as 24 hours.
So everything depends on me remembering to open Sys Prefs and then toggle Back to My Mac (in iCloud) and Remote Login, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing (all in Sharing) in the morning before I go to work. If I remember, I'm able to do screen sharing that day from work. If I forget, I'll get errors when I try to Screen Share via the link that appears under Shared in the Finder sidebar. The link is reliably present in the Finder sidebar, it just doesn't work if I haven't refreshed the Sys Prefs settings.
Hope this workaround is helpful. Wish they had a more permanent fix.

  • Screen share: multiple monitors

    Hi all,
When I screen share via the Finder (vnc), I can choose which (or both) of my two monitors to share.
Many times, however, I screen share via iChat and only want to share the main one: does anyone know how to
"turn off" the second monitor ?
    Thanks,
    Benny.

    Hi,
If they are Using the Finder's Go Menu > Go to Server and entering in VNC://(IP Address) to get access you have the Access specified in System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing.
This can be set to allow Specific People or get them to Ask you.
If they Login by this method as You they have the same Access you do. (Not only your Home Folder but any other File and folder you can access in normal navigation of your computer - includes System Folders and Mounted Drives)
If they Login as another User they get the access to your Account in a similar fashion.
You can set a Password in the Computer Settings that restricts the Control from their end (they can only see where you lead)
In iChat is is as if you logged in from a second computer. The person if they are Sharing your Screen (they get to see your Screen) they can move the mouse and Click anywhere you can go.
If you then Use Fast User Switching iChat will do whatever you have set in the iChat > Preferences > General Settings to do when you use Fast User Switching.
If this is to be Away then in theory they could be looking and messing with all your stuff while you are busy elsewhere.
(I say "in theory" as I have never actually tested this. I do know that iChat is not Logged Out. They should not be able to see where you go in the other Mac User though)
And yes, it was a totally different question

  • RealVNC Timeout after idle with Screen Share

    Hello-
Dual G5 Powermac running downstairs as a server with screen sharing enabled,
Windows XP SP3 Laptop Running RealVNC to use remote desktop.
Everything works fine, but when I minimize RealVNC and come back to it a little while later (at least 5min), it wont refresh and then when I retry the connection I get a blip of the 'attempting to connect...' window and then nothing. It seems as though if I let the connection sit without input for a little while, the connection times out and will not let me reconnect. Is there a setting in OSX screen sharing to prevent this, or maybe in my realVNC viewer?
Could it be because I using port forwarding and www.dyndns.com to allow me a URL to use outside my intranet?
    thanks.

  • Screen sharing via VPN

    Hey guys,
I finally got my VPN connection working remotely. I was told it would be like I was actually on my local network...and it pretty much is except I can't do a screen share. Is there anyway to make this possible over VPN? When I'm locally connected I can screen share via any machine on the network.

When you're on VPN you can do anything you can do locally over the LAN, except use auto-discovery protocols such as Bonjour to locate servers/services (at least without jumping through several other hoops).
This means that you can certainly use VNC to share your server's screen but the server won't appear in the Finder's sidebar - you'll need to know the address of the server to do it.
Just open Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server and enter the server's address in the form of:
    vnc://a.b.c.d
(where 'a.b.c.d. is either the ip address or the hostname of the server).
The same is true for other services, too - you can get there, but you have to know where you're going first.

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • Can't connect via Screen Share or Web Server, but can ping and ssh

Bit of an odd problem here.
My Mountain Lion Mac Pro (called "Trogdor" for convenience) is connected to my work university network. I can ping it from anywhere-- elsewhere on the network, from home behind a firewall. Can connect over ssh from everywhere. I can also connect to other computers (on the same network or at home behind a firewall) from Trogdor via ssh, Screen Sharing, etc.
But I can't Screen Share into Trogdor, and I can't connect to Trogdor's built-in web server, either system-wide (in /Library/WebServer) or for my username (~/Sites). (I can connect to the web server from Trogdor.)
Note that I can do both of these for other computers on the same network (same subnet, etc), so it's not a network issue. I can't do these from anywhere: same network or from home. I have this problem whether I use Trogdor's hostname or its IP address. (I can look up its hostname using the IP address with the "host" tool in Terminal, and vice versa.)
So it sounds like a port issue, right? Except I don't think I've ever messed with my port settings directly. How do I diagnose the problem? Should I scan my ports? Can I return port settings to default?
    Thanks!

I would like to inquire about how I could have my iPad 2 repaired or replaced. I bought it With a credit card via apple store website last June 19 of this year. At first, I already noticed a little white spot in the middle of the screen visible when the display on screen is dark. I thought this was okay. Now, My problem with it is that, it now has green discolorations at the center whenever the screen display is black or dark I.e. When a website's color is black or dark or whenever I go to the search interface.
    I am from the Philippines.
Please attend to this inquiry as promptly as possible. I'm sorry I have to send it here since I cannot see any email or inquiry page on the apple website. I also cannot reach the toll free number on my mobile phone.
    Thank you very much.

  • Stream Mac Screen to TV via Apple TV

Is there a way to transfer your normal Mac screen to the TV via Apple TV? Shouldn't pose to many techincal difficulties and would be a nice feature as you could run a webbrowser and BBC Iplayer that way. Is this possible?

I noticed your reply about "can't stream anything via an Apple TV that isn't a file in an itunes lib."
You should be able to use an ATV with your Sony TV via HDMI cable and you can use it to display your iPhoto photos from your iMac.
Otherwise, the only way you can provide content to an ATV is through an iTunes library, either by syncing or streaming to it from the library. If you make your own files, you can import them into the iTunes library and then you can sync or stream them to an ATV.
You can also get content directly on an ATV from the iTunes store from the available content listed in the ATV menu (such as podcasts, movies and TV shows).

i want to screen share whats on my laptop screen to apple tv ...websites especially

Unfortunately you cannot currently share the screen of a computer on the Apple TV.
The new operating system "mountain lion" reportedly offers this feature, but may be subject to some hardware restrictions, we will have to wait and see.

/how do i get whats on my computer screen on my tv via apple tv?

You have to have Mac OS X Mountain Lion installed on your MacBook, however the only way to get it right now is if you are a developer.
Other than that, you will have to wait until it is officially released.
