Screen sharing disappears

So I have Remote Management turned on for all of our in house machines so I can diagnose remotely. From one of the workstations I work on, sometimes when I go to my network list of machines and some of the machines are missing. If i click a computer to connect to, the screen sharing button wont be there.
The only workaround I have found is to go into system preferences->sharing and turn remote management off and back on. All of my machines and servers then show up again in networking and I can screen share with them.

  • Mouse pointer disappears when screen sharing

When I use Back To My Mac from work to screen share my home Mac the pointer disappears. When I first connect and put the screen sharing window into full screen mode (into a separate space) everything is fine. I can then switch back to my current Macs screen and the mouse pointer is still working. But when I switch back to the screen sharing space the pointer is gone.

    yes! i have this problem.
the difference is that it only happens when I'm using my thunderbolt display.
i have an mb air and a mbp retina. there is no issue until i'm connected to it - then i get this freeze issue during screen share and my hidden dock won't appear.
i've had 2 calls with applecare to date. will update you after my next call
    have you had any luck?

  • File Sharing, Screen Sharing keeps disappearing

I have one machine out of five in my studio, all running 10.10 that keeps having problems staying visible for File Sharing, Screen Sharing, Printer Sharing, and I suppose any other Bonjour service.  It's unpredictable, but every couple days I need to go into the Sharing Preference Pane and uncheck/recheck each service.  Just this one machine.
    Anybody else seeing this?

how are you connecting to the machine? is it a specific pice of software? have you tried a different method?
Are you connecting via bonjour? try IP instead.

  • 10.6.8 MBPro Screen Sharing suddenly can not connect to our other Macs.

We've used Screen Sharing from our MBPros for the past few years to manage our Mac file & media servers. Last year we replaced our G5 file server with a Mac Mini with Lion server. No problems - we could still use Screen Sharing to manage both this Lion file server and the Snow Leopard MacPro that's hooked up to our TV (among other things).
Friday morning my MBP could not see or connect to the Lion file server - the MBPs have the Lion server's data drives in Login Items so they mount when we log in. I also cound not Screen Share to either the Lion server or the SL MacPro. I checked the MBP's ethernet connection and could get to our router and the internet. When I tried to connect via Screen Sharing (by using the Share Screen... button in a Finder window, by using the Connect to Server command with vnc:// protocol, or by using the ScreenSharing menulet) I would get the "Connecting to Lion server" alert but nothing further. I left it for 10 minutes or so and it eventually disappeared but the connection never opened.
I checked the two servers and both were up and running. From the SL MacPro I could use Screen Sharing to get to the Lion server - and my MBPro too. From the Lion server I could Screen Share to the MacPro and my MBPro also.
The problem appeared to be with my MBPro. I switched to an unprivledged user account on it and found I could then get to both servers using Screen Sharing. So it was just my account on the MBPro. Rebooting did not help. Turning on AirPort, connecting to our home AirPort Extreme and unplugging the ethernet cable did not change anything with my account connecting to the servers.
I figured something somehow got pranged in my account's credentials. I used Keychain Access to delete all keychains containing the servers' names, IP addresses or sharing. I was asked for my credentials when I mounted the server's shared drives, but not when I tried Screen Sharing - got the same "Connecting to Lion server" or "Connecting to media server" dialogues and was never asked for username or password, but never connected either.
I cleared all caches using the utility Maintenance in case my MBPro was using invalid cached info. No improvement.
Saturday morning I shut down everything on our entire network - FiOS "modem"/router, Netgear gigabit switch, AirPort Snow, AirPort Extreme, MacPro, MacMini, both MacBookPros... even the FiOS cable box. Still no improvement.
IPv6 is disabled on the Lion server. All the Macs have all curent updates applied.
I've spent most of today Googling for solutions and trying them out. None have worked - though I see several very recent reports in these Apple Communities about Screen Sharing suddenly not working.
I really do not want to have to move to a new account on my MBP - and what's to say it won't happen again? Anyone have other suggestions?

    sunnovagun!
Hitting the Log Out button in the MobileMe panel worked. I can now connect to both the SnowLeopard and Lion servers just like I used to.
My condition appears to have been slightly different from yours, gmia - the MobileMe on my MBP had the correct info, but hose are not the credentials i use to remote to the two servers. I'm guessing that for some reason ScreenSharing began using my MobileMe credentials instead of what I had saved in the keychains.
Wonder if it had anything to do with the shutdown of the MM servers. That would be odd as using ones apple ID to log into a Mac remotely was new with Lion, and I had the same problem with our SnowLeopard server - which I remote into much more frequently.
Probably didn't hurt though to reboot the entire network...

  • Can't start Screen Sharing, Video Chat, or Audio Chat

    Hi there,
I've been through countless Apple Discussion and other website threads, but I can't figure this out.
I just got my dad a brand-new iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on it. I'm using a MacBook Pro, also with 10.8.3 on it. We're both using the Messages app, signed into our respective Google Talk accounts (not Apple IDs with Google email addresses).
But for the both of us, "Invite to Video Chat," "Invite to Audio Chat," and "Share Screen With..." are grayed out in the Buddies menu, even though both of us have "Video Chat Enabled," "Audio Chat Enabled," and "Screen Sharing Enabled" checked off. I unchecked the option to consolidate the various Buddy Lists in the Messages > Preferences > General pane, and when I go to my Gmail account's Buddy List, I see the four buttons underneath the list (with my dad's name highlighted), but only the "A" button is clickable--not the other buttons for Audio (the phone icon), Video (the camera icon), or Screen Sharing (the two rectangles layered over one another icon).
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this (short of using a completely different method of screen sharing)?

    HI,
On your GoogleMail Page pull down your own Name/ID
    Click Account
    Choose "Products" from Menu.
Enable "Talk" (Sign in to Dashboard far right)
This is separate from the settings to actions on the Web Mail Page accessed in the Settings icon.
However I am not sure if the setting absent there if TALK has not been enabled as it was done some time ago for for me as well.
Jabber apps can have  Priority Setting to allow people to be logged in via several devices and be sure a messages goes to the right device at the time.
iChat version 3 through 5 had the same Priority as the Web Browser login and would stop text Messages getting through.
iChat would show the Buddy still on line if they were logged in via the web page at a later stage
but the Video and Audio green icons would disappear from the Buddy List and the icons at the bottom would be greyed out.
Messages has a default priority of 0 compared to iChat's 23.
However I have never managed to work out which end of the scale outranks the other.
Essentially logging in to Google Mail web page to Check things is likely to stop the ability to Video chat.
This is because Jabber app use a Protocol  called Jingle to connect and this is not compatible with the SIP iChat and Messages uses.
It is included in the Web Browser Plug-in you can get from Google.
The default setting for the Bandwidth setting is the NONE one.
However it can pay to set it to 500kbps.
This helps when  internet speeds that are faster vary too much for the Buffering in iChat and Messages to work.
In broad terms a 5% variance in a 10Mbps download speed can be 500kbps.
Forcing Message to only use 500kbps is fast enough for 4 way video chats but is well below any variance interference.
It can also help where the ISP slows the connection as it thinks it is a Peer-to-Peer file sharing event.
Video and Audio chats (including Screen Sharing) are peer-to-Peer connections.

  • Is it possible to use screen sharing between lion and mountain lion

I could always use screen sharing between my 2010 macbook and my 2007 macmini, both with lion. But now since I upgraded the macbook to mountain loin it doesn't work. The macmini did at first show up on the macbook finder sidebar under sharing like it always had done but as soon as I tried to connect the sharing option disappeared and won't come back. The macmini can still see the macbook however, its on the finder there. But when I try to connect from the mini to the macbook I get an error message that says something like "server error" and contact administrator(that's me!)I can't upgrade the mini to mountain lion as it's too old.So it this an incompatibility between the two operating systems or is it something else?
I also tried to do it with BackTo My Mac,enabled through icloud on both computers but no luck, not even showing the Back to my Mac icon on either Finder sidebar like it's supposed to.When I did it through system preferences-icloud,it said this was successfully enabled but it just doesn't work at all.
Cross about this since I always use the macbook to control the macmini which is plugged into a flat screen tv and it's much easier than fiddling around with a mouse and keyboard.

I can screen share my wife's Lion iMac using Mountain Lion and the reverse is true. If the computer is not showing up to be selected under shard on the left column of the finder it is probable a connection issue. I would check my home network, restart the the macs and toggle the sharded settings and energy saving settings like wake for network activity. Be sure and set up iCloud on both your macs and turn on UPnP if you have a router for your home network serving up NAT IP Numbers. UPnG will make the port forwarding enteries in you router to allow you macs to connect behind the firewall created by nat addressing.
I am currently having a problem with back to my mac. S
creen shares great the the Lion iMac but Mountain Lion to Mountain on one computer will not connect if the computer is sleeping. It lights the screen on the sleeping computer but never shows on the computer requesting to share. File share always workd. If I wake the computere before I attemp the connection, screen share work as it should. If I try to screen share while the second computer is sleeping, It will never work again until I restart the iMac.

  • IChat & Screen Sharing

I have just read that Apple is going to disable iChat accounts that use the old format of @mac.com or @me.com.  I have used this for years as a way to assist my parents (in their mid-80s) via screen sharing.  It has been a Godsend and quite frankly is the reason they have been willing to continnue trying to use the computer.  They use a 2007 iMac running Mountain Lion and I use a 2008 iMac also running Mountain Lion.  I would love to upgrade to a new iMac but it just isn't in my budget and my parents will certainly not replace their iMac as they barely use it - it is pristine!  We are in different countries separated by the Atlantic Ocean and more and screen sharing makes it possible for me to help them use their compute for the most basic of tasks and to resolve simple issues such as an icon disappearing from their dock, or losing a file as they cannot understand the concept of Folders.  (When they turn on their iPad they are flummoxed that it shows what they were looking at last and not the Home screen every time, even though I have suggested they always press the home button before they stop using it).
I have tried using join.me, (which has been bought by Logmein - evil) and one or two other services but none of them is as straightforward as iChat's screen sharing capability.  Even this often causes trouble as they don't see the small window that pops up saying that I have requested to share their screen!
If there is anyone who has suggestions for alternative ways to see their screen and where either they or I can "drive" I woudl be most grateful.

    Hi,
    NO !!.
You have to use an AIM Name if you have iChat 5 or earlier or the first version of iChat 6
Since Apple went to iCloud all the MobileMe @me.com IDs have become defunct.
In the later version of iChat 6 and Messages the app makes a Check with Apple as well As AIM to perform the login.
This "double check" is not done by the earlier version and it means that iCloud Issued @me.com and @icloud.com IDs don't work in those earlier versions.
The Article is misleading as it talsk about @me.com IDs that already don't work.
Changing to @iCloud.com is not going to help as explained above.
If you are keeping those version of iChat then get an AIM name.
If you are upgrading to Mavericks the article implies they will still work in Messages.

  • Screen sharing on local network - broken on snow leopard

I will try to be clear:
problem is: cannot get a screen sharing window on mac mini when accessing from macbook pro on local network. Problem began after clean install on snow leopard all computers.
setup: 1 mac mini, two macbook pros (1 is 1st gen, 1 2nd gen), all connected through Airport Wireless N basestations.
filesharing works fine. all computers recognised.
when i connect to screen sharing, blue bar comes for a minute, then goes off, then on again, then after a couple more minutes just disappears. screen sharing does not give me an error message, just stops trying. please help, getting fairly desparate.
    best,
    Charles

This is not normal. Although I have no experience with screen sharing SL-to-SL, I have no problems connecting from my MBP running SL to several other machines running older systems.
What might be different between my setup and yours I'm not sure. But here are a few things:
    1) At home, I'm also using an 'n' AirPort Extreme base station, but I'm using 'g' mode, because my MBP is the only machine in the house capable of 'n' speeds. No problems with the PB G4 or iMac G5 running Leopard.
    2) At my wife's office, we're using a LinkSys router (not an 'n' router), and no problems accessing the screen of a headless Intel Mac Mini running Tiger.
    3) You mention base stations, emphasis on the "s". If you have multiple base stations, that could be the problem. Have you tried simplifying the network so there's only one base station in use?
    4) What settings are you using for Screen Sharing in System Preferences -> Sharing? Look both in the main window and in the window that pops up if you push the Computer Settings button.

  • Another Screen Sharing malfunction!

Of my three G4 Macs (Powerbook, iMac & Mini), my Mini has stopped accepting Screen Shares from the other computers, and even from a PC using TightVNC.
This behaviour has only cropped up in the last few days, roughly about the same time as I installed the latest security update. Coincidence?
Anyway, I've checked all my sharing and firewall preferences. The firewall accepts incoming connections for specific services, including Screen Sharing.
When I look at the appfirewall.log as I try to connect, I see the following message:
    Oct 13 22:25:28 xMini Firewall[48]: Deny OSXvnc-server connecting from 192.168.1.75:50036 uid = 0 proto=6
Which would lead me to believe that the firewall is bouncing the screen share request. However, switching off the firewall does not result in a successful connection, either.
It should be noted that I can Screen Share from my Mini to my other Macs.
I've tried some of the suggestion posted on this forum...
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=441030
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730539&tstart=0
    But to no avail.
This one's got me stumped, any suggestions greatly appreciated!

  • Sharing and Screen Sharing suddenly become flakey.

I've been ignoring this problem for a while, but it bugs me and I'd like to figure out what is going on.
My G4 733 that for years has shown up and worked on my other computers as Shared in the side bar and allowed screen sharing has decided to start behaving oddly.
Sometimes it works just fine. Sometimes when I connect to it it shows "Connecting…" and then disappears. Sometimes it functions fine as a fileserver, and then disappears when I try to use screen sharing.
Oddly, I can always connect to it properly using "Connect to Server…" and the IP address (it has an assigned address) and I can always control it with Apple Remote Desktop. Even shows up on the ARD scanner.
This is true for both of my Snow Leopard machines (MacPro and MacBook).
G4 is running the same 10.3.9 it has had since it released. Nothing is ever changed on it (it a web and FTP server). I did upgrade the firmware of my Linksys WRT310N, that may have been around when it went wrong.
I've checked the usual things, permissions, disks and network settings…
No idea what would cause all this.
    Thanks to anyone with ideas.

Same thing happened to me with an eMac running 10.4. I found this thread (see below) a short while ago, did what it suggested, and the problem went - at least in the short time since.
Go to the Sharing Pane/Services and turn each service OFF with the Stop button, waiting for it to 'take'. Then click on Start, and wait again.
    Here's the other thread:
*"If you have trouble networking two computers (can't connect with Sidebar method or Go…Connect to Server method) try this workaround:*
*"When enabling or disabling Personal File sharing (or other Service) under the Services tab of the Sharing Preference pane, always click on the Start/Stop button, and wait for several seconds until you see the change effected before quitting the Services tab. Do not, repeat not, directly tick or clear the checkbox for the item - you may create a false status indication for this item."*
    Good luck,

  • Screen Sharing display of Finder app lags & black patches

I'm trying to share the screen of a headless Mac Mini with a Retina MBP over ethernet (via thunderbolt display and time capsule) using the built in screen sharing app, and my fourth generation iPad over wifi using a VNC app. My problems are as follows:
    - intermittent black patches over the screen which I have drag a window over, or move a mouse over, to make disappear. This only happens on the Retina MBP, and doesn't happen on the iPad. This is considered solved in another thread, but the solution was to update Apple Remote Desktop which I do not have installed.
    - On both Retina MBP and iPad, the outputted display does not update when I make a change in the Finder application. E.g. say I create a new folder. I will not see the folder I have created until I drag the window elsewhere.
This problem is the same regardless of the display quality (full or adaptive), or the resolution.
    I appreciate any help.

  • Screen sharing and multiple users

I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
    root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
    username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
    Was that clearer?
    Thanks again
    Ursus

  • Airport Extreme is allowing access to screen sharing, file sharing from external IP addresses (some from China, Canada etc)

How to get control over the ports/port forwarding etc in Airport Extreme?
How to make AE drop packets to certain ports from external ports.  Or create whitelist/blacklists?
I figured out where the MAC filtering is!  (It is inside the Timed Access Control).  I wish it had a list of connected device and allowed me to select, name and add them.
I am getting requests from Chinese IP to the screen sharing ports forwarded to my iMac.  Had requests to other ports as well.  There was one IP address from CANADA too.
I want to open file sharing for local use only.

Why is Airport Extreme forwarding requests for screen sharing from external ip addresses to my imac?  I don't have a public address, nor use dynamic dns service, and I have removed the server app (at least I think I have, but Apple Store doesn't think so).
