Screen Sharing Impossible!

hello guys, i've tried almost everything to get my ichat screen sharing working but unfortunately it's impossible..
I've already read thousands of topics talking about this issue and no one was able to help me. so i've decided to create my own topic.
I've tried:
ichat preferences, since Bandwidth Limit from None to 2 Mbps
Quicktime Streaming Preferences from Automatic to 1.5 MBPs
System Preferences > Sharing:
1) Screen Sharing enabled (only option selected at the time)
2) Internet Sharing disabled
Both Macs Running Leopard 10.5.7. I live in Italy and my mom and friends in Brazil.
My internet is 6035(Kbps) / 509(Kbps)
My modem is a D-link DSL-2640B with UPnP enabled. (I've also tried forwarding ports 5060, 5190, 5220, 5222, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 5900 and 16384 through 16403)
My mother's internet is 1005(Kbps) / 300(Kbps)
My friend's internet is 13000(Kbps) / 1000(Kbps)
My mother was using a modem Parks Altavia 670R. This modem is quite old, and has no UPnP so, i thought it would be the problem and bought another modem.
So, now my friend and my mother are using a Thomson/Alcatel SpeedTouch 510 (V6) also with UPnP and they've also tried port forwarding as well as I mentioned before.
My friend is able to share his screen with his other friends and so am i with my other friends..
We've also tried:
Trash QuickTime preferences
Trash all iChat preferences
Change iChat's port to 443 and turn on SSL
Turn on All in Security System Preference
Set access for specific services and applications and select ichat.
Our macs are all intel macs and completely updated.
Don't know what else to do.
Please, someone hive me a hand!

Ok,
For a Long time (Since at least their Version 3 firmware) Thomson-Alcatel have done what is called SIP Binding.
This forces all SIP data to use port 5060 whether that is the port is using that one or not.
(There was an International Standard at one point that SIP would be on Ports 5060-5063 - one at a time if one was bus)
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is uses by VoIP phones and apps.
Apple decided iChat was a VoIP app and included SIP as the Connection Method behind the scenes.
Up to Version 4.2.7 of the Thomson-Alcatel firmware you could fully "unbind" the SIP from port 5060 as in practice the modems thought it should go to a Phone and not pass it to the computer.
The symptoms were intermittent success in Audio Only and Video Chats.
Out of 50 Buddies 10 would be successful all the time.
10 Buddies now and then Success
30 Buddies would be unsuccessful
In version 5, 6 and 7 of their Firmware the SIP Binding can only be partially Undone.
It moves the Split to 15:10:25 (a change from 1 in 5 to about 1 in 3 only)
More here
Having said all that the Screen Sharing can be a bit of a different problem aside from the Audio Only chat that goes with the Screen Share that could suffer form the above issue.
The ports in iChat 4 that the Screen Share actually happens on is a random port.
Consider it as two connections that happen at the same time.
The Screen Share and the Audio Chat
The Audio Chat remains on port 16402
If you can Video or Audio Only chat with this Buddy that is not where the Problem is.
The Screen Share part is on a random port. A range is not even listed By Apple in the Article. (This one does not even list the Jabber and Bonjour ports)
This means that you either have to start opening ranges of Ports in Port Forwarding or use UPnP which will open the ports from the application side (the application has control over what ports are opened)
Some D-Links do not have UPnP.
Those that do hide it away in the Set up pages in Tools in the top Menu and Misc in the side menu when Tools is opened.
It is Not On by default.
It should not be used with Port Forwarding (Virtual Server) or Port Triggering (Applications) as clashes can occur.
If you can not screen share with other people it is more likely to be your end - IF you can Audio chat to this Buddy.

  • Screen sharing and the existing plug-in

I'm thinking about building a nice e-learning solution but
screen sharing is essential. Can someone explain to me why it's
technically impossible to use the screen sharing api like it is
being used by ConnectNow? I don't mind that my users will have to
download the plug-in just like the ConnectNow users have to do.
Given the fact that CoCoMo is a hosted service it should be good
for the Adobe business and the technology is already
    there...

Nothing (or almost nothing) is technically impossible :)
The problem here is the addin has access to the client system
resources (screen and keyboard) and so for security reason it only
runs signed applications (and the only application we sign today is
    ConnectNow).
In order to enable SDK applications to run in the addin we
should either forego the signing (not an option :) or we get into
the business of validating and signing developer applications, with
policies possibly even stricter than Apple AppStore :)
We have some other ideas on how to offer this functionality
but right now are just ideas, but we understand that this is a
feature very appealing to many of you and and it's high in our list
    of most requested features.

  • Why do I need to start up Screen Sharing twice to get it to work ?

I have an Intel Mac Mini connected to my TV, so I started using Screen Sharing from my MacBook Pro to be able to work on it when others were watching TV.
Both Macs used to have OSX 10.5 Leopard, and everything worked fine.
Now they both have OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, and whenever I startup Screen Sharing, the connection-windows asking for my Name & Password comes up properly, but then it hangs... it stays in "Connecting..." for ever (litteraly).
I'm not able to quit or force-quit the connection-window by then, so it stays in view...
(Screen Sharing isn't even listed in the force-quit list as a running app)
    but...
when I just try Screen Sharing again, I get connection immediately and it seems to work flawlessly...
...it's just that the connection-window is impossible to quit...
it stays in view an is really annoying...
    this looks really crappy...
can anyone tell me why I do need to startup Screen Sharing twice to get it to work ?
    Is this a bug ?
(If so : please apple fix this a.s.a.p.)
...or am I doing something wrong ?
(if so : what am I doing wrong ? and how can I get rid of this annoying screen ?)
Thank you for your kind reply.
    Toon.B

it's October and this really annoying problem still exists !
the unnamed screensharing-loginwindow keeps "Connecting...", and I'm unable to shut it down...
...even after my screen sharing session is over
...even force-quitting is impossible (this 'app' just isn't showing up in the force-quit-window...)
please Apple - fix this ; under 10.5 it was working great !
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this ?
    (besides restarting my Mac)
    Thanks !

  • Ichat Screen Sharing will not work no matter what I try...

I have read all the forums and can't find an answer. Something that should be so simple such as screen sharing through iChat (as advertised) is virtually impossible. This I can not explain. Especially since video chat works!
Both computers in question here are macbooks, both have leopard, both are or wireless networks. Is the router blocking the connection and if so, why will it allow video chat but not screen sharing?
There is either something real simple that I am missing here, or this is not possible at all.
some things that i have tried:
    disabling stealth mode
on the firewall, enabling incoming traffic from ichat
made sure screen sharing is enabled in ichat
made sure the settings were the same on the remote apple computer
tried unchecking everything in the sys pref "sharing"
Both of the parties involved are using the same ISP, this really is mind boggling.
Is this a bug that is being fixed or what? I am not trying to perform a miracle here, but this is getting ridiculous.
If this is a router issue, apple should release some documentation on how to configure ichat screen sharing through your router.
If anyone has had this problem and has a fix, I would love to hear it. Keep in mind I have googled this many times and tried just about every piece of advice that I could find on this.
    Thanks

iChat Screen sharing does not as such for the screen bit use the Video/Audio port.
The Documentation was lacking last time I looked.
This one tells you the port changes in Leopard http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306688 compared to Tiger
Tiger is linked in the first to here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 where most of the other ports are.
However Screen sharing was not part of iChat 3.
If you do a Quick Look at the .plist(s) you will see the reference to ARD which is Apple Remote Desktop which is what the screen ending part is based on.
This Doc will tell you which ports ARD is likely to use
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106439
    (It says 5900 and 5988)
This should be allowed through the use of UPnP in your routing device or specifically opened.
Now the not so good news.
I run Little Snitch, A utility that tells you ports and IPs of incoming and outgoing network connections by any app you have.
This has told me that in fact the Screen port seems almost completely random normally in the 50000 range of ports
It may not be all you wnat to hear but I hope it helps.

  • How to disable 'select display' on screen sharing?

One improvement in Lion is Screen Sharings 'asking' of the current logged in user as to whether or not it is ok to share the screen.  While I understand the need for this in a multi-user environment, this is a unnecessary level of feature for most home users.  In fact, it's been a total pain and I'd like to know how to disable it.  Trying to remote support parents has become virtually impossible as they are unsure as to what it means to allow screen sharing when I attempt to connect.
Anyone know how to disable this feaute and let Screen Sharing work as it did pre-lion?

Apple menu > System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing > Allow access for: account you want to log into
    Connect as that user.

  • Screen Sharing (video resolution?)

I have tried Screen Sharing both to a bigger monitor and a smaller one. Sharing to a smaller monitor seems problematic because the mouse becomes hyper sensitive. It's near impossible controlling the mouse. Sharing to a bigger monitor the mouse works great, but the image is smaller and at times barely readable. I suspect this is a monitor-to-monitor resolution issue and am wondering if there is any work around or fix for this problem. Thank you.

    Hi,
In iChat Menu > Preferences > video section set the Bandwidth at both ends to 500kbps as a starting point.
You could go as low as 200kbps as Screen Sharing is supposed to come in lower than this.
The Open the Connection Doctor during a Chat (Video menu)
This will tell you the Bit rate from your end and the Buddy's
Move the Bandwidth up at one end and see when the Buffering settles to a new speed (bit rate)
Adjust one end at a time allowing for the Buffering to work until you have the highest setting you can at both ends with a decent pic.
iChat 3 and 4 was capped at 1.5 Mbps by the Quicktime Streaming setting (System Preferences > Quicktime).
This setting is not there in Snow Leopard and iChat 5 "sees" all your connection speed.
If you and your Buddy have vastly different Upload speeds (the deciding factor) there can be issues with the iChat Buffering.
This applies to Video chats as well as Data intensive Screen Sharing.

  • Screen sharing after abort

    Hi there,
I had to abort a screen sharing session without shutting down properly the session but by turning off my macbook. Since then, any new log-in is impossible from the macbook. The loginin window replies: wrong user name/password. But log-in from any other machine will allow for a screen sharing session to the mac mini snow leopard server. Is there anything still running which prevents me re-logging in?
    Thanks for help.
    L18

Hi L18, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • IChat Screen Sharing will not work when VNC will?

I am finding it impossible to get Screen Sharing working via iChat. I'm not surprised, as iChat seems extraordinarily balky at doing anything other than text chat. However, what confuses me most about this is that the Connection Doctor 'Capabilities' tab suggests that the net connection for my family members (1024/128) is "too slow" for Screen Sharing - yet I have been using OSX VNC for two years perfectly successfully to do so?
Does using Screen Sharing directly have the same limitations?

    Hi,
In System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming change the Speed to 1.5Mbps
This should change what iChat sees as being Capable off once you restart iChat.
The VNC app Screen Sharing that Opens form the Finder > Go > Go to Server VNC:// does not include a Audio component.
This uses less bandwidth than the iChat Screen Sharing which does include an Audio stream.
Also the Screen Sharing is done on a separate port to the Audio part and from testing seems to be a random choice.
For this reason we have been suggesting using UPnP in any modem or router to allow ports.
Apple have not said what ports it uses
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507?viewlocale=en_US Tiger A/V ports and Bonjour and Jabber
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282?viewlocale=en_US Leopard A/V ports (It should say but does not that you still need the Jabber and Bonjour ones if using them).
This doc http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2020?viewlocale=en_US says you need iChat to see at least a connection speed of 128K UP and Down for Screen Sharing.
It is known that iChat Screen Sharing is based on Apple Remote Desktop but it does not use the same ports (5900 and 5988).

  • Closed connection in stalled screen sharing and now does not work

Using screen sharing I created a second admin account on the computer 2. I enabled quick account switching and tried to switch user accounts to the new admin account. I linked the new admin account to be shared with my existing admin account on computer 1. The screen never switched over to my new admin account and I couldn't quit screen sharing so I closed the connection with computer 2. Now I can't share the screen with computer 2 at all, even using my original admin account (not the newly created one). I can't reboot my computers because it will abort jobs that need to remain running.
I can still share screens between computer 1 and other computers (i.e. not computer 2) but when I try to share with computer 2, it doesn't even ask me to log in.

This issue remains unresolved, but since Apple Discussions decided to archive my question it is impossible to receive any replies.

  • Screen sharing only in one way

Hi, I'm doing screen sharing everyday -mostly for helping other with their macs- with no problem but with one person (an uncle of mine).
He uses a new 20" iMac (the late one), we can text chat, videoconferencing, audioconferencing and screen sharing in one way, I can let him control my mac but it's impossible to let me control his Mac.
The fourth button in ichat (where to ask for permission or give permission to screen sharing) is half enable, only one of the options is enabled to click on, the option for "ask for screen sharing" isn't. So I can give him permission to control my mac but not to control his mac.
How can this be possible? I asume screen sharing works in the same protocols in both ways, above all when we can do video and audio conferencing.
Thanks in advance for your help

    Hi Ralph,
When you have ticked the screen sharing option in iChat>video>screen sharing and your buddy "high lights" (one click) your screen name the screen sharing icon will be displayed in black on his end indicating "enabled".
This way he can ask for your permission to share your screen.
When your contact has not ticked the screen sharing option the screen sharing icon in your contact list will be grey.
When your contact has ticked the screen sharing option as well the screen sharing icon in your contact list will be black as well.
Of course all other requirements for iChat screen sharing have to be met.
More important: I wish you a very happy new year!

  • Long delay in screen sharing

Has anyone else experienced very long delays in screen
sharing? My actions are taking at least 30 seconds to be shown to
participants and the connection to the Connect server regularly
breaks. It's made it impossible to give any presentations and has
been quicker to email screenshots through to people during a live
    presentation!
My Internet connection is fine with several speed test
websites showing at least 2.5Mbps dl and 384Kbps ul. Latency is
<1ms according to Connect. The local preview of the screenshare
is running about 10-15 seconds behind.
    Thanks,
    Gary.

Thanks Jorma. I've even gone down to 800x600 and it doesn't
make any difference at all. After trying for 2 weeks to get Adobe
to respond to a support call I made, someone from Adobe India tried
to help but they don't have access to the Adobe servers so weren't
able to run any diagnostic at the head end. So I'm stuck with a
white elephant after paying Adobe up front for a whole year. They
should at least offer me a refund.

  • Cancelling Screen Sharing over Bonjour does not work

I have a MacBook and an iMac on the same local network. Both are running updated OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
    Here's the situation:
    1. Let's say I'm at my MacBook and I want to see my iMac's screen. I open screen sharing.
    2. For whatever reason, I later am sitting at my iMac, and I see the screen sharing icon in the menu bar. I select it and tell it to disconnect.
    3. A few seconds later, the icon returns.
The same thing happens if the computers are reversed.
    Why is this?

This issue remains unresolved, but since Apple Discussions decided to archive my question it is impossible to receive any replies.
    GRR.

  • Screen sharing and multiple users

I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
    root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
    username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
    Was that clearer?
    Thanks again
    Ursus

  • Airport Extreme is allowing access to screen sharing, file sharing from external IP addresses (some from China, Canada etc)

How to get control over the ports/port forwarding etc in Airport Extreme?
How to make AE drop packets to certain ports from external ports.  Or create whitelist/blacklists?
I figured out where the MAC filtering is!  (It is inside the Timed Access Control).  I wish it had a list of connected device and allowed me to select, name and add them.
I am getting requests from Chinese IP to the screen sharing ports forwarded to my iMac.  Had requests to other ports as well.  There was one IP address from CANADA too.
I want to open file sharing for local use only.

Why is Airport Extreme forwarding requests for screen sharing from external ip addresses to my imac?  I don't have a public address, nor use dynamic dns service, and I have removed the server app (at least I think I have, but Apple Store doesn't think so).
