Screen sharing in 10.8 slower than in 10.7?

Hi everyone,
I use screen sharing a lot with my 10.7 server and 10.7 clients. I have now set up a fresh installation of 10.8 Server, but screen sharing to it seems way slower on the same connection. It takes around 10 seconds to connect (2-3 seconds with 10.7) and the speed (i.e. when dragging windows or typing) is slower, too.
Did you encounter similar issues?
Thanks
Björn

I have what I believe is the same issue. Used screen sharing to connect to my headless (no monitor) mac pro early 2008 running Lion from my early 2009 Mac Book Pro 17" also running Lion. I had them connection view internet sharing over an ethernet cable. There was no lag, I could eaisly use program and even watch video.
After upgrading both to Mountain Lion now screen sharing is usless. Apps are slow, mouse movements do not track well and forget about video, it doesn't even render.
I did notice something interesting, if i do connect a monitor to the headless mac pro the issues go away. Everything runs smooth like it used to headless on 10.7 until i disconnect the monitor, then back to slow town.
Any ideas? I'm getting close to reinstalling 10.7 as 8 is useless to me at this point.

  • Screen Sharing slows down dramatically after RDP upgrade from 2 to 3

For some reason once we upgraded from RDP 2 to RDP 3 our Screen Sharing has gotten increasingly slow. We are using it in a school environment where the teacher will share their screen with the students, and as we add more students to the share the sharing slows down to become unusable. This problem is intermittent (otherwise I would go though the logs and run a control test), and has only started upon upgrading to RDP 3. Anyone else experience this behavior? I believe we are all running 10.5.x on the OS side.

I also know someone that is having this issue; it was fine with the previous ARD version they were using in the computer lab, but after upgrading screen sharing have slowed down. It's not really that of an issue when its just one computer, but when they put all 30 computers the FPS drops down.
Keep in mind that they were not having the issues before upgrading. I've also been told that, currently, they got a 5 MB connection. I ran a network test and everything seemed fine (or more like I didn't know what was going to tell me that something was wrong, but all the numbers were very low).

  • Screen sharing slow

I'm using the "share screen" feature in the finder of Leopard on a Macbook Air to access a Mac mini running 10.4.11. Though it works quite well, the screen refresh is a bit slower than I would like.
Does anyone have any ideas regarding what might improve this . . . such as more memory in the mini, a faster intel processor than offered in the Air (Air is 1.6 ghz; a macbook would be 2.4ghz), upgrade the wireless network to 802.11/n from 802.11/g, lower the screen resolution on the mini (currently 1680x1050) . . . all of the above . . . none of the above . . . any ideas?

  • Leopard Screen Sharing (VNC) Quality?

Before Leopard I used to use Vine VNC Server for accessing my Mac over the internet. Now that Leopard has its own VNC (Screen Sharing) server built in theres no need to use it.
Normally when I VNC'ed to my Mac over the internet using UltraVNC on Windows it would automatically select the best image compression/quality (eg only displaying 256 colors only etc) to make it much quicker over the internet.
But the new Leopard VNC server only seems to allow full quality screen sharing, which is painfully slow over the internet (esp as my macs running at 1600x1500!), selecting anything other than Auto in UltraVNC will instantly disconnect after entering my VNC password.
Does Leopard's VNC (Screen Sharing) support compression/image quality like Vine VNC? If so how do you enable it?
    Thanks for any help!

Thats what I thought as well, the "Allow control" option in ARD admin prefs is off. When ARD admin is not launched VNC to the computer works fine. If ARD admin is opened I can no longer VNC to it. Its like the "Allow control" pref doesn't actually do anything & instead is forced on always

  • IPhone 3G operations slower than iPhone 1

While I am browsing the website disappears frequently and the phone goes back to the home screen. Things are also slower than with the iPhone 1. Everything is slower: downloading email, etc. I have synced it recently. iPhone

it's either ATT or Apple and not just your phone. alot of us have the same problem. i'll suggest the same thing i've said to someone else...
if they haven't fixed this by your next billing cycle... tell them they can deduct the $30 data cost from your bill until they've resolved it or you're not paying.
Apple and ATT are making a killing on these phones, and they will try to avoid reembursing for services they are not providing. let them know that if they want to see $$$ they need to provides the services listed under the contract.

  • Screen sharing woes

I am having trouble screen sharing with my mother inlaw who needs help alot. She has a newer imac from around the middle of 2009. When i try to connect it almost does, I hear her and then it for some unknow reason it says You were disconnected from screen sharing, an unknown connection error occurred.

    Hi,
    Do these things first.
In iChat at both ends go to iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section and set the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps
Screen Sharing works at lower speeds than this but this will stop any issues if your internet Speed as vastly different.
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall if the Firewall is ON go to the Advanced Button.
In here make sure Stealth is Not selected and the Signed Apps are allowed and then make sure iChat is in the List.
Lastly and the most likely is the ports ichat uses through your routing devices.
iChat in iChat 4 and 5 uses 20 ports if you do Bonjour, Jabber and AIM based Buddy lists and A/V chats.
19 of these are published by Apple.
The 20th is used for the Screen Sharing side of a Screen Sharing session (It has an Audio Chat running alongside)
If you can here her for a sec it would not appear to be the Audio side that is an issue.
    This 20th port is random.
This means it cannot be set up in a Modem or router that does Port Forwarding to open the ports.
If your routing devices at either end can do UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) then use that.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • File sharing on a MacMini with Snow Leopard Server slower than on a G4

We've decided to replace our old file server, a G4 2x450 (running Mac OS 10.4.11 (client!) with 640 MB of RAM) by a MacMini Server, running Mac OS X Server 10.6.2.
The Mini runs the OS out of the box (I re-installed it to avoid mis-configurations). What's frustrating is that the Mini is slower than the G4.
Attached to the Mini is a RAID 0 MacPower Taurus with 2x1,5 TB SATA drives. The G4 is sharing a 650 GB P-ATA RAiD 1 internally attached via a 64bit ACARD.
While the G4 receives about 32-35 MB/s over the network (using a 5GB file for the test), the MiniServer doesn't exceed 25 MB/s.
A local copy of the same file isn't much faster on the G4, but on the Mini the copying speed is more than 70 MB/s. So. on the Mini copies over the network are only little more than 1/3 of the local copy speed!
So the problem is not the speed of the drives, the speed of the network - it's the data transfer from the network interface of the Mini to the FireWire interface.
The network is well configured, using a HP ProCurve 1810 managed gigabit switch. Both servers were tested under same conditions in the same network.
I would appreciate any help or idea?

    I have the same experience.
But did you try to write to the local MacMini drive or to the Fire attached Raid?
I found, that my internal MacMini drives are fast over the network, but as soon as it comes to Firewire drives on the MacMini over the network, it's only half speed.

  • Firefox 4.0 freezes, crashes, closes, changes screens, does not respond, and runs 8X SLOWER than 3.6.

Firefox 4.0 is the WORST browser I have ever seen. It freezes, crashes, closes, changes screens, does not respond, and runs 8X SLOWER than 3.6. Tasks I used to do in 30 minutes, now takes me 40 minutes or more. I went back to 3.6 and immediately had a tremendous improvement.
Mozilla needs to get rid of this load of lies about a new crap program, and go back to the 3.6 version. Version 4.0 is WORST than any other program I have ever seen.

The slow / hesitant scrolling problem seems to be an artifact of the database Firefox uses to keep track of where you go, what you do, etc. It uses sqlite databases which get fragmented over time.
    There are several fixes:
Some are add-ons and work internally, such as Vacuum Places (search the addons for it).
Some are external. Speedyfox is one I just tried, and found to work quite well. I think it did a better job than Vacuum Places, but requires Firefox to be shut down before it can work properly.
Find Speedyfox using a web search.

  • Slow/lagging performance while screen sharing in OS X.

I am running two "headless" '09 Mac Mini. I control them with Screen Sharing in OS X from my MacBook 2.1ghz & MacBook Air 1.6ghz. After 10.5.7, screen sharing is very slow in response. This is the same for all my Macs, not just the Mini. My wireless bandwidth is 14 mbps down & 8 mbps up so it is not my network connection. Please look into this.
    Thank you,
    Mike

    Please look into this.
This forum is for the exchange of information between Mac OS X customers. It is NOT a communications channel to Apple.
If you want to report this to Apple, then use one of the following methods:
    <http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>
<http://bugreporter.apple.com> Free ADC account needed for BugReporter
If you want fellow customers to take a stab at diagnosing this, please provide some additional information.
How are the systems connected? Ethernet, WiFi, over the internet (some or all of the above may apply)? A simple diagram such as
modem -- ethernet --> wifi base station
wifi base station -- 802.11n -> MacBook Air
wifi base station -- ethernet -> Mac mini A
    wifi base station -- 802.11g -> Mac mini B
    would be useful.
If over the internet, what method do you use to establish a remote connection, and did you have to make any special configuration setups to allow that connection?
If WiFi, is it 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n. If 802.11n is 'n' working in the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz frequences (it matters).
If using the 2.4GHz frequences (802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n in 2.4GHz mode) can all be affected by interference from neighbor's WiFi equipment using the same channel, 2.4GHz cordless phones, 2.4GHz baby monitors, microwave ovens (I'll discount the microwave oven unless you cook 24/7).
You can check on the neighbor's WiFi channel using with a utility such as
    AP Grapher
    iStumbler
    KisMac
    AirRadar
You should be able to find any of these utilities at
    <http://versiontracker.com>
    <http://macupdate.com>
What Mac OS X 10.5.7 installed on ALL the systems, or just the MacBook Air?
Besides upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.7, have you made any other equipment changes (new router, new ethernet switch, moved equipment to a new location, played with any router configuration settings, etc...).
Actually some of this information would useful to Apple as well, if you should choose to report it to Apple.

  • Ichat screen sharing - "slow network"

    Hi
I am trying to use screen sharing between an intel imac and a mac book pro over the internet. Both running latest versions of Leopard. The enable screen sharing menu item is greyed out. Connection doctor has a red cross next to "share my screen" with the message "(slow network)". Same for host multiperson video. Share remote screen has a green tick.
I have enable upnp on my router as recommended elsewhere. No change. Similarly, I have also set Quick Time streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps. No change.
I have tested by internet speeds at www.auditmypc.com:
    download: 9782Kbps
    upload: 526.4 Kbps
Is the upload speed causing the problem? Any tips on how to fix this pls (Virgin Media cable broadband)?
    Thanks

QT is still on 1.5Mps, which I had set before trying the tips suggested here. iChat video still has the 500Kbps setting I gave it as advised.
Oddly, screen sharing is now available even though I am back on wireless not ethernet. This all seems a bit unpredictable and unreliable for something which is supposed to be 'easy' screen sharing!
Thanks again for the help people have given which has (hopefully) fixed this.

  • Messages Screen Sharing is super slow

So, in Yosemite, Apple introduced native screen sharing. I used to do screen sharing via AOL IM in Messages, but have now been trying Apple's native version. It is, however, painful slow. Especially when compared to using AOL IM. Is anyone else having this issue? Have you found a way to speed it up?
Also, when using native screen sharing, the person requesting the screen share is introduced using their [email protected] user account. For users like me who use the (much) older @mac.com handle, is there a way to have Messages identify you as such, instead of using the @iCloud.com handle?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Screen Sharing is very slow

I use my Mac Pro to do maintenance on my Mini in the home theater using Screen Sharing. This worked great with Leopard, fast and smooth. I've now upgraded both to Snow Leopard and it has become extremely slow. Moving windows is glacially slow, for example. There is often a several second lag between a button press and resulting action. I haven't found any discussion about such a condition and don't know what to look for. Can anyone help me? Thanks.
