Screen Sharing Key Mappings:  Expose and Command-Tab?

I am using Screen Sharing successfully and loving it - except that command keys work on my local machine instead of the remote machine. How do I get the Expose keys, like F9 and F10, and/or the Command-Tab keys to work on the remote machine?
Help?

I never received an answer to this. I'm marking it as 'answered' only to close it out.

  • Screen sharing and "command tab"

    Hi,
is there a way to "command tab" within a Screen sharing screen.
When I use "command tab", it's doing this on the host, and not on the remote machine...
Or is there another way to jump from application to application?
    Cheers,
    Roger

Use this third party application: http://osx.iusethis.com/app/teleport

  • How to make a backup of your stuff? and Command+tab question

First of all, is there an alternative to using a different Command+tab button? OR the F3 button to switch between windows? A lot of times I have more than ONE safari window open and I want to Command tab but Command+tab won't show the OTHER safari sites open. I use the F3 button also but is there another way to ALT+tab to DIFFERENT safari/firefox windows like on the Windows OS?
I was just wondering if IN TIME, Mac's will start running slower (like PC's) as you put more programs in. I know from experience, even by just staying on trusted sites, in about 2+ years your windows vista/7 will be a little slower. How do I reformat a Mac (factory reset) and besides backing everything up on a DVD, is there a way to backup my files?
Sorry for these nub questions, I only had this for like a month xD

    Welcome to the Mac world!
Mac OS let's you fully customize the keystrokes which you can quickly move between the windows you want. You will find these settings under System Preferences and Expose & Spaces under the personal area.
When you are in here, you can assign a different keys, or secondary key, to active the show all windows (what you are currently using as F3). Under the All Windows selection, you will see the default set to F3. Here you can change it if you would like, say assigning the right or left shift key to open the show all windows feature. In the box to the right which should be empty, you can even assign extra mouse keys (assuming you use an external mouse) to do the exact same thing, which I find makes your work-flow much easier. Play around with the mouse settings to get what you like (I use my mouse to show all windows when I press the scroll wheel). Hopefully this will be a sufficient solution to your needs. Have a look here for more keyboard shortcuts: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343
Regarding your second question, you will find that Mac's do not fall failure to the typical 'OS rot' that you see when using Windows in just a short year or two. The same goes for keeping your computer on for long periods. Where Windows will be noticeably sluggish after even a day or two of continuous use, Mac's can have an uptime of weeks without a drop in performance (a buddy of mine usually only restarts once a month unless the power flashes). You will likely only need to re-install the OS if something happens to the computer and it no longer functions properly. In this case, I recommend using Apple's build in Time Machine application (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427) however you will require an external hard drive. Time Machine takes a backup of your computer whenever you ask it and if you have to re-install the OS, it will restore everything to it's previous state.
    Hope this helps!

  • Dock and command tab function

my dock mysteriously has disappeared and will not show up on the bottom of my screen. my command tab function to move between applications does not work either. i just installed the latest update for mac os but it hasn't fixed the problem. any advice?

Start by running the two basic checks provided by Disk Utility's "First Aid" tab to make sure the file system & system permissions are OK. (You can ignore SUID warnings in the permissions check.)
If that doesn't turn up anything, try creating a new user account for testing purposes. If the problem goes away in the new account on its first login, it implies some user preference file is corrupted or an incompatible or corrupted login item is present in your normal account.
If that turns up nothing, try Mac OS X: starting up in Safe Mode, then log into your normal account. If the problem disappears it implies something mentioned here is or was the culprit. (Some problems are fixed by a safe boot, others require more work.)
If any of these steps reveals a problem, don't go to the next one until it is resolved. If you need more help determining what to do about any revealed problem, please post a description of it & list any steps you have already taken that had no effect. If you can resolve the problem, please post a description of what you did as well. (Others will benefit from your experience, good or bad.)

  • Screen Sharing between Snow Leopard and Leopard not working

I have Leopard on my old G5 Tower and just put Snow on my Intel Mini now Screen Sharing no longer works, file sharing works my network drives chatter back and forth with no problems I just can't get a Screen Share connection. On the G5 I put in the mini's location the "communicating" barber pole churns away for about 2mins then comes back with "Connection failed. Please make sure that Screen Sharing is enabled on the computer..... Also make sure your network connection is working properly. On the Mini Screen Sharing either crashes on launch or when it does launch does the same thing as the G5. Screen Sharing is on on both machines. I was using it just mins. before installing Snow on the Mini. I did install the remote desktop update from Apple on the Mini, it seems to be for Snow only as the update isn't mentioned on Software Update on the Leopard G5. So I'm thinking of going back to Leopard on the Mini, can I do it by just doing a "restore" from Time Machine or should I dig out the old install disk?
Am I the only one out there with this problem?
Netgear router on wired Gigabit Ethernet Network, several Firewire drives, and Network Storage drives.

The G5 is running 10.5.8 with all the updates. Screen sharing on the Mini 9 times out of 10 crashes on launch when it does load the computer list shows but none on it can be selected and connected to as before. When I put the G5's name in and try to connect I get the same cannot connect make sure sharing is on message I get on the G5 trying to connect to the Mini. I have tried making new network settings and rebooting that didn't work. File sharing works works fine all network drives show up. This and Front Row being now slow jerky and audio being out of sync (I've seen this complaint else where on this forum) are the only problems I've found. But these two are just enough to send me back to Leopard on the Mini. It is my media server. I don't use iChat but I did check to see if Screen Sharing is on after it finally opened, crashed over and over, I see that it was enabled there as well. My network is wired not airport, I only use wifi for my iPod Touch.

  • Screen Sharing issues with ML and SL  with dual displays??

Don't know if this is a ML issue or was present in Lion (which I never upgraded to)
    Setup...
Old setup was 2010ish MBP and only 2006 iMac.  Both with SL 10.6.8 and both have two monitors...no issues.
Upgraded to ML on the MBP on release.  Realtively painless process.  I tried screen sharing today and I get odd responses with the MBP to the iMac.  Just so everyone knows, screen 1 is the main iMac screen and screen 2 is the additional monitor.  When showing both screens I could see all screen realestate.  However, when I changed to only display screen 1 I started having issues.  I couldn't get the entire screen to fit within the window nor scroll to show areas not displayed.  Sometimes switching between fit in window and no fit, I would get a blank screen.  Screen 2 only displayed and all is fine.  I noticed on screen 1 that there was a little black bar or open space on the bottom of the window that was exactly the same size that was missing from the top.  No ability to fit or scroll would allow the black space to move so that the menu bar on the top of the main monitor would display.
After doing a bit of searching with no luck and scratching my head, I took a look at the Arrangement screen in the display settings.  Wouldn't you know it that the main screen (having a smaller resolution than screen 2) was aligned so that the top of each display was even with each other leaving a small space on the bottom of screen 1 compared to screen 2.  When I moved screen 1 in the arrangement screen to a more drastic alignment to verify this was the problem...screen sharing crashed when going from both screens to only display screen 1.  Tried screen sharing again going from two displays to one, crashed again.
It appears there is some sort of bug or maybe ML and SL screen sharing doesn't like each other when the remote computer has two monitors.
Submitting bug report to Apple but was curious if anyone else has seen this or knows a work around.
    Mike

I have a similar configuration (Lion 2011 MBP and SL 2009 iMac w/ second display). After installing the recent Remote Desktop update things went awry when trying to share the iMac SL displays with the MPB Lion.
The displays on the iMac are the same resolution, however the second display physically sits a bit lower than the iMac display, so I had adjusted the arrangement to compensate the different heights. The second display is located physically to the left of the iMac display, but that shouldn't have any effect as far as I'm concerned. Screen sharing had worked in this config until the recent Remote Desktop update (on Lion).
I thought about what you mentioned about the display screen arrangement, so I decided to just test it for myself, arranging both displays side-by-side on the displays arrangement control panel. Surprisingly, it worked!
I do consider the Remote Desktop update to be the culprit and there must be some bug associated with that. I'm getting ready to submit a bug report, so hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

  • Black Screen, but Could See Expose and Desktop

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to talk about this, but I have been having some strange things happen to my Macbook Pro 13.
Last night, I was watching a show on my computer and all of sudden the fans started to run loudly. Next thing I know, the screen turns black, but I am still able to launch expose and see my desktop. However, when I went into expose the windows would multiply. I tried shutting down the computer, but Microsoft Word wouldn't quit, and I couldn't reach the force quit button and didn't know the shortcut. I kind of thought that perhaps the computer could have overheated, since my Mac was sitting on my bed and the vents must have bee blocked, but I called Apple this morning and I told them the situation and they thought that it was really weird that that happened. However, they told me how to force quit through a shortcut and low and behold, everything returned to normal.
The representative said that it could be something to deal with my software or possibly a hardware issue. But what I'd like to know is has anyone had something similar like this happen to them before? Or do you have any inclination as to what may have caused this? Its starting to bother me, because Macs are supposed to "just work" and mine which is six months old is starting to cause some problems. Additionally, I had to call Apple two days ago because my screen had turned blue after I was forced to restart my computer due to a freeze. I'm starting to get frustrated!
Thanks for all your comments and advice in advance!

Below is what my console said, I don't really know what these sentences mean.

  • Screen Sharing between Mountain Lion and Tiger not working

rMBP running 10.8.2 ML and a G3 iMac running 10.4.11 Tiger.
When I try and use Screen Sharing on the MBP to connect to the G3 it prompts for both a username and password. I enter a valid user and pw but it fails with
    Authenication failed to "Ruby".
Please verify you have entered the correct name and password.
Third-party VNC clients, e.g. JollysFastVNC on my MBP and Remoter on my iPhone, can connect fine, but they only request a password.
    Any ideas?

I've been using Screen Share on my home network for a very long time.  My most used computer, MacBook Pro (2011) was just upgraded to ML, my desktop still has Lion on it - and can't be upgraded because it is an early MacPro.  I was having intermittant problems getting the MBPro to connect to the MPro screen, and resetting the PRAM was correcting it (but it could have been the rebooting process alone - I don't know).  Now I can share the MPro disks on my network but not the screen.  Now, to me, that's wierd.  I've tried doing all kinds of setting checks, preference removal, etc.  No luck.  I can, however (as someone above mentioned) connect from my MPro (Lion) to my MBPro (ML) screen.  I've checked my Intego VirusBarrier X6 settings, i.e. blocked addresses (in the past that has happened and blocked) and I've even entered my MBPro address into the approved address section.  I've checked/rechecked the Sharing Preferences, turned them on/off, etc.  All to no avail.
Is this a Mountain Lion / Lion issue, a Mountain Lion issue, or something somewhere corrupt?  I used to have Remote Desktop on the MPro, but for my needs Screen Share & Disk Share suit my needs on my home network.  I have LogMeInIgnition, which when the last time I tried to connect to the MBPro it showed it offline - and it isn't.  I feel there's something in ML blocking things.
I'm open to suggestions, and a fix if needed.  This is frustrating.  Not that I can't use the exercise to walk to the room where the MPro is - not the point.

  • Screen sharing/splitting PC laptop and 2012 IMac. How?

    Hi
I'm a newcomer to the Apple community, having just bought a 23 inch 2012 IMac. I have a year old Dell work laptop which i'd like to share|split screen with as I do with my work monitor, i.e. benefit from using two screens at home as I do at work. How is this possible, if at all?
    Many thanks
    Richard

You cannot do that, what you're referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple explains this in Target Display Mode 2011 & Later iMacs. The Dell simply doesn't have the technology available to make it possible. BTW there is no such thing as a 23" 2012 iMac, there is a 21.5" and 27" models though. I suspect you may have a 21.5" model.

  • My 3rd generation ipod touch is acting like it has a ghost.  when it is sitting there the screen flips between pages, letters and commands are input on their own.

All of a sudden, my iPod Touch has developed a mind of its own.  When it is on, but I am not actively manipulating it, it acts like I have swiped the screen or entered characters on the keyboard, or activated an app.  It is as if the screen is picking up capacitive input but my fingers aren't touching it.  It happens in all apps or just on the home screen, whether I'm holding the iPod or it is just sitting on a table.  I have turned it off, restored the software, but the problem seems to be getting worse.

I use my Ipod Touch all the time for work I am a struggling truck driver and Thursday 4-28-11 my ipod started doing this I cant even listen to music on it I am 8 hours from an Apple store so that is not an option for me its like its going in to apps and has actually sent emails it types and just does what it wants to do my wife bought this for me as a gift last FEb(2/2010) so it is not even under warranty anymore I don't know what to do i have tried restoreing it 2 or 3 times if anyone can please help me

  • Asking for permission when screen sharing between MBP and Mini?

    Hi Guys,
Like many others I have a mini connected to the TV, and use that as my media center, all music, movie, pictures, etc. is shown thrue the mini.
After upgrading to Lion I cannot use screen sharing as before, where I just connected to the mini, and voila I had the full control. Now it seems I have to accept the screen sharing request!?!? Is there a way around this, I surely hope so, because otherwise it will defeat the purpose of my mini! I mean, I have no mouse or keyboard attached to it obviously!
I hope there is an answer to this
    Best regards
    Viktor

    Viktorrrrr,
It appears that Screen Sharing is a bit "buggy" in this first release of Lion.
Having said that, I have managed to get mine working and it is possible to have screen sharing without the approval prompt - the key is that you need to connect using the same account that is already logged on at the machine you're connecting to. So, in your case, after you click "Share Screen..." on your MBP, you should enter the account name and password that matches the account currently logged on your Mac Mini.
This should be fine if the account currently logged on your Mac Mini is allowed to do Screen Sharing (see the list of users in the "Allow access for:" section of the "Sharing--->Screen Sharing" system prefs).
If this works for you, stop reading here!
However, if (like me) you log on locally to your Mac Mini with a Standard account, but only allow Administrators to connect to the Mac Mini via Screen Sharing, then you have some extra work to do because, as you know, when you connect via Screen Sharing with one account in order to view the screen of another logged-on account on the Mac Mini, you get the prompt asking for permission. There does not appear to be an option to switch off this behaviour and, I suspect, this behaviour will remain due to privacy/security issues. So, if you want to avoid this prompt, you are going to have to log in using the same account. And to do this, you will need to allow this account to Screen Share.
The quick way to enable this would be to choose the option to "Allow access for: All users" on your Mac Mini - this would then allow your account (and ALL others!) to connect via Screen Sharing. But you really don't want to enable this if you can help it. Much better, would be to create a new local group on your Mac Mini called something like "Screen Share" and populate this group with all the accounts you want to be allowed to connect via Screen Sharing.
To create and populate a new group:-
Go to the "Users & Groups" system pref and click the + below the list of users to bring up the "New Account" window. Where you see the pull-down menu that says "Standard", click on this and select "Group". Enter your new group name and click "Create Group". The new group will be created and you can then select the accounts you want to include in this group (ie. the accounts you want to allow to connect via Screen Sharing) in the "Membership" section - just tick the boxes of the ones you want.
Now go back to the "Sharing-->Screen Sharing" system pref. Where it says "Allow access for:", click the "Only these users:". Now click the + below the list to bring up a window of all users. Make sure "Users & Groups" is selected in the left pane, then click on your newly-created group in the right pane and click "Select".
Sadly, this is where the real bugs seem to be!! When I try to permission my group for access, more often than not, my selected group is not added to the list of allowed access. I have played with this for hours, clicking various options in various sequences, but have not found a pattern. Even when my selected group does get added successfully, I sometimes find access is still not granted to that group and its members!!
I'm afraid it seems to be trial and error at the moment - I guess a fix will come eventually, but for now you just need to keep adding the group, removing it, turning Screen Sharing on then off then on again, try adding again...etc! I CAN tell you that I did eventually get my group to stick and work as intended, so it is possible...but it will take time!
Sorry for the lengthy response. Good luck!

  • Command   tab - app windows not at the forefront

I used to be able to speed through my apps, but now for some reason when I switch to another application, I have to click on the window in order to make it active (i.e. if I copy something from safari and command+tab to word to paste it, I can't just immediately follow it with the paste key combo).  I don't know when this started up, but I think it may have been with the latest mountain lion update.  Anyone else having this issue? Is there some setting I don't have setup right?

  • Show clear text pre shared key asa 5500.....

I have read several of the posts on how to show your pre shared keys in clear text.  I am in the process of converting a 5520 over to a 5525-x and I got to the point where I need the pre-shared keys
the    more system:running-config     command does NOT show the clear text of the keys nor does access the file via https:// either.
the 5520 is running Software Version 8.4(2)18
any thoughts how I can wrestle this info out of the asa as I'm not getting anywhere with what seems to have worked for a few others.
    Thank in advance
    Sincerely
    Paul

The command  more system:run  should show you those keys.
Couple things that I have seen
I have seen it where someone configured pre-shared key by cutting and pasting the key as it is shown when you do a show run, so it was entered as ****. You can check this buy entering a dummy config with a key and then run the more system:run and see if it shows up.
also check the privilege level of your login and make sure it is 15.

  • Screen Sharing viewing problem

I am using Skype Version 4.3.0.37 on a desktop using Ubuntu 12.04. Using Screen Sharing in full screen mode there are huge blocks of filler surrounding the screen sharing image making the screen sharing image much smaller and much harder to read. Is there a solution? Is anyone working on the problem? It seems as if linux problems are ignored.

Here's a couple things you can try:
Cntl-Shift-Eject will put the displays into sleep mode. Then space bar will bring them back out of sleep. See if that results in a screen on the Sony. If not, then try this one:
Hit the power button on the MB. This will pop a screen up (which you can't see because the Sony is black) but if you hit the S key, the MB will go into sleep mode. After it goes to sleep, hit space bar to awaken the MB and see if the screen comes back on the Sony.

  • Turning on Screen Sharing Remotely

In an effort to try to get Back to My Mac working, I read I had to turn off Remote Management and instead use Screen Sharing. I'm traveling right now, so in a completely boneheaded move, I used VNC to turn off Remote Management and wouldn't you know it - it's instantaneous. It knocked me off VNC so I couldn't turn on Screen Sharing. Is there any way to turn Screen Sharing on through the terminal command line? Or even turn VNCserver on temporarily so I can do this through the GUI?

Also, before copying files to server make sure ARD is turned off and will not start at boot:
    (From running '/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ kickstart -help')
    - Stop the Remote Management service and deactivate it so it will not start after the next computer restart.
    */System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -deactivate -stop*
