Screen sharing new iMac on Airport Network

I have a Macbook Pro and an iMac on an Airport network.
I don't see the option to share the desktop of the remote iMac, even though I have screen sharing on. I can do screen sharing if I manually connect via the Connect to Server option in Finder and use vnc://ipaddress. I just don't see the button like you are supposed to when I click on that computer in the finder.
Finally, another odd thing. On the macbook pro, the iMac is first displayed in the shared pane in the finder like a Windows PC. Then, once I use afp to connect to it and access the Shared folder, then it shows up in the Finder as an iMac. The Windows version is still there too.
Thanks!

Hi Palessi:
I had the same problem. The thing in my case was that I have a Tiger (10.4.11) G5 that I wanted to control with my Leopard (10.5.5) MacPro.
I have the Following settings:
Leopard MacPro:
System Preferences/Sharing-----Selected: Screen Sharing, File Sharing and Reomote Login.
System Preferences/Security/Firewall-----Set Access for specific services and applications.
Tiger G5:
System Preferences/Sharing/Services-----Selected: Personal File Sharing,, Window Sharing, FTP Access, Apple Remote Desktop.
System Preferences/Security/Firewall-----Selected: iChat Bonjour.
With this configuration I had to stop the firewall to get control over the Tiger G5 with the Leopard MacPro until I did the next thing:
1: Go to System Preferences/Security/Firewall
2: Click on the "NEW" button
3: In the pop screen in the "PORT NAME" section, scroll down untill you find "VNC" and leave settings as they are.
Thats it. I have to say that until I did that, I could have access to files through my network, I even had the share screen button in the finder.
I hope this helps

  • Migrate from minimac (G4) to new iMac via airport extreme

I have a brand new iMac and I have the latest airport extreme.
I have my old miniMac and all are linked up through the Airport Extreme.
I want to transfer all of my old files from my G4 miniMac to my new iMac but the Migration Assistant says I have to use (buy) a firewire cable.
How do I transfer my files from my old computer (miniMac) to the new iMac via airport extreme?

sorry to say but its the firewire technique which Migration Asst. uses. It does not migrate over Ethernet.. its actually very simple...
you put your G4 into target disk mode. You put the iMac into migration asst., attach the cable and the migration (file copying) begins after you chose to proceed.
The reality is firewire is faster than most standard ethernet anyway... and wireless? it would take an extraordinary amount of time.

  • IMac screen sharing automatically in dock over network

I am running 10.10.2 in an iMac Late 2013.
My mail and safari seem to be automatically screen sharing with other iMacs in my office. They get a little secondary dock that lives on the left of the normal dock. I've attached a screen shot of the scenario. All the computers in the office are logged on to the same iCloud account and are all connected to the same network. How can I turn this function off?

    Hi Versatile Studios,
Based on your post it seems you would like to turn of the Continuity feature called Handoff. This allows you to continue your work on another device. I have linked to an article which provides more information about the feature, and how to deactivate it:
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support
    Turn off Handoff
To turn off Handoff on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps, and turn off Handoff.
On your Mac, go to System Preferences > General and uncheck the Allow Handoff setting.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • PC laptop connects to Imac's airport network, but can't browse internet

    Hi there,
I've got a new early 2008 iMac with inbuilt Airport and I'm trying to use the in-built airport to create a wireless network with my windows based PC laptop.
Before getting the iMac this year I had an old 2000 eMac and a Netgear router that I used to connect my PC to the internet wirelessly. It worked perfectly after I set it all up using the Router login page.
But now using the in-built Airport, the PC can go as far as connecting to the iMac's internet connection, but whenever I try to view a page on Firefox or IE, I get an "address not found" page. And yes, I've got my Firefox's network connection settings set to "auto-detect proxy settings for this network".
Is there something wrong with my Airport, or are there some fundamental setup steps I need to go through in setting up the network?
This is what I did to set up my Airport network: I chose Create Network from the Airport pulldown menu, then gave it a name, with the channel set to Automatic (11). I've chosen a 5 ascii character WEP password. Then when I connect on my PC laptop for the first time, it sees the SSID, then asks for the network key. I enter it, it spends about 3 minutes trying connect to the iMac, and finally it says Connected, with a signal strength of excellent.
This is all well and good, but as I said, as soon as I try to access the internet, it fails with a broken page. Even though it says "connected" as the wireless status.
The same happens when I set up a new network using this time a 13 ascii character WEP password.
Is it in fact possible to connect to the in-built Airport using a PC, or do I need to get a new external router. Seems a bit of a waste...
    Any help much appreciated!
    Lachlan

Hi Duane, thanks for your reply.
I did as you said. I opened Sharing preferences, selected share your connection from Ethernet to computers using Airport. I then set up a new network with new WEP password, but unfortunately my PC won't connect at all to it. After I hit the connect button, it tries for a while, then I get the message "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network..."
Is it because I've said to connect to computers using Airport? Only one computer's got airport and that is the iMac that I'm trying to connect the PC to.
A reply above says I still need a router - is that the case? I thought the iMac's built in Airport effectively acts as a router.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • New imac 21, airport card anomalies...

    hello everybody
just to inform, as here apple ssupport  didn't ptopose such "simple`" solution  to a kind of network misconfiguration , bad access to web services, aso
    1) after a few s=days, a brand new imac 2.5 g intel core i5 was not connecting to te router correctly.
    2) when calling  apple support, describing the airport icon showing @no airport card connected@,(even if the system info[locations showed a card and even the  modem data on screen..) so  i had to pack tje machine and travel to such apple center downtown, Polanco, and here in Mexico it's a real pleasure to  ride some 2 hours in eavy traffic..
    3) arriving there, no airport card problem, and the technician described me a probable motherboard saturation or even overheating situation, i said ok, will go home and see if everything keeps working fine.
    4) a few days later, again, no access to web, automatic or personalized network or account adjustments seem fine.. but no way to receive or send mail, web pages crazyly slow, aso...
    5) when  24 hours later no way to  see nothing, even  the airport icon with stripes shows just clear empty grayish icon..
    6) calling again ther apple service center, again they  ask me to carry the stuff downtown, must be or could be probably a configuration problem, need to be checked there, aso, no way to look for or propose some solution just by calling them aso.
    7) calling ip service, we tried for more than an hour to check , trying all options, f.i. using ethernet cable (modem always good,  and machine working fine then) we examined all options, accounts configuration, the automatic was not accepting a connection, system showing "Airport connected but no ip address because not attributed, or missing", aso)
    8) and  when changing from automatic locatoon to the configuration  we had installed weeks before to help solve the connection problem , same result.
the directions of ip, router subnet mask aso were correct, changed eventually, no way, nothing was connecting.,  we tried quitiing such non automatic configuration to avoid possible conflicts, no results.
    9) after an hour or so, the technician from my IP offered to quit the airport configuration (even with a green bulb visible that  airport  config was not connecting, the desktop icon was  sometimes greyish, sometimes empty, aso...)  and add a new one.
    10) at the moment  it was created (as "airport 2") ... the automatic configuration looked instantly for another ip adress, and everything works fine now..
SOSO why doesn[t apple support technicians have suchj ideas ? why did  the airport icon even show a "not connected{ airport card message ?
I phoned  those apple guys around, explained them the solution offerde by phone by the IOP provider, no comment, answer or even a simpe "thanks" for  such suggestion , from them,  whan the received such info, Hopefully will eb useful  for others users, and eventually after a post here. tschuss
    Form Mexico city...

Looks like this issue has hit its fair share of people. Spoke to Apple support today about the same issue. Brand new iMac 27' 2.8 quad core with 8gb of ram and I opened the box only to find my airport card was not recognized by OSX. After performing several support steps, the staff let me know that this was indeed a hardware related issue - I am not advocating this is everyone'e issue just mine.
Here is what we did to troubleshoot and determine it was hardware related.
Open system profiler / go to network and look at airport - if all you see is "software versions" your hardware is not recognized. You will need to reboot the system and clear the SMC. To do this do the following:
Unplug everything from your iMac and wait 60 seconds with absolutely nothing connected to it. After that, plug in your power cable and press the power button down, letting it go after 2 seconds. Immediately after the power button is let go - hold down option + apple + p + r you will hear 2 "bong" sounds, then let go of the keys and boot. If your hardware does not show up you will need to boot to the OSX install DVD to get a "clean" install of OSX.
    Boot to OSX DVD
    Insert DVD
    Shut down system
Power on system - hold down C key until you hear a chime then let go. System will boot to OSX install.
Once you pass all the prompts by selecting defaults, you will come to "Install MAC OSX" asking you to select the disk where you want to install. DO NOT CLICK INSTALL. Open Utilities / System profiler. If you still do not see anything under Airport other than software, your Airport card is bad or at the very least not showing up in the OS. If you do see the airport card there, you will need to reinstall the OS to have it recognize the card.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can you use screen sharing outside of your local network?

I've been poking around with the "screen sharing" in osx Lion. I have a few questions about it.
Firstly, is the built-in screen sharing only accessible through the finder?
Also, is it only available on local networks? I've gotten it to work on two computers on the same network. But, can I use in the built-in screen sharing to look at my work iMac while I'm at home on my Macbook? Or would I need a full VPN client to do this? (Although isn't there built-in VPN compatibility in Lion?)
    Thanks!

  • Brand new iMac loosing Airport! Very dissapointed!!!

    Hi,
I have a brand new iMac 21.5". The first time I used it, it said there was no Airport installed. I phoned apple support and they told me to flash the pram. After that it found the Airport card.
Now it has lost it again and flashing the pram does nothing. This is very dissappointng - its BRAND NEW I haven't changed anything. Looks like I might have to return it....
    Thanks for any help.
    Theo

I'm so sorry. It's rare that one needs to send a Mac in for replacement but it can happen. The posts you see here in the AD forums are but 1% of the total Mac sold so please don't get the wrong impression. It's better to send it back now instead of trouble shooting and getting more upset. The Airport card may not have been installed correctly or it's defective. One way or another you'll have a new iMac soon.
*"I spent hours setting up the computer when it first arrived and now I'll have to do that all again. "*
It shouldn't take hours to setup an iMac. Did you check the System Profiler to see if it recognizes the Airport card?
If not and if you haven't already boxed the iMac up, click the Apple Menu then click: About This Mac then click the "More Info" button. That will launch the System Profiler for you. Under Network on the left, click Airport. See if any information shows up on the right.

  • Brand new iMac kills home network

I have a home wi-fi network with a BT Voyager 2100 router and several PCs and laptops. All works fine. So today - I power up my brand new iMac and the home network stops. IE and Firefox on the PCs give "unable to find xxxx" error messages. I have tried the iMac with both wireless and ethernet connections to my router - same result. Safari on the iMac simply does nothing, blank screen. To get my internet back I have to power off the iMac and then re-start the router several times. Eventually all is well again. How do I get my iMac to work with a BT Voyager 2100 router?

update to my post - an old iMac G4 works just fine. So I guess that basic connectivity between iMac technology and my router is OK... so why does a brand new iMac give problems ?

  • Imac loose airport network setting like password every time i boot...

    Hi everybody,
maybe someone can help me. I use a imacg5. I connect via airport extreme to an avm router. I use WPA. Every time i boot my imac, there is no connection to the router. I have to go to internet connection, choose a "other" network, type in a new name for the network, switch to WPA and enter my password. After that everything is fine and works until i rebbot the machine. After that, the network is gone and i have to make one again. This only means, i have to do that under the airport icon at the top of os. Under preferences, network there is still the connection with correct password, but the imac will not use it. Also there is no possibility to save my password. My qestion is: how is it possible to save my network, encryption and password. Liek i told, under preferences everything is fine, the connection stays there after reboot. Only the internet connection will lost all settings. Maybe anyone can help, i´am a new mac user too, owning my imac only for 3 months (cannot believe, i worked so much years with a pc)...
    Thanks a lot

this was a user problem, my adminstrator account was gone

  • What's wrong with the New  iMac's AirPort?

    Hello
Last night I spent 4 hours trying to connect with my brand new wireless router (Netgear DG834PN). The one time I did connect and tried to configure using Netgear's Wizard (using Safari) my Mac's AirPort Extreme dropped the connection, never to return. The next 3hrs 55mins were spent trying to to get the two devices to connect. Unsuccessfully. Very frustrating!
I even tried connecting the two devices via ethernet, and still no joy. What should I do? Is my new Mac's Built-in AirPort Extreme faulty? Is my new wireless router faulty? Any other testing suggestions welcome.
I've have read, on this forum, about possible problems with the new aluminium iMac's AirPort. Is this a known fact or just a batch issue?
*Many Thanks* (Apologies if I haven't explained myself very well, first post)
    Mike

    *Hi it's me again*
Still no joy trying to connect to my router wirelessly via AirPort.
*+(Xiaofan & Benderissimo)+* - I can't even get as far as logging into the router via a browser. AirPort literally can't see anything even thought it's switched on. This means I have no chance to change the channel or anything else. I'm stuck.
Could AirPort be locked out or something?
On the plus side I have connected to the internet via ethernet. It was no problem at all. I basically connected a length on Cat. 5 cable from port 1 at the back of the router and into my Mac, and *hey presto!* (broadband at full speed). Happy.
The thing is I eventually want to move my iMac upstairs, this is when I need AirPort wireless to start working. I don't want to trail 100ft of Cat. 5 cable all round the house.
What else can I try to make my built-in AirPort Extreme work?
    _*I'm Flummoxed, Apple help me.*_

  • Ichat video not working when screen sharing into iMac in target display

I have my MBP (current model) plugged into my 27" iMac and using it as an external monitor. If I screen share into the running iMac from my MBP, several things aren't working properly. When I try to use iChat video, iChat crashes. Full size images don't show up in iPhoto or Preview. Both of these things do work on the iMac when it is not acting as my display when screen sharing into it. Is there a fix for this? As I would still like to be able to use some functions on my iMac through screen sharing when it is being used as my display for the MBP.

You are on your MBP. You have the iMac in Target Display Mode. You are using the iMac's display with the MBP with TDM. At the same time you are using Screen Sharing on the MBP to access your iMac.
Screen Sharing is never a full size view, it is always a window on the Mac's display with a smaller than full size resolution.
The 27" iMac's iSight is not available to use when the iMac is in Target Display Mode. Neither are its USB or FireWire ports.

  • I'm Unable to 'double click' when screen sharing from iMac to MBP

I want to use my new iMac to display the Macbooks screen but the double click doesn't seem to work ( most of the time ) !
I set up realVNC client on the iMac as well and the same problem happens, I can connect OK to windows hosts and can double click OK. This is a really odd problem it must be related to the VNC server built into OSX, is there a better/less buggy one that's free to use and easy enough to install ? I've never actually tried VNC to my MBP before.. I've recently started using the Remote desktop client from m$ too which seems OK
I've also managed to get Virtual box to reproducible hang my entire system, I thought thte iMac had overheated and shut down at first, the top gets pretty warm.
I am in love with this thing, 4 cores are definitively better than 2 !
    Simon

I believe I may have fixed this. My wireless router kept on needing resets so I changed its 'channel' to Auto from hard set to 10 ( default setting infact ;0) )..
Since I did that, the Doubleclick on VNC to MBP is working now and no more WIFI router reboots since. I Don't know if this is related to the new iMac on the net seems like a weird coincidence though if not. I can't really think of the reason for this BTW..

  • Screen Sharing my iMac Running Snow Leopard

So I've enabled Remote Management on the iMac running Snow Leopard. I prefer this tab to the screen sharing tab because I like to have the remote management status tab active on the top menu bar.
A screen sharing session now disables the screen saver and display sleep on the iMac. Is there any way to reenable screen saver and display sleep when a screen sharing session is active?
My next question is: what is the minimum configuration in the remote management tab required for screen sharing?
    Thanks,
