Screen Sharing No Longer Responds from Master Machine

For a long time, I have used screen sharing from my iMac to control my Mac Mini on the TV. Now, I can connect to screen sharing but the Mac Mini no longer responds to any commands from the iMac.
Another factor that may have contributed to this:
I use Hippo Remote to control the Mac Mini as my home theatre PC. This also has worked fine for a long time. Now, however, it can hardly get a connection anymore and when it does, I have no control over the Mac Mini any more. I've emailed their tech support but with little result.
The only other thing I know of is that I'm running two video server clients on my iMac to provide remote access to video files via my iPhone or iPad. I don't think those should interfere with the Mac Mini though.
Has anyone else run into this? Know of any solutions?
I've tried reboots, turning off the Hippo Remote VNC server on the Mac Mini, and other servers but nothing is getting me what I used to have.

Apple Tech guys and girls do not post in these User-to-User forums.
On a Specific day there was a problem with the SNATMAP server and everyone had issues with iChat Video and Audio chats.
The Original Poster did not seem to make it to the other threads at the same time.
I informed him that there had been a issue and that it seemed sorted for most people and asked if he still had an issue.
On the basis he said he was working - the problem and cause of that problem have been dealt with.
At which point do you not get that, in this thread, the issue discussed is sorted for the original poster and that you should move on ?
I will be quite happy to discuss your issues in your thread.

What I am saying that in this context the solution will not suit your situation.
An External event (SNATMAP Down) to all parties caused the problem he had and a second External event (SNATMAP up) solved it.
AS SNATMAP has not fallen over recently you have another problem and it is not related to this one.
I hope this is clear enough for you.

  • How to boot only one group in remote machine from master machine

    Hi,
I want to know the command to boot entire remote machine from master machine and how to boot only one group for remote machine from master machine.
    Thanks
    Amit

You can boot the entire remote machine (after booting the Master machine) as follows:
    tmboot -B <lmid of remote machine> -l <lmid of remote machine>.
For all the available tmboot options see http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18050_01/tuxedo/docs11gr1/rfcm/rfcmd.html#wp1032112

  • Back to my mac screen sharing no longer works since Mountain Lion release, even on Lion

I've used screen sharing via iCloud and back to my mac between a 2007 macbook and a 2010 imac.  Both computers are still on Lion but screen sharing stopped working when Mountain Lion was released.  I've read a number of comments on this forum that people were having trouble since upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I don't think that's the problem b/c I haven't upgraded either machine.  I think the problem is something Apple did in preparation for the Mountain Lion release date and it seems to have damaged screen sharing functionality.  Anybody else experiencing this or have a fix for it.
As for the specifics, I can still see my "other" machine under shared and can click "share screen," it usually searches for a couple minutes, then pops up the password dialogue box, but then searches for a while and eventually the password box closes, "screen sharing" stays open, but there are no windows associated with it.

I have the same problem, just today (although I'm still running 10.6.8). Every morning I turn on my main Logic mac then fire up my 2 slave macs, connect to them, activate Screen Sharing, and get going.
This morning I tried it, connected to the other macs as usual (I can see/access/alter their hard drives from my main mac) but when I click "Share Screen" I just get the "connecting" dialog box & it just keeps going.
The weird thing is, when I put my laptop into the network via wifi, I can screenshare my main mac's screen (all 3 of them, actually!)  but not my 2 slave macs that are ethernet'd to the main mac.
I've tried every solution I could find via google, and nothing is working.

  • Screen Sharing no longer working

Hello, everyone.  I have developed an issue with screen sharing on my MacBook Pro running OX 10.6.8, and I cannot seem to resolve it.  Perhaps I am missing something.  I realize this is a long post, but I am trying to be as complete as possible with my description of the problem and the steps I have taken to try to resolve it.
Screen sharing is of particular importance to me because I use it to control a Mac Mini that has my entire iTunes library. The Mac Mini is running OS 10.6.8.
Ordinarily, I would open Finder, click on the Mac Mini under "Devices," then "Share Screen" in the upper right corner of the Finder window. I enter my name and password in the login box, and I am controlling my Mac Mini within seconds.
Within the last few days, however, I have been unable to complete the connection. The first sign that something was wrong was when it took almost five minutes just for the login window to appear.  Then, after I entered my login information, the "Connecting..." gear began spinning. It never gets any farther than that.  I have even tried waiting as long as 45 minutes for the connection to complete before giving up, which requires restarting my computer, since force-quitting Screen Sharing doesn't work.
First, I tried re-booting my Mac Mini a few times, with no success.  I also tried re-booting my MacBook Pro both in normal and safe mode, followed by repairing permissions and checking the volume structure (Disk Utility found no errors). I even tried running the full suite of Onyx scripts.
To isolate the issue, I took two other computers in my house, one running OS 10.7.4 and the other running OS 10.8, and they connected perfectly. All computers are on the same wireless network (although the Mac Mini connects to the same network through ethernet).  Therefore, the issue has to be with my MacBook Pro.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to resolve this issue?  Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I too was running a Mac Mini with Server 10.6.8. Using it as a Netboot server was working just fine, but I wanted to look up the version of something on the mini. Connecting over screen sharing hung all day yesterday, so today I hooked up a keyboard, mouse, and display to look up the information from the mini. Turning off and restarting the shared services, restarting the mini, deleting keychains, attempting to get a screen share from a Finder connection... all hung at the "Connecting..." dialogue. I found this thread and signed out of MobileMe on the mini, and on the iMac I was using to connect. The connection went through at last, and now it's re-establishing without a hitch.

  • IChat - audio, video and screen sharing no longer work

I use ichat video and screen share to visit with family and assist with computer work. Every since .mac changed to .me, I am no longer able to do anything but text message...... I have changed ports, changed from .mac to .me logins. But still not luck. Nothing has changed with routers. Working with cable modems and DSL..... Looking for help.

    Hi Bob,
The Screen Sharing through iChat and the Audio only and Video chats do not require the AIM servers other than to say your Buddy is On-line.
There is feedback from the AIM servers to say what capabilities your Buddies have.
You can see these if you look at their Info card (Click on a Buddy and use Apple key and i together)
Now if the Buddy does not show the capability then it may well be the AIM server.
But..... IF you have turned off (or it has become turned Off) either of the Camera Enabled or Microphone Enabled items in the Video menu (from menu bar) then you will not have the capability and will therefore not see other people.
One clue will be in the Buddies Menu about whether you can do One Way Video or Audio chats. If it says you can it is the AIM end.

  • Screen Sharing 10.4.11 From 10.6.2

I have been trying to share a 10.4.11 screen from a Snow leopard machine and have not been able to get it to work. Is it possible? If so is there DETAILED instruction of how do do it anywhere?
When looking at the other machine in Finder I see the sharing button but it won't connect for sharing (but can for file transfer)
My situation... I just got a 27" iMac running 10.6.2, but I still need to run some Classic Apps. I previously used a PowerMac G5 Running 10.4.11 which I passed onto another family member that still let me used Classic (which is why I did not upgrade it to 10.5)
I tried to get SheepShaver up on Running on my new iMac but only have a 9.1 Disk.
I have an older 800 MHz with 10.4.11 which can run classic.
Originally I had hoped to connect that to the video of the 27" iMac... But there are no adaptors and i read if and when they do exist they will be very expensive (this I did not know before I bought the imac)
Anyway one solution (outside of another monitor - not an option financially or space wise now) would be for me to be able to do screen sharing and control the PowerMac from the imac. That would let me use my classic Apps. I was thinking of connecting the machines via firewire 400 which I THINK should give reasonable performance (my router is only 100 Mbit)
    Thanks
    - Karen

    Hi Karen,
It should work, I use a 24" iMac running 10.6.2 to contril an eMac/10.4.5 and 2 PCs running XP Pro.
On the 10.4 Mac>System Preferences>Sharing, enable Remote Login, Apple Remote Desktop, and Remote Apple events.
Then on the new 27"er, Finder>Go menu>Connect to Server, then type in vnc://ip.of.the.otherMac
Sign in with the Username & Password of that other Mac.

  • Home Sharing removing files copied from another machine

I have two machines both backuped with Time Machine... I purchase movies, music and TV shows on machine A with HS configured (in family area). I have machine B (in office) configured to use HS and to copy new files from Machine A to Machine B. Both machines have HS configured with the same account. This seems to work fine, except... If I then delete media files from Machine A via iTunes that asks, and I confirm, to remove the files from the disk. Will the files also be deleted from Machine B automatically. This is the behaviour I think I'm seeing and it is unexpected. I would expect the files on Machine B to remain until specifically removed!
There are several weeks between the time I purchase media and my purging. I also verify the files have been copied to Machine B before purging from Machine A. Machine A has a smaller HDD so I periodically remove files from this machine to free up space. Then after some time I notice that the files purged from Machine A are no longer on Machine B.
Is this really the way HS is designed to work????
    Thanks for any help.

Simon, There are 5 ways to share music with iTunes:  (1) iTunes Music Sharing (a/k/a "regular" sharing),  (2) Home Sharing, (3) Family Sharing, (4) multiple libraries using a shared set of files, and (5) each member have a copy of the content.
If you don't want them logging in with your Apple ID, Home Sharing is out.  If you are only talking about non-DRM music, #5 may be the best solution.

  • Screen sharing no longer works.

I cannot use screen sharing between my laptop and mini, although I used to be able to do so, after I "updated" to Lion. However, I can use file sharing, showing that wireless (airport) connection is working. This seems to be an Apple network problem.  I tried the solutions posted (signing out of MobileMe, restarting my laptop), but Screen Sharing comes up, the "Connecting" window shows and then goes away, while the network/(my laptop name) window stays on. Laptop also shows up in the sidebar. Trying for Screen Sharing help gets me a message: "Topic currently unavailable." Is there a solution that does not involve connecting the two computers with an Ethernet cable?

Is Firewall turned off on both machines?

  • Screen Sharing issue with VNC from Mac to PC - Black Screen

I have a Mac mini at my place of work. From it, using the built-in VNC capabilities in Leopard, I am able to successfully VNC to any Windows-based PC. I have a Mac Pro at home that tomorrow I am taking to my office. From my home I VPN into my office and want to VNC to my computers from the Mac Pro sitting at home. VPN connects just fine and when I attempt to VNC, I get a response from the computer at work and am prompted for the password and then I get connected. The problem is that the VNC screen is black. I can see that I am connected to the right computer because it's name is at the top, but there is basically no display. Tomorrow the Mac Pro will leave my home to be placed in my office. However, I am going to get an iMac for my home and need this functionality. I anticipate that I will have a similar problem with the iMac and would like to get it fixed now. Any thoughts on why I am seeing this? BTW...VNC works fine using Chicken of the VNC on my old iMac G3 running Panther over the VPN.
    Thanx...Jon

I have the exact same problem! I can connect using RealVNC viewer, but, on Leopard's in-built Screen Sharing app, I can authenticate, and see the computer name on top, but, there is simply no display! I have opened all ports on my router, and completely doing away with the Leopard firewall also doesn't seem to help!
    Any leads yet?

  • Screen Sharing no longer works for me with Lion

I use screen sharing all the time, I have several Macs.  Ever since I loaded Lion (on all systems) it opens screen sharing, asks for my username and password and loads the screen; I see the screen(s) for about a second then it prompts me again with my login to gain access.  It repeats this over and over with my login.
Anybody know what can be done to correct this issue?

This is an issue I have encountered too. Mac to Mac on Lion its sporadic at best - even when you do get in, you will get a strange jerky beachball on the host computer whilst everything appears to be working fine.
Windows to Lion its seriously borked, and you can't even click on an account to log in. Its something to do with ZRLE encoding of the session, and the fact its the first multi session VNC attempt. It rejects the connection unless its 101% happy with it.
Mountain Lion makes this a bit easier...I think they glossed over this in Lion and released a new one instead.
So whilst its not a solution, more of a workaround - your best bet is to upgrade to ML. By all means try making a freshh account on the host computer that matches the client compuer, and see if that authenticates properly. It should do.
Cheaper option: turn screen sharing off, use Vine as your VNC server instead (http://www.testplant.com/products/vine/). You can even do multi session if you want to tinker with some settings and read the forums.
Please mark as solved if this helped you. Thanks!

  • Screen went black during migration from time machine backup

Just did a clean install of Mavericks on my wife's 3-year old MacBook Air. I erased the hard disk first from the Recovery drive. Then did the Maverics install.  All went well.  Then I started a Time Machine migration from a back up I had on a Toshiba HD.  Everything started well showing about a 2 hour back up time, but about 1 hour into the migration, the MacBook screen went black.  I couldn't get it to go on, so I did a hard reboot of the system.  I've had to start the migration again, but not I'm concerned the same thing will happen.
Any ideas what is going on?

You can also go to System Preferences/Energy Saver and set Display sleep to never until you are done, then reset it.

  • Time Machine & Screen Sharing

I have a headless PowerPC Mini which I use as a media server.
I decided to add an external disk so that I could do Time Machine backups and, according to the Pref Pane all is proceeding and backups are being taken as expected.
Because it's a headless system, however, the only way for me to see Time Machine in action is to use Screen Sharing. When I run Time Machine, the front window moves down and centre as expected but the background, arrows, and bar at the bottom of the window do not appear.
I suspect this is a limitation of the antiquated hardware and Core Animation, but can anyone confirm this and possibly offer any suggestions how I might be able to use Time Machine in this situation? (Could I, for example, take my Time Machine disk to another mac and use it to restore in the event of a catastrophe?)

    Hi Bernard.
I have had exactly the same problem. But in my case I am using an up to date Mac mini (core 2 intel) to control a second such mini via screen saving. So it isn't the hardware. The two boxes are on a wired LAN so the network bandwidth is pretty good as well.
So, I expect it is the limitations of the protocol (VNC?) which underlies screen sharing that are causing this. Have you noticed that you cannot look at stuff on your media server in "Cover Flow" mode via screen sharing either? You get a message saying it isn't visible.
    <Edited by Moderator>
I reckoned that if I needed to recover some stuff from the time machine drive I could either just manually copy it back using the finder - the individual files are all there, uncompressed and readable on the TM hard drive - or if I really needed to run TM in recover mode I would need to plug a screen keyboard and mouse into the media server unit temporarily. After all, if the hard drive died you need to fish the thing out of its cupboard to get it mended anyway...

  • Screen Sharing between Snow Leopard and Leopard not working

I have Leopard on my old G5 Tower and just put Snow on my Intel Mini now Screen Sharing no longer works, file sharing works my network drives chatter back and forth with no problems I just can't get a Screen Share connection. On the G5 I put in the mini's location the "communicating" barber pole churns away for about 2mins then comes back with "Connection failed. Please make sure that Screen Sharing is enabled on the computer..... Also make sure your network connection is working properly. On the Mini Screen Sharing either crashes on launch or when it does launch does the same thing as the G5. Screen Sharing is on on both machines. I was using it just mins. before installing Snow on the Mini. I did install the remote desktop update from Apple on the Mini, it seems to be for Snow only as the update isn't mentioned on Software Update on the Leopard G5. So I'm thinking of going back to Leopard on the Mini, can I do it by just doing a "restore" from Time Machine or should I dig out the old install disk?
Am I the only one out there with this problem?
Netgear router on wired Gigabit Ethernet Network, several Firewire drives, and Network Storage drives.

The G5 is running 10.5.8 with all the updates. Screen sharing on the Mini 9 times out of 10 crashes on launch when it does load the computer list shows but none on it can be selected and connected to as before. When I put the G5's name in and try to connect I get the same cannot connect make sure sharing is on message I get on the G5 trying to connect to the Mini. I have tried making new network settings and rebooting that didn't work. File sharing works works fine all network drives show up. This and Front Row being now slow jerky and audio being out of sync (I've seen this complaint else where on this forum) are the only problems I've found. But these two are just enough to send me back to Leopard on the Mini. It is my media server. I don't use iChat but I did check to see if Screen Sharing is on after it finally opened, crashed over and over, I see that it was enabled there as well. My network is wired not airport, I only use wifi for my iPod Touch.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.1 broke my screen sharing

I have 4 Macs in our home with screen sharing enabled. I've used that function ever since it became available and it has worked flawlessly. All screen shared machines would show in a list in finder window.
I updated my main unit - a Mac Pro - to 10.6.1 when it was released. The others remained on 10.6.0 until this morning and now I see that Screen Sharing no longer works. No devices in the list - no connection resulting in a black screen.
    Nothing.
    Anybody with help?

UPDATE: First I should have confirmed that I had done all the standard hoop jumping that Apple CS would send a body through - make sure it's plugged in, turned it on, log out, log in, repair perms, disabled all the fonts and desk accessories in the Font/DA Mover, turn off Talking Moose...all that stuff. Nothing changed.
I just restarted my router and all appears to be back.
    hehe...Kitty Fetus....
BTW: I only updated to 6.1 because I got an email that said if I did I would be entered in contest for a $10M prize from the Steve Jobs Foundation.
