Screen Sharing no longer works for me with Lion

I use screen sharing all the time, I have several Macs.  Ever since I loaded Lion (on all systems) it opens screen sharing, asks for my username and password and loads the screen; I see the screen(s) for about a second then it prompts me again with my login to gain access.  It repeats this over and over with my login.
Anybody know what can be done to correct this issue?

This is an issue I have encountered too. Mac to Mac on Lion its sporadic at best - even when you do get in, you will get a strange jerky beachball on the host computer whilst everything appears to be working fine.
Windows to Lion its seriously borked, and you can't even click on an account to log in. Its something to do with ZRLE encoding of the session, and the fact its the first multi session VNC attempt. It rejects the connection unless its 101% happy with it.
Mountain Lion makes this a bit easier...I think they glossed over this in Lion and released a new one instead.
So whilst its not a solution, more of a workaround - your best bet is to upgrade to ML. By all means try making a freshh account on the host computer that matches the client compuer, and see if that authenticates properly. It should do.
Cheaper option: turn screen sharing off, use Vine as your VNC server instead (http://www.testplant.com/products/vine/). You can even do multi session if you want to tinker with some settings and read the forums.
Please mark as solved if this helped you. Thanks!

  • Screen Sharing no longer working

Hello, everyone.  I have developed an issue with screen sharing on my MacBook Pro running OX 10.6.8, and I cannot seem to resolve it.  Perhaps I am missing something.  I realize this is a long post, but I am trying to be as complete as possible with my description of the problem and the steps I have taken to try to resolve it.
Screen sharing is of particular importance to me because I use it to control a Mac Mini that has my entire iTunes library. The Mac Mini is running OS 10.6.8.
Ordinarily, I would open Finder, click on the Mac Mini under "Devices," then "Share Screen" in the upper right corner of the Finder window. I enter my name and password in the login box, and I am controlling my Mac Mini within seconds.
Within the last few days, however, I have been unable to complete the connection. The first sign that something was wrong was when it took almost five minutes just for the login window to appear.  Then, after I entered my login information, the "Connecting..." gear began spinning. It never gets any farther than that.  I have even tried waiting as long as 45 minutes for the connection to complete before giving up, which requires restarting my computer, since force-quitting Screen Sharing doesn't work.
First, I tried re-booting my Mac Mini a few times, with no success.  I also tried re-booting my MacBook Pro both in normal and safe mode, followed by repairing permissions and checking the volume structure (Disk Utility found no errors). I even tried running the full suite of Onyx scripts.
To isolate the issue, I took two other computers in my house, one running OS 10.7.4 and the other running OS 10.8, and they connected perfectly. All computers are on the same wireless network (although the Mac Mini connects to the same network through ethernet).  Therefore, the issue has to be with my MacBook Pro.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to resolve this issue?  Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I too was running a Mac Mini with Server 10.6.8. Using it as a Netboot server was working just fine, but I wanted to look up the version of something on the mini. Connecting over screen sharing hung all day yesterday, so today I hooked up a keyboard, mouse, and display to look up the information from the mini. Turning off and restarting the shared services, restarting the mini, deleting keychains, attempting to get a screen share from a Finder connection... all hung at the "Connecting..." dialogue. I found this thread and signed out of MobileMe on the mini, and on the iMac I was using to connect. The connection went through at last, and now it's re-establishing without a hitch.

  • IChat - audio, video and screen sharing no longer work

I use ichat video and screen share to visit with family and assist with computer work. Every since .mac changed to .me, I am no longer able to do anything but text message...... I have changed ports, changed from .mac to .me logins. But still not luck. Nothing has changed with routers. Working with cable modems and DSL..... Looking for help.

    Hi Bob,
The Screen Sharing through iChat and the Audio only and Video chats do not require the AIM servers other than to say your Buddy is On-line.
There is feedback from the AIM servers to say what capabilities your Buddies have.
You can see these if you look at their Info card (Click on a Buddy and use Apple key and i together)
Now if the Buddy does not show the capability then it may well be the AIM server.
But..... IF you have turned off (or it has become turned Off) either of the Camera Enabled or Microphone Enabled items in the Video menu (from menu bar) then you will not have the capability and will therefore not see other people.
One clue will be in the Buddies Menu about whether you can do One Way Video or Audio chats. If it says you can it is the AIM end.

  • Back to my mac screen sharing no longer works since Mountain Lion release, even on Lion

I've used screen sharing via iCloud and back to my mac between a 2007 macbook and a 2010 imac.  Both computers are still on Lion but screen sharing stopped working when Mountain Lion was released.  I've read a number of comments on this forum that people were having trouble since upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I don't think that's the problem b/c I haven't upgraded either machine.  I think the problem is something Apple did in preparation for the Mountain Lion release date and it seems to have damaged screen sharing functionality.  Anybody else experiencing this or have a fix for it.
As for the specifics, I can still see my "other" machine under shared and can click "share screen," it usually searches for a couple minutes, then pops up the password dialogue box, but then searches for a while and eventually the password box closes, "screen sharing" stays open, but there are no windows associated with it.

I have the same problem, just today (although I'm still running 10.6.8). Every morning I turn on my main Logic mac then fire up my 2 slave macs, connect to them, activate Screen Sharing, and get going.
This morning I tried it, connected to the other macs as usual (I can see/access/alter their hard drives from my main mac) but when I click "Share Screen" I just get the "connecting" dialog box & it just keeps going.
The weird thing is, when I put my laptop into the network via wifi, I can screenshare my main mac's screen (all 3 of them, actually!)  but not my 2 slave macs that are ethernet'd to the main mac.
I've tried every solution I could find via google, and nothing is working.

  • Screen sharing no longer works.

I cannot use screen sharing between my laptop and mini, although I used to be able to do so, after I "updated" to Lion. However, I can use file sharing, showing that wireless (airport) connection is working. This seems to be an Apple network problem.  I tried the solutions posted (signing out of MobileMe, restarting my laptop), but Screen Sharing comes up, the "Connecting" window shows and then goes away, while the network/(my laptop name) window stays on. Laptop also shows up in the sidebar. Trying for Screen Sharing help gets me a message: "Topic currently unavailable." Is there a solution that does not involve connecting the two computers with an Ethernet cable?

Is Firewall turned off on both machines?

  • Screen sharing clipboard transfers working for anyone?

    greetings,
    i use screen sharing on a number of macs, which i find enormously helpful... 2 MBPros w/ 10.5.6, 1 G5 w/ 10.5.5, 1 Powerbook w/ 10.4.11...
i've never gotten the clipboard transfers to work on any of these macs with any combination... does it work for anyone else? is there some kind of option to enable it?
    thanks-

I was having trouble with this until I had an "Ahh!" moment... I expected that when you select 'Send Clipboard' or 'Get Clipboard' that Screen Sharing would paste the other computer's clipboard contents. It never seemed to 'appear' where my cursor was. Once I realized that I needed to actually 'paste' the clipboard after the transfer, it works like a charm (although it still feels like an extra step to me).
    Just a thought.

  • Character palette no longer works for me with Leopard

I need to use the Character Palette frequently in my work, but since going to 10.5 it is not working. Only the bottom part appears, starting with the "View" drop-down menu, and under that the large character on the left and the "Related" scroll box next to it. Therefore, I can't select any other characters from the categories that should be at the top of the CP (or were in 10.4), and I'm stuck with whatever happens to appear in the large character box. How can I get the whole CP back?

For some unknown reason the international data caches can get corrupted and prevent character palette and keyboard viewer to appear in the input tab of the international preference pane. This also prevent from working the special characters item in the edit menu of many applications, including the Finder, Safari and Text Edit.
If this happened to you, go to System/Library/Caches folder and trash the following files (don't worry, they will be re-created when you restart your Mac):
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.kbdx
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.sbdl
    com.apple.IntlDataCache.le.tecx
As you are attempting to cancel files from System folder, you will be asked for an administrator ID and password.
If you don't have an administrator ID and password, ask the system manager in your office.
After you insert an administrator ID and password, the files will be trashed.
    Restart your Mac.
Open System Prefererences (in the apple menu, or inside the main Applications folder), open the International pane, and click the input menu. You will find again the character palette and keyboard viewer items with their chechboxes.
Click the two checkboxes. Be sure to click also at the bottom of the pane the checkbox labeled show the keyboard menu in the menu bar.
    Exit System Preferences.
In the right side of the menu bar you will find a menulet with your nation's flag. Click the flag and you will find both character palette and keyboard viewer.
Also, the special characters item in the edit menu of the applications that have this item will work as expected, and will open the characters palette.

  • OS X Screen Sharing doesn't work after Mavericks Upgrade

I have upgraded my 3x machines to Mavericks and Screen Sharing no longer works.  I have tried this with and without firewalls on.  File Sharing works but Screen Sharing will say connecting for a LONG time and then say that it's not enabled and to go turn it on...

    - MacMini - late 2009
    - MacMini - mid 2011
    - MBA - mid 2012
I have seen a couple people talk about this as well, but wasn't the same thing..

I believe this is the easiest way to resolve any screensharing issues in MacOSX: Solution: Reset the computer list in Screen Sharing. To acomplish that install OnyX. By the way a great tool for your Mac maintenance.
    Go to Cleaning>Misc. and
check My Computers list in Screen Sharing.
Press Execute and wait until it finish.
    Restart your computer.
    I hope this helps.

  • Screen Sharing Doesn't Work

    Hi!
I am having problems getting screen sharing to work. When starting a session I get an error message saying iChat is unable to start screen sharing.
Using the same computer with the same settings I can connect to some systems, but most systems won't allow me to connect.
In all cases, Enable Screen Sharing is checked. All systems are running iChat 4.x. All systems are running the same operating system. All systems are connected via hard-wire Ethernet.
What do I need to do to get iChat screen sharing to work? Connection Doctor does not show any results until AFTER a session has started.
We are able to connect via messaging with no problems.
    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
The Connection Doctor gives a shortened form of the Error message.
The Pop up (Send to Apple) has a Reveal Triangle next to the word Details.
In here will be a Longer Log with the Error code number at the end of the first main paragraph.
The Main issue with Screen Sharing is that it uses a Random port.
iChat uses 20 ports at iChat 4 and 5
    Port 5190
On TCP (to Login to AIM) and to Plain IMs and ON UDP to send Direct IMs including File Sending and Pics in Chats.
Some modems and routers cannot handle this dual use and we suggest changing the Login port to 443 (it helps with some Logging in issues and some Video chats)
Ports 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP for Jabber and GoogleTalk Buddy Lists.
Ports 5297, 5298, 5353 on UDP and 5298 on TCP for Bonjour Buddy Lists.
Ports 5678 On UDP for Sending/Receiving the Visible Invite to A/V chats
Ports 16393-16402 On UDP (Ten Ports)
(iChat 2 and 3 uses a wider range of ports (2) that can be read here which is where the Jabber and Bonjour ports are listed)
See this Article for iChat 4 up which only lists the changes to the A/V ports
You will notice that the later Article does not mention Screen Sharing.
This tends to mean you cannot "Set" the port in Port Forwarding due to it's random nature.
This may mean your Buddies do not have the port "open" for it.
Using UPnP which gives control to the App about which ports (and when) are opened.
There is also and Issue in Leopard with iChat 4.x with Internet Sharing (System Preferences > Sharing).
This can not be On. It effects all chats that involve A/V, which includes the Audio Chat with Screen Sharing.

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

  • Screen sharing doesn't work on headless mini

I have a headless Mac Mini that has been running 10.5 and 10.6 for years and I've never had any problems with screen sharing.
I now update to Lion and as soon as there's no screen attached I can no longer use Screen Sharing!
There is absolutely no way I can have a screen perminently attached to the machine.
Any ideas of how to fix this behaviour?
I've tried rebooting with no screen attached and that just hung the server at boot time.

    I've found a work around.
Connect the screen and then connect to the machine via Screen Sharing
Then change Screen Sharing from Hardware display to Virtual display.
Then you can disconnect the screen and Screen Sharing continues to work. (At least so far)

  • Command plus is no longer working for me correctly in Safari 8.0.2.

Command plus is no longer working for me correctly in Safari 8.0.2.  When I use it to zoom in a safari window, it makes fonts bigger instead of scaling the entire page bigger like it used to.  What changed or what did I accidentally change?   This  is only happening in Safari.  When I use Command Plus in a Chrome or firefox browser window, it works perfectly still.
To explain this a little better,  I have a 27" iMac.  When I open a browser widow in safari like yahoo.com,  The content fits in about a 10.5" section of the screen.  If i go to full screen or enlarge the window to fit the full screen the same 10.5" content is centered in my screen.  Previously, I could use Command Plus to zoom and the entire page would scale increasing from 10.5" to eventually filling the screen.  Now when I use command plus, the font's get bigger and bigger but the page width stays at 10.5"

    Hi petraidm,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  If I'm understanding you correctly, it appears you have updated Safari to the latest version, but are still using Mountain Lion as your operating system, is that correct?
You may need to adjust your screen resolution, or the zoom settings in the Accessibility pane of System preferences.   Usually, zooming changes the size of text or content in a window -- not the size of the window itself.   So I usually go to full screen mode in Safari, and then zoom in if I need to enlarge the text.
OS X Mountain Lion: Zoom content on the screen
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11488
If you have difficulty seeing or reading items on the screen, you can use Accessibility preferences to magnify items on the screen. You can zoom the entire screen or zoom the area that has keyboard focus in a separate window.
    Set up zoom
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, and then click Zoom.
    Do either of the following:
To zoom with keyboard shortcuts, select “Use keyboard shortcuts to zoom.”
To zoom with your mouse or trackpad, select “Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom.”
Choose where the magnified content appears with the Zoom Style pop-up menu.To display it in a window near the mouse cursor, choose Picture-in-picture. To display it on the entire screen, choose Fullscreen.
To set options for zoom or the zoom window, click More Options.More Options panel
You can also turn on zooming by pressing Command (⌘)-Option (⌥)-F5 and selecting options in the Zoom section.
    Zoom with keyboard shortcuts
To zoom in, press Command (⌘)-Option (⌥)-Equal Sign (=). To zoom out, press Command (⌘)-Option (⌥)-Minus Sign (-).
If you chose Picture-in-picture zooming, a window appears near the mouse cursor with the magnified image. If you chose the Fullscreen zooming, the entire screen displays the magnified image.
Zoom with a mouse or trackpad
To zoom in and out, hold down the modifier key you specified while you perform the scroll gesture.
For example, if you have a trackpad and used the default settings, zoom in by holding down the Control (^) key while you drag two fingers up on the trackpad. Zoom out by holding down the Control key while you drag two fingers down on the trackpad.
If you chose Picture-in-picture zooming, a window appears near the mouse cursor with the magnified image. If you chose Fullscreen zooming, the entire screen displays the magnified image.

  • File sharing no longer working under Lion

File Sharing no longer works on our household macs running Lion. Shared volumes show up intermittedly in the finder sidebar. But connections fail.

for what it's worth, i too am experiencing this issue and it is driving me insane... Any chance you two came across a workaround or fix?
i've discovered that clicking on "AirDrop" on the shared Mac seems to awaken the shared services (screen sharing, file sharing etc.) and make them available on networked devices.
i'm beginning to suspect that Bonjour may be the culprit as services advertised using Bonjour suddenly spring to life.
it's short-lived unfortunately as availability eventually ceases... Clicking again on AirDrop reliably brings it back...
That's where I am currently... if anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

  • Apple TV Home Sharing no longer working

I have a friend who is looking for help  Here is his problem:
"I've had the 2nd generation Apple TV since October when it was released and it has worked fine until I recently changed my Apple User Name (email address). After changing my user name my Apple TV and iPhone 4 no longer find my shared network and home sharing no longer works. Home sharing is enabled on all devices, including my Sony Vaio Laptop, iPhone4, and Apple TV 2nd generation. Everything else has remained constant, including service provider, router, modem, and internet security (Trend Micro). Also, my library is on a networked hard drive, which didn’t seem to make a difference before, but I figured I'd mention it."
The problem began when he changed his Apple User Name.  After he changed his name, home sharing no longer works even though he also changed it on all his devices to match the new Apple User Name.
How does he get Home Sharing working again. Has anyone run into this same problem?
    Thanks in advance

    Winston,
Thank you for the information.  He confirmed that the ID and password are the same on every device.  This only started happending when he changed his User Name with Apple.
--Itunes is running on a Windows Vista Machine (Sony Vaio)
--He has an Apple TV (2nd Gen)
    --He has an iPhone 4
Can you tell me more about the technologies that apple uses to make "homesharing" work?  Do you think he may need to remove then re-install Bonjour?

  • IChat 4.0.7 Screen Sharing does not work.

Me and my friend both have identical machines, the intel iMac 20" 2.66mhz
    Software is identical
iChat version is identical (4.0.7 (616))
Video Chat works perfectly, our internet connections are fantastic, no issues there.
Both using Netgear routers with uPnP enabled.
    Internet Sharing is OFF
Firewall is "set access for specific services and applications" and iChat and iChat Agent are added.
I conclude that Screen Sharing *does NOT work* as advertised.
Apple, I am most disappointed, get it sorted for next release please.
Who else has witnessed this epic failure?
    Thanks,
    edit
Also, what is this iChat AV nonsense? Where are the iChat 4 forums?

Thanks again Leo for your help,
Yes I was refering to the screen sharing in system preferences/sharing.
    Checked the video menu:
    Screen sharing enabled
    Camera enabled
    microphone enabled
so no that's not it! Was hoping it was something simple like that too.
Both netgear routers dont have any ports forwarded, just upnp enabled.
The frustrating thing is, both macs are new, one is only days old, and neither mac has had it's setting messed about with or anything.
It would be great to find the solution, 100's of people having similar issues if you google it.
    *edit*
Just a thought, would the type of account make a difference? At the moment we are both using the type of accounts that iChat creates when you select "get an iChat account" (creates a [email protected] login)
